LA Angels are MLB’s Biggest MESS, right now

Here’s Brody Brazil. You know, it is interesting with the Los Angeles Angels because they haven’t even played a baseball game now in weeks, but at this moment, they’re kind of feeling like the hottest mess in all of Major League Baseball. I take no pride, I take no enjoyment in saying that, but there just seem to be a lot of bad things surrounding this baseball franchise right now. You can see Show Otani peering through the title there. bad things on the field that have happened, off the field that have happened. It’s all kind of coming together and painting a huge picture of this organization. So, I’ll actually start this video with maybe the least pressing things and then I’ll get to the more serious side by the very end. You think about show Otani as a Dodger right now trying to win his second World Series already. Will people over time, like when Otani’s career is done, will they even remember that he played for the Angels and started his big league career, Major League Baseball with the Angels, six seasons, more than 700 games with the Halos in Orange County. But of all those years, he was on no teams with a winning record. He played in zero playoff games. Like this is Otani, who right now is on the biggest stage and might be the biggest star on the biggest stage. and we were being denied that for those six seasons in 700 plus games. He had Mike Trout as a running mate and those teams just could never get the job done. All of a sudden, he goes to the other team in Southern California in the Los Angeles area. He’s on the Dodgers. First year they win a World Series. And then he just had that historic two-way NLCS performance in game four over the Brewers. hit three home runs, struck out 10 as a pitcher to lead the Dodgers back to a second chance of winning a World Series. They might be the first team to win back-to-back World Series in 25 years. But oh yeah, this is the same show Otani who couldn’t even get in a playoff game on the Angels for six seasons in Orange County. And you know what? I didn’t even include maybe the most hurtful part of this, the most unfortunate part of all this for Angels fans. I didn’t even textually put that on the screen here. But Shi Otani was about to be a free agent during the end of his time with the Angels. They could have, like most teams do, traded him before the deadline and got a ton of players and considerations and a lot of things in return for Shi Otani as a playoff rental. They could have shipped him to a playoff contender right before the expiration of his contract, before the deadline. They didn’t do that two years ago. They got nothing by losing Shoi Otani. And again, now he’s here doing what he’s doing on the biggest stage. How is that supposed to make your organization and your fans feel in retrospect? It’s not that you were going to keep Otani forever, right? He made the jump to the other Los Angeles area team. And that’s what a free agent situation is all about. But the fact that you could have got something, probably a lot from trading Otani at the deadline of 2023. Instead, they didn’t. They got nothing. And now they get to witness what he’s doing in the very same market. It’s not like Otani’s on the other side of the continent. He’s not a Blue Jay, for example. At least he’d be miles away in a different country away. You don’t have to watch this up close. Angels fans have to watch this and say, “Remember when he was on our team?” Okay, let’s move on. Kurt Suzuki was already working for the Angels. He’s been hired as the team’s brand new manager. So, essentially, he was promoted from within. But even before Kurt Suzuki was being talked to, and this was being officially announced, Albert Pulse had been a favorite reportedly for the manager job with the Angels. And the athletic reported that the two sides between the pool holes camp and the angel side, they could not get close on working out a deal. It’s not that there wasn’t interest. It’s not that there wasn’t availability or the possibility. It’s just they could not negotiate whatever Albert wanted year-wise and moneywide wise and what the team was willing to do year-wise, term-wise, and moneywise. They could not get close. They could not agree. So in a sense already, and I and I do not mean this to disrespect Kurt Suzuki, but in a way it kind of feels like they had Albert maybe as the favorite. It just didn’t work out. So they pivoted. They went a different direction. Kurt Suzuki been around baseball for a while. Catchers always make good managers, but Kurt Suzuki is from is promoted from within and he’s given a one-year contract. This is a person with no managing experience. and Albert hadn’t had no managing experience either. So, we’re not saying that there’s a total different contrast of one person’s, you know, background and experience. Certainly, Albert did a lot more as a player than Kurt Suzuki did, but that’s just as a player, and they both had long careers, so we’ll kind of call all that a wash. I’m just saying here, the one-year contract, when does any brand new manager sign a one-year contract in Major League Baseball? Sometimes a one-year extension, like if you’ve already been the manager for a couple years, three years, they want to do a fourth. They want to just see how this is going. How does next year go? Fine. But he’s never done this before. He’s taking over a team that had a really rough last season. What is the expected outcome in a one-year contract? Like, how do you get this right if you’re Kurt Suzuki? And even again, how does it feel to know that there were some other considerations widely publicized before you and now you’re put in this ultimately weird situation? Let’s move on to the what? HVAC claims, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning claims. You say Kikuchi, the Angel starter, he exited his final 2025 start, I think after five innings, but a little bit early because of cramps. He had cramps. and he says it’s because all season long he’s been having to warm up before the start in the Angel’s wait room where there’s no air conditioning. Now obviously in September and getting close to October it gets a little bit hotter in Southern California. No air conditioning in the wait room no ventilation like no moving air, sweat and humidity and nothing to kind of blow that out and keep it cool and keep it dry. It seems kind of disgusting. First off, like any situation like that, I don’t know if it’s true or not, but this is Kikuchi’s claim. He says also all season long he requested to the team to have this repaired, like get it fixed. Please do this for us. That request was never fulfilled. Kevin Polar on foul territory was also commenting on prior years of angel experience and he said quote it’s a big selling point to get players like having a nice clubhouse and the Angels are very far behind from a lot of places I’ve seen they have an old stadium right and maybe they don’t have the newest clubhouse or locker room or facilities but no air conditioning in a wait room in Southern California seems like a rough thing going on so all of that right and people on the internet have dug this up. And I don’t know really how to put these two things together, but apparently there is this job opening for the Angels as a part-time event HVAC technician. I kid you not. Now, I think it also says this job was posted 3 months ago, but that also might be in line with the time that you say Kikuchi was complaining about this and saying, “Hey, could you fix the air conditioning?” And so, they didn’t have somebody to do the job. They still don’t. And look, this could be a corporate side, an HR side. Maybe these jobs were already all posted. Maybe there’s a bunch of jobs on there that don’t even exist. Like, we know this can be a kind of a flimsy and flaky situation, job listings, and what’s actually available. But the fact that this is out there in the public eye, and people are seeing this and putting it together with a pitcher’s claims, you’re like, how’s that even possible? Okay, I’ve said that this video was going to escalate and now we’re actually getting to something serious here. Tyler Skaggs is a former Angels pitcher who was found dead in his hotel room in June of 2019 while the Angels were on a road trip to take on the Texas Rangers. And he overdosed on drugs that were given to him by communications director of the Angels, Eric Kay, who had also been giving drugs admittedly to several other players over time. Kay already had his trial and was found guilty. And Eric Kay right now is serving 22 years in prison for his involvement surrounding the death of Tyler Skaggs. And Tyler Skaggs had already dealt with some addiction problems earlier in his life. You probably know the story. It’s terribly unfortunate. Um, and it it all happened during the middle of a season. And then, by the way, the first night that the Angels decided to tribute Tyler Skaggs and his passing later on in 2019, Mike Trout hit hit a homer in that game. They were all wearing Tyler Skaggs’ number on the back of their respective jerseys. Trout homers and the Angels pitching staff threw a collective no hitter that game. Yeah. So, some some magical things happened after the fact, but none of this changes the tragedy that did happen. So, Eric Kay already had that lawsuit go through. And right now here at the beginning of this off season, the Skaggs family is pursuing another lawsuit against the team and its ownership. And as part of this lawsuit, people like Mike Trout were the very first to testify what they witnessed and what they experienced between Eric Kay and Tyler Skaggs and the whole situation. And I guess what I’m saying is like this part, I’m not going to go too deep on this, but you understand of all the maybe humorous other things or like watching Otani do well or what’s up with a one-year contract or fix your air conditioning, like this is actually life and death. This is a serious part that that needs to be talked about. But it all kind of goes into the bigger picture right now of oh my goodness, the Angels franchise has such a bad aura surrounding it. There are so many bad things around the angels right now um that just kind of feel really hard to think any other way about like they’re they’re in rough shape all the way around. So kind of a hard ending to that video dealing with the Tyler Skag situation. I’ll be interested to see how it plays out and the family’s lawsuit against the team. How will that go? What’s the outcome of that? I don’t know if anything will actually make the situation better. Let me know what you think about all this in the comments section below. Angels superstar Mike Trout took the stand Tuesday in the wrongful death civil trial brought by the family of deceased former pitcher Tyler Skaggs — tearing up as he testified that he viewed Skaggs as a brother.

