STATEMENT: Milwaukee Brewers’ Offense SILENCES Critics in Game 1
And the Brewers take early command of their series with the Cubs. What an amazing Saturday it was at Anfam Field and a great day to be a Brewer fan. You are Locked On Brewers, your daily Milwaukee Brewers podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. Buddy, Chuck Freeman here on a Saturday night. Good to have you along. Locked on Brewers, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. We are your team every day. Longtime sports cer proud host of Locked On Brewers, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. And did I ever tell you that I since doing Lockdown Brewers? The Milwaukee Brewers have never not been NL Central division champs. They haven’t won a series yet either, but you know, they haven’t won a series since 2018. Maybe that is changing this year. All right, coming up on this show, what a terrific day it was. Saturday. Glorious day in many ways at Amfam Field. The one downside, we’ll talk about that with Jacksonio getting injured. The Hammy once again. Yep. It always seems like something’s got to happen with our team. Uh the bullpens, who’s in good shape and who is not. And game two. Well, we’ll touch on that a little bit. Yeah, what a what a great day it was to be out there. What a fantastic day. By the way, this episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Right now, new customers, bet five bucks, win that bet, and you’ll get $300 in bonus bets to use across the app. Use the Game Time app today. Like I told you, I was going, we’re going to be here every day, Monday through Sunday, as long as the brewers are live doing episodes with you. Weekends will be a little shorter because I know people got busy time and all that and maybe you don’t have time to do a half hour. So, I’m going to try to make these a little bit shorter, but I want to kick these out because it’s important. This is a this is a big time. This is this is crunch time, right? This is this postseason. This is what we’ve been waiting all our lives for stuff like this. The Brewers having the best record in baseball never happened. Brewers winning the opener against the Cubs. They’ve never paid the Cubs in the in the playoffs. And uh things look great on Saturday. Got up, beautiful day outside. had not a cloud in the sky. Temperatures unseasonally warm in the 80s. The roof was open and it was just a glorious day. People who live in Wisconsin, you know, October 4th can either be well rarely like it was today, but probably in the 50s, maybe the 40s, could be some rain, maybe in the 60s or early 70s, but never in the mid 80s. I mean, just a wonderful day. Bob Uker shown on us a wonderful, wonderful day for game one. And the Brewers responded just like the weather. The Brewers responded and got the job done. Nine runs in the first two innings. How about that? Let’s face it, what one of you did not have a lump in their throat when Bush hits that leadoff home run against Peralta and think, “Oh no, here we go again.” I mean, I saw the betting line drop, too. The betting line dropped from the Brewers favored by 150 down to 130. It dropped 20 points. So, the smart money was all going on the Cubs and and that’s not a good sign ever. But the Brewers responded with a resounding victory. Bottom of the first inning, three straight doubles to start the inning. Our guy Cheerio on his way to a three hit game over two innings to set a Major League Baseball postseason record. Three hits over the first couple of innings. That’s amazing. He got on to rang my opinion the National League MVP. He got aboard another clutch hit. Even though this is a postseason, another clutch hit and then Contrarus delivers another double. Contrarus later is able to scamper home on an error in the infield by the Cubs by Nicoer makes an error and Contrarus running all the way hustling. And this is what the Brewers do. I don’t think enough was made of that play. I think that was a huge error by Nicoer and I know the ball hits a back spin. huge error and then Contrarus busting it in. A catcher busting it in from second base and scoring and it was deafening at Amfam Field. It was deafening and it didn’t end there. Brewers added three more runs. Eventually chased the starting pitcher for the Cubs. They got to Sroa and he wasn’t any good either. They chased all these guys. They made council use this bullpen. Savali had to come out there and throw four innings and he ate up some innings and that was big for them. But the Brewers man coming out there and touching Boyd the way they did. He was on three days rest his record is not very good on three days rest. His RA his numbers aren’t very good. And the Brewers made him pay. Council got a little testy after the game when asked about it. you know, he did one of these things and you know, I the whole organization was on board of Blade’s pitching. Okay, Craig. Whole the whole organization. I’m sure Clubs Nation was on