🔴 LIVE: Washington Commanders vs Kansas City Chiefs |Oct 26th WEEK 8 FULL GAME|MADDEN NFL 26 SIM
Harrison Buter. Mike, Greg Olson with you. That’s Harrison Buter set to get things started. Off we go from Arrowhead and he’ll be brought down just beyond the 25 yd line. The Commanders take over. So, here come the Commanders and they are led by the offensive rookie of the year in 2024. Greg, it was such a good rookie campaign for Jaden Daniels out of LSU. I think we’re seeing this so often now in the modern NFL is quarterbacks who can hurt you both improv as a scrambler and also with designed runs coming out of the huddle. So, this is a tricky situation. And guys who can run with this kind of speed, you have to be very careful how you pass rush them. You’re not just rushing to a spot. It’s not just an X behind the center. You got to try to corral him and keep him in the pocket because when he escapes, big plays are to be had. They’ll stick with him again. And I don’t think he got there. Wrapped up at the line of scrimmage. And now you’re looking at third down. Great job here by the defense making sure that they have one defender responsible for the running back and one responsible for the quarterback. In this case, they decide to give it to the back. He’s taken down for a loss. They’ll motion over Samuel. They show jet sweep and instead run it up the middle and he’s going to be taken down on the other side of the 50 yd line. 20 yd pick up there. Good for a Commander first down. First down Washington. Third down and short. You decide to hand the ball off. What you’re really telling yourself is just pick up enough yards to reset these downs. But in this case, the back had a whole lot more in mind. He saw the crease and he hit it and it led to a big game. It’ll get forward to about the 42. Drew Tranquil up to make the tackle. He’s brought down at the 42 yd line. A three yd pickup brings up second and seven. They face second down and seven. Working out of the gun, it’s Daniels. That one is brought in by Terry Mccclure. pass. He’s going to be taken down at about the 30. A gain of 12. A pickup of 12 yd. First down, Washington. [Applause] Now a handoff running right. And a good job following his blockers. A gain of seven. It’ll be second down. by Drew Tranquil. Eight yds on the pickup. Brings up second and two at the Chiefs 22 yd line. The slot man in motion right throwing on second down. Daniels and he’ll be taken down. The gain is six and it’s a new set of downs. He picked up the first down. A gain of seven. First down Washington. Operating from the gun. Oh, they’re on him in a flash and he lost the football. It looks like the Chiefs have it and it is Kansas City ball. The defense comes up with a play in the red zone. Those active hands get to the quarterback, knock it out, and they come up with the recovery. Mike, we see this from time to time down here. When an offense is operating in the red zone, the field shrinks, coverage gets a little bit tighter, quarterbacks tend to hold the ball a little too long. And that’s exactly what came back to bite him right here. Throwing to get things started is Mahomes. It’ll be taken down rather swiftly after a gain of just three. A gain of four. It’s now second and six at the 29 yd line. From the 29. Here’s second and six. Now the first carry for the Ruters Scarlet Knight Isaiah Pacheco and he’s going to get this one out to the 43 yd line. Give him 14 on that one. And the Chiefs have a first down. Really nice job by the interior of this offensive line. It typically just takes one guy to distort the defense to give the back enough room to operate. And that’s exactly what they did here. And it led to a big game. First and 10. [Applause] Once again, it’s Pacheco. He’s beyond midfield to the 45 and they finally bring him down, but he gets it to the red zone. Brings it inside the 20. A huge run from Pacheco. 41 yd. Another Kansas City Chiefs. First down. First and 10 at the 16 yd line. Well, I’m not sure you’re going to find a better example of just pure speed in the open field than that run right there. I mean, when he got past the first wave, you got the sense that he might just be able to outrun everybody on the field. A zone read here and he’s going to keep this himself and he’s in. What a drive, Patrick Mahomes. Touchdown Chiefs. Well, they were not hiding anything there. The quarterback takes off and Greggy takes it the distance for the touchdown. And this was a run from the jump, Mike. There was no disguising anything. There was 10 guys blocking and one guy running. And in this case, it’s the quarterback taking it in for six. The extra point by Buter is good and the Chiefs will take a seven nothing lead. Commander is nothing. [Applause] So now it’s Bucker following the touchdown to send this one away. Samuel going to see what he can do. And he’ll be brought down pass the 25. Decent field position to start this drop. The Commanders offense ready to see the football for the second time. They try to hold on to the football this time. Had the fumbled on the opening possession which led to a touchdown. So they trail early as they get it back. First and 10 and he’ll get out five past the 30 yd line. A six-yd pickup brings up second and four at the 32 yd line. from the 32 yd line. Now here’s second and four to throw is Daniels. Oh, and this one’s going to wind up incomplete. That’s one you’d think he’d be able to corral. He can’t find the handle and it’s going to lead to a third down. And it was really the pressure that threw that play off, Mike. I mean, he tries to counter the blitz by going to the quick game, which is fine, but it just seemed like they weren’t necessarily on the same page and results in a drop. Third and short and it’s Daniels. Open man left side. He’s got it. He’s going to have the first down. And that one good for nine. And the drive continues. I think they’re going to have to be more creative here on the back end with the types of coverages they show this quarterback. Change the look pre- snap to post snap. Mix in zone. Mix in man. They got to make it more challenging on the quarterback going forward. and he got rid of that one quickly before the receiver even knew what was going on. That’s incomplete. It’s just a matter of time. I don’t care how good you are or how good a hand you have. You are going to drop passes. It is inevitable in the NFL. But it’s the guys that don’t let one drop pass lead to two. They have the ability to put it behind them, move forward, and they can’t wait for that next ball to be thrown their way. And not much there. Good defense held. behind the line of scrimmage. The speed and the get off by the big interior defensive tackle Mike. I mean, he got through there so fast he almost took the hand off himself. Third and 11 from the shotgun on third