Jordan Ott Postgame Media Availability | Phoenix Suns | 10-24-25

got away from you. James Harden, Kawawaii getting going, but what did you see from the team? It was a little bit of everything there. I think even at the end of the first quarter, we struggled to score. I thought their defensive intensity picked up. Credit to Chris Dunn. comes in just reres havoc and then yeah as we just couldn’t get our footing in that second quarter as it progressed I think James got going at the end um sure when we go back and look it’ll be a little bit everything but definitely seemed to turn there towards the end of the first then the second um 38-23 in the second just couldn’t figure it out beauty of the NBA got another one tomorrow know crashing the boards has been an emphasis for this team the last two games. Ryan Dunn has combined for eight offensive rebounds. What are you seeing from his level of activity out there? Yeah, just his using his athleticism, you know, u finding other ways when shots aren’t falling just to give us other opportunities. Really thought in the first half that again that that helped us. Um I think we had 11 at halftime. I assume that they they talked about it fixed in the second half, but I thought in the first half we were able to kind of get us some second chance opportunities to keep the gap there pretty close um again until till probably midway through that second quarter when when James got going. But um yeah, we’ll need them all. Ryan Ryan different ways to impact the game his defensive ball pressure, his activity overall defensively and then offensively, you know, he can really help us by getting on the glass. Coach, when you look at, you know, when you give up 52 points in the paint and a team shoots 55% from three, it’s hard to win a game like that. Um, defensively, was it a matter of just them making shots or do you feel like there was some lapses defensively as far as either switching or not applying enough pressure? Yeah, when something like that happens, it’s a little bit of everything. Um, like I said, I think the parts of time like just their steals they did 12 steals, you know, that leads to to breakaway layups. That’s your paint points. Um, at times, you know, James gets downhill, puts a lot of point paint pressure on you. And then even Kawhai at times he’ll get in the lane two feet, just puts a lot of pressure on your defense. And um, you know, part of that was our offense. I think part of it was our offense, but again, go go look at it. Um, think we had some breakdowns, but I think just overall it was just where they were catching the ball. Then they were spraying it out and they shoot 55, that was 60 some percent for most of the game. Derek Jones had a great shooting night. Um, and obviously James did in that first half. Players have talked about, you know, you guys working on defending to the limit. There’s a limit. Okay, let’s get to that point. Do you feel like how would you assess that because the foul numbers show that maybe it went too far, but how would you assess that aspect of of the defense tonight? Yeah, this is a tough team, you know, tough team. They do get to the free throw line. Um, they have some guys that have done it their whole entire careers. Um, I remember a couple in that first half, especially, you know, Harden’s one 30 feet from the basket. He acts like he’s shooting it. So, those things are hard and we’ve, you know, we got to keep teaching, teaching better. Um, he’s one of the best to ever do it. And that was, I think, before he really got going. You know, when you put a guy like that to the free throw line, three of them go in, maybe that, you know, hurt comes back to bite you as that quarter progresses. So, yeah, we want to defend to the legal limit. Um, at times, obviously, those silly ones we want to take out. The last thing I had was, you know, Devin just getting 10 shots since I know he gets to the free throw line and people has not added into that number, but how can you get him more shots or what could you have maybe done differently more tonight to get him more shots? I think I’ve talked about it. It’s like every night’s a different defense, a different scheme. Um, you can see at times when he is in the paint, there’s so many guys around him and I I feel like we got some quality looks out of it. You know, he had seven assists. It felt like there’s some of those looks that could have gone in. He easily could have had double digit assist tonight. So, yeah, we’ll continue to look at it. We obviously want him to just be aggressive and then make the right play and he’ll continue to do it. Um, again, we’ll we’ll take a look, but it did feel like we got some good spray outs from that. We shoot 47 threes. Obviously, they were trying to protect the paint and give us something. So, yeah, we’ll we’ll continue to look. Coach, along those same lines, uh, with Devin, is it how important is it for him to have these reps getting multiple bodies early on to where, you know, it’s something you can work through early in the season? Yeah, exactly. I think, you know, it’s different. It’s slightly different than than his role has been. Um, and then they have length and they have multiple, you know, the starters and then the bench comes, Chris Dunn comes, he’s an elite defender. And seeing that with a seven foot center, both both centers are up there aggressive. Um, maybe at times we could hit the role and play through the role a little bit more just overall in general. Um, but yeah, it’s great reps. You know, I think every night every opponent we played the two different opponents in the preseason and now these two, they’ve had a different defense every single night. So, we’ll continue to look and see what we can do. I’m just also wondering about OSO. Um, what have you seen with him in that starting unit and obviously tonight had a tough test. One of the best bigs in the league he’s going against. Yeah, with also he just brings a unique piece to us. Um, he kind of connects us at times, helps us with some of that pressure offensively. His speed overall really helps us. Um, and pick and roll. He can be up and more aggressive at times. He can switch. I think overall he’s been pretty good. you know, he’s had a great lead up to camp into the preseason and now he’s getting these great reps against, you know, allstar really, really good centers. So, I think overall he’s been really, really good. Um, but yeah, you know, the points in the paint is is something that always with OSA we’re going to have to address and it’s got to be with bodies. The rebounding thing is always going to be something we address with them. So, I think overall he’s been good. We’ll keep looking. All right. So, hi coach is Raymond from Titan Sports. So, um I’ve seen like you had a great center dips, but like rookies like also also like veterans like Mark Williams. So, how are we going to see those rotations in the future? Do we see like Mark’s row in a team’s going to switch or what’s your expectation on Mark’s roles in the future? We’ve had we have great center depth. I’ve talked about it multiple times. I I felt this was the first night we struggled overall obviously, but with you know, it’s just a different size. We tried to move our five on to someone else um onto a guard a little bit tonight. I feel overall we we’re in a great position with our center depth. You know, you have guys that, you know, Nick’s the oldest and I think it’s his sixth year in the league. So, we have guys that um you know, are young that are growing, that are developing, and they all kind of bring their own unique um skill set. So, I think overall it’s been pretty good. I think tonight they got us a little bit, but again, tomorrow night’s another test for those guys, and it’ll be interesting to see how we can help them. Um and then just the lessons learned over time with those young guys. All right. So it’s like it’s and do you have like a starting centers for your team or it’s like the four of the guys are compet are compete like every night for their own chance to play in a starting lineup? Yeah. Also started the last two nights. He started the four in preseason. He’s our starter. I think we just have to see it progress. This is only the second game for Mark, you know, and Kaman’s 19 years old. So we’ll continue to evaluate. It is going to be fluid. It’s going to be fluid throughout the whole season. Thank you, coach. Thanks,