board of that, too, after a sixr run first inning, you know. You know, and of course, somebody asked the question, you know, we pitched them three days rest and council, you know, as these guys, these managers love to do when things aren’t going well, they love to turn it on the media. I like, you know, if he had won that game and you asked that same question, Craig would have gave, you know, look, uh, you know, he would have been fine with it, but he was irritated. That’s fine, Craig. Get irritated all you want. Get irritated all you want. That’s just great. on top of it beating council. And I know I said yesterday I’m past it, but yeah, I I’m tell you that that was such a a wonderful day today. And that six-run first inning, if you’re a Brewers fan, and all you are, how are you not in glory today? Taking the first game against the Cubs 91 after two innings without a home run. in your face. All you baseball experts, all these major league experts who’ve never seen the Brewers play maybe two or three times on the Fox national game. Of course, you would never see the Brewers play on ESPN. But, you know, they say, “Well, the Brewers can’t win this way. Can’t win with home runs without home runs. You know, you need some power.” Well, the Brewers put up nine runs over the first two innings and put the pressure on the Cubs and had their starting pitcher Boyd out of the game. I don’t know. It worked pretty good to me. I don’t know what you got to think, but I thought, you know, their offensive attack was great. Yeah, they didn’t score any more runs the rest of the day, but I’m good, man. I’m good. Win the first game. Now, you force the Cubs. If you’re going to lose a series, you got to lose three of your next four. Not saying that’s going not going to happen, but in a fivegame set, a fivegame set, winning game one is so pivotal. You lose game one in a seven game set, you got to win four of the next set. Uh six. You win game uh you lose game one in a five game set, you got to win three of the next four. Odds heavily favor the Brewers right now. But they got a lot. This series by no means is over. By no means is over. And the Brewers are going to have to deal with the the Cheerio injury now. As soon as he crossed the bag and he pulled up and the home plate ump uh the first base umpire motioned for the Brewers trainer to come out there right away. I was like, “Oh boy, that’s the hamstring.” And the Brewers right now are calling it hamstring tightness. Had an MRI done. We do not know the results as of late Saturday night here. Now, I’ll tell you this, Cherio in the postgame interview, he downplayed it. He said basically he feels better now than the first time he hurt the hamstring. Uh, now I’ll tell you this. I think this might be Churio soft selling it either way because when he I was there when he when he injured himself the first time back in late July and he’s did the same thing. Oh, you know, I’ll be all right. I’ll be okay. He said it through a translator. I’ll be okay. I’ll be all right. Uh, you know, it’s no big deal. I should be good. And as we know, he went to miss, you know, quite a bit of August there. And the Brewers did get it done without him, by the way. They won 14 in a row. Turio went on the injured list and they won 14 in a row. A guy by the name of Ike Collins stepped up. Another reason why Ike Collins should be rookie of the year. And Ike Collins is is gonna come up and play a big role here. And so is Perkins. Collins came in and pinch ran. and Collins, he didn’t start because of the um he didn’t start. They started Perkins in center field and uh Collins is he’s the guy now, right? He is the guy. Uh and I feel really good with that because nothing I asked him the other day in the locker room. I said, “Why doesn’t the team feel any pressure?” He said, “We don’t. We just feel play loose. We just go out there and play ball. We know what we do and that is it. These guys know what there’s no pressure.” And and the fact that these guys had seven days off, seven well six days off. They had six days off. All right. And they kind of well sort of maybe mailed in last weekend series against Cincinnati. They needed that restart. They needed the refresh. We wanted what we get with the Brewers after that refresh and we saw nine runs over the first two innings. I think this team is plenty good. Told you guys, don’t worry. Brewers now in the driver’s seat. Like I said, don’t think the series is over by any means. A lot a lot of work ahead. I mean, it’s not gonna The Cubs are not going to just lay down here, even though the Cubs are known as team lifeless lifeless among some people out there. Um, and they kind of were, but three of their six hits were home runs. They had a couple of other feeble hits, but the Brewers dominated with their pitching. And Freddy Peralta, Freddy Peralta was great. We’ll talk about Freddy. We’ll tell you about the Brewers bullpen. gets a little relax today as well because