down. Daniels. First catch of the ball game for Debo. That’s a first down. These third down conversions are just so important, Mike. Everybody stresses we want to possess the ball. Give our offense as much opportunity to end as many drives as we can scoring points. So, if you want to stay on the field, you better be good on third down. to throw is Daniels on first and 10. Over the middle, he’s got McCclar and he’s close to another first down as he’s brought down just shy of the mark. Brings up second and two at the Chiefs 31 yd line. Here’s second and two throwing now. Daniels, they go sideline and he stays inbounds. Got the feet down in time. It’s a first down. That is a gain of 22. The previous play is under review. Had issue. Was he able to stay in bounds? The NFL rules, you’re looking for either two feet or a body part that is not a hand to be down with possession of the ball. No bobbling, the ball not moving around. He has control. So that’s what the referee is looking at here. And he can’t hang on through the contact. Incomplete. Good job defensively to meet him just as the ball was arriving. It’ll bring up second down. He’s got to find a way to hold on to that one. I mean, you’re right on the doorstep of the end zone. And listen, I understand that hit is coming, but guess what? That hit’s coming whether you catch it or not. And you get paid to make the difficult catches. And I would classify that one as tough, but you got to make that catch. Give your team a chance to come away with this drive with some points. There’s a lot of ways to get the ball in the hands of your running backs, and it’s not always by just handing it to them. In this case, it’s a simple checkdown. Picks up a good gain. Brings up third down. The ball inches from the goal line. Third and goal. It’s the quarterback with a sneak and he will drive his way into the end zone. Jaden Daniels. Touchdown Washington. [Applause] And this is what good offenses in the NFL do, Mike. It’s the ability to bounce back even if the onset of the game doesn’t go exactly according to plan. Everybody wants to take their opening possession and go down there and come away with a touchdown. But it’s not always going to be perfect. You turn it over on possession one. What are you going to do in response on possession two? Well, we just got our answer and they took it down for six. That ties the game at seven. [Applause] 12 time seven a piece and the kicks away. Rami now on the return. He’s across the 20 to the 21. That’s where the drive will begin. The Chiefs take over. First and 10. The Chiefs offense ready to take over for their second possession. The drive begins with a run by Pacheco. Trying to find some place to go, but nothing developing. Tackled behind the line. It’s a loss of one. of a yard. Back’s doing everything in his power to try to get that ball around the edge to the boundary, but just great pursuit there by this linebacker. Staying with his angles, running through contact, and he makes the play behind the line. Lost one on the last play. So now it’s second and 11. Out of the gun, here’s Momes. Got a man in. That’s where she rice and we’ll mark him down just shy of the 40. Mahomes finding Rice for the Kansas City first down. Well, it goes without saying. You want to play wide receiver in the NFL? Mike, how well can you change directions? How fast can you get your body from one direction to another? And when you can cut like this guy, I’m not sure how you guard him. That’s caught. It’s Isaiah Pacheco. And they’ll have it across midfield down at the opposing 46 yd line. Nice chunk here in this good looking drive. Pick up of 14 and a first down. First and 10. Every defense in the league, Mike, they stress the importance of defending the middle of the field. And in this case, that’s just too much room to operate. They have to find a way to close and cloudy up those windows, make the quarterback throw the ball to the sidelines, and you allow him to operate in there, especially with that much space, going to make for a long day. A pick up there of 28 yds. So, think back to earlier in the week, Mike, and they told us they want to get him going here early and often. So, I’d expect plenty of passes to head his way as this game unfolds. Very quick throw there, but not on the same page with his target. That’s incomplete. I’m not so sure he would have picked up the first down had they connected either way, but still disappointing outcome to not at least get a handful of positive yards on that last one. They’ll try again here. Second and 10. Right back to the air for Momes. That one is caught in the back of the end zone. Xavier Worthy. Touchdown Casey. But now to add the PAT. [Applause] The kick is good and the Chiefs will move out to a 14-7 lead. [Applause] So now it’s Bucker following the touchdown to send this one away. to return. It’s McAffrey and he’ll work this one past the 25 to right about the 28 yd line. The Commander offense getting those helmets back on ready to head out for their next possession. Off the zone read, Daniels going to hang on to it. A terrific run finally brought down, but he’s inside the 35 yd line. 32 yd line. Big play to kick off this drive. 41 yd commanders. And this is why you tailor your offense around a guy like this. I mean, every once in a while mix in some design runs. He’s got such gamechanging ability with the ball in his hands. And here he rips off a big one. He’s into space past the 25 and he’s going to be out of bounds, but they are in the red zone inside the 20. Gain of 13 yd. Give him 13 on that screen play and a first down. And this is what modernday running back looks like in the NFL. They want to be able to activate these players in the passing game. No different than they do with the tight ends and the wide receivers. When you look out there and you have a mismatch, you have a linebacker or a safety on your running back, he’s expected to win. And that’s exactly what he did here. There’s much room for error when operating inside. Dan Quinn wants a second opinion here. And he has thrown the challenge. They’re looking both at the feet to see if two were down, but also whether or not he had full possession of the football when those feet were down. The extra point by Gay is good and the Commanders will tie things up. We are all even at 14. [Applause] We are all square. 