Red Wings score 6 UNANSWERED in comeback win over Blues | Alex DeBrincat finally finds twine
Today on lockdown Red Wings, Detroit scores six unanswered goals to erase a four- nothing deficit and defeat the St. Louis Blues. You’re Locked on Red Wings, your daily podcast on the Detroit Red Wings, part of the Locked On Network, your team every day. Welcome back to the Lockdown Red Wings podcast. We are your hosts, Brian Fiser and Scotty Bentley, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. And you can listen to us wherever you get your podcasts. Scotty, that was a bizarre hockey game. I I tweeted out a couple days ago that there are two Detroit Red Wings teams. There’s one Detroit Red Wings team that will be on every puck, be the win the race, win the 50/50 battles, and they’ll suffocate you at five on five. And then there’s the Red Wings that are chasing the play, missing assignments, and never getting shots on net. And we got both of those teams in one hockey game. Down four nothing. Mlen calls a timeout. Then they score six unanswered to win six to four. A win. And I’m sure they’re not happy about I’m sure they’re happy to get the win, but I’m sure they’re not happy about how the way they got the win. Um, but yeah, there’s going to be a lot to talk about in this because it was basically two two games in one. Yeah. You know, I I think and I I’ll probably reference this again at the end of the show, but my favorite thing to come out of this game was a Mlen quote in the postgame media availability where he said, “We cannot pick and choose when we want to play our brand of hockey.” like we we can’t just choose and and you know turn it on and off and and just decide whenever we want to like okay I guess we’ll start playing you know our to our identity right now because we’re losing or right now because whatever and and we like this team is at a position and and at a a talent level I guess I’ll call it where they need to continue and they need it sounds so like captain obvious but they they need to play their style of hockey that wins then games for as close to 60 as they can. And uh this was kind of the the epitome of that, right? Like you uh and really the last three games have been, you know, they they they aren’t playing their brand of hockey. They drop two games. They they look a lot uh I don’t know if worse is too like aggressive, but they they certainly don’t look as good as they did in in in the fiveame winning streak. They drop two games and then they turn around in this game. To your point, you see the same old same old in the first half and then pretty much right at halftime, like right at 10 minutes in the second period, you see them kind of flip the uh the script there a little bit and start playing a lot like they did during that fivegame win streak and they come back and win. So yeah, I I completely agree with you and I think like I said my my favorite thing to come out of this game was that Mlelen quote about just, you know, trying to emulate that that strategy and style throughout 60 instead of picking and choosing when they feel like it. Yeah. And we’ll pick and choose specific points in this game that we want to talk about as well. So, uh, before we get to any of that, transition right there. That’s that’s why they pay him the big bucks. Yes, sir. I got to let you guys know today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Okay, Scotty, when it comes to difference makers in a game in which they played the worst brand of hockey that they know and the best brand of hockey that they know, it was literally the first half of this game was New York Islanders and the second half of this game was Tampa Bay Lightning. It was tail of two halves. What do you have as a difference maker in this one? Yeah. So, there’s a lot of different kind of ways you can go here. I feel like um there’s certainly player performances that I think we will talk about and point out. I also think that there is um you know like lines or groups or or units that you certainly could point out. For me, I I feel like it has to be I guess has to be might be strong. I I feel like it’s it’s something that happened in the second period no matter what you pick, right? Like the difference in this game has to almost have occurred in that second period when they were down four nothing and then turned it around. I I think for me it was the two goals in what 27 seconds you told me before we hit record. like it was within 30 seconds of each other. You you get the the backtoback goals from was that Finny and Confer. Um it was I I feel like that was the moment you know the first goal happens and you’re kind of like all right whatever like great not garbage time because it’s still you know the second period but you’re like okay cool like whatever they’re still down a ton. the second goal happens and you’re like, okay, like that at least, you know, two goal lead, like that you at least have something to play for here the rest of the way. But then the the third goal happening so quickly after the second one, I think really kind of put not only the roster, but the fan base and and those watching kind of the mindset of like, okay, like this is, you know, they actually have a chance to do something here the rest of this game. only the second period and they’ve gone from down four goals to down one. And uh so I I think that for me the the turnaround I guess you could even be more specific and just say the third goal, right? because it happened so quickly after the second one was really the difference maker in this