The Carolina Hurricanes Get their First Loss of the Season in the Desert
Unfortunately, the Hurricanes run to an 82-0 season came to an end on Monday night with the Golden Knights winning 4 to1 as the house decided to take a win and give the Hurricanes their first loss. But decide besides what the score indicated, which doesn’t tell the whole story. It was a game where the Hurricanes had a shot, just unfortunately came up short. But there were some good things to talk about which we will discuss here on a Tuesday edition of Locked on Hurricanes. You’re Locked on Hurricanes, your daily podcast on the Carolina Hurricanes, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. Welcome to the Tuesday edition of Locked On Hurricanes. On the Tuesday edition of the show, we are going to talk about the main takeaways from the Hurricanes 41 loss to the Vegas Gold Knights on Monday night. We do get to talk about Nikolai getting his first point with the Hurricanes after the first six games of the season and talk about Charles Alexis LGO in his debut with the team and then we get to hear from Rod Brenammore postgame, get his thoughts and then we are going to react to that. Now, I know the score does indicate a 41 for the Golden Knights. Think, okay, this game was probably taken out early. You know, the did the Hurricanes have a shot? Stuff like that. It was two to one after the first two periods, but then Vegas did score one in the third and then an empty net to put it away. But if you look at the tail of the tape for the Carolina Hurricanes, they did outshoot Vegas 27 to 26. Out hit them 15-13. Block shots were 20 to 18 in favor of the Golden Knights. You know, both power plays went 0 for four. So, while the PK for the Hurricanes did go four for four to shut down a very good Golden Knights power play, which was third in the NHL, unfortunately, the 29th ranked PK by the Golden Knights were able to shut down the 29th ranked power play by the Hurricanes. And now the Hurricanes are still only have two power play goals through the first six games of the season. But on paper, this game was pretty close all things considered. It’s just one of those things where you look at the Jack Eel goal off a stick of Kendra Miller and pass Frederick Anderson’s one of those weird goals where it’s just what can you really do for Friday. You know, I try to center the pass, puck goes off a stick of your defenseman and goes into the net. That happens pretty much almost every game. It is what it is. It’s just an unfortunate thing that happened, you know. And did Dorfiev or Dave, however you want to pronounce it. He had an give him credit I highlight real goal on the backhand. Does beat Alexander Nesian waits out Anderson to get the puck around him. That’s it is what it is unfortunately. But you know then you know Barbishv in the third period just got an opportunity and scored and then Carlson with an empty netter. You look at a goal that was off a defenseman’s stick. You look at a highlight reel goal and then you look at an empty neter. That’s three goals that the Gold Knights had that if you kind of if that plays a little bit differently, maybe this is a one-1 game and you’re going into overtime. But it’s just one of those things where, you know, it the puck luck happened to go to the Vegas Golden Knights away. They had the horseshoe. you know, they just had, you know, they rolled the dice perfectly and they came up with it. And in the end, you know, the Hurricanes, at least they did get one, you know, thanks to Sebastian Ao scoring his second of the season. Of course, Seth Jarvis keeps keeps, you know, his and AO’s point streaks alive and stuff like that. So now you’re looking at six games between both of those guys. And also too, you know, Nikolai Elers did get his first point with the secondary assist, which is great to see, and we’ll talk about that more in segment two. But at least there’s some good to come out of a game like this where it’s, you know, you get a AHL debut from Charles of the go from all things considered to look like he had a pretty decent game overall. Like I said, you do get Elers getting his first point with the Hurricanes because I know he was kind of snake bitten through the first five games. very close. Dig like those triier assists that don’t really count on a score sheet, but you can tell he was definitely close throughout it. Frederick Anderson makes a ton of huge saves. Probably you already have an early season favorite for save of the year. You know, you know, Mike Vansk with a lot of great calls. You know, talk about how he entered the matrix because he’s Mr. Anderson. But in the end, it’s just it you’re talking about two teams on a heavyweight bout between a team that was 40 and2 coming in for the Golden Knights, haven’t lost regulation. You look at the