14 apiece the score as this one’s away. Ramiho now on the return. He’ll work his way across the 25 yd line. On the return the Chiefs take over first and 10 at their own 26 yd line. First down throw. Momes. He’ll get that one complete to Rice and they’ll be set up now up past the 40 with that one. A gain of 15 yds. That’s good for a Kansas City Chiefs first down. First and 10 at the 41 yd line. So we’ve played one quarter here on a Monday night. Knotted at 14 on the scoreboard. We’ll be back in Kansas City after this. The Chiefs have it here to start quarter number two as they’ve got it with first and 10. From the shotgun, it’s Momes. Mahomes pass complete to Rashid Rice. It’s a pickup of six. Brings up second and four at the 47 yd line. ball on the 47 yd line. Here’s second and four. [Applause] Now Momes. This one is caught by Hollywood Brown and he’ll be hon. First grab of the game for Brown. Good enough for a first down. And it’s a big play there for his first catch of the game. And not only does he get a nice chunk of yards, but now he puts his offense in plus territory as they try to see if they can end this drive with some points. Got a man over the middle. It’s worthy. And they bring him down inside the 25 yd line. Remember he had the touchdown catch the last time they had the football. Here he’s got a first down. Mike, you’ve heard me say it a thousand times. The easiest down to throw the ball in the NFL is first down. I hate when teams wait till later in the possession to throw the ball. So early first down completion, you’re on the plus side of the field. Now you’re thinking strike, touchdown, field goal. But either way, I’m coming away with points. That’s catch three just on this drive. And it gets his team a first down. Well, they certainly aren’t wasting any time marching down the field. And you only need one hand to count how many plays they’ve run. And yet they find themselves first and goal inside the low red zone. Throwing again. It’s Momes. This caught right side by Worthy. Number one, Xavier Worthy. A four yd gain brings up second and goal at the five yd line. The ball right on the 5 yd line. Second down and goal. Mahomes now to throw again. And he’s in. Xavier Worthy. Touchdown Chiefs. His second TD of the game. And this one gives his team the lead. And that is number two. Greg, he is off to some kind of start in this one. two quarters and two receiving touchdowns. Mike, this is one of those situations where as a defensive coordinator, you’ve got to give your group an answer because right now they don’t have one for this guy. But extra point is good and the Chiefs have broken the deadlock as they move out to a 21 to 14 lead. So now it’s Buter following the touchdown to send this one away. Samuel going to see what he can do and he’ll be brought down just beyond the 25 yd line. The commander’s offense and their running back set to go once more. They’re searching here for the tie score. Down 2114 and they’ll begin first and 10. His [Applause] drive will start on the ground and it’ll be taken down up at the 40 yd line. A gain of 14. Good for a quick down. First down Washington. This offensive line continues to be very physical at the point of attack. They’ve been able to give their backs plenty of room to run. That’s why they’ve already eclipsed the century mark here in the opening half. They’ll come up first and 10 at the 40. They’ll stay on the ground. This time the sledding becomes a little more difficult. They’re going to stop him right at the line of scrimmage. These are the impact plays that this linebacker is capable of, Mike. not only dissecting and determining where the ball was going, but then to shoot through the line of scrimmage and make this tackle for a loss. That’s a big time play by a really good player. On second down, it’s Daniels. That’ll be taken in by Crossky Merritt. And they’re going to work this down inside the 45. They get 19 on that pass play. Good for a Commander first down. If you’re going to give him this much time to scan the field, he’s inevitably going to find an open man downfield like he does here. That’s a great job remaining patient and letting that play develop. And he is stopped in his tracks. Loss of a couple on the play. When you can get this level of run support out of your secondary, Mike man, what an advantage for any defense. This defensive back clearly reads run gets off his block and he’s able to take down the back for a loss of yards. Daniels to throw on second down has caught. That’s lane and they bring him down but not until they get inside the 30 yd line. Taking advantage of that running ability gain of 17 and a first down. I can’t tell you, Mike, how many of these offensive skill players around the league, they look at man coverage as like a personal offense. After that last completion on the way back to the hoe, I think he had a few choice words for him. I think he said, “Hey man, you can’t guard me one-on-one. You better ask your coach for some help cuz if he doesn’t, you’re going to be in for a long day.” Give him 11 on the scramble and give them a new set of downs. The defense is going to have to come up with a plan for this quarterback using his legs, Mike, or it’s going to be a long day. They knew coming in he was a threat, but I’m not sure they thought he would be this effective this early. Here’s a designed run and he’s going to give himself up, but not before he picks up the first down. First and goal. Pretty clear why this offense likes to get the ball into the hands of this quarterback, huh, Mike? I mean, he is just so effective in this area. And now he has them set up first and goal from the oneyd line. First down and goal from the zone read. Here’s Daniels. A ball’s out. That’s picked up by the Chiefs. He’s inside the 40, inside the 20. What a big play from the defense. The long fumble return. It sets up first and goal and gives the offense terrific field position. And the only thing that play was missing, Mike, was the defense being able to return it all the way for a touchdown. So, give credit to the offense being able to hustle, getting back there and tracking that guy down. At least it gives his defense now a chance to keep them out of the end zone after that fumble recovery. A big opportunity here. First and goal. And that is caught in the end zone. He’s in. Rashi Rice. Touchdown Kansas City. That is a dream scenario. The offense handed the ball first and goal and Greg, they take it to the end zone for six. They’re not going to have many easier drives than that, Mike. I mean to get the ball not only in a short field but in a goal to go situation you don’t get a lot of those chances you have to cash them in and that’s exactly what they were able to do. The extra point by Bucker is good and the Chiefs have doubled their advantage. It is now a 28-4 game. [Applause] So now it’s Bucker following the touchdown to send this one away. To return, it’s McAffrey. He’ll get this up to the 28 yd line. Nice place for the drive to start. But Commander offense and their running back getting ready to go back to work. And he’s been a big component of the passing game so far. You see the numbers here in the first half. This defense going to need to find a way to key in on him because he’s eating them up right now into the