Trout acknowledged that he became aware before Skaggs’ death that then-Angels director of communications Eric Kay was using drugs, and offered to lend support for Kay to attend drug rehabilitation.

During the 2025 season, Los Angeles Angels pitcher Yusei Kikuchi publicly complained about the lack of air conditioning in the team’s weight room, leading to a public controversy. When general manager Perry Minasian publicly denied the existence of any problems, the Angels almost immediately posted a job listing for an HVAC technician.

Kurt Suzuki got just a one-year contract when he became the Angels’ sixth manager in the past eight seasons, general manager Perry Minasian said Wednesday. Minasian also has one year left on his deal with the Angels, who are mired in a stretch of 10 straight losing seasons after finishing 72-90 last month.

  2. After watching the Angels management style over the past 2 decades, why would any person want to be there manager other than getting a job? A few Angel fans I know wanted Arte to sell the team and were disappointed when he didn't.

  3. Based on a comment at the news conference, Suzuki was given a one year contract because it and the GMs contract will expire at the same time – not the best situation.

  4. They are, indeed,an embarrassment. They told other candidates that Albert was their preferred choice, and now giving this coach only a 1 year contract. Screams ineptitude.

  5. Giants fan living in Orange county here. On the periphery I kinda keep track of what’s going on with the Angels just cuz they’re the local team. Let me tell you this franchise is a total grease fire. Worst run franchise in sports. Arte Moreno does things up and down the organization in an attempt to pinch pennies . The only team in MLB that doesn’t have its tv and radio crew travel with the team. They call away games remotely. This is to save $. Just one example. There’s a ton like this.

  6. CBA needs to change for bottom dwellers/small market franchises. Being able to trade players for DRAFT PICKS! Angels could have gotten 2-3 1st rounders maybe some 2nd rounders, Paul Skenes for Pittsburgh let them trade him for the same kind of haul. What that does is, allows teams to rebuild quickly, cheaply for small market teams, no salary cap, give teams opportunities to draft college players that are more show ready more quickly. Angels Pittsburgh and others would be challenging big market teams for playoff spots. Your comments welcomed…

  7. I’m in Oregon and I’ve been an Angels fan since the late ‘80s. It hurts to be a fan of this team and at some points embarrassing to be a fan. Artie and upper management are fully to blame. This organization just baffles me.

  8. he got a 1 year deal because there's only 1 year left on Perry's deal think about it. If they don't bring back perry, don't you think a new gm would want to be part of the hiring process????