Freddy goes out there despite giving up the leadoff home run and he sets he ties a Brewers record. We’ll get to that next year on Lockdown Brewers. Lockdown Brewers part of Lockdown Podcast Network. We are your team every day. Man, man, I’m in a good mood tonight. I’m always in a good mood doing the show, but I’m telling you, you win a game like that over your rivals in a playoff game against them, how can you not how can that just not kick off a great weekend? FanDuel NFL season coming up Sunday. FanDuel got an offer you don’t want to miss. Right now, you put $5 down, if it hits, you’re going to get $300 in bonus bets to use across the app on FanDuel. There’s NHL exhibition, NHL, NBA exhibition will be starting up. Whatever you want, tennis, all there on FanDuel. And their live betting is just fantastic. Check out their live betting on the NFL Sunday. It is just terrific. But the best part about it, you bet five bucks and if it hits, you’re going to get $300 in bonus bets to use across the app. But FanDuel, America’s number one sports book. Good to have you along here. Late Saturday night, early Sunday morning. Brewers have uh there will be three days off in this fivegame series, which is odd. Day off today, they’ll play Monday, day off Tuesday. They’ll play Wednesday, Thursday, and hopefully not. If they got to come back to Milwaukee, they’ll have a day off on Thursday. So, Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday are the scheduled days off in this really weird. Well, the American League Championship uh the American League play uh well obviously there’s one American League playoff series tomorrow. There’s one National League playoff series tomorrow. So, one series will have a rest day on Sunday, one will play in each league. And the Brewers so happen to have the rest day on Sunday. I thought you would think that with the Brewers having a rough that they’d have to play on Sunday. I’m glad. Hey, Brewers aren’t up against the NFL. More exposure for them. 8:00 on Monday night. Yeah, up against Monday Night Football, which will be an hour into it, but at some point the Brewers will be the standalone game against the Cubs for all of America to see Cubs bullpen. Craig Council’s talking about his bullpen. He thought that Savali coming in getting the four innings. And by the way, I I expect the Brewers fans to really get on Savali when he was introduced. I didn’t hear it. I thought it was kind of mild, but that’s okay. We got bigger fish to fry. Savalei did come in and give him five innings of scoreless innings and that was pretty big for the bullpen. But council having to go to his bullpen in the first inning already. Uh that was not good. But council thinks everything is going to be reset and I think they are council and and they got the day off. That’s going to be reset for them. Brewers didn’t have to use any of their backend guys, right? Ube was up in the bullpen, but we’re going to be all good going into Monday in game two with a fresh bullpen. Peralta took it into the sixth inning, left with two outs, got a standing ovation, struck out nine. That ties a franchise record for the Brewers. Uh, previously set by Woodruff and Don Sutton. Don Sutton did it in 1982. So, Peralta was great. Gave up that early home run, but was magnificent. Murphy said after the game said, “Yeah, it’s a lot tougher than you think pitching with a six to1 lead.” I don’t know. I’d rather pitch with a six to1 lead than a one- nothing lead. And I get it. Maybe psychologically you’re bearing down a little bit more when you got a one-run lead, but still. And that, you know, the same thing with closers. Closers come in with a four-run lead. They always tend to give up some runs. The theory is with starting pitchers, you give them too big of a lead and they take the foot off the pedal. But Freddy didn’t do any of that. The bullpen was great. Three solo home runs for the Cubs. Um, very good. Brewers didn’t hit any home runs, but that’s good. Hey, prove to the nation you can win without hitting the long ball. I’m good with that. plenty good. Four of those six runs, by the way, unearned in the first inning. Four of those six runs. All right, Brewers bullpin looks in good shape. Cubs will be in likely good shape. And uh game two starters, we like to think it’s going to be Brester for the Brewers. Don’t really know yet for the Cubs. Didn’t see anything. Let me check here just in case something did come across here on a on a Sunday night or a Saturday night. No, nothing yet. Nothing yet. But Priest a good bet that he is going to go. And with Kintana on the 40man roster, the 40man roster, the postseason roster, he’s a good bet, I think, to start game three. Good bet to start game three. A couple of roster surprises. We’ll get to that. Before the game, the rosters were announced. Um, you know, I talked about this the other day on my podcast. What will be the roster surprises? We’ll get to that next here on Lockdown