secondary past the 40 and he’s going to get this one out to the 43 yd line. Terrific starter there. gain of 15 and a first down. Commanders first down. The trend around the league, Mike, is that we’ve seen that running back has really turned into a young man’s game. And there’s something to be said for having some fresh legs, fresh out of college. They love the dynamic ability this guy brings to their rushing attack, and it’s clear why. They’ll motion over Samuel. They’ll go play action here with Daniels. Oh, what a throw. slinging it across his body and complete. Call it a gain of 13. First down, Washington. He took a shot on that throw, but you don’t feel it quite as much when you pair it with a throw as good as that one. So, kudos for him standing in that pocket delivering a strike to pick up that first down. Blown back in the back field. He’ll get the carry here and he’ll get about foul. At this point, we’re going to need two hands to count for how many yards he’s averaged in this one, Mike. But unfortunately, it just hasn’t been enough to overcome the deficit here at this stage of the game. Ball on the 39. Here’s second down and four. Back to the ground. He’ll get it again. And that’ll go for a gain of about four. Brian Hook up from his safety spot to make the tackle. So, this team finds themselves now in a little bit of a tricky situation here, Mike. If they don’t find a way to start sustaining some of these drives and come away with points, all of a sudden, you’re trailing by double digits in the second half. You become very one-dimensional. You become very passive. And that’s certainly not how any team in the NFL wants to play. I don’t want to take anything away from the quarterback here, Mike. He did a nice job picking up that first down, but this play is won or lost by the big guys up front. They’re the ones who need to get off the snap on time, get leverage on the defender, and create the space needed for the quarterback to pick up the first down. And they bring him down inside the 25 yd line. complete to a gain of 11 on that one. Good for a Commander first down. Well, it’s been pretty clear this offense has wanted to get this running back involved in the passing game here in the first half. And with the success they found, I expect the rest of the game to go very similar. Daniels going to keep this himself. And that play going nowhere. The defense all over that one. They’ll bring him down for a big loss. The decision whether to keep the ball or to hand it to the back happened so fast. In this case, the quarterback thinks it was a keep read. The defense was there ready to stop him. Tackle for loss. So after the loss on first, here’s second and 14. From the shotgun, it’s Daniels. He’ll run again. and you’ll wind up with a short pickup as he slides to a stop and that’s going to bring up third down working out of the gun. It’s Daniels and he’ll just have to throw this one away. There was nowhere to go downfield and now it’s going to bring up a fourth down. Really nice sequence of plays here defensively. Not only to force the third and long, but then you really take away all the quarterback’s options downfield. Left him with nothing really else to do but to just simply throw that one away. Gaze kick is good and the Commanders will cut into that lead. And when you find yourself down double digits, you don’t want to make habit of settling for these field goals. It does allow them to chip away a little bit and cut into this deficit, but they’ve got to find a way to score touchdowns. Ramiho now on the return. They get across the 20, mark them at the 22 yd line. The Chiefs offense and Rasheed Rice set to take over once more. They built a nice lead for themselves here. They’ll try to add to that beginning with first down. [Applause] Throwing from the gun. Here’s Patrick. That one pinballs around, but it is incomplete. Travis Kelce, the intended target. And that will lead to a second down. There are certain guys, Mike, that have earned the right to make those tight window throws. And that doesn’t mean that he’s not going to get himself into trouble from time to time, but we’ve seen throughout his career, his ability to make throws that other guys are either uncomfortable or unable to make is a big reason why he’s kind of in a class all of his own. Noah brings up third down. You don’t need much. It is third and inches. Ben in motion is Brown. On third down, Momes going to fire. Deep ball for Rice. That one is batted away. Incomplete. No separation that time. Tightly defended. It brings up fourth down. This is a play call I don’t quite understand. Mike backed up on your side of the field. just convert on third down, get a fresh set of downs, and then open up more opportunities to put the ball in the air. Now you bring up a fourth down decision deep in your own territory. A fair catch called for and made, but hold everything. There is a flag backed by the kicker. It may very well give him new life. They’ll come up here. First and 10. To throw is Momes. Firing right side. Brought in by Brown. Complete to Maris Brown. It’s a pickup of three. Brings up second and seven at their 49 yd line. Second and seven. to the air once more. It’s Mahome and he’s going to be out of bounds. Gain of just a couple and now we’ve got third down coming up. You can see the eyes of the quarterback. He’s trying to push this ball initially downfield, but with the defense doing a good job keeping a lid on the coverage, he’s forced to check this ball down to the shallow route. But this is something that they know in the future. If I need a couple yards, they can come back to this play. Third and short. Here’s Patrick and he’ll be taken down, but good enough to keep this drive going. It’s a first down. Now KC going to use the second of their timeouts as they’ll stop it. Just a little bit over 30 seconds to go in this first half. from the 39. Here’s a first and 10. Patrick to throw to the outside. Catch made by Worthy and he’ll be hustled out just shy of the first down mark. That’s a pick up a nine and is going to set up second and one. a gain of nine. Similar to a tight end, the slot receiver is often considered the safety blanket. He makes all the difficult catches, tends to be a little bit more around the line of scrimmage. And so far today, he’s certainly lived up to that reputation. They put Kelsey in motion. Mahomes now to throw on second down and this takes him into the red zone. He’s brought down inside the 20 yd line. A gain of 14 yd. The future Hall of Famers connect Mahomes to Kelsey one more time for a Chiefs first down. First and 10 at the 16 yd line. [Music] The Chiefs will use their third and final timeout here. And they’ll get a chance to talk things over after picking up that first down. [Music] Harrison Buter on now for the field goal. From