one and made this a okay whatever like these goals are are are cute and will look good and we’ll talk about them and as far as positives but like they’re not going to win till like oh like they actually have a chance to you know at least get a point out of this. Yeah, I mean that’s like you said it’s going to be one of those moments in the second period and that that’s a good one too because as you put it Finny scores that goal. Kates’s 4-2. You’ve made it a respectable game. You’ve at least matched their goal count for the period. You’ve made it possible in the third period to make a comeback. Then 27 seconds later, Travis Hamick, first point as a Detroit Red Wing, by the way. Congratulations, Travis Hamick in the second game. Uh just fires a puck at the net and Confer is able to get his stick on it and kind of flutters it over Bennington. And then like that, it’s a one-goal game. Now, what was momentum building is momentum 100% in your direction cuz now you’re down a goal with 20 minutes left. and this team has its confidence back. That’s a really good difference maker. Um, you could easily also choose when John Gibson stopped the Snugarude breakaway that happened a little bit earlier. After that breakaway, the team began to push a little bit. Uh, you could say it was Jonathan Baragan’s first goal because analytically, if you look at the the chart of shot attempts for and against, after Baragren scored that power play goal, then all of a sudden it was an upward trend for the Red Wings in shot attempts. They’re like, “Okay, we broke the seal. We can get through.” I personally am going to go with just the Todd Mlullen timeout. And I know that it didn’t I know that it didn’t begin right then and there, but it was after Tom McClullen called a timeout after the fourth goal and just really tore them a new one that the team began to kind of find their groove. They at first were just like, “Okay, let’s go out there and just play hard.” And they were playing hard, they were getting the pucks, they were getting more chances, but they were still when St. Louis would escape that pressure then give up huge opportunities back the other way. It’s kind of like a it was a sequence of several difference makers that made this possible. It’s one of those games where like you said in the second period you could choose like I’m going to go with the first the first little dot right the first bullet point. Tom McClullen calls a timeout rips the team a new one for like you put it or he put it I guess in the post game is picking and choosing when to play their game. Then you had the John Gibson breakaway save and Snugaroo that would have made it 5 nothing. Then you had Barren’s power play goal. at that point they started to play a little bit more give more opportunities then you had backto-back goals. So those are all good difference makers because they all contributed to the comeback as a whole. Um there’s other you could even go into the third period and say Alex de Brinket too who I’m sure we’ll talk about in segment two finally got his first goal. Um so why don’t we actually just if you’re do you have anything to add about No, I I I agree with you. I mean, that was optically that was very pleasing. Uh, like that’s I feel like that’s how the entire fan base felt. They were like, “Oh my goodness, what are you guys doing?” Like, we have seen we have seen you go on a fivegame winning streak against, you know, five playoff teams. Like, what is happening? And it it was so frustrating. And it was going to be three losses in a row after five wins in a row. And everyone was pissed off. And so, I think that he just emulated, you know, those frustrations. and uh and directed them toward the players and and they clearly responded. And that’s the second time that he’s called them out kind of with no shame and and no covering it up and and and the players have responded already this season and we’re, you know, not even 10 games in. So, I don’t know if that’s good or bad, but it’s good that they’re responding at least, right? Uh Scotty, let’s head to a quick break and then we’ll move into our notable performers. Scotty, I don’t think there’s a better notable performer to begin with other than Alex the Brinket just because his goal sealed the comeback and a guy you can’t imagine deserved it more than him. I am I what a weight off of everyone’s shoulders and I think I mean fairly obviously no more so than him. He had so many shot attempts in this game as well. like he was just like I am whether it it it kills me. I am going to put this puck in the back of the net. Like he was doing everything in his power to try to get shots on net and and find a goal and he finally did and you’re hoping that that can just kind of break the seal a little bit and uh the floodgates open metaphorically there. So hopefully that is the case. But yes, I I think that this was a game in it’s one that you watch and go, “Okay, one goal, great.” But because of just the volume of scoring opportunities he took upon himself, you almost kind of watch that and you’re just like, okay, the hope is that he can just continue to play that aggressive like I’m going to get my shots off, you know, style and uh and hopefully, you know, more than just one goal after like six attempts uh can get it. But yeah, like I I I love the aggressiveness. I love the the determination, I guess I’ll say, to get shots on net and and he certainly he he took that personally, if you will. And uh and certainly finally found a goal, right? This was an FU game from Alex De Brink. He