Should Yankee fans root for Don Mattingly’s Blue Jays? | Back Page Banter

Do it for Donnie. Jay’s on quest to get Maddingley finally in the World Series, his first ring. So, uh, Yankees fans asking for a friend here. How you going to be watching this World Series? Is it still we’re going to live by the cold, New York or nowhere? Or are you going to root for your divisional rival who knocked you out of the postseason so Donnie Baseball can get his first ring? Let’s talk about the man first because I understand the confliction. We are talking about a 14-year captain for the Yanks who only went to the playoffs once during his career here, but he embodied what it meant to wear pinstripes. Six-time all-star, ninetime gold glove winner, and the man’s number 23 jersey is immortalized in Monument Park already. Young Yankees fans, get on chat GPT and ask who this guy is. But I want to know, this brings me back to that question. Do you throw all that out the window because Don Maddingley’s Blue Jays are playing in the World Series? How are you going to justify rooting for a rival team to win it all and they sent you to Cancun? It reminds me of some of those Giants fans last season who they would be the ones that say, “I’m not rooting for the Eagles to win the Super Bowl. I’m rooting for Seaquan.” Absolutely not. I went full TK Barber. Seaquan was dead to me because he was with the Eagles. This isn’t one of those things where, oh, I can remove the man from the logo. No, if you’re a Yankees fan, there’s a code. And no matter how old you are or how old you were when the Yankees glory days were back in your time, the code is the code. It’s New York or nowhere. That’s what makes New York sports New York sports. For more on this article and all things World Series, head on over to new yorkpost.com/sports.