extra point range, a 33 yd field goal attempt. Bucker’s kick is good and the Chiefs tack on three more extending the lead here late in the first half. Just one second remaining in this first half and they will kick it away and he will not attempt to return. So this will come out now to the 35 yd line. First and 10 at their own to throw is Daniels on first and 10. Finding the veteran tight end Zack Z and he’s going to be taken down as time runs out on this first half of play. Okay, Mike, thanks very much. Welcome in everyone to the downtown Orlando studios. Scott Hansen and crew with you for a short and sweet halftime as this game’s had a little bit of everything to it. We’ll find out which side can establish some tempo in the third quarter as we’re ready to kick off the second half. Back out to our commentary team, Mike Taro and Greg Olsen. Scott, thanks. No rest at the break for a couple of, I’m sure, weary defensive coordinators trying to figure out how to stop these offenses here in the second half. Rami now on the return and he’ll be brought down past the 25. Decent field position to start this drive. The Chiefs offense looking to get back to work as we begin this third quarter. [Applause] On first down, it’s Momes. He’ll get this complete to Worthy and he’s going to get this to the 37 yd line. He had two touchdowns earlier. Looking to see what he can do here in this second half. That grab gets them a first down. Mike, think back to our conversation during the break. We’ve kind of both asked ourselves, are they content with this double digit lead? Do they come out and play conservative here in the second half? Well, it took exactly one play to get our answer. That’s over the middle and caught by Rice and they will bring him down on the other side of midfield. He’s got a touchdown on the books from earlier and that catch gets him a first down. Now, so far here today, putting points on the board certainly hasn’t been a problem. And plays like that are why. Think about it, Mike. Sometimes you just have to take what the defense gives you and not force something that’s not there. And that mid-range pass results in a fresh set of downs. That’s complete left side to Worthy and he’s brought down after a gain of six on first down. It’s a pick up of six. Not the biggest gain in the world, Mike. But what I really like from the quarterback is just the timing of the drop, the timing of the delivery and hopefully this can jump start this offense in the right direction. Right back to the air for Momes. And he got rid of that one quickly before the receiver even knew what was going on. That’s incomplete. Well defended there. And the quarterback’s trying to attack this defense outside the numbers. Those really wide angle throws near the sideline sometimes can be very hard to defend. So give a lot of credit to this secondary. They were all on the same page and the ball falls incomplete. That is caught. He gets the hook up with Price. And the defense can’t come up with a stop there. Gain a seven and a first down. City. The most impressive thing about this drive, Mike, has really just been their efficiency. They’ve just continued to pick up first downs, fresh sets of downs. We just saw there. that third down conversion. Continue to possess the ball. These opportunities to come away with points continue to go up. And he’s close to another first down as he’s brought down just shy of the marker. I’m not sure what was the more difficult aspect of the play. Winning his route verse man coverage or catching this pass cuz that quarterback, he put a little extra sauce on that one to get it there on time and he’s able to secure a really nice catch. And he’ll bring this inside the 15. That’s good enough for the first down. A sevenyd gain and a Kansas City Chiefs first down. First and 10 at the 14 yd line. [Applause] They’ll stay on the ground and stay with Pacheco. Hey, that’s about as exciting a one-yd run as you’re going to see all game. Found a way to dodge that first wouldbe tackler, but not much after that. [Applause] Hook him up on a second down and eight [Applause] from the shotgun. It’s Momes. He pulls it in around the five and they’ll stop him just short of the goal line, but they are going to have enough to convert. It’s going to be first and goal. City Chiefs. Even though defensively you haven’t been able to get off the field. This is where you got to dig your heels in. This is where you got to make a stand. Okay, so you’ve given up a long drive. Force a field goal. Field goals and takeaways. That’s red zone defense. If they can come away with three here, I think they’d feel pretty good about it. Trying to push the pile forward, but he’s not going to get in. They stop him up short. Well, after being stopped for no gain on first down on the ground, Mike, it brings up the question. Second and goal from the two. What do you do? I like throwing it. I don’t like waiting till third down to air the ball out. So, if they want to take a shot at the end zone, I think it’s got to be here on second and goal. This one caught the four. And this is not going to work out as planned. Tough spot to try to run a play like that. It is blown up behind the line. It’s third down. Almost seemed like the defender was getting the play call sent into his helmet just like the quarterback because he knew the play before they even snapped the ball. And that play had no shot. Third and goal. Momes to the goal line and in. Rashi Rice touchdown Casey that his second touchdown tonight [Applause] now for the point after he’s got it and the Chiefs will extend end this third quarter lead. The score, Chiefs 38, Commanders 17. [Applause] So now it’s Bucker following the touchdown to send this one away. Samuel going to see what he can do. He’ll come across the 20 and taken down at the 21 yd line. Commander offense and their running back getting set for this next possession. They find themselves down three touchdowns here needing to flip the script in a hurry and they’ll start it here on first down. They’ll motion over Samuel on play action. Daniels. He takes off and he’ll mark him down up beyond the 30. It’s a nice start to the drive. A gain of 10 and a quick first down. You know, Mike, I like everything about this play except the very end. You’ve already picked up good yardage. You’ve already picked up the first down. Now get down on the ground and protect yourself. There’s no reason to take those shots. Play action. Here’s Daniels. Now pass deep for McLaren that is caught and they bring him down there but it is inside the 10. It is going to be first and goal at the sixyd line. A big play there for Washington. 