  1. Sheer and Maluach are just better rotation pieces already. Just a matter of time. This team will look very different when Green is out there and Grayson is the first guard off the bench instead of Gillespie. He's playing his ass off but he's doing too much and a liability on D. Oso is a small ball 5 and a good one but he was eaten alive by true 5's tonight. Mark and Maluach are a much stronger big rotation. It's early and there's a lot to learn. Mark is still getting his legs under him but the sky is the limit for Sheer and Maluach. Can't wait to see this team when the youth are ready to take the wheel.

  2. Bryce James should bring size and talent in next Draft to Arizona basketball. Keep him in AZ and pair him with Arenas (sons for Suns). Trailing by 20 points often won't cut it in PHX.

  3. Clippers, one horrible loss one blowout win. Suns, one horrible loss, one great comeback win. Both 1-1. We are right there with the West. Wait for 20 games before you make any assumptions.

  4. I would say making OSO a 4 and Williams at 5 would create something good because OSO can handle the ball make him a point/power forward and Williams an actual center it just makes the most sense we have maluach and nick Richard’s as back up centers

  5. One thing a new coach and a new team should do so early on in a season os be true to an existing line-up that feels right on paper or build it based on senority. The starting combination of players JUST DOESN'T WORK. I get it, some say it will get better when Jalen Green joins the team because he brings something different. I've been a Suns fan for nearly 50 years and also have played the sport over 70% of my life, and what I see thus far will make for a long season IF Jordan Ott becomes stubborn like last years coach and pick and choose favorites so early on. Last night the 3 unit offered mire than the starters and 2nd unit. When you have Nuck Richard's, our rookie center, and Mark Williams on the bench and you state that Oso is your starting center, WE ARE ALREADY IN TROUBLE. Out we are watching you and you're replaceable or may be replaced by the Allstar Break by Steve Nash if these guys lose the next 10.

As a fan, I need to see you take more risk and play with the starting lineup (matter of fact, all rotations until the end of November). Its clear the starters lack shooting and a floor general and a rebounder. Oso is clearly getting out rebounded by Colin Gillespie, that should tell you something. Dillion is taking 3xs more shots than Booker, and Booker hasn't proved he is the same guy we saw in the bubble, which is the reason we continue to have to look for a Allstar or Superstar to play along side of him. Either you have the Mumba or you don't. Even if we decided to trade him later on, the longer he plays and contributes to losing, now he becomes a player that no other team would consider paying that type of money for.

Long story short, we are too early in the season to here excuses and the team to be locked in on a mismatch roster. We need to see some flexibility in player rotation. If your at the office before everyone arrives and there after everyone goes home, if you're not getting results, maybe you have the wrong people I your corner giving you advice. So far, respectfully as a Suns fan this doesn't look good. Especially considering there are other guys on the bench that bring something different that can effect your team.

All 3 rookies should be in the rotation. They a have length and good, but have the ability to be great in their roles. You have a lock down 3pt shooter, you have a elite 3 and D Wing with length, and then a rookie center who is versatile, lenghty and plays with edge. (Just ask Ayton who tried to push him around). Oso should b the 4th center off the bench not the starter.

Don't let this one get away before the end of October. Let's see what type of excuses we get after this one.

    Here's my starting rotation suggestion;

    5. Mark Williams
    4. Khaman or Fleeming
    3. Brooks/Royce
    2. Book
    1. Gillespie

    Seconds:
    5: Nick Richard's
    4. Dunn or Rasheer
    3. Brea or Nigel Hayes
    2. Grayson
    1. Butler (but you traded him) /Goodwin

    3rd string
    5. Oso
    4.CJ Huntley
    3. Isaiha Livers
    2. ?
    1. ?
