Dylan Guenther’s Clutch Gene ELECTRIFIES Mammoth Fans | Is He the Next NHL Superstar?
They’re the hottest team in the Western Conference and now tied to top the NHL standings. Seven reasons why the Utah Mammoth are on fire. [Music] You are a Locked On Mammoth. Your daily podcast on the Utah Mammoth, part of the Locked On Network, your team every day. Hello everyone and welcome in once again. I’m veteran NHL voice Tom Callahan joined as always by longtime team analyst Robin Leano and together we’re the dynamic duo that brings you Locked on Mammoth each and every single weekday. Thanks for joining us and making us your first listen when it comes to the Utah Mammoth hockey team. Robin, seven in a row for the Utah M. Hottest team in the West tied for first in the NHL standings. We’re going to drop at least seven reasons, but I got seven ready to roll here. Talking about huge weekend, three and 0 to start this road trip. Can anyone slow them down in the Tusky era? It seems like no because Tom, this team just seems unstoppable. And and it’s crazy because like we’ll see moments right there. We’ll see moments in each of the last games that we saw where you and I can nitpick and we were like, “H, I didn’t like how that started. I didn’t like this period. I didn’t like that aspect.” But despite that, this team is still finding ways to get the win in the end. Robin, that is the point, and I’m glad you bring that up because that is the point we need to most clearly communicate to the listeners and viewers of this program and folks who might just be tuning in to find out what’s going on in Utah. This team did not play its best hockey tonight. I didn’t think it was a very good game, especially the first period. However, not only do they find those ways to win, they get the little things along the way that they didn’t get last year. And I’m talking about critical goals at important moments. I’m talking about big saves when they need it. I’m talking about staying out of the box. And tonight, Winnipeg pulled a Utah. They took a too many men. They ended up in the box late. I am so pleased the Mammoth are not the ones shooting themselves in the footnote. And they are just finding the ways. Yeah, they’re going to give up goals. Yeah, they’re going to take their naps still as they have. And they I mean I think both teams sleptw walk through the first period. It was not a very exciting period. But Robin, they’re they’re finding ways now. And that is what elevates your team again from out of the playoffs to end the playoffs, from contender to potentially a deep run playoff team. These little moments in games that over the course of an 82 game season all add up. They really do. And I’m going to bring up a term, Tom, that I’ve said earlier in the LA before we hit the weekend. I’ve said last all of last week because it’s something that even the players are saying and it’s a lot of it is Tom that this team is maturing and we’re seeing that happen live like we’re seeing them learn from their mistakes and that I think is a huge step forward that we have been asking this team to do so for so long. Yeah. Not not just in the Utah era, even going back before that, we’ve been asking for it. Robin, I got to let everybody know today’s episode brought to you by FanDuel. Download the FanDuel app now by visiting fanuel.com and win $300 in bonus bets if your first $5 bet wins. Robin, if you picked Utah tonight, you might have made yourself a little scratch because I I I felt like this was an overtime point kind of game for Utah. And I actually felt that way long into the third period, but then somehow they find a way to get that last goal that puts him over the hump. And that’s my first of these seven reasons, Robin, is what we’ve been talking about. It’s I mean, and that’s huge, right? Just so much to appreciate about that. Number two, I want to jump into for for out of my seven reasons here. They’re getting goalending now. they’re getting the right save at the right time. I mean, 90% of the time, look, there’s going to be a puck that goes in sometimes and you kind of roll your eyes or you’re a little disappointed, honestly. And Vanichek played tonight in Winnipeg and then, you know, V has played the bulk of the workload. I thought he started to look better and better and a little sharper compared to the start of the season. They’re getting the saves right now and I I can’t argue with that. That brings results. It does. Absolutely. And you know, I was I was curious to see how Vanichek would perform against, you know, against this Winnipeg team where, yeah, they’re, you know, you know, they’re known for their defense, but they still got some, you know, you know, pretty stout offensive players, pretty stout forwards on their team that could have easily done the runaround on on VC Bichek. But, uh, he didn’t he didn’t let that happen, right? And especially towards the end there. towards the end there was absolutely huge. Um, and you know, you talked about Tom overall and the players and the team being able to uh be clutch that continues with goalending as well. Robin, overall tonight, I talked about it not being what I felt was Utah’s best effort, but they still come out with the win. Statistically, it bears that out. They were under 500 on the faceoffs tonight. They were one for four on the power play. Winnipeg went one for one, but however, that is important. Only one power play, you know, that’s huge to mention right there because Winnipeg put themselves in the box more often. So, I like the discipline. Blocks are about the same. Giveaways were pretty high, 20 for Utah, but also 16 for Winnipeg. And not a lot of takeaways. Statistically, again, I