was just throwing everything in. And it wasn’t even like they were bad opportunities. Like he had great a scoring chances that again in this game weren’t going his way. You had a blocker save by Colton Ellis against Buffalo. You had a stick save uh against the Islanders. And then you in this game he hits two crossbarss in the same period. Yeah. It’s just what is going it’s they had an analyst on the analyst is like yeah I mean analytically speaking he should have like four goals. I mean I’m I’m that’s not what he said but I’m exaggerating. Like the analyst said that he he’s due like he’s way overdue for analyst. This is not what he said but not what he said. I exaggerated, but he I he he did say that he was due and he it’s very clear he was due after everything that was happening. And to him for him to finally get rewarded with a a game-tying goal in the third period in which the Red Wings had several opportunities to tie it, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Larkin missed on a breakaway. Larkin missed the net a couple times in this game. to Brinket finally coming through and you need to Brink it to be one of your top scorers because eventually Dylan Larkin’s not going to be redot anymore eventually you know you know Patrick Kane’s still out Raven’s not 100% like you need to bring it to be your your best scorer and so for him to finally come through and get that he had 11 shot attempts in this hockey game six total shots that got on that and that doesn’t count the two crossbarss he hit so he was for him to cut across and then shoot back against the grain like he kind of always does one of his signature moves moves is the cut across like that and then find the back of the net. Like that was another you talk about differencemaker moments. I kind of teased that at the end of seg segment one but that was one of those moments where you’re like okay yeah this is officially the Red Wings game. It’s a tie game but it feels like the Wings are up two now because they have just been pouring the pressure on and then 37 right obviously a huge ice tilt moment there. I mean that again I mean everything we kind of talked about in the first segment in terms of difference makers and and what led to that. Yeah, Debrink’s obviously a great one. I I think Edmonson’s probably the next logical conversation. A guy that ends this game with two goals, had a decent amount of shots. You know, we were talking about it before we hit record and I said that he had a much improved game from when, you know, we talked about how poor of a game he had two games ago. I think he took a step and you had made a great point which is like yeah, you know, in the second half of the game and and I I feel like that is fair, but it’s also like you could say that about just about anybody that was in this game like took another bad penalty in the first period. So, right, they were down four nothing. Like nobody was really lighting it up there. But I I do think that you’re right and and the biggest point to that is just the another penalty, man. like I this is just it’s this flurry of of penalties and and a handful of them not not very timely. I guess I’ll say uh like at really inopportune times in games is just very frustrating and hopefully something that he can work on and grow out of. But um to end this game with the two goals and he had five block shots in this game which comfortably led the team. Uh the only other person that even had three was Aljo. So um really I I think again in that second half of the game aside from just scoring goals and and kind of you know putting the the game sealer in the back of the net obviously late. um just kind of turning it around and playing that smart but physical style of hockey that is what makes him so good when he’s playing that way. Right. And I think part of it too is that they they’ve broke up the defensive pairs. Obviously they played 11 and seven today which is something we should talk about when we get a moment. Uh because that is notable considering the Red Wings carry right now. They only have 13 with Kane injured but they went with 11 and seven. uh they were able to cycle through the pairs and try different things which I think with the limited time between games that the Red Wings have because of the Olympic break compressing the right schedule may have been the design like we’re going to mix and match and see what defensive pairs work and by the second half of the game it was Cider and Edmonson together full time which is what we all dream of and they had broken up him and Sandine Pelica and that’s when also he began to play better but again you know in the goal with neighbors. Uh the that made it four- nothing. It was a defensive breakdown. Edinson was somehow behind the play. Jon Jonathan Bergen had done a good job come back and helped take the the initial puck carrier away. And then you had JVR and Confer late backing which allowed neighbors to come down the middle wide open. The same thing that happened the other day against the Islanders. Just players missing assignments. And I’m getting a little off topic here because we’re talking about Evson. U but Evson takes that penalty and it was the second period, not the first period. But that does lead to the uh Buchavic goal against that really just nasty tip from the middle the middle position on the power play for the Blues. If he doesn’t take that penalty, they don’t get scored on. So, he’s we obviously know how good Edmonson can be, but it seems like he’s fighting it a little bit right now. Uh something’s