62 yds. And it’s hardly an exaggeration when I say Mike that he’s probably one of the most difficult individual assignments in the entire league. It’s like playing football against that really good kid in your neighborhood. He’s just hard to cover and and he will score. Washington. Jaden Daniels. Touchdown Commander. He’s got another one. His second touchdown of the evening. We were talking during the break, Mike. We felt that this was kind of a do or die drive. They felt like they needed to come away with a touchdown here. And now they’re showing a little life. Yeah, a little little bit of belief, don’t you think? Everyone on that field knows they’ve been a part of a comeback before. It’s a pretty big mountain, but a good way to get started here to begin this half. The extra point by Gay is good. And the Commanders are able to edge a bit closer. Matt Gay. So after the touchdown, here’s Gay to kick this one away. Rami now on the return. He’s across the 20, taking down just shy of the 25. The Chiefs offense and Rasheed Rice set to take over once more. So here’s a first and 10. down. They’ll start from the 24. Ben in motion is Brown. A first down throw for Momes. This one broken up. It’s incomplete. The defender right there with him. It brings up second down. Brings up second and 10. And I think when you look back on the first half, this was an element of the defense that really was missing. There was a lot of open windows, a ton of green grass for the receivers to make uncontested catches. So, nice change of pace here. Continue to force the issue and make these guys earn the catch. Wide, wide open. It’s Brown. He’s got it. And they’re going to move the ball all the way up to the 45 yd line. A gain there of 20. First down KC. And it really starts with the blitz pickup by the guys up front. I mean, the defense, they sold out. They’re trying to get home. The offense is ready. They end up using their aggressiveness against them and they pick up a nice gain through the air. First down throw. Mahomes to the left side in the hands of Rice and he’ll be marked down at the 45 yd line. That catch puts him over the 100 yd mark here tonight and it gives the team a first down at the 45 yd line. They put Kelsey in motion throwing again. It’s Momes and he can’t hang on through the contact. Incomplete. Good job defensively to meet him just as the ball was arriving. It’ll bring up second down. Sometimes it’s those footsteps. I don’t care how long you’ve been playing or at what level you’ve been playing at. and that defender’s bearing down, you really get a good idea what guys are willing to go through contact to secure a catch and in this case what guys are unwilling. That’s out to Brown right side complete and they bring him down but not until they get inside the 30 yd line. Two receptions for him on this drive. This one good for 16 yd. First down. First and 10 at the 29 yd line. Here’s first and 10. Now the former rushing champ. It’s Kareem Hunt. He’ll move the pile forward. Let’s give him a couple. Don Payne there for the stop. Two yards on the pick. It’s second and eight. Ball on the 27. Here’s second and eight. [Applause] Gray is the motion man here. Mahomes now on second down. A very quick throw there, but not on the same page for this target. That’s incomplete. Travis Kelce the intended target. And it’s going to bring up a third down. And when you look down the field, Mike, there’s just really nobody creating any real separation. And instead, he tries to give one of his guys a 50/50 contested catch opportunity, but with the coverage as tight as it was, it just falls incomplete. That’s catch three just on this drive and it gets his team a first down. A gain of 16 yds and a Kansas City Chiefs first down. I really like the rhythm that this offense has found. I mean, that third down, that wasn’t a layup by any means, but they made it look easy. Everybody was exactly where they needed to be. The quarterback did a nice job working through his progression, saying, “Okay, I understand this is zone defense. I understand where the limitations of the coverage are. I’m going to get to that spot on the field as fast as I can, deliver the ball, pick up the first down.” Nice job here by the defense. Did a good job just covering up everything for the most part. So once this ball was caught, really didn’t have much of a choice but to just head out of bounds and pick up a modest gain. [Applause] Mahomes now to throw again. He’ll and he’s into the end zone. Patrick Momes. Touchdown Chiefs. Touchdown Chiefs. And that is now a pair of rushing touchdowns. The quarterback giving it to them, Greg, with his legs in this one. And we’re starting to see, Mike, why this week this coaching staff told us they’re encouraging this guy to do this more often. His ability to be a passer, but also a rusher is an element to this offense that is hard for defenses to account for. But extra point is good and the Chiefs are able to extend the lead. Commanders 24. [Applause] So now it’s Bucker following the touchdown to send this one away. to return. It’s McCaffrey and he’ll be brought down right around the 25 yd line. The Commanders offense and Jaden Daniels ready to take over once more from the 25. They’ll go to work. First and 10 from the shotgun. It’s Daniels. That’s into the hands of the lane. He’s got it. goes and he’ll be brought down up around the 38 yd line. They get 13 to begin the drive. It’s a first down. So, first and 10 here now at the 38 working out of the gun. It’s Daniels. This one broken up. It’s incomplete. The defender right there with him. It brings up second down. He’s usually such a reliable target in the passing game, Mike. We just don’t see him struggle to come down with catches like that all too often. And when you’re one of the go-to guys on your team, I know the hits coming, but guess what? It feels a lot better after you take that hit after a catch than it does after a drop. A short one there. He’s got brought down. That pass is going to pick up four and bring up third down. And it’s third down. They’ll motion over Samuel on third down. They’ll throw with Daniels as caught. That’s Wayne and he’ll be out of bounds on the other side of midfield at the 45. Second time they’ve hooked up on this drive. This one good for 12 and a first down. [Applause] Daniels going to keep it on the zone read. The quarterback could have handed it. He could have kept it himself. I don’t really think either option would have turned out much different. Great job by the defense having a plan for the running back and a plan for the quarterback and they’re able to force that carry for no gain from the 41. Here’s second and six. Daniels quick to Debo and it’ll be brought down as we tick towards the end of this third quarter. It’s a gain of a yard and it’s third. So, no shortage of offense in this one as we end the third. Back with more Monday Night Football after this. Here now, third and five. Operating from the gun, it’s Daniels. He’ll try and