thought Utah could have done a better job, but and that power play where they got scored on, that was a long shift. They failed to get a clear. I mean, Sergeev had zero gas in the tank. He was just kind of out there standing there. And, you know, unfortunately, I’m pretty sure he screened Vanichek on that goal. But other than that, this is this is a really hard game to quibble with because somehow on their not so good a night, somehow facing the best regular season goalender in the NHL and the best defensive team the last two years in the NHL, Robin, they got to three goals. They made it happen. Mhm. And you know what’s interesting at Tom is one of the things that um we’ve been saying is sometimes like we’ve been asking for a couple of different things. One is greasy goals, but two greasy wins, right? Like and again we love to see the great wins, right? We love to see, you know, like like against Minnesota when that was like, you know, for a while that was like, you know, they were all cylinders firing. Another six goal game there against Colorado that, you know, it looked like they put on a really good effort on that one. Um, I would I would chalk this game as a greasy win because again, as you said, it wasn’t perfect. Uh there was a lot of things that we really thought we could nitpick and say, “Yeah, they could have done this better. They could have done that better.” But they still got the win in the end. Um and to me, Tom, here’s something that I just want to point out. Each of the last four wins, the Avalanche, the Blues, the Wild, the Jets, you know what they all have in common? Divisional rivals who were in the Stanley Cup playoffs last year. Yes. Yes. And I want to talk about four-point games. And I’ll explain that term if you every day. I know you guys know what the four-point game is for the new folks. I will I’m going to talk about the importance of the four-point games, but I’ll also explain what I mean by that in case you don’t know. U but I want to go to reason number three first. And Robin, this is going to give us uh your first chance to get your nugs in. Nugs. Uh Robin’s nugs. We we need a graphic for that. So reason number three is the pickup line. And and if you missed the last show why I’ve anointed them the pickup line, it’s because they always score. So I mean a lot of folks are calling them the young guns line, but I’ve moved to the pickup line. So Gunther Purka Robin, would you please share the magic? Oh yeah, absolutely. Here is the here is that first of the Nuggets with with points on the eventual game-winning goal. Dylan Gunther, Logan Kulie, and JJ Poka have all extended their respective point streaks, including Gunther, by the way, who has points in all of six of Utah’s road contests this season with three goals and six assists. Gunther’s on a fivegame heater. So, when you’re looking at seven in a row and then he’s had points in every single road game, that’s huge. And don’t underestimate that, Robin. That’s big because there are players who show up at home, they get two goals and an assist and they’re happy and blah blah blah, but then they just disappear on the road and you never see these guys away from home. Gunther is just really picking it up away from home. And you know, that’s the mark of a good hockey player and what what really could carry a hockey team into the playoffs. And I I know we’re still early in the season, but if that continues, if they stay hot like that, what’s going to slow them down? We haven’t seen anything that can slow them down yet. It took them a while to wake up. And Tom, I’ve already said it before. I do firmly believe that the game against the Sharks was what they needed to wake up. I I’ve said it before. I’ll say it again. I’ll say it as many times as I as I need to. That was the necessary game to get the team to wake up to where they are now. And take a look. They are not slowing down. All right, I told you we’re going to give you seven reasons. So, we’re going to get to number four. We’re going to talk about four-point games. Also, I want to take a look at the bigger picture of what beating the Jets actually means right now for this Utah team. Not just the win streak, but beating the Jets. And I want to say, look, I know a lot of you who watch are subscribed, but plenty of you aren’t. And if you wouldn’t mind taking a moment right now, it doesn’t cost you anything. Please go ahead and click that subscribe button. If you’re on YouTube, hit the bell. you’ll get the notifications when we drop a new show. And of course, you can find us anywhere you get your podcast. All right, we’re going to talk more about this seven game heater for your NHL leading Utah Mammoth. Seven in a row for the Utah Mammoth, including Robin. So this stretch, this four-game road trip they’re on now is actually a bigger picture. Eight of nine on the road. So to start with three wins, I said two one and one made me happy. You actually did say three and one. They managed to win a huge game in Winnipeg on Sunday. A second half of a back-to- back with short but still international travel. Uh it really wasn’t too bad. They did get in at a reasonable hour. I heard Matt McConnell saying to get into I mean it helped because that Minnesota game was early. Yeah. Yeah. So, so they got in at a decent hour, but Robin, you’re still playing two games in two days against two tough opponents. And again, Winnipeg has been the best defensive team in the NHL for the last two years. They still managed to get to three goals on Winnipeg who are very, very stingy and they did it not playing their best game. So reason number four that I want to talk about here is and just including the importance