just and he didn’t have a training camp and that’s definitely worth noting, too. But we are now nine games into the season, right? like it’s not as if he hasn’t had time to get his legs back underneath him. So, he’ll play better. He’ll get better. But, it was a rough stretch for him. And if he didn’t come back and play a really good game in the second half, like I was thinking he might get benched kind of like Michael Rasmusen did. And with that being said, why don’t we talk about the 11 and seven, Scotty, because Well, not only do you have that, but you mentioned it before we hit record, too. MBN played like like five shifts in this game, too. Like it’s just like like they just went out and they’re like, “Yeah, you know, not only are we going to go 11 and seven and and make some personnel changes in terms of just who’s dressing and who’s not, we’re also then MBN played Yeah, he had nine shifts. The the next lowest on the team was JVR at 14 and everybody else is, you know, 17 and higher. So, like you have you have two guys who literally Mlen was just like, “You know what? Uh, I think we’re probably better if you guys uh grab some pine here for a little bit.” And the comeback happened. So, that’s tough to argue as well. Well, and so the the Michael Rasm scratch and Sodblama was scratched as well, but that’s not as, you know, as surprising. the Michael Rasmus scratch. I mean, that’s a huge like uh message you’re trying to tell the team and this individual player because Michael Rasmus has been a staple in this lineup for better or for worse for four or five years. Like he’s been here, he’s played in every position, but the last year and a half since around the time he signed his extension, he has been I feel less and less impactful. And we’ve talked about it these first eight games he has been either invisible on the ice or straight up, you know, having negative impact. Trying to find a nice way of saying it. He’s had negative impact with the Detroit Red Wings. Either missing on grade opportunities or missing assignments or turning the puck over. So, it was a well-deserved scratch and I’m sure he knows that he needs to play better. He knows what he needs to be doing because at his best, he’s a, you know, a big body on the bottom six and they need that. And it’s just he’s going to find very quickly himself in a whole or Gustoson situation if he does not start playing up to his what he can up to his potential because there are a couple Danielson’s back playing with Grand Rapids. He had two assists in his first game back. Mer’s off to a hot start. There are guys who were ready to come supplant somebody on this roster. So he’s hopefully he can figure it out because you know obviously I’m not ad I’m not blind to Michael Rasmusen’s play. I know a lot of people think that because I’m a Michael Rasperson defender because he had that really hot stretch where he’s half point per game before he got hurt a couple years ago that I won’t I’m not critical enough on him. No, I see it guys. It’s it’s pretty obvious. But I do hope that he can, you know, be a impactful member of the bottom six, but that’s on him. That’s on No, I think that point you brought up at the end there is probably the the best one. Uh not not to rank, you know, the quality of your points. They’re all fantastic and beautiful, but I I think that I think that um you know, this is the blessing of organizational depth being the best it’s been in a while, right? Is you can look at some of these players and it’s not just like, okay, like this guy’s not doing a whole lot, but like what else is he going to do? Haha. Like it now it’s it’s okay. If if you’re not performing up to the standards or up to snuff, then there are other guys that are chomping at the bit to get that opportunity from the AHL. And I mean, you you talk about filling a bottom four role. There might not be anyone hotter in the entire organization at the moment than Carter Maer, who got off to a fantastic start this year. And um I I feel like he’s probably first call up if a wing goes down for a long period of time anyways. So, you know, and then like Danielson obviously back from uh from the injured list this weekend. Like there is just so injured reserve, whatever. I every sport calls it something different. I can’t even keep track anymore. I just call it all the injured list at this point. Um but yeah, like you you have those guys that you’re willing to to sub out, if you will, uh right with anybody who who maybe isn’t performing up to the standard. So, um it’s it’s it’s good pressure to have, but it certainly does put pressure on some of the guys in the bottom six and bottom four roles. Well, and that doesn’t even like there’s more than just prospects, right? There’s a handful of vets down there who would love to get a crack back at the lineup and like John Leonard, Austin Watson, like there’s a lot of guys who are ready and willing to take your spot on the roster. All right, Scotty, let’s head to a quick break when we return. Uh you mentioned NBN’s limited shift. I really hadn’t commented on that. I want to talk about that. Uh, and then we’ll clean up whatever we got left for this game. So stay tuned to segment three of Lockdown Red Wings. I don’t know why I was messing with my camera settings and all of a sudden it just like threw me up on the screen uh from backstage. So, I just like joined you and was rattled and then I kicked myself off screen there in the middle of your read. So, no. I’m on a different tab when I’m doing the the ad. So, I have no idea. You could