get there on the ground. He will have the Commander first down. Able to get eight on third and five. An 8 yd pickup. First down Washington. This is an element that defensively you always have to be ready to defend. You can’t just accept that it’s a pass and be so consumed with the receivers downfield. You have to account for the quarterback as a scrambler. You can see why as he’s able to get out of the pocket and pick up the first down. Now Daniels throwing on first and 10 and this takes him into the red zone. He’s brought down inside the 20 yd line of 14. That’s a pair of hookups on this drive. This one goes for 14 yds and a first down. Really nice job there, Mike. All they’re trying to do is just clear some space for the tight end and then let him go to work in the middle of the field. Now they’re set up nicely inside the red zone. And he broke through the initial contact. Winds up getting about three. It’s second down. Best shot by the running back making the first guy miss, but it’s the pursuit by the entire defense. Even though he doesn’t get him down on his first try, the rest of his guys are all rallying to the ball and they bring him down for a short game. Daniels to throw on second down. He’s got it at the three and the Commanders are going to be set up for a first and goal on a pass play that moves them down to the one. And this is what the offense needed now after that last completion. You still trail here in the fourth quarter. You need scores and you need scores fast. So they cannot take their time. I wouldn’t be surprised to get them right back up on the line of scrimmage and try to score here now that it’s first and goal. And he’s not going to get in. In fact, he’ll lose yardage. They push him backwards. Their ground game ends up failing at the exact moment, Mike, where they’re needed the most. One yard to the goal line. That’s prime opportunity. Finish the drive, take the lead. But instead, they go backwards. On second down, it’s D under pressure and down he goes. They’ve got him back at the 10. That’s Drew Tranquil getting in for the sack and that’s going to make it third and goal. What started out as a promising drive seemed inevitable, Mike, with the way they were able to continue to move the ball that they’d find themselves finishing with points. But after that second down sack brings up third and long and this drive looks suddenly very different. They’re in four down territory for sure, but what can they do on this one? It’s third and goal. Third and goal. It’s Daniels. And he’s into the end zone yet again. Jaden Daniels. Touchdown Washington. And make that three rushing touchdowns. You think a quarterback gets a three touchdown day. It’s pretty good. A three on the ground. That Greg is excellent. It’s just so hard, Mike, for a defense to account for a quarterback that can do this amount of damage with his legs. And there’s a fine line, but I’ll tell you what, when they unleash him as a runner, he’s about as good as it gets. The extra point by Gay is good, and the Commanders are able to cut into the deficit. So, after the touchdown, here’s Jay to kick this one away. Ramio now on the return. And he’s brought down right the 25 yd line. Patrick Mahomes going to lead the KC offense back out for this next drive. [Applause] Here’s Patrick. He’ll throw it on first down. They’ll set up the screen to Pacheco. That’s a nice pick up on a first down throw. It’s a gain of eight. You see so many teams wait till third down to execute their screen game, but I like in this case the play caller changes things up. He uses the screen game on first down, which will have an effect on this pass rush going forward. How aggressive do they want to get after the quarterback cuz they got that screen play still in the back of their head. Short throw caught by the tight end Gray and that’s a first down. It will be a gain of eight. We hear the term RPO so often, Mike, and it continues to kind of trickle its way into the NFL. But remember, it’s a lot different in the NFL than it is in the college game where it’s a lot more prevalent. The lineman cannot go downfield. So that quarterback has to make a lot of really fast snapshot decisions or else it’s going to lead to a penalty or him holding on to the ball too long. So it’s something that teams want to implement but maybe not quite to the level that we see in the college game from the 43. Here’s second down and nine throwing from the gun. Here’s Patrick. A short one caught by Kelsey. And they’re going to work this down inside the 45. The future Hall of Famers connect. Mahomes to Kelsey one more time for a Chief’s first down. An interesting decision there by the play caller to put this ball in the air. Mike, you’re up by two scores. Traditional wisdom says, “Hey, we’re up by two scores late in the fourth quarter. We’ve got to keep this clock moving. You don’t want to risk an incompletion. Now they convert. They’re able to secure the catch and pick up a fresh set of downs. That’s going to enable them to continue to burn more clock. And without a stop, their opponent’s not going to get the ball back. He’s going to be taken down at about the 30. Give them 12 on that one. They are on the mark. Another first down. down. Nice job there getting the ball to your slot receiver and then letting him get to work. It’s a nice feeling as a quarterback when you can just have a short throw still result in a big game. They go right back to Rice. He’s got it again. He’s taken down just shy of the 10. These two got it going on. 19 on that connection and another first down. First and 10 at the so often we see a team that’s milking a two-score lead get very conservative especially in the fourth quarter but not this coach he says all right I might have a two-score lead I want to make it three he’s trying to put as much pressure on his opponent possible here down the stretch late not much happening there just a short game a gain of two brings up second and eight at the 9 yd line [Applause] Mahomes now to throw on second down and they’ll work this close to a first down. Maybe just a tad short. brings up third down. Here’s third down and a few inches. They’ll go with the sneak and he will score again. Patrick Maho touchdown Kansas City. Touchdown Chiefs. So he finds the space and breaks the plane for the touchdown. Greg, there are certain quarterbacks who just have a knack for that old school play. That play call sheet gets a lot easier, Mike, when you have not only a quarterback, like you mentioned, who has a nose for the end zone, but an offensive line that can continue to get such a consistent push. You put those two things together. I think he should call it every single time he finds himself on the go line. [Applause] So now it’s Bucker following the touchdown to send this one away. To return, it’s McAffrey