TODD MCLELLAN HAS COMPLETELY CHANGED THE DETROIT RED WINGS

[Music] So, I wanted to start this video out by giving a big, beautiful shout out to RC522878 on the Detroit Red Wings subreddit, who posted this picture image of Red Wings head coach Todd Mlen in the Red Wings postgame thread of yesterday’s contest against the St. Louis Blues. And I wanted to just say, hey, it’s a great picture and uh kind of inspired the entire video thesis that I have for y’all today in this commentary because when I went to radio school from 2018 to 2020 in what was essentially my second and third years of making videos every day on hockey related topics, when I was in radio school, the biggest thing they said when creating any piece of content was that you needed to have a point. You can’t make an article, a commentary piece, a radio hit, an editorial segment, a podcast, a broadcast, any bit that you have that uses your words and broadcasts it to an audience. You need to have a point. And I’ll just be upfront and honest with you about what the point is for this video. The point is Todd Mlen’s a pretty good coach. That’s it. But the ways in which we talk about why Todd Mlen is a good coach and how he allows himself to be seen as a good coach, I think are really the interesting bits about it. So obviously we are talking again about the Detroit Red Wings versus St. Louis Blues game yesterday and my golly g if that wasn’t the most exciting Detroit Red Wings game in years literal years I don’t know what shortterm game that has happened in the past few months even compares to what we had seen yesterday sure there were some comebacks and sure there were some other star-studded games but down 4 nothing and then rallying back to win 6-4 in regulation. That’s incredible. That’s the most exciting Detroit Red Wings home game against the St. Louis Blues since, I don’t know, a very particular game a few years ago where Gretzky had it and lost it. That game also happened to have featured Steve Eisermanman, although he had much more of an impact in that one than he had yesterday building the team that went on the ice as the GM. But yesterday, the wings were incredible. And I unfortunately was not having my eyes glued to the television watching that game because you had the Vancouver Conucks and the Montreal Canadians game going on. You had the Blue Jays. Shout out to Yoshobu. Fantastic pitcher. Japan just produces some fantastic baseball players. It is incredible. But then the Red Wings and the Blues game was also on. So, I had to have my eyeballs on three different sports programs going on all at once. And I wasn’t even really paying attention to Detroit by the time it was 3 nothing St. Louis. I was like, “Ah, well, the Wings are going to lose. Let’s just focus on show. See what happens.” But once my phone started blowing up with notifications on goals and goals and goals and goals and goals, we collectively all started freaking out because the Detroit Red Wings in the span of just a few minutes were able to turn a 4 nothing game into a 4-3 game. And then they took the lead and stormed forward in the third. And it all boils down to what I think a lot of Red Wings fans internally believe, but don’t fully acknowledge as much as they probably should. It’s the fact that Todd Mlelen is almost generally seen as the mastermind who is able to bring this performance out of the team. It’s not like Derek Leon isn’t capable of coaching a hockey team to winning a game after being down 4 nothing. It’s not like he’s incapable, but if you had to wager a bet who’s a lot more likely to do that, Mlen or Leand, you would all say Todd Mlen. Even if yesterday’s game didn’t happen, let’s just say it didn’t exist. Yesterday, the Red Wings had a day off. Nothing to do. They’re going home. They’re, I don’t know, celebrating Halloween. They’re dressing up. They’re doing stuff outside the rink. Let’s say yesterday’s game didn’t happen. If I still asked you that question, hey, who’s more likely to help a team come back down 4 nothing? Same team, same roster, same whatever, just who’s the coach to do it, Leander McClullen? 