be flipping me off. You could be making faces. I would have no idea. I’ll I’ll try that. I’ll try that. All right. There you go. Uh Scotty, MBN, you mentioned another one of those guys they wrote essentially played with 10 forwards for over 50 minutes of this hockey game because MBN only got 6 minutes and 37 seconds of ice time, nine total shifts. It’s feeling like we are building towards MBN getting some AHL time. I mean, it kind of feeds back into that conversation we were just having about youth being ready to supplant him in this organization and MBN just because he gets sent down to Grand Rapids as if he’s not ready for the NHL yet because he’s just speedwise he’s and decision-m like the speed of decision-m and the speed of his feet at times feel like it’s just not up the pace with the NHL. But that doesn’t mean like he’s a bust or anything. He was just drafted last year. The fact that he made this roster to begin with is a huge win for where he was taken, but it’s just feeling like based on what we’re seeing with our eyes and what we’re seeing from the coach’s decision-m, he may may need time to ferment down there in Grand Rapids for a little bit longer because it’s just not coming as easily for him as it has for Finny or even ASP for that matter. Yeah. And this was I mean, you know, the the surprise of the season already is that all three of these guys made the team out of camp. Like it’s it’s not really shocking that one of those three, you know, in the first couple of weeks of the season is maybe not um playing on par with, you know, expectations or whatnot. And yeah, this means like nothing in terms of his long-term development. He’ll he’ll be fine. like this is uh we we’ve seen flashes in the regular season early. Uh we saw a lot of flashes in the preseason obviously about kind of what he looks like in the brand of hockey that he can play on this team. Like there there is so much to like in NBN’s game. The fact that he may and like we’re even talking about a hypothetical right now like he you know he’s still on the team like right uh you know at the time of this recording at least. So, um I I mean we’ll like we’ll see. But I I think it is important to remember how young he is, how, you know, inexperienced he still is. Literally just drafted two drafts ago now. Like he will he he will be fine and he will be back and he will be a lot better than what he was or what he has been so far. It’s just about I mean it really is like pace and that’s the biggest thing that everybody talks about you know the biggest difference between you know the AHL or playing overseas or whatever just the jump to the NHL is is the pace is just so ridiculous in the National Hockey League at this point in uh NHL history right like this era is just so fast and that is the biggest adjustment that people have to make and you know when he’s able to set up top and when he’s able to to play defense like you still see the flashes but um yeah there’s just still uh getting getting adjusted to the speed is just clearly something that he still needs. So maybe that happens at the NHL level. Maybe he gets sent down. I don’t know. I’m not really like too terribly worried about like his future though. Going from one rookie to another. Scotty EMTT Finny scored again in this hockey game. We already mentioned it before but that’s his fourth goal in the season. Fourth goal in three games. his scoring touch has kind of come alive here in the last couple games. I haven’t checked, but I know prior to the game he was tied with Matthew Schaefer in rookie points. I imagine he’s still one or two in that regard as he just continues to go to the hard areas and get rewarded. I mean, that’s two games in a row where he’s just gone to the slot and the puck’s gotten to him and he’s buried it. And it’s like, oh, no wonder when you go to the net, you sometimes get rewarded with a puck on your stick. It’s just not even get pucks deep, but like it feels like a lot of the times, and I could be projecting here, right? Like this might be just a take that’s not analytically correct whatsoever. But I feel like when I’m watching this game, we the Red Wings, not this game, but the Red Wings as a whole, the Red Wings try to either score on the initial shot, which of course they are, right? Or they try to make a beautiful like backdoor pass and sometimes just go to the hard areas in front of the net and play for the rebound. And obviously this was like a mishandled puck that bounced around and came to EMTT Finny, but he went to the net where you want the puck to go and it resulted in a goal. Same thing happened last game. He went to the net and Dylan Larkin found him and he scored a goal. JT Comfort went to the net and a flutter shot came through and he deflected it. Going to the hard areas, you will get rewarded. And it just and this is just more me getting on a soap box because it feels like the Red Wings have struggled this season and converting those rebound chances. We talked about it, right? Finishing there’s been a lot of rebound chances where there’s just nobody in the in the vicinity. So Finny continuing to get rewarded is like it’s like a double win for me because it’s like ah it’s the rookie scoring a goal and also you’re proving my point. Get to the hard area. Uh but I love EMTT Finny. did take the assist away from Larkin, which I I don’t understand because I know it went off of a St. Louis blue who was trying to gain possession, but he never had possession. And they even said it on the broadcast like the player fumbled the puck and