Brewers. Lockdown Brewers prize picks. Price picks is a great way to go. Let’s say you’re liking, oh, I don’t know, Terra over a half hit in a game. Maybe you like somebody in the NFL like Saquon Barkley an over on touchdowns. Josh Allen an over on passing. Whatever it is, price picks. You play more or less on player stats and you could win big. The more that you add to that, you know, a two-teamer, three team, four team, five team, the more you could win. And right now, price picks. Download the app today. Use the promo code locked on MLB. 50 bucks in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup. Locked on MLB 50 bucks in lineups. First $5 lineup you play price picks. It’s good to be right. And man, being right can get you paid with price picks. Don’t miss the excitement of this football season in the Major League Baseball playoffs with Price Picks where it is good to be right. All right. kind of weird being here on the microphone on a on a Saturday night on lockdown Brewers, but man, I was so happy to get back here from the game today and being out there and cover the game and to be back here on the mic. Uh game two again, we don’t know the starters. Uh somebody asked me a few times when I got home tonight on text, uh what kind of crowd was it tonight or this afternoon. Uh I’d say 8020 Brewers fans, maybe 8515. Brewer fans were loud and right from the very get-go. Yeah, you heard the Cubs fans when Bush hit that home run, but Brewer fans got after it today. And you know what? That doesn’t surprise me because Brewers fans, man, no championships, like I always say, but you guys are the best. You know, we’ve had our teeth kicked in a few times as Brewers fans. We just keep going right back out there and getting the job done, supporting this team. That’s why Milwaukee’s got a major league baseball team because you Brewer fans, you haven’t had anything won your direction. This team owes you some. Championships are overdue, but you guys are amazing. 2.6 million fans and that place was jumping jumping on Saturday. It’ll be jumping on Monday night as well. All right, kind a couple of things back to council. Did you hear that? They kind of trolled him on Friday because council allegedly does not like yacht rock, which is like Michael McDonald, Fleetwood Mack kind of music, you know, mellow music during Cubs batting practice on Friday. Apparently, they were playing all yacht rock, Neil Diamond. They’re rolling all that all that music out there for Craig. Apparently, he does not like yacht rock. Um, and then of course on the scoreboard, I think it was today they put on the scoreboard Craig Council’s video on what it means to be a Milwaukee Brewer. How about that? Brewer Brew was trolling council a little bit. Welld deserved. Just like they trolled him when he his first game back with the Brewers back on Memorial Day of last year. You know, they played I think they played that on on the scoreboard as well last year, but they played it again on on Saturday. So, all right, off day. The Brewers will have a workout. There’ll be some media availability, any news and notes. Of course, I’ll be back here Sunday night, early Monday morning with another podcast to tell you what exactly happened um at that uh with council with uh Andy Murphy news, certainly with Jacksonio. We’re going to get that hamstring news. We’ll see what the latest is. We may not know the truth on that to be honest with you. The Brewers probably know. Again, they’re not going to tell us. They’re not going to give us the keys to the kingdom. They’re not going to tell us what’s going on. Surio saying after the game today that, “Oh, he feels better than it did last time.” I’m telling you right now, don’t believe it. It might be true, but he’s that they’re not going to tell us. It’s the postseason, man. You were keeping everything close to the vest. You know, you don’t know how to give them the Cubs any advantage at all. You don’t have to tell them anything. That’s why both teams haven’t even announced their starting pitchers yet, which could get announced tomorrow on Sunday, but who knows? All I know is the Brewers are up one- nothing in this series and coming back if they win Monday. Looking good going into Wrigley. But a huge huge game coming up on Monday night. Lot to talk to about between now and then. We’ll see how the Cubs reset. We’ll see what the Brewers do and we’ll see if Churio is available. We’ll see if he’s available for Monday. If he’s even taking batting practice on Sunday. I doubt it. We’ll see. It’s going to do it. everybody for the weekend edition Lockdown Brewers playoff edition of Locked On Brewers part of the Lockdown podcast network. I still think the Cubs have more talent than the Brewers overall but they just look like a bunch of individuals out there. They don't play like a team at all. They don't seem very unified or motivated. Their manager has a very dull personality. And it shows despite their high payroll.
