“LET STEVEY DO HIS THING!” 😤 | Chris Chelios talks Red Wings with the NHL on TNT crew
ON IT. WE’LL GET TO HIM. ENJOY THE GRAPHIC. IN THE. >> MEANTIME. >> DYLAN LARKIN, MICHIGAN GUY, BORN AND RAISED, PLAYED FOR THE WOLVERINES, DRAFTED BY THE RED WINGS, NOW THE CAPTAIN. PLAYOFFS AS A ROOKIE. HASN’T BEEN BACK SINCE FRUSTRATED LAST YEAR. REMEMBER AT THE DEADLINE, THEY DIDN’T REALLY DO MUCH. HERE’S WHAT HE HAD TO SAY ABOUT ALL THAT SAID THAT THERE WAS A CHANCE, RIGHT? THIS TEAM COULD HAVE GAINED SOME MOMENTUM WITH PICKING UP GUYS AT THE TRADE DEADLINE. THAT DIDN’T HAPPEN. THEY DIDN’T GET THE SPARK. THEY DIDN’T GET THAT MORALE BOOST THAT THEY COULD HAVE GOTTEN. WE SPOKE TO THE TEAM’S GM, STEVE YZERMAN, LAST WEEK. THIS IS YEAR SEVEN OF THE ICING PLAN. WE ASKED HIM ABOUT LARKIN’S WORDS AND HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH DYLAN LARKIN. >> I WANT TO SPEAK FOR DYLAN. I’D LIKE TO THINK WE HAVE A GREAT RELATIONSHIP. I ENJOY TALKING WITH HIM. HE’S VERY OPEN WITH ME. WE COMMUNICATE VERY WELL, SO I THINK WE HAVE A REALLY GREAT RELATIONSHIP. YOU KNOW, THE COMMENTS AT THE END OF THE SEASON AREN’T THAT BIG OF A DEAL AND CERTAINLY DIDN’T CREATE ANY DIVIDE IN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HE AND I. >> HERE ARE THOSE WORDS ARE MENTIONED WITH DYLAN LARKIN RIGHT AROUND THE TRADE DEADLINE. IT SEEMS TO ME, YOU KNOW STEVE YZERMAN WELL, HE’S ABOUT BUSINESS. HE’S NOT GOING TO LET THAT GET IN THE WAY. WHEN WE HAVE HIM ON. HE’S COME ON WITH US A FEW TIMES NOW. HE’S LISTEN, HE’S SHORT. HE’S TO THE POINT WHEN YOU PLAY WITH HIM. DID HE TALK. DID HE LIKE DID HE GO