He’s Baseball’s $325 Million Pitcher—and He Might Be Underpaid

  1. This October, Yoshinobu Yamamoto has proven himself to be something even the Dodgers couldn’t have predicted when they signed him for $325 million. Yamamoto has become an ace—the kind of old-school ace that would make Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale proud.

He’s shown that no matter how much the game has transformed, one thing will never change: There’s nothing in baseball more important—and more beautiful—than a starting pitcher who is in complete control.

  2. regardless of what we might think about his salary, this guy is on another level entirely. Smoltz said it best on that game 2… he is like the final boss in a video game.

  3. If you’re getting guaranteed generational wealth for less than a decade of work you’re not underpaid

  4. 325 million on a team whose top player is set to receive deferred payments in the hundreds of millions long after he retires… as great as Yamamoto is, pitching prowess only lasts so long and he’s being paid enough.

  5. he’s underpaid because he’s a beast outperforming expectations. but also because of runaway inflation. thanks orange man.

  6. Shohei proposed the deferrals specifically with Yama in mind. Getting Yama paved the way for Roki. I might buy the conspiracy theory that MLB introduced the DH in the NL “just in time” for the Dodgers to get Shohei in free agency to start this domino.

  7. He’s likely going to opt out if he keeps this up even if his contract is back loaded.

  8. With how much revenue he brings in, especially in foreign markets yeah he probably is a little underpaid which is wild to say, bc dudes already loaded

  9. My dad is an old-school college baseball coach. Yamamoto’s pitching made him applaud instinctively.

  10. The only true highlight of the 2025 season as an Orioles fan is watching Yamamoto take a no hitter into two outs, bottom of the ninth.