Hurricanes probably have one of the better starts the season going 5-0. This is a measuring stick game. And like I said, despite what the score says, 4 to1, it wasn’t like Vegas just was up 4 nothing and the Hurricanes finally got one. It was 2 to one after the second period. It’s just they were able to score two in the third with one of them being empty net. So, it’s one of those games where the score doesn’t really indicate what actually happened unless you actually watch the game and knew what happened if you’re just going by box scores and everything else. And the thing too is like you heard me talk about it like Hurricanes outshot them. The Hurricanes had like one less block out hit them as well. It was just one of those things where Vegas was able to capitalize on some opportunities and you know had some puck let go their way and that’s how you kind of won that game and now they are still undefeated in regulation. Unfortunately the Hurricanes have their first loss of the season but overall you’re talking about a team who’s still 5- one you know 51-0. They’re still 3-1 and0 on the road trip. And you know, it’s one of those things where it’s, hey, you know, you got one more shot against these guys later in the year. You know, it’s not that, you know, the world’s not falling apart or oh, that that’s the Hurricanes are done because they, you know, lost a game to a a team that a lot of people are considered to be a favorite to come out of the West along with Colorado and Dallas at the face later this week. But it’s one of those things where you kind of look at this game, okay, you know, it was close. Unfortunately, they kind of pulled away in the third a little bit. You know, there were some weird circumstances of some of their goals. You got a highlight role goal as well from Doro Fev. And it’s just it’s it’s one of those things where yeah, you don’t want to talk about moral victories, okay? Or you don’t want to talk about, you know, well, there was this that happened and stuff like that, but in the end, it’s one game. You know, we still have, you know, another 76 games to go at this point. The Hurricanes, like I said, they’re still 5-1 and0. They still have a winning record on their road trip. You know, they got two more games to bounce back and finish this thing with, you know, a winning record. you know, I don’t think you want to go, you know, 500 or the NHL version of 500 depending on if it’s, you know, there’s some overtime losses or whatever, but it’s it’s just one of those games that unfortunately just didn’t go their way in the house ended up winning. It is what it is. But, you know, and the fact that the Hurricanes are, you know, Alishing Gossar, you know, they’re saying it’s not serious. We did finally get an update. You know, it’s not serious. you know, he’s still on the trip. So hopefully, you know, the team gets Ghost back hopefully for Colorado because Tuesday is an off day for the Carolina Hurricanes. You know, it’s their scheduled off day. You know, travel and stuff like that since they’re going to Colorado. Luckily, the travel isn’t too far from Nevada. And then, you know, they play the Avalanche on Thursday, then they got Dallas on Saturday, but you so hopefully you get Ghost back. you know, you’re still kind of waiting to see if Jacob Slav comes back on if he comes onto the trip or not. But, you know, if you at least get Ghost back, you’re in a good spot for the if you’re the Hurricanes. You know, Vegas did not have Mark Stone, but you know, Jack Eel doing what Jack Eel does did lead the way a little bit for them. And of course, they got their other guys that kind of stepped up. Like I said, Ivan Barber was someone to watch. You know, Dur Fav was someone to watch as well. Thomas Hurdle, you know, Mitch Mner got a couple assists in that game. That’s someone you definitely need to keep an eye on. And you know, right now Vegas is really cashing on what MNER’s done so far. But overall, I think for this game, I wouldn’t say that this is like a, oh, this is a huge problem. The Hurricanes, you know, might need to address some stuff. It’s just a team that’s doesn’t have two of their top defenseman right now. You know, especially one in Gosser who was on a really hot start. It’s just the puck luck wasn’t there for them tonight. You know, at least you got some point tricks staying alive. You got Guy getting his first point with the team. You got a debut in LGO. So, you know, like I said, there are some positives to take away. You know, it stinks that they lost, but hey, it’s an 82 game season and unfortunately, no team goes 82 and 0, but they are still 51 and0 and we kind of just move on from there and look towards Colorado. Now, I did talk about a little bit here in Sigma. We want to talk about Nikolai Elers and Charles Alex Lgo, but we will