of beating this Winnipeg Jets team is right now the Mammoth are finding those ways to win the games but they’re beating those key opponents and setting a tone and I believe Robin that we have seen a sea change in the attitude in the expectations and in the mental mindset of this hockey team. I think Robin, this is the transition into from wanting to win to believing they’re going to win. You know, it makes me think, Tom, when they went back to when we look back on media day and they talk to these players and they talk to the coaches and the theme is the same among the question is what they believe this season was about. They said last year was about hope, right? Towards the especially towards the end there, right? They were hopeful, right? They they were like, you know, we’re we still know where we are. We know our place, but we’re still riding strong and I think we have a maybe a chance, but let’s, you know, let’s stay hopeful. But this season is about confidence where they know that this team is that much better that they can get these important wins against these important against these tougher opponents against these divisional opponents really make a name for themselves at this point. Absolutely. And they’re doing it, Robin. And one of the ways they’re doing it is reason number five, discipline. This is huge for us to talk about because among the things you and I just begged for was please stop with the dumb penalties that always seem to occur at the wrong time and put him behind the eight-ball. And like I said earlier, Utah actually watched Winnipeg do that to itself late in the third period. Yeah, that was nice to see. Somebody else did it. Not only that, but uh also a delay of game penalty, too. Like Right. Right. Those are those are bad mistakes. And here’s and here’s the thing, Tom. It’s interesting you bring that up because like I think because of some of the mistakes early on, like a little bit earlier in the season, Utah is still like towards the higher end of of uh penalty minutes for a team. Uh but it’s but they fix but but they’re hunkering that down. They’re tightening it up. And we don’t we’re not seeing that. As you said, they were on the penalty kill once against Winnipeg. Just once. And of course, Winnipeg scored. That’s another reason why you don’t want to give the Jets too many chances. No, of course. Yeah. And that and that I mean that tells you that how good of a team Winnipeg is, right? But it also tells you how how much smarter the Utah team has gotten. Yes. And that’s that’s so important because Robin, I feel like last year they could have won more games. They really could have. They had it if they’d have just been a little bit more disciplined, a little bit more cautious, a little bit more alert and aware situationally. But isn’t this all part of what is number six? Growth and maturity. Isn’t it all part of that? That’s what I said earlier, right? It is all about this team just being more mature. and you’re seeing it in the way that uh the leadership group especially carries themselves. But not only that is you take a look at, you know, the young guns line, the pickup line, whatever you want to call them. Let’s call we we could call them. I know we’ll call them the pickup line on this show. Might as well. Let’s just go full throttle, full into let’s just call them the pickup line at this point because yes, you’re right. They always score. Um but it’s interesting, right? Because you know the reason why everyone called them young guns because well they’re very young. These are the you know they’re still kids but I think being around you know these some some of the veterans being around a good leadership group they are maturing as well and we’re seeing that happen live. Let’s not underestimate the value of having brought in and this year they brought in two more Stanley Cup winners in Vanichek and Schmidt and everybody because you look at the players that they have that are Stanley Cup winners and they’re role players, right? They’re not the dynamic number one forward like Keller hasn’t won a Stanley Cup. hasn’t won a Stanley Cup, but they are surrounded by guys who have. And the Oolie Madas of the world who are out there working hard and the Nate Schmidts who are out there trying to show them this is how you do it. You got to bust your hump and you’ve got to bring it every single day. The season’s a grind. Yes, you’re going to have to manage yourself over 82 games plus playoffs, but this is the kind of experience that is really invaluable to these younger players. And it it really is. And I think that’s why that’s why I think it like I scratched my head at a couple of questions that we had a while back ago of especially when it was the signing of Nate Schmidt when people were upset. is like you’re you’re taking away the ability for a young guy to to get a roster spot. That’s not it. You’re allowing those guys to a develop, but also b bringing in a guy like Nate Schmidt is being able to add that level of maturity, add that level of insight to the team, to that core so they can understand this is what it takes to win a hockey game. Not just one hockey game, but a season of hockey games. Robin, I had a couple of candidates for reason number seven. Um, one is not 7D. So, um, I was going to put that in there. Uh, also, seven could have been Tusky. We’re in our Tusky era. Tusky era. This is what we’re going to call it now. We’re in our Tusky era. So, feeling Tusky. We’re in our Tusky era. Um, but so all of that, yes, all of that can be kind of ever since like, you know, you know, seven and0 since uh uh since Woolly Bully was announced as the win song. Yeah. Yeah, there’s that. I