it just popped out front. He never had solid possession. So, I I wonder if they then will retroactively give that assist back to Larkin to help keep his point streak alive. Not that it matters, but it’s just a nice little anecdote to see how long it lasts. For sure. I I I agree with everything you just said and I think that Finny is a perfect fit. I mean, honestly, you could kind of argue like he’ll that style will work with anybody, but I think he’s a really good fit with Larkin and Raymond long term. And there’s obviously been some mixing and matching with the injuries and whatnot about who’s playing with who. But I I I think that having a guy like that on a line with two other skilled positions is going to work out really well long term, right? Uh the only other thing I had for this game is I just want to shout out JT Confrer and Jonathan Barren as a whole. We’ve been talking a lot about how the depth scoring needs to get going, especially with key players either not scoring or being hurt. Uh JT Comr and Jonathan Bear in the last few games have stepped up in that role. Confer’s got two goals in the last few. Jonathan Bearren’s got backto back power play goals as well. He had a couple of really good opportunities. The best games I’ve seen those two players play in quite some time. and they need to be good if the Red Wings want to keep winning games without key players. So, just wanted to give them a quick shout out. Yeah. Yeah. And and Barren’s obviously someone we’ve been pretty uh hard on. Yeah. I guess hard on’s the right way. like he’s just somebody that we’ve we’ve really kind of focused on and put under a microscope these last couple of years just because of you know expectations and and the the growth of the rest of the roster and where he kind of fits in and um really the whole dynamic of the depth scoring changes if he takes a step forward and and you know produces. So, um, yeah, tip with the cap, man. That’s it’s that’s it’s always good to see, right? And like he’s trying defensively in this game, too. Obviously, on the the goal, that’s been a trend since the preseason to be fair to him. He he’s been doing that a lot more just this year as a whole, except for the game against Montreal where he fled the zone and they got scored on. Anyways, uh I I think you could probably point to like Right. Correct. That just stands out different people and be like, “Wow, they played terrible defensively in that game.” uh neighbors in the goal the goal neighbors scored that wasn’t because of Barren. Bearrin actually came back covered Edson and took the took the play or took the body. He was trying to play a good he made a good smart play covering for Edmonson and was engaged in that play. It was the other two forwards on that play that really failed on that missed their assignments in that instance. Uh the only other thing I have Scotty is not this game related but we are recording this after Sunday practice and Lin and Sherrot did not skate maintenance days. The big news obviously is Kane will not travel with the team to St. Louis. So he will not play against St. Louis on Tuesday, but they hope he joins the team on the West Coast road trip in California. So Hope is doing a lot of the heavy lifting in that sentence. But I believe this kind of indicates that it’s just it’s a day-to-day thing for him. And if it’s more serious than that, I think we would know by now. So, a little bit of relief in the fact that it’s just day-to-day, but also get healthy soon. Patrick Kane, we need we need that hockey IQ. Correct. Correct. And you know, the special teams needs it really at the moment. All right, Scotty. You have any final thoughts? I don’t think so, man. Good. Uh, I mean hopefully just a win that can propel you for like a win that you’re hoping to take momentum out of, right? You’re like, “Okay, when when we play our game, this is a very difficult team to beat when they play their game for three periods.” Um, apparently even when they only play their game for like a period and a half, they’re they’re really tough to beat. So imagine how tough they would be when uh if they played three. But yeah, like this is I I think really an eyeopening kind of game where it’s like okay when when when things are are going right that they everything is kind of clicking and and firing on all cylinders. Uh but the flip side of that coin is is a team that can also kind of lose to anybody as well. So it’s Yeah, I don’t know. I’m hoping that this is a a wakeup call and kind of a a momentum building win. Big win, too. win 15 out of the Atlantic division got the max amount of points possible in Saturday. 15 points because it was uh Buffalo was playing in division. I think it was against Tampa. No, it was Toronto they played against in that hockey game. So that game went to overtime. So Buffalo who lost still got the maximum point they could in that situation. So all eight teams played, all eight teams got points and all but one got two points. So really important to get that win there because the Atlantic division is is insane. Tampa’s got the fewest amount of points at six. Boston’s got eight, but every other team’s got nine or more points and we can sit there at 12 and second. So it’s going to be this division sucks it and sucks it because it’s so good, not because they’re terrible. It sucks to be in the division. The division very much does not suck, right? So we’ll be back with a new episode tomorrow. We’ll preview the game in St. Louis. So stay tuned for that. Same time, same place. It’s your team every day.