dive more into that. So, stick around. We’ll talk about those two guys here in a second on a Tuesday edition of Locked on Hurricanes. The NFL season is here and Fendle has an offer you don’t want to miss. Welcome back to segment two of locked on Hurricanes your team every day. So we kind of talked about in segment one Nicolay Eers does have his first point with the Carolina Hurricanes. It’s good to see that he finally capitalized on a chance and did get you know off the schneide in terms of pointwise. Now the fact that you know it doesn’t matter if it’s a it’s a goal or a secondary assist or a primary assist. Nicola Eers does have a point with the Carolina Hurricanes after some great passing between him, Jarvis, and Aaho. Of course, you know, Eer starts in the Hurricane side of things, moves it across the ice, gets it to, you know, starts behind the goal, goes up the entire way of the ice, gets into the Golden Knight zone, gets it to Jarvis, and then Jarvis finds AO in the right faceoff dot and scores, and the Hurricanes are on the board. And honestly, that’s not bad when you look at what Nikolai did. basically started the play, got to Jarvis, who’s been on an absolute heater right now, gives it to Aaho and he scores. It doesn’t matter how you do it. If it’s a goal, a primary assist, or it’s a secondary assist, it kind of leads the way, a points, a point. You love to see it from ER. He’s been actually really trying. You could definitely tell that he’s been so close. It’s just unfortunately it’s either the the technical third assist or he just gets absolutely robbed and there’s really nothing you can do about that. Now, he did have four pelony minutes in the game, but I mean, hey, what can you do? But 18 minutes and 22 seconds of ice time. Did have two shots in the game. Did finish with a minus one, but he got the point. That’s all really matters. And, you know, it’s good to see that, you know, he’s finally, you know, able to get the monkey off the back in terms of the the point is there now. He’s still waiting for his first goal, which I think will come very, very soon, which you love to see from him. And of course it helps out that you know Seth Jarvis keeps his sixgame point streak alive along with Sebastian Aaho. Both those guys did finish with a minus two each over 21 minutes of ice time and they combined for five shots. It’s just one of those games where Vegas kind of had the top line’s number where they all combined for a minus five. But you know Vegas is a really good team. So is Carolina. But at least you I know a lot of people don’t like talk about moral victories. It’s like, okay, well, they didn’t win the game. You know, moral victories only get you so far, but at least from the mentals, it’ll help knowing that, okay, you know, there’s not that talk of, okay, well, you haven’t gotten your first point yet. You haven’t gotten your first goal yet, but you know, are you going to get there? How are you feeling about it? And stuff like that. So, for Eers, at least you get to say, okay, well, the point’s taken care of. you know that kind of the monkey off the bat is fine now he’s got to score a goal which he’s been very close it’s just it’s just not gone his way but all things considered you have to feel kind of good if you’re Nicolai Eers the fact okay you finally got the point you can kind of move on from that and go from there at least you did something with it so he finally got the luck to go his way he’s finally on the board after six games so now you kind of just move on and start hopefully seeing the points rack up which I think they will I think we’ll see the goals. I think we’ll see more of the assist. It’s just now it finally just cashed in for him at the right time. You know, it did get the Hurricanes back within two to one at that point. So, you kind of feel like, okay, maybe this is a momentum shift. Unfortunately, and it doesn’t work out, but you can at least say, okay, boom, Eer’s guy’s first point. And now we move on from there. Now, the other guy I’ve got to talk about a little bit here is Charles Alexis Lgo, who did make his NHL debut for the Hurricanes on Monday night. Now, he did finish with an even. He wasn’t plus. He wasn’t a minus. The top line of Miller and Walker did finish with a minus5 combined. Miller with a minus three, Walker a minus two. But, you know, Nikesian and Chaffield both finished with a minus one, Mike Riley with a plus one. But, like I said, Loat wasn’t even. Now, he did only play 12 minutes and 30 seconds. Was 20 shifts. Did have two blocks a hit in a giveaway in the game. So, all things considered, LGO did a pretty good job when, you know, called upon. Like I said, he finished with an even. Did have two block shots in a hit. He’s definitely someone who’s more defensively minded. He was the only defenseman