Hopefully the Brewers can take Mondays game then I think they will win the series. I don't like having to play two in Chicago with us only split here.
Jackson should be the DH going forward.
We need Chourio if we want get world series
Easy…easy can't count them out
ESPN and TBS seem to have a problem with a team scoring 9 runs without a home run. Well boo hoo, we'll give them some home runs, just getting the bats warmed up today.
It's only game1. Hope Quinn will have a great start.
Cubs in 3
I’m tired of the secrecy with the Chourio news, he did a PC and said he’s good to go, what ever happened to players playing years ago? Do the MRI whatever, this opportunity isn’t every day. If he says he’s good he’s good- let HIM DECIDE- ITS HIS CAREER AND HIS BODY! ITS BECOME A SOFT ASS LEAGUE, REMEMBER KIRK GIBSON IN THE WS ANYONE?????
Thanks Chuck
The arrogance is ASTOUNDING!
This time it didn't look as bad as last time.
Longer episodes in playoffs?
The Brewers had five days off, not six. Their last game of the season was on Sunday, September 28, when they won game #97. So, they were off Monday through Friday.
I think the Brewers offense phoned it in after Freddy went out. They just wanted to wrap the game up. Hopefully, them boys continue to cook up on offense!
They couldn't keep the camera off Council in the first 2 inning. It was awesome! Just what the doctor ordered with 2 big innings to start the game
I’m not sure I’ve seen them play better. I was stunned in the best way those first two innings. They keep this up, the true challenge, they’re going to the top. Great job, boys. Churio, though…😳
It was glorious, especially for me living in Chicago. The announcers were so bad, all they talked about was Home Runs, you would think Darling being a Mets guy he should know that doesn't necessarily lead to wins. They just don't get how the Brewers do it which is crazy because it sure looks like traditional baseball that I grew up with.
Hope we run through the entire playoffs without hitting a single HR.
Looking good Chuck!
Watching the national media fearful that they have to acknowledge this team might be a force is great.
Such a beautiful game to watch….esp after that Busch leadoff HR. Gotta buckle down and get this next game and really put some pressure on them. Don't take the foot off the gas pedal. I believe in Collins if Chourio can't go….we have shown we can win with him consistently in the lineup. Go brewers!!!
Ron darling is a Weiner announcer, oh the cubbies are going go be mad, you can win and bs mad, I hope the brewers go long ball game two to shut up the announcers
I knew about the music for Cubs batting practice on Friday but had no idea that was for Craig. 🤣
The announcers glazed the cubs and kept saying the brewers will struggle blah blah blah
You are so smart chucky
Even though I'm a life long Cardinals fan I want to wish the Brewers the best of luck in the playoffs. Also want to wish the Cubs the worse of bad luck.
But that’s with the cubs hitting 3 home runs.