This game was a tale of two halves. For the first 30 minutes Detroit looked lifeless again, much like the game in Long Island. Slow, chasing, missing assignments. Down 4-0, Todd McLellan called a timeout and the team woke up. Berggren, Compher, Finnie, DeBrincat and Edvinsson all scored in a roaring comeback win. #LGRW

Best game I’ve ever been to
Got finnie to win Calder at +6500 before season 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I just realized if keep your pointer in the beginning of the video progress bar you can block out Brian's face for the whole video. That way you don't have to see the weird faces he makes while Scotty is talking.
Rasmussen can use the rest after that cross-check.
Watching that game felt like having bipolar disorder
With all due respect, Scotty, gotta agree with Brian here. The difference maker wasn't the two goals. It was the impetus behind the goals. Without McLellan ripping the team during the timeout, we don't rally. We skate around with low energy and take another loss.
Oh no the West Coast road Trip is coming up? Here comes our annual loss to San Jose
Ffs can we not streak back into streak that are both positive. We hot hot then cold cold. Coach needs yap alot more
Can someone here explain to me whether I'm wrong or whether Seider is becoming increasingly boring to watch and comes across as cocky.. ? His gap control looks worse and his offense is absolutely terrible this year.
But at least we have Finnie! This boy is so much fun!
My difference maker is todd mcclellan's mouth during the time out in the second period. The team came out on fire after that tongue-lashing he gave them.
If the only way they're going to get up is to be yelled at then this is going to get uglier.
Watch the post practice video after this game, apparently mclellen was ripping veterans for being out of position, according to an article, and thats good because as bad as their goaltending has been at times, the lapses in defensive assignment they've had the last 2 and a half games isn't a goalie problem, which is why mclellen has been ripping these guys a new one.if they play the right way they can beat nearly anyone:Edmonton, Florida, Tampa, Toronto etc.. even with average goaltending.
I just loved that it was a lot of guys making the comeback happen that nobody expected. Berggren, Hamonic, Edvinsson. Berggren even had another self created shot at a second goal. When the team needs a team effort, it can happen.
So a thought… With MBN getting just 9 shifts this game, and you obviously want the young guys playing… This being his 9th NHL game in year two (from of draftclass) his possible ELC slide. Would it be better to assign him to GR (if he plays one more NHL game the ELC contract year starts ticking) and recall one of Danielson or Mazur (who both look NHL ready, i would include Wallinder on defenceman there from last game i watched looked real smooth and solid), or would we miss MBN physicallity to much? I can see both sides of it… It's not always a bad idea to let players burn a year early of ELC at 19yo, cause sometimes (like Raymond) you are able to resign them on a more cap friendly deal BEFORE they break out "for real" (in Raymond's case it was more about timing with cap raising, if he would have started his ELC at 20yo, his extension would have been when new cap was revealed and then likely could have demanded 10-12 mil per)
I can live with 20 year olds making mistakes postionallly, but guys who've been in the league 4 years or more can't do that, a guy 4 years or more in the league not back checking cant happen because you don't have a leash anymore when rookies play with more effort. I'll give bergren credit for stepping up his defensive effort, but eventually mbn will score and when he does it will come in bunches and the 2 game sample bergren has given better be every game, because the minute he goes cold and has a game like he did in new york, he's expendable.
After the call out Raymond crashed the net and caused that full team scuffle behind the net. I think that helped get guys engaged too.
I shut the game off on the 4th blues goal… I checked the later on and it was tied! I normally sit and watch all losses but it was a severe blowout and I didn’t need that kind of negativity in my life. Great finish Wings!!
Send MBN and Rass down to GR, call up Mazur. MBN just looks so snakebit right now, and top-line minutes in GR would do him some good.
The cat is back!!
Atleast the red wings coach has the room.. the old wings wouldn’t respond to a time out like that
Can not continue to start games like on Saturday and hope to win.
I stopped watching when it was 4-0 and started watching the UofM vs State game because I wanted to watch a team from Michigan win… But I kept the Wings on a smaller screen and was fully watching it again in the 3rd period.
Unreal comeback. Todd is The God