who didn’t really have a shot in the game. Walker had four, had one, Miller and Sheffield had two each, and Mike Ria had three. And of course too, like I said, Lego did play 20. He did play 12 minutes and 30 seconds. So it wasn’t like he was on the ice as much as the other guys were, especially, you know, where his lineman and Riley played 23 shifts. He only played 20. But, you know, that’s still a pretty big moment for a guy who, you know, made his AHL debut against a very tough Vegas team and did hold his own. It was pretty cool the fact that, you know, for the pregame rookie lap, he did go bucket list, which was kind of cool for the fact that they try to have guys do that. I know there’s a small fine at the hurt that the AHL gives now to guys who don’t wear helmets and warm-up after a certain, you know, date or whatever it was for your debut. And I think no one, a lot of those guys don’t really care. And I don’t think the teams really care either. if it’s the guy or if the team will pay that small fine. It’s whatever. But it was cool that he was able to do his rookie lab did a bucket list. And like I said, did hold it his own. You know, you go as a you go as an even player against a very good Vegas Gold Knights team. It doesn’t matter if it’s 12 and a half minutes and he had 20 shifts. At least you went out there, you got some block shots, you threw a hit. Like you did your job. He is a more defensively minded defenseman. Kind of like a Jacob Slavven, you know. Of course, he’s, you know, the where they’re at in terms of their skill set is a huge margin because Jacob Slav is the probably the best defensive defenseman in the AHL, but LGO has really put himself into a spot where he could be NHL ready. And I think a lot of people look at him as an NHL, you know, ready player if called upon. And he was called upon. Rod Bernmore said it before the game was he put himself into a spot where he had a great rookie showcase, great training camp and a great preseason and put him into a spot where it was an earned call up from Chicago after Pierre Kachchov got hurt and they needed a seventh defenseman knowing that Jacob Slav would be on the trip. He comes in and he does the job. So yeah, I mean despite a loss in his first game in the NHL, I think LG goat did a really good job all things considered. And I, you know, I’m excited to see what the future holds for him. Now, will we see him, you know, in Colorado? Possibly if Goss Bear isn’t ready to go. If Gosses Bear is ready to go, you know, at least, you know, you got a a guy in LGO that you can kind of rely on if you need to put him on the ice, if you want to keep it, you know, even on three three left-hand shots, three right-hand shots, or maybe someone needs a night off or however it goes, at least you kind of feel good that LG go can hold his own in the NHL. And now you have, you know, however the defense plays out in the future, at least you got a guy on the right side that you can rely on when it needed to be. So, like I said, you don’t really want to rely on moral victories, but you have to feel kind of good if you’re the Hurricanes that you got a good one in Charles Alexis Lgo. Now, we talked about the game. We talked about Eers and LGO and their, you know, contributions in the, you know, in the Hurricanes game overall, but now we could hear from the head coach himself and get his thoughts and we will react to it. So, stick around and we’ll do that here in a second on a Tuesday edition of Locked Down Hurricanes. So like I said we talked about the game talked about the takeaways talked about Eers and Lgo in the game for the Hurricanes. Now we get to hear from the head coach himself and get his thoughts following the team’s 4-1 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights and we’ll react to it. So without further ado, let’s listen to Rod Brendammore right now. Rod, what did you see start to finish five on five? Um, I didn’t mind the game. Thought we played pretty hard. They had a, you know, a couple fortunate bounces in the first two goals. They made good plays after. I mean, that’s what they do. The talent level is obviously off the charts of this team and, you know, they they capitalized, but they were kind of, you know, first one we shot in our own net and then the other one was off of kind of bounced off us the breakaway. So that’s tough. And you know, I thought the rest of the game was pretty even. Both teams going at it pretty well. You know, I think both teams are over on the power play, so that wasn’t really a factor. Um, you know, we just weren’t able to find a find an answer. I thought we played okay, though. Jordan Saul was very complimentary of Freddy on the pen. What did you kind of Yeah, they they got elite talent there for sure and we know that at another level. Um, just the way he