across the 20. They’ll mark him down before the 25 yd line. That’s where the offense will take over. the commander’s offense and their running back set to go once more and he has put in a full game’s work and then some. Just an incredible performance on the ground to this point in the fourth quarter. He’ll step up and run this. Well, let’s give credit here to the coverage unit, Mike. There was nowhere to go with the ball for that quarterback. He had no choice but to just tuck it down himself and he’s able only to pick up a short game. Second down and eight. Here’s Daniels. He’ll get this into the hands of Debo and it’ll be taken down up at the 40 yd line. Number one. A pick up there of 13. First down Washington. And the Washington. It’s been tough sledding for this offense all day today, Mike, but especially here in the second half. So, they are just in desperate need of a spark, just something to get their offense into a little bit of a rhythm if they want to have any chance to find themselves back into this game here late. A throw on the run is complete and that keeps him ahead of schedule. That’s a first down completion of seven yards of seven brings up second and three at the 47 yd line. Ball on the 47 yd line. Here’s second and three. Off the play fake. Here’s Daniels. That’s deep for the back of the end zone. That is caught. What a throw. Zack. Touchdown Commander. I think so often, Mike, we put so much stock and really unnecessarily so in how strong all these quarterbacks arms are because for most throws it doesn’t really matter. But tell you what, for this last throw, there’s just not a lot of guys in the league that can not only throw it that far, but be that accurate. And you got a receiver with some speed that can get a step or two on the defender, throw it up, and it results in six. The extra point by Gay is good and the Commanders are able to edge a bit closer. 38. [Applause] [Music] Even with three timeouts close the two-minute warning, they’re going to try an onside kick late in the game. This is where you see teams really start taking some chances. And boy, this was a big one, but it’s not going to work out. Patrick Mahomes going to lead the KC offense back out for this next drive. It’s a three tight end. Look as they have it first and 10 now. Momes gives it to Pacheco and a good run there going to get him five yds. The Commanders will signal for the first of their timeouts and they’ll get together prior to this second down play. [Music] [Applause] They go play action with Momes. Got a man over the middle. It’s Worthy and they are in great shape. He’s taken down inside the 10. Now a timeout here by Washington. That is their second. They’ll be disappointed there after giving up the first down. First goal at the 8 yd line. [Applause] Mahomes going to keep it on a designed run. Nothing there. He is fortunate just to get back to the line. Now it’s second and goal. It’s a loss of one. Brings up second and goal at the Commander 9 yd line. Pick it up. They’re going to run out of the gun with Pacheco and he’s close to the goal line, but they’re going to mark him short. Put him down at the one. And he has been a handful to deal with throughout this entire contest, Mike. And they came into the game saying, “We want to impose our will on the defense.” And that’s exactly what they’ve been able to do. They’ll try to sneak it here. And he’s got another one. Patrick Mahomes. Touchdown, Casey. Touchdown. Lot of bodies down there, but there’s one with the football. The quarterback. It’s all that matters. Breaks the plane for the touchdown. And all that quarterback is looking for, Mike, is the smallest of creases before that snap. Once he identifies it, all that’s left to do is put your head down, get behind the big boys up front, and drive the legs across the goal line. The extra point by Butter is good. And the Chiefs will open it up even further here in this fourth quarter. So now it’s But following the touchdown to send this one away. Samuel going to see what he can do. And he’s down at the 23. And that’s where the offense will take over. On first and 10, here’s Daniels. And that ball incomplete. just didn’t quite get enough into that ball. You see sometimes the pressure, the rush force a quarterback to throw the ball off his back foot and I think there was a little bit of that here at play. You have to be willing to step up even in the face of pressure and get enough behind that ball to put that one a little bit more on the money. Throwing on second down. Daniels room to run past the 30 and he’ll be forced out of bounds. The screen works for 10 yds and a first down. The job of the offensive lineman is the key piece to a successful screen play. They have to balance this fine line between stopping the defensive lineman from getting to the quarterback too quick, but also let that defensive lineman think he’s got a free rush at the quarterback. That’s the balance and the timing that made this play so successful. And they’re able to pick up the first down. That’s a nice pick up on a first down throw. It’s a gain of eight brings up second and a yard at the 42 yd line. Second and a yard. Daniels going to throw again. and he does a nice job to avoid the initial wave. They’re going to get him down behind the line. That’s a prototypical coverage sack. All 11 guys on the field doing their job. Starts with sound back end coverage. Nowhere to go quick with the ball. The quarterback has no chance but to extend the play. Look for something late developing downfield. That was all the time this front needed to chase him down and bring him down for a sack. He’s got a man. It’s McFluren. Daniel’s pass. They get 16 on that connection. Good for a Commander first down. It just seems like whenever they need a big play on third down, you can almost guarantee that he’s someone they’re going to try to get the ball to and certainly easy to see why. Clutch play by everyone involved and keeps the offense on the field. Samuel there to make the catch. Daniel’s pass complete to number one Debo Samuel. A six-yd pickup brings up second and four at the Chiefs 38 yd line. They’ll work now on second and four. From the shotgun, it’s Daniels and he’ll be taken down. The gain is six and it’s a new set of downs. He picked up the first down. A gain of seven. First down Washington. So this one in the win column for the Chiefs. This was a game where both offenses were up and down the field marching the ball at will, matching each other point for point, but in the end got a few more defensive stops than their opponents did. And that is the difference in this one. And that’ll do it for my partner Greg Olson. For our entire team, I’m Mike Ter. This has been a presentation of the NFL on EA Sports. The Chiefs victorious. As we say, so long from Arrowhead. [Applause]
