🔴LIVE 🔴Detroit Tigers VS Seattle Mariners /October 05/ Mlb Division Series/MLB THE SHOW 25

[Applause] It’s the Detroit Tigers taking on the Seattle Mariners. It’s buzzing in here ahead of game three and we’ll be back in a minute to get it started. alongside Chris Singleton. I’m John Shambi. Postseason baseball singing. It’s always great to see and be a part of. Oh, Boo. You just never know what’s in store when it comes to postseason baseball. You do know you’re going to see some amazing pitching players coming out of the bullpin throwing a hundred, some incredible defensive plays, some big knocks, and maybe a mistake or two that’ll live on forever. All I do know is I’m pumped up for this one. Festivities wrapping up. The crowd is electric. And we’ll be back to get it going right after this. just about set to go now. And on the mound in this one, Bryce Miller. He has a great ability to command a game boo. But in order for that to happen today, he’s got to limit damage, make smart pitches, and avoid big innings. If he were a golfer, we’d say he needs to avoid any double bogeies out there. And if he does, his scorecard is going to look pretty good at the end of the day. All right, ready to go here. Here’s the veteran second baseman, Glabber Torres. Swaying and a miss. There’s the slider. And we’re underway in game three. [Applause] the pitch and there’s a foul ball out of the ground to third. Come on. Come on. handles, throws to first, and a quick out number one. Let’s take a look at our lineup. And it’s clear the most important job they have today is getting to the starting pitcher early and often. No doubt about that. That’s the best way to disrupt a game. But can they do it? Certainly something for us to pay attention to in this one, partner. So, digging in, Carrie Carpenter. swing and a pop off in foul ground. Suarez sizes this one up, pulls it down, and he makes the catch. And there’s two away. Hey man, four pitches, two outs. That is an excellent base. Two outs. Base is empty. Now it’s the right fielder Wel Perez. lifted in the air down the left side. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And that is that. No score as we head to the bottom of the first back at T-Mobile Park. And today’s starting pitcher, Jack Flareity. Chris, how about a scouting report? try to stay back for that power change up. Speed differential between the fast ball and the change up is huge. Hitters, they have a hard time staying back. We go to the bottom of the first. Here’s the left fielder, Randy Rosarena. Rosarena, swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Next offering misses down and away headed towards the corner and a foul ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. That one is absolutely belted. Paris going back, leaps at the wall, but can’t haul it in. And it’s gone. It deflected off of him and over for a home run. [Applause] Well, he almost robbed the home run right there. And I tell you what, he’d love another crack at it during batting practice. You always like to work on that. And so close, but that one was just out of his reach. And now the DH Cal Raleigh. This guy is one of the best athletes in the sport. And there’s a ball. Always exciting to see a laid-off home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. You know, Raleigh made history in 2023. He had a game with two home runs and six RBI’s, becoming the first catcher in Mariners history to do that. That one missed. Speaking of dingers, he’s the second fastest to 50 home runs in Seattle history. Only A-Rod needed fewer games. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. With the big bats coming up and a home run already surrendered, he’s really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters. This one smoked on its way out of here. They do it again. Back-to- back homers. It’s two nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Back-to-back homers. Always a special feeling at the ballpark, especially if it’s your team that does it and those guys get to slap hands at home plate. This is the kind of thing that can really fire up a ball club. [Applause] Au Suarez up to the plate now. That’s off the inside corner. Ball one. Sing. Maybe some nerves getting the best of him in the first. Well, it’s hard to know exactly if it’s nerves or not, but he just doesn’t have it right now. Those hitters on the other side, they’re going to say it’s nerves and use that as a competitive edge to try to jump on him even more. No question about this one. It’s out of here. Three in a row. Wow. And they boost their lead. It’s three nothing. He absolutely crushed that one. No doubt about that one, Boo. We knew it wasn’t coming back. Backto backto back home runs. And these guys look so dominant right now. Pitcher might want to check and see if he’s tipping his pitches or not. But I tell you what, if this was basketball, that opposing team would call a timeout to try to slow down this offense. [Applause] Mitch Garver up to hit here. Right through there for a strike. [Applause] Nobody out with three runs in already this frame here in game three of this American League Division Series. Next offering is fouled back. Next one is off the plate. Yeah, the count one and two. Well, that’s kind of what you expect in an O2 count. Excellent job of the hitter to have the plate disciplined to lay off of that pitch. And a swing and a miss. And that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Oh, I’m not sure what he was waiting on right there. He got the change up and still late on it. You rarely see that. It almost