mean, there’s a lot of coincidences here. Uh, even Spicy Tuna coming out of the lineup tonight, which I understand on a backtoback. Sure, I’m disappointed, but I understand why you put Yamamoto in there. And he and Carone score a goal. Yes. I mean, and the point is you bring him in the lineup to add that level of, you know, add that level of energy, but even if he’s out one game, your hope is that doesn’t change. But, but what we notice is if he’s out long term, if he’s been on the bench for, you know, six, seven, eight games at a time, then we’re starting to see a little bit of, you know, see see a little bit of change. That’s what we saw last year, right? He was out for a decent amount of time and then he got then Spicy Tuna got brought back in and they played better. Um, and I mean, take a look at at this at this streak that they got going. Spicy tuna came in the second game of that streak in the game against the Sharks, but it’s still it still mattered all that much. So, what I’m going to do, Robin, is I’m going to tell you what number seven is for my seven reasons for seven in a row next. And today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time. Hockey season is officially here and nothing beats being in the arena for those opening games. But let’s be real, getting tickets can be a total headache between waiting in cues, surprise fees, and prices that jump right before checkout. The first time I actually used it was for a Stanley Cup playoff game in which I was trying to look find the best value I could, but I also wanted to be able to get a good view of the seats. So, we looked into the app, I saw the seats, and I saw the price, and I was curious. Okay, is that the final price? And it said right next to it, allin, which meant that was the all-in price. That’s all I had to pay for the tickets. So, no hidden fees. I was able to know exactly what my seat would look like before I even bought the tickets. And it just made it so much worth it. Rob Robin, take take a breather. Take a breather. You got time. You got I got this. So, um yeah, back on locked on Mammoth. I’m here. Let’s see if Robin survives. Robin is so emotional over seven in a row for the Utah Mammoth. This is huge. So, they are the hottest team in the Western Conference. They’re now tied to top the NHL standings. They just beat the stingiest defensive team in the NHL on a backto back with travel on the road. So reason number seven for me and all of this is leadership. Not only and I I hinted at it before and I talked about what bringing in those Stanley Cup winners means, but the leadership now, the core, the group that is evolving who wear the letters on the sweaters and it starts with Clayton Keller and the leadership of Clayton Keller for this team. Even when Keller doesn’t find the score sheet or have a direct impact on the game, it all starts right there with number nine. It It really does though. I mean, this uh looks like it’s not going to stop. Tom Clayton Keller is unbelievable hockey player. Let’s, you know, let’s let’s start with that. As a captain, it just makes him even all that all that more valuable. you and I going into the season last year, not this preseason, but the last season, right, when we’re talking about looking at who could be the first captain of this team, we debated between two players, Clayton Keller, Lawson, and Krauss, because they have two different leadership styles. But I think we agreed that Clayton Keller would have been the better person. And what we’re seeing is that level of growth as a captain, as a hockey player. Um, not only did he again have a 90 point season last year, but he’s continuing to show that growth this year. And it just means all that much for not only himself, but for the entire hockey team. Think about Clayton Keller’s last calendar year. Okay. going so stretching back basically to the start of last NHL season was a hopeful for team USA for four nations but really got snubbed. It was a snub. Let’s call it what it was. It was somehow didn’t make that team and I don’t know how. Then goes to the World Championships and as the captain of team USA leads that team to a victory for the first time in what was it Robin? How many years? since 19 I want to say 36 was the last 1933 33 was the last time they had won. So Keller has that experience clearly with an eye towards the Olympics coming up this winter and felt the need to really show up on a world stage and did to prove himself just that little bit more after a 90 point and a very quiet somehow 90 point NHL season. Now you have that off season of motivation of thinking about what your next step is, what you want, not only for yourself as a professional, but for your team. And I really believe this is the most driven, most motivated version you are going to see of Clayton Keller. And we’re getting his best right now. Oh, absolutely. And let me take let’s take a we rewind for a sec actually to the game against Minnesota, right? Um, if I’m not mistaken, Bill Garin, who is the G general manager of the Minnesota Wild, is said to be the general manager or is the general manager of team USA for the Olympics. And who has big g who had a big game in in that game? Not only Clayton Keller, but also Logan Culie, who has Olympic aspirations. Koulie’s playing his way into the conversation. I thought he should have been in the four nations conversation last year and the fact that neither he nor Keller was was criminal. But so Robin, I wanted to talk real quick about four-point games and then I’ve got my own nugs to drop here at the end. Okay, so really quick, a four-point game. What does that mean? Robin said, “Hey, what did the last four wins