handles the puck can make his reads. Um, and so they had they had definitely us under under siege there, but like I said, we we didn’t break there. Um, you know, tough breaks, you know, that puts the game away cuz we were, you know, we had our opportunities. What did you see from the off the line tonight? I thought they were pretty good. I mean, I thought they obviously got the one, had a few other looks, you know, that that like I said, that’s uh they have to be on the score sheet and we would like to see us get a little more um you know, let the them on the power plays got they’re not really they’re not not connecting yet the way they need to to be to be real effective, but overall, like I said, the game was there for us. A lot of hockey left on this road trip. What’s the conversation with the group after first? Well, these are these are long, you know, it’s getting long. Everybody knows it, you know. It was a long trip being away, but um you know, we got to just regroup. It doesn’t get any easier. You’re playing now Colorado there right there with these guys. So, and then you got Dallas right after that. So, we hit in a tough stretch here. Um then with the injuries, it doesn’t help. I thought uh we we did a you know, pretty good job tonight. Did you feel that Keandre fell or do you feel like he was? Uh he fell, but he did get tapped on the hands. It’s it’s interesting cuz we have the exact same pen call on us on the or is it a little tap on the hand and you know generally that gets called because it’s a breakaway you know so um you know he did fall but he did get if you just if you slow it down there’s a hack on the hands and that’s by the law that’s a penalty all day everybody knows it and unfortunately they missed it. Big thank you to Rod Bernmore and the Carolina Hurricanes as always and you heard from the head coach himself. You know, talking about the Barbashev goal, it was, you know, Kaj Miller did fall down, but he was right. There was a tap on the hands that usually does get called a lot of the time and the Hurricanes have caught that during this road trip. Unfortunately, it wasn’t called. He did fall down, but by the letter of the law, that should have been a penalty, but you know what it is what it is. you know, nothing you can do about it now. But he did give some, you know, a little bit of praise to the top line for getting on the score sheet. And like he said, those guys have to be on the score sheet. Like it’s and we talked about in Sigma 2, Eers does get his first point. And then Aaho and Jarvis keep up their point streaks. So you feel pretty good about that. And you know, and Rody likes the game. I from, you know, reading and catching up on the highlights and stuff because unfortunately I had to miss it due to just having to go to work early Tuesday morning with it being a late start. Overall, you have to be pretty happy with the game. It’s just unfortunately the where the puck luck was. You heard me talk about in segment one. It’s, you know, a puck off a def a deflected stick from a defenseman who was trying to break up a play. It goes in. That happens a lot. You talk about a highly real goal from Don Feev. Nothing you can do about that. And then the other goal was an empty net from, you know, Cowboy Carlson, you know, from Carlson. It goes in. What can he really do? So, it’s one of those things where it’s just puck luck. Highly real goals than empty netters kind of helped the Golden Knights. This game was a lot closer on the score sheet. You know, if you look at the tail of the tape outside of just what the score says, you got to look at the context. And context says this was a close game. It just didn’t come out in the way for the Hurricanes. He also did mention the power play. You know, the PK did go four for four, which he loved to see, but the power play did go 0 for four, and that’s been a kind of a struggle for the Hurricanes a lot, but he knows that they’re going to get there eventually. It’s just you have to think at some point the power play’s got to get rolling. You can’t be two for four a lot, you know, six games in and now you’re still bottom five in the league on the power play after it was kind of a big question mark coming into the offseason or coming into the season and it’s still a huge question mark. So if we kind of see that turn around, but overall I mean it is what it is. You know, like I said, you don’t want to take moral victories, but you did get a debut. you jig a guy getting his first point with the team and you got two of your top guys keeping their point streaks alive and that’s what you really you know you need to see that um unfortunately you know you got to look at other guys on the team as well that I still feel like they kind of need to get rolling here you know and the surprising thing is like you