makes you think that he was trying to set the pitcher up. I mean, if you can’t catch up to the off speed stuff, there’s no way you’re going to touch a fast ball. Still only one out here in the inning and that is out of play. And ball one. And that’s downstairs and outside. [Applause] Next pitch is outside. Really good take, especially with two strikes. [Applause] Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. [Applause] Swinging a ground ball up the middle on the run. Throw to first. Nicely done for the Owl. And let’s take a look at the lineup. JP Crawford gets a chance to hit. Fast ball is outside. Two out. Space is empty. Next offering in there for a strike. And that is strike one. hammered on a line to the left. Base hit. So, a two out knock keeps the inning alive. Well, I’m not saying that play was easy, but it was harder than it needed to be thanks to the bad jump. Those small moments can be costly. Digging in is the switch inning outfielder Leo Reebas. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Leonardo. [Applause] Next offering is fouled back [Applause] in the dirt. Blocked. just off the inside edge. I think it’s very important to establish the inside part of the plate early. Sets the tone for the rest of the game. [Applause] That one misses. Ball three. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. Stays alive. Crawford leads off first with two down to the inning and a foul ball. He stays alive. [Music] [Applause] Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. Here’s a highf fly ball out to center. Meadows and that’ll do it. They explode with three solo homers in the inning. We’ll head to inning number two at T-Mobile Park. It’s the Mariners three and the Tigers nothing. Third game of the division series. And here’s the first baseman, Spencer Torqulson. Miller back to work. Splits the plate. It’s 0 and one. A three-0 lead is great, but you can’t get too comfortable. Got to stay aggressive, keep attacking hitters, try to cruise through this ball game. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. Our umpire behind the plate, Jerry Hillsdale. High praise for Jerry when we talk to people around the game. Yeah, no doubt about it, Boo. He’s very straightforward, very consistent back there. So most of the time you’re not even going to think about him. That’s a good thing. Let’s talk about great individual postseasons. One that really sticks out to me is Ricky Anderson in 1989. He hit .441 with three homers and 11 stolen bases, leading Oakland to a World Series championship. Here’s Riley Greenley inside. Just missed. Man, when I think about great postseason performances, hard to top Carlos Beltran in 2004. Eight homers and six steals in 12 games with the Houston Astros. He didn’t even get to play in the World Series that year. Hard hit right side over to first and a couple of quick outs. Batting six catcher Dylan Dingler. And up next for Detroit, Dylan Dingler, known for his rocket arm behind the plate. He is at the top of the game in terms of defense at the catching spot. And that one a little bit high. It’s so impressive because these guys have to do so much study and preparation for their pitchers, for opposing hitters, and really their number one job is to guide that staff through a ball game. And so when you also can turn it up offensively and be a force there, that is a win-win. Every manager’s dream. Two outs. That one fouled off. Two and two. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Down in order. Go the Tigers. They trail it here. 3 nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now the rookie second baseman, Cole Young. Number two. and first offering is fouled off. Singi wasn’t very sharp in the first. Got hit around a little bit. Just wasn’t able to locate particularly well. A lot of stuff for the fat part of the plate. Yeah, Boo. He wasn’t fooling anyone. It’s a tough place to be cuz it’s not always obvious what adjustments need to be made. Sometimes it’s location. Sometimes it’s being too predictable. Sometimes you’re tipping your pitches. He’s going to need to figure it out quickly, though. That’s towards center Meadows. Carous. One down. Batty ninth. First baseman. Miles. Next is the speedy first baseman. Miles Mastro. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively, but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. One down, base is empty. This one in the air right field. Perez on the move. Brings it in with a nice running grab. Two away now. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. Ball one there. What about him playing another position on defense? One that would require a little more range. Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game, it’d surprise a lot of people. He’s got it. And that’ll end the inning. Mariners go down quietly there, but they lead it three nothing. Back in Seattle, here’s the third base, Zack McKinstry. Hoo. He never moved because he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. The one. There’s the strike. One. [Applause] This one high in the air to left center. On the move to the alley, brings it in and there’s one down. Batting eight short. The batter now Javier Bayz. Sing. You talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. The shorts stop takes the ball and because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. One out, base is empty. Next offering in there for a strike. It’s two and two. That front door slider is such a devastating pitch. You don’t want to get beat by the inside fast ball. So you cheat a little bit and then by the time it gets there, it’s out of the swing plane. Outside corner got him looking. You know, splitters aren’t thrown by a ton of pitchers. And one of the main reasons is that they’re difficult to control and not many guys can spot them consistently where they want to. But he’s one of those exceptions. He’s found a way to corral a split and he can place it on a dime just like he did right there. Parker Meadows at the plate now. That’s ball one. Meadows goes 6 feet 5 in 205 pounds and he was a second round pick back in 2018. Hard hit left side. Crawford throws to first in time and that’ll do it. Tigers fail to make any noise. They trail in this one three nothing. And we’re back. Here’s some real power at the plate. Cal Raleigh. He’s not going to get cheated up there. No, he’s not. He’s looking to do damage with every swing he takes. And that’s downed away. Well, these Mariners doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game. And the numbers back that up. It’s tough to remember the times they’ve actually swung and missed at a pitch because and meanwhile this a fair ball down the left field line around first heading for two in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Two hits for him in this one both for extra bases. Got to feel good about that. That was a thing of beauty. He may have been a little behind the pitch but by getting that barrel into the hitting zone early on in his swing he was able to meet it and still shoot a line drive down the line and left. Auheno Suarez up to hit now. He’s already homerred here in this one. Swing and he breaks his back. Nice grab as he reached down to make the play. Now batting. Catcher Mitch Garver. Mitch Garver will hit next. He’s 0 for one. [Applause] swings through that one. 0 and one. In the dirt, one out and a runner at second here in game three of this American League Division Series. Right side and that chance handled. Throws to first and they get the out. Now batting center and stepping in for the Mariners, Luke grounded out his first time. There’s the strike. When you’re struggling out there on the mound, hitters know that there’ll be plenty of opportunities within the at bat to try to get something to hit hard. Two outs with a runner at third. [Applause] Comes up empty. That’s strike two. More and more guys are looking to slug regardless of the count in this situation. We’ll keep a close eye on his approach. Two outs. swing and a ground ball base hit right field. Runner in from third to extend their lead. It’s an RBI single and they lead by four. Comes through with the RBI. He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. And up next for Seattle, JP Crawford one for one with a single so far. Flareity a move to first and he’s back in safely. [Applause] And there’s the strike. [Applause] Off of first with two away. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes. There’s a ball. Throw to second. Save. That was close. But Stackcast shows us why he so often seems to be on the safe side of these steel attempts. Chris. Yeah, you see that plus speed and he needed every last bit of it to swipe that bag. Such a threat on the bases. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. Kelly just threw that fast ball by him, elevated. And if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity. Not close with that one. And that’s ball two. [Applause] Highfly ball down the left field line. Green makes the grab and that’s the third out. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now a four nothing ball game. This is the American League Division Series on the show. Back at T-Mobile Park as we go to the top of the fourth. Here’s Glaver Torres. There’s a swing and a drive. High bounce. takes it over the fence. That’s an automatic double. Well, there’s something really nice about getting yourself an automatic double like that. You get to stroll into second base without having to worry about a throw or getting your uniform dirty. And now you’re just looking for the next guy to kind of do the same thing. Maybe put one in the gap so you can jog home as well. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Next to the plate is the Tigers DH, Carrie Carpenter. Well, here’s a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit and hardly order coming up right behind them. This is where they need to get going [Applause] towards first. Master Bony and he takes it himself for the out. That’s a good piece of hitting right there. It’s early but you still want to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score. That’s exactly what happened. So you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that at bat. And next to hit for Detroit, Wel Perez fly to left his first time. [Applause] And that one clips the corner. [Applause] gets a piece and stays alive. One away with a runner at third. Top half of inning number four. [Applause] Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Well, that’s a blue zone right there or the cold zone on the hitting chart. Just doesn’t have much success in that part of the strike zone. And a really good job of the pitcher executing. Try to go there as often as you can. The numbers are in your favor. [Applause] Torqulson stands in here, takes ball one low. Two outs and one in scoring position. And that’s off the inside edge. Two and 0. [Applause] That’s a strike across the top of the zone. [Applause] up the middle now. The throw to first on the run. Wide throw pulls him off the bag and the inning still alive. That’s a play you expect your shorts stop to make pretty much every time. Pretty routine. Hard to tell if he didn’t get a great grip on it or the mechanics on him just broke down, but that gives this offense an extra out to work with. runner at first with two away. And now here is Riley Green. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. And it’s fouled away. [Applause] had a big swing and a miss. Hit on the ground to the right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. One run, one hit, one error and one left. We’re midway in the fourth. It’s the Mariners four and the Tigers won. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Chami and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Leo Rivas. swing and a miss. Strike one. Well, he hasn’t quite settled in out there. Four runs in three innings. He’s going to have to have some quick one, two, three innings to pitch deep into this ball game. Swings through that one for strike two. Tigers bullpen with some action. Kaider Montero getting loose for AJ Hinch. Seaw wall warming up as well. And that just misses his understanding the strike zone. Very impressive. That was a very close 02 fast. I just don’t know how you take that. That one way outside and the count is two and two and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Clearly trying to stay back a little bit longer for that change up as he fells that fast ball back. That’s down and in. [Applause] fouled off and they’ll do it again. That one misses. So, a leadoff walk. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty. Cole Young up next for the Mariners. fly to center his first time. [Applause] Liner and this could be trouble. Lead runner makes the turn at second. Coming home. He’ll score easily. Well, clearly he was ready to hit right there. Put a pretty good jolt into that one. Great swing, nice balance and weight transfer. And he got it to drop in out there in the deep part of the field. Here comes the skipper. And we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Jack Flareity departs. And this is one he’d like to forget. Back with a new arm after this. Now, Kaider Montero on a pitch out of the penny here. And we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. And one of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rates very high and it just breaks a ton. So up next, Miles Mastroy flyed to right his first time and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. [Applause] And now it’s even up. just missed. [Applause] Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield coming home. He will score and it’s an RBI single and the lead is up to five. So the batting order turns over now. It’s Randy Rosarena. He’s already homerred in this game. There’s the strike. [Applause] Nobody out with a pair of runs across in the frame. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth and a swing and a miss. [Applause] That missed by a lot. Going to count one and two. 02 pitch that far out of the zone gives the hitter a little confidence that maybe he can climb back into this at bat. [Applause] Liner snagged at first. Yikes. That ball was scorched in absolute missile. And it almost becomes self-defense as the fielder. When one of those things comes screaming towards you, watch your lips. Next is the designated hitter, Cal Raleigh. That one pushed foul out of play off to the left. [Applause] And that’s through there for a strike. And it’s nothing in two. Master Bone leads off first with one away. Over to first and he saves. [Applause] And now one and two. That’s inside. Man at first. One away. Outside with a breaking ball. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with three hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. [Applause] Swing and a ball hammered left field back there and that’s going to bang against the wall. Coming home the relay to the plate. He beats it safe and it’s now a six-run lead. He has had such a good day today. I don’t think he’s going to want to leave when it’s over. Couple of doubles today for the DH. [Applause] So, a man aboard. And now for Seattle, Au Heno Suarez. He has, as they like to say, let me guess, boo. Light tower power. That’s right. Runner at second here. One gone. Sliced hard but foul. just missed and a swing and a miss there. Two and two count. this to third. Slings to first and that’s an out. Fast groove right down the middle. Usually a lot of damage done with that pitch. A hard grounder, but he wanted to get that ball in the air. Maybe drive it into the gap. Mitch Garver up next for the Mariners. Go for two in this one. First pitch misses for ball one. [Applause] That one is upstairs. [Applause] Next pitch is downstairs. Runner at second. Two down. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. [Applause] Payoff pitch and down on strikes. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. Three runs on three hits, no errors, and a runner left. Onto the top of the fifth we go. It’s the Mariners seven and the Tigers won. Third game of the division series. And here’s the catcher, Dylan Dingler. Miller back to work. Well, every pitcher wants run support and having a lead is nice, but it can be challenging for some pitchers, I think. Keeping the mindset to attack instead of trying to be too fine and have too much finesse. Go after hitters and get quick outs. Swing and a fly ball. Well struck left field. Sizing this one up. Puts it away for the out. Up next for the Tigers third base. Now here is Zack McKinstry. [Applause] And that misses. And that is ball one. I can’t play around with him here. It’s a six-run lead at this point. Got to attack hitters even if you give up a solo shot. And he’s out. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Kabi Bayz digs in right side. Caught looking his first time up. And that’s outside and it’s one and0. [Applause] And there’s a ball. Probably looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. [Applause] Two down. Nobody on. That one’s in there. Two and two now. [Applause] Good eye in that spot. Two down, nobody on here in game three of this American League Division Series. Battling here as he fouls it away. Two outs and down on strikes he goes. He picks up his fifth strikeout on the hill. Tigers are shut down there. They’re down seven to one. Back in Seattle, here’s the center fielder, Luke. [Applause] And that’s a strike. He’s been known to jump all over the first pitch, so that seems like a missed opportunity right there. And it’s even up. Foul ball there and a ball evens a count. Goes down looking. Well, you could tell he wasn’t expecting that ball to break back in on him. He may have been looking for something away, maybe something soft, but that slider on the inside corner absolutely frozen. And the batter will be the shortstop JP Crawford. And that one is inside. Base is empty, one away. Last half of inning number five. Flares it into the outfield and it’s caught for the out. Now batting rightielder and stepping in for the Mariners, Leo Reebas. And that one sliced fouled [Music] late on that fast ball. I think he was sitting off speed there. Got him. Swinging. Mariners are down in order and they’re on top seven to one. All set for the start of the inning. Stepping in Parker Meadows. Parker Meadows. Ground ball right side. It squirts through. And that turns the lineup over. Back to the top of the lineup. Glabber Torres up now for the Tigers. Fast in for a strike. 0 and one. Torres, 28 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. [Applause] drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck back there. That’s long gone. That’ll fire up the dugout and they close the gap. It’s 73. That one just sounded different. And it might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I could feel that swing from the boot. Just an excellent swing all the way around. And it had that sound coming off the bat that gets everyone’s attention. Got a pitch to drive short to the baseball, squared it up, and the backspin carried it out of here. [Applause] And next is the designated hitter, Carrie Carpenter. Pitch is in there. Strike one. Can be tough to bounce back after a big home run, but nobody on, nobody out. You just have to treat it as a fresh inning. And that’s too high. Nobody on, nobody out. A pair of runs across in the inning. And we’re the top half of the sixth. caught him looking for the K. Wel Perez up now for the Tigers. [Applause] Swang at a highf fly ball well struck that’s back there and that one’s gone. It’s their second home run of the inning and they inch closer. It’s 74. First pitch hacking and it paid off for him in a big way. Well, he went up there o looking to do damage. I think he had his sight set on that pitch. He went and got it and circled the bases. [Music] So, one out, nobody on. Here comes Torque to the plate. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. [Music] Late with the swing there. [Music] That one 95 to finish him off. Now that two down, base is empty. Now the left fielder, Riley Green. Time’s starting to run out for this offense, isn’t it, Boog? I mean, it’s not easy to play in a must-win game, especially when you’re losing. Their season is on the line and they know it. That one pushed to the left and foul. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now 74. You’re watching the American League Division Series on the show. Back now for the bottom of the sixth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Paul Seawald. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Now it’s the second baseman, Cole Young. [Applause] That’s in there. And it’s 0 and one. activity in the bullpen. Kyle Finnean getting loose for AJ Hinch. [Applause] Sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Now batting first. And now the first baseman, Miles Mastroy. [Applause] Now the outside corner. Going one. [Applause] Yeah, that’s fouled off. Young gets his lead at first with nobody out. [Applause] Foul ball still 0 and two. [Applause] And the sweeper misses. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Now back in left fieldielder. Back to the top of the Seattle order. And up next for Seattle, Randy Roserena. in the air on the infield and the infield fly is called. [Applause] Now batting designated hitter Cal Raleigh in now is the Mariners DH Cal Raleigh. He had a big swing for these guys way back in the first inning. Yeah, Boo. He didn’t waste any time in this one. The solo shot really got his team going and he’s looking for more right here. [Applause] could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this [Applause] next offering upstairs. Tough spot right here. Couple runners on, two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Two on, one out. And another ball. And that’ll load the bases. His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one. Here’s a big power threat. Au Heno Suarez and the first pitch misses for ball one. This is situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield. And that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. [Applause] All loaded up here in the bottom of the six. Off the mark there. Two and one. In situations like these, the air can get really thin up there at the plate. Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down. popped in the air left side and the infield fly is called. [Applause] Now batting catcher Mitch Garver. Mitch Garver up next for the Mariners. 0 for three in this one. just missed. Base is loaded. Two down. [Applause] Now one and one. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. That one missed. [Applause] Base hit. One run is in. Now a long throw home. Safe. He beat the tag. It’s now nine to four. Love how he let that ball travel. Trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. [Applause] Digging in Luke and that’s in for a strike. Going one. [Applause] [Applause] This one in the dirt. [Applause] This one in the air. McKinstre should have this one. He makes the grab and that’s the inning. So, two runs on three hits. No errors, but two are left stranded. Onto the seventh now in game three. It’s the M’s nine and the Tigers four. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Edward Bazardo. He has a great slider with tons of movement. Number 83, Edardo. Now the catcher up to hit, Dylan Dingler. Tigers. This is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively. Fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate. Good game caller, good at framing, but it’s that big arm that really stands out. Foul ball. Yeah. And because he’s got the big arm, he pays attention to the running game and is sure to manage it. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. When you have a catcher that can throw like that, a pitcher doesn’t have to worry as much about the slide. He can keep his mechanics intact and have a better opportunity of getting that hitter out with a swing and miss. whips it across and they get the leadoff hitter in the seventh. Third base Zack Mckinry. Now the third baseman, Zack McKinstry. Clips the corner. That’s strike one. [Applause] That’s down and in. A slider missed. The Mariners leading by five here in the late stages of game three. Hit hard on the ground to short. Jump throw and very nicely done for the out. Here’s Bayz who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. And that one clips the corner. [Applause] Two down, nobody on here in game three of this American League Division Series. That one misses and that’s ball one. One and one. And that drops in for a strike. That’s the ball. Swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Everything came together for him. wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. And now the center fielder Parker Meadows on the ground right side and foul ball. [Applause] tied him up inside with that one. Talk about tying a guy up. That was ugly. Bayz the runner at first with two gone. [Applause] That one missing inside. [Applause] That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. That’s outside. Two balls, two strikes. to the right side. Oh, nice play from his knees. The throw and that’s a nice play to end the inning. Making it look easy at the Keystone position. Definitely worth another look. He’ll get some high fives when he gets into the dugout. Now pitching. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Kyle Finn again. Well, they need someone to stop the bleeding and keep this score right where it is. Seems like a tough task today with the way this lineup is swinging. It now it’s the shortstop. JP Crawford one for three. JP Crawford [Applause] and a fast ball misses outside for a ball. One and0. [Applause] swings through that one out in front that time. [Applause] And that one fouled off. Well, pretty clear to me he was trying to go deep right there. But you got to get a pitch that you can handle. Liner base hit and the leadoff man aboard. Leo Reebas digs in now. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. That clips a corner. [Applause] That’s the ball. Rudder at first with no outs here. [Applause] Cut on and lifted in the air. One away. Now batting number two, Cole Young up next for the Mariners. [Applause] And first offering is fouled off. Runner on the move now. Fly ball to right center. Meadows on the move. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s two down. Now batting first baseman Miles Mastro. So a man aboard. Miles Mastroy getting ready to hit. [Applause] swings and misses. That’s strike one. From a pitcher’s perspective, that’s a beautiful splitter right there. As a hitter, you don’t like it, but he’s commanded his fast ball and out of that same tunnel, that splitter comes and the bottom just falls out of it. Swing and a miss and a count is 0 and two. A lot of times you’ll see a pitcher maybe double up on a pitch. This guy will throw it three times, four times in a row because hitters just can’t lay off of it. In the air, left field down the line and that’s a foul ball. [Applause] Two outs. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Third out and that ends the frame. They get a leadoff single but leave him stranded. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the M’s nine and the Tigers four. Now pitching. Welcome back. Get a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Ryan Woo. And he’s got a nice lead to work with so he should come in throwing strikes, attacking these hitters. So, back to the top of the order. Here comes Glaver Torres. Torres. Swinging a foul straight back. That’s the ball. Whacked out to center field. That’s well struck. that one back there. It has the distance gone. Another homer, his second home run of the game. And they cut into the deficit. It’s 95. Singy. The ball is jumping off his bat. Yes, it is. Tons of loud contact. Man, it’s been impressive. That’s exactly the pitch he was looking for. Crushes it and hits it out of the ballpark. Now it’s the DH Carrie Carpenter at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. That one pushed foul. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. And we’re in the top of the eighth. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2 [Applause] and ball one. fights that one away. Still one and two. Two and two. And that’s outside. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. [Applause] Wel Perez now at the plate. Part of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. first offering and it just misses. And he drops it down the third baseline. Grabs it bare-handed, but no chance. That’s an infield single. Now that he was racing down the line and probably didn’t assume he was going to be safe until his foot hit the bag and looked up for the umpire. Nice bunt and great hustle to get himself a knock. Run around at first with one gone. Spencer Torqulson will hit next. Went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform, but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Highfly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. Hit on the ground. Might be two. And they get Torqulson for the out. Now batting left fielder Ryan Green. Manager out of the dugout. And he’s going to make a change. Ryan Woo won’t go any further. that he’s responsible for the runner on second. So, the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. They hand the ball over to a new arm, Gabe Spire, and they felt it was time to bring on a left-handed reliever from the pin with the lefty hitter coming up. I think it’s a good move. I know. I never liked when opposing teams did that to me. [Applause] Riley Green up now for the Tigers. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Right through there for a strike. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. And that one misses up and in. Now one and two. Paris on it. Second with two down. [Applause] Swang and a miss. Struck him out. Inning over and it could have been worse. But not before they answer back with a solo home run. It’s now 95. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Troy Melton. Here’s the Mariners leadoff man, Randy Rosarena. Randy Rosarena. Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. Next offering way off the plate and he grounds one to the right side and it’s through for a hit. had a good start to the inning. So now the DH spot, Cal Raleigh. He’s one of the best players in the game. And that is cut on and miss. It’s 0 and one. Outside corner, there’s a strike. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Raphael Montero up and throwing. [Applause] That one misses. And that’s ball one. And there’s a ball. Grounder might be two. Offbalance feed. There’s one. How about that double play? They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. Two outs. Base is empty. Here’s the third baseman. Au Heno Suarez. Fast for a strike. And he swings through that one. Good pitch right there. Tied him up on the hands. If I’m out there on the bump, I’m going right back in there. And a swing and a miss. Down on strikes. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. One hit in the inning, but no one left. On to the ninth. Now in game three, the M’s need just three outs to clinch a win in this division series. When we return, we’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Luke Jackson. Dylan Dingler up now for the Tigers. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strikeout. [Applause] slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats on the ground to third. Suarez and they get the leadoff man in the ninth. Now batting third baseman Zack Mcry. He’s two outs away. Zack McKinstry the next to hit [Applause] and a foul ball. Jackson a 62 righty. He features a slider a fourseamer and he occasionally uses a curve. Slapped hard the other way but fouled. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch, but just a little tardy on the fast ball. Down to the dirt, swing, and a miss. Gets to it onto first. Ow. Two away now after the drop third strike. I got to think that was the plan all the way. He set him up with a high fast ball and then bury that curveball down low to get him swinging. Now, especially with how effective pitchers work up in the zone these days, that’s a devastating combination. So, it’s their last chance in this one. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Javier Bayz. The shorts stop takes a ball. Swanging a ball driven out to center. That’s back there. And that one is gone. Oh, muscle to center field. It’s 96. That’s their fourth home run of the game. They can’t stop. And they won’t stop hitting home runs in this one, Boo. They’re clearly feeding off of each other at the dish. We take another look as Stackcast tells us that ball took off at 110 mph and plenty of distance as well. I mean, that was an impressive home run. Boog. He squared it up and knew it was gone. And here comes the Mariners manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Luke Jackson out of the game. It’s a three-run game, and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. Now pitching Andres Munoz on to try and close it out. I think closer has to be one of the toughest jobs in baseball and we see a pretty high turnover rate because of it. Every outing seems to be high pressure, this one included. We’ll see if he can wrap up the win and get himself a save. And that is it. They are headed for the ALCS. [Applause] [Applause]