all have in common against division opponents who made the playoffs last year?” Look, the points are still two points for a win in October, just like they are in March and April. But when you play a division opponent, here’s why not going to overtime matters. You win the two points in regulation, which is the most important type of win, but also by not going past regulation, you deny Winnipeg, Minnesota, St. Louis the chance to add a point to their total. So, at the end of the day, I’ll use some round numbers. If let’s just say St. Louis and Utah played 10 times in a season. Okay. Mhm. Each team has a possible total of 20 points. If all of those games end in regulation, then you might see something like Utah finishes with 14 points and then there’s only six regulation points left. So St. Louis would have six. However, when those games go past regulation, even if Utah wins, every time you go past that six becomes a seven, an eight, a nine, a 10. That’s why it’s so important. That’s why they’re called four-point games when you win them in regulation. and Robin. That’s going to mean less points for all those teams we just mentioned in the division standings. And guess what? Utah sits at top not only the Central, not only the West, but they are tied for first in the NHL right now. They are tied for first. And isn’t that something? That’s wild. It’s incredible. And it’s really one of the best starts we could have asked for. I said, “Hey guys, go seven and four.” They said, “Well, I’ll tell you what. How about eight and two and we’ll go from there.” And and Robin, they they actually lost a game they should have won. I thought they should have beat Chicago. Yeah. I mean, so this is kind of crazy to me. And they’re really picking it up. Um I want to throw this nug at you though before I forget because I will forget. Okay. So So Dylan Gunther scoring the game winner. That’s his fourth already of the season. It’s I love it. That is tied for the league lead. Love it. Tied for the league league with Seth Jarvis and Carolina. If you go back to the beginning of last season, he has Carolina’s a hot team as well. So Carolina is a hot team. You go back to the beginning of last season, he has 13 game-winning goals. So not only does he score, he scores big time goals. And that is tied for the tops in the NHL with Mark Shley of Winnipeg. Gunther is a big time, big money, shine that spotlight right in my eyes performer. He loves it. He owns it. And you know what? Those guys win championships. A true goal scorer. And we love it, right? But not only that, not just a true goal scorer. I used the term earlier and I’m going to use it again for this specific thing to talk about Dylan Gunther. Dylan Gunther is clutch. He finds ways not not just to get goals. I mean, of course, he gets the goals, but getting goals in crucial parts of a hockey game. And that I mean that’s everything, isn’t it? I mean, that’s that’s it. That big goals, big moments, the big players score those. And are we putting him in the same breath yet as I don’t know, Sydney Crosby? Well, no. We’re not there yet. But he’s he’s young and he’s building. And when his moments come around to start to shine and that is the other thing, Robin, that you need a playoff series to show. Once you’re in the playoffs, it is completely different. What is this team going to look like? How are these lines and these players going to perform? What’s the D going to look like? How do the goalies fare? These are all things we have to find out yet. Yeah, we ab we absolutely will. But so far it’s just it’s we’re in for a ride. Yes, we’re just here for the ride and it’s amazing. Yes, it’s a great start. It by no means guarantees you a playoff spot, but you know what? It makes it a lot easier to get in when after 10 games you’re sitting at 8 and two than if you’re sitting at two and eight. So, you know, sing when you’re winning a little bit here. Let’s enjoy it. Absolutely. We’re enjoying the ride. Oh, 100%. Right. And that’s what we try to do here, right? We’re, you know, we like we’ll enjoy the ride. We’ll be critical when we have to, right? Yes. Well, yeah, you can count on me for that. Yeah. As as some people have noted. Yeah. Tom does not mind being critical. Tom nitpicks more than I do. I try. I like I I always look I I look as much on the bright side of things as I can, but I’m critical at the right moments. Yes. Robin is much more likely to be wearing the rosecolored glasses than me. But that’s okay because that’s that’s the yin and the yang yang yang to the to the show. So if we agreed all the time, it’d be a very very boring show, wouldn’t it? Yes. All right, Robin. Uh we always tell folks they can drop comments and let us know on the YouTube side, but if they are listening to the audio version, perhaps through your personal assistant at home or wherever you get your podcasts, where can they find us? I think it would be so great if you did a show exclusively aboutl.Sergachev, And how valuable he is to the team
JJ Peterka. Savage assist!
I agree … it was JJ peterka who rushed beat his man to the puck. Took the hit and set up the final goal. Great effort
I thought they played well for a back-to-back game. From my perspective it seemed like a focus issue rather than an energy issue. Plenty of players were flying down the ice, but they weren't as connected as they have been. Fortunately, Vanacek was rested and ready for the challenge in net. Also, we caught Winnipeg sleeping on that Sergachev goal. My biggest criticism is the Johansson goal because we simply gave Winnipeg too much time and space in our own end. We had tired skaters who looked like mannequins advertising hockey jerseys.