100% of Red Wings fans would say it’s Todd Mlullen. And so far throughout the course of the year where the Wings have gone through some ups and downs when the team started out a little bit sloppy in the opening game of the year and then when the team went on that little mini losing skid before yesterday’s extreme comeback. There was no blame tossed out there on the coach in the same way we saw with Derek Loland. Now sure I get it. It goes down with sample size. The fact that Leon had a much bigger body of work with the Red Wings really put fans in a more cynical and let’s just say toxic spot a year ago when the team wasn’t winning and everybody kind of thought, “Yeah, well this coach isn’t good enough to help that team win.” Todd Mlen, on the other hand, when the team goes on a little losing streak, it’s like, yeah, well, they’re just not playing for Todd right now. They’re not doing it well. Todd’s a good coach. He’s just got to dig it out of them. This team personnel issues, you’re starting to see sometimes they just don’t have what it takes. But then on a night like this, it’s like, yeah, guess what? They do have what it takes. They have what it takes to get goals from everybody not named Raymond or Larkin or Cider. Sixgoal comeback and you didn’t have any points from those three. Like you need points, you need goals from Alex to Brinket. Absolutely. He had to get this monkey off the back at some point. Finally, first goal of the year and now he’s going to start scoring even more goals, which is amazing because I have him in fantasy and he’s been fine so far, but he can definitely use a lot more goals. It all just took a little bit of oomph from Todd Mlen. And it’s like, yeah, what did he say to these guys when they were down 4 nothing? What would Derek Loland have said? You think about the guys that made an impact as well. EMTT Finny, he’s looking really good. I wonder how much of EMTT Finny being on the Detroit Red Wings roster is a result of Todd Mlen’s discretion up to management saying, “Yeah, no, that guy’s not going anywhere. That guy has to stay here. Oh, we only have room for one rookie. Well, too bad. That guy plus the hyphen guys, they can’t leave. How much of what is put onto the ice today and the roster decisions that were made heading into the season, which led to this team being assembled, was a result of Todd Mlen’s own personal preference. Like, you’re not going to tell me that the GM is specifically responsible for who goes up and down. There has to be some sort of coach input on that. It’s Todd Mlelen putting together a team from the assets that he has that plays his style and that he feels he can put on the ice and take the best out of. And now we’re starting to see it. Heck, I saw on the game score stat sheet card yesterday that Travis Hamick was actually one of the better players for Detroit yesterday. 7D strategy seems like it actually works, at least for the second half of the game. disregard the first 23 minutes or so. But this is what it feels like to have a good coach, doesn’t it? This is how it feels like when a team can be very confident in the coach that is in charge. And I think the glimmer of hope that we are seeing from Red Wings fans after yesterday’s game, it’s nothing like we’ve ever seen before. I don’t think Red Wings fans have felt this optimistic about their team in years. I get it. They were just on a losing streak a few games ago. But a win like this, this can change wonders for a player, a line, a team. If you enjoyed this video, feel free to hit the like button. 1. I was at the game and it was absolutely awful defensive play for 30 minutes. As soon as he ripped into his players they started playing better. Dont understand why you need to get yelled at and treated like a kid to play good hockey. We won but it was another ugly defensive game.

  2. I wasn't able to watch last night, but from what I heard, they spent half the game looking like crap and needed to be yelled at by McLellan. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy the boys came back and won, but I'm not feeling anything one way or the other about the team yet… and I won't until we have the little X next to the team name in the standings indicating we qualified for the playoffs, or the little E indicating we were eliminated. I love my team, but my expectations are pretty well tempered.

  3. A little nervous about this upcoming west coast road trip for the Wings. They haven’t looked good in any of their away games (they goalied TOR for their only win). If they get 5 out of 10 possible points that will be a success.

  4. Todd is a great coach, and I'm glad he's at the helm. I loved that he called a time out to give them the business. Lalonde NEVER called timeouts to try to stop the bleeding. However, the wings are a roller coaster right now, they're either substantially outplaying the other team or getting caved. They need to clean that up. Had they not had this comeback yesterday, we'd be having an ENTIRELY different conversation today- the high danger chances they're giving up are unacceptable.

Was glad to see 93 get a goal, he could have had a hatty yesterday if he could get a little puck luck. Debrincat's a DAWG though, always going 100%, love the never give up, never quit attitude he brings and is always mixing it up (and he does it at 5'8"– hell yes).