look at this you know just very coke and yummy you know he did have two blocks in the game but only played eight minutes and 54 seconds. Eric Robinson had 9 minutes and 14 seconds and neither one of those guys had a shot in the game. You know, Jackson Blake to have three shots. So, you know, that’s still pretty good all things except for a guy who played over 16 minutes. You look at William Ker 9 minutes and 54 seconds. Didn’t really have a block. Didn’t he did have a hit in the game. So, there’s something there as well. I’d still think though you look at guys on the score sheet who you know Andre Fetchikov was a minus two in this game 13 minutes and 38 seconds only had 17 shifts did have two shots but that is still for me one of those things where if you need to get guys rolling and right now you are still looking at a guy invetnikov who is still one of four guys who hasn’t put a point on the board in the for the 21 guys who’ve been on the ice. Now, the thing is Charles Alex made his debut last night. Nothing you can do with, you know, not getting a a point in that playing 12 and a half minutes. Mark Janowski’s only played two games for the Hurricanes and that’s you know with Jasper Kokami being a healthy scratch and of course that’s you know with him still dealing with you know eye stuff and wearing a tinted visor and then Jacob Slavven only played two games he hasn’t even played on the road trip but Andre six games no points so far and he’s a minus three and of course the minus you know that’s after being a minus two last tonight. He does have 12 shots on the season playing 14 minutes and 22 seconds of average ice time, but that’s pretty much about it right now. And it’s you kind of have to hope that he gets rolling at some point because yeah, he’s been demoted to the fourth line for a good portion of this road trip. Yeah, the the minutes are limited right now. He’s on the power play two group instead of power play one. you’ve got to get him rolling and that’s kind of thing that it’s you’re you’re looking at game six and you still got Colorado and Dallas to come through as well. So it’s, you know, you hope that Andre gets on the score sheet before you come back home to Lenovo Center against Vegas next week because right now it’s just this is probably the slowest starting scene out of him to begin a season. So you kind of have to hope he gets rolling. But you know the top six is somewhat going. Like I said it helps with you know Aaho and Jarvis still kind of doing what they’re doing. Eer’s getting on the board finally. You know, you’re getting some contributions, some other guys in the lineup. It’s just, you know, there’s some other guys that you really need to see start making moves and hopefully helping out. So, only time will tell, but unfortunate is what it is. The Hurricanes did get their first loss of the season, but they are still 3-1 and on the road struck. They’re still 51 and0 on the season. So, you kind of look at this game be like, hey, it was there. unfortunately got away in the third period with a a goal from Ivan Barbashev than an empty netter. You know, you lose four to one, but this game is a lot closer than the score indicates. But now you move on to Colorado and see what you do from there and hopefully, you know, kind of turn it around. So, it’ll be very interesting on Thursday night where the Hurricanes take on the Colorado Avalanche for another measuring stick game against a team that’s really considered heavy favorites coming out of the Western Conference in the Avalanche. They sent Ghost home
That third goal sucked. Yes Miller lost his footing but that was still a slash to the hands! Let's face it with the Canes PP system sucking so bad (Umbrella with no net front) they wouldn't have scored but it may have been enough momentum to score 5v5 and tie it.
ohhh Nikky 1 pt in 5 games…Jet dodged a bullet
Svech is off and needs to get the fire back.
Insane cope. Dorofeyev could have two last night. If it wasn't for andersen this game would have been much worse. And they were missing starting goalie, 1D, a top six winger and a 4th liner.
Pretty sure the French pronunciation is – Ley – Gooo. No T on the end Zach
Bro LOL. âOut shot themâ . They had 1 more shot. Thatâs negligible . Out hit means nothing and even so only had 2 more hits lol. So goofy. Game was close but the better team won.
Honestly… Not a good game for the Canes and it exposes the team has not being a legit threat to the elite teams of the league. Our coaching staff once again is showing they don't know how to make these tools on the roster intimidating let alone productive.
"Puck luck" is not a thing frankly – in this league you have to be a threat to actually manufacturer goals consistently against the elite teams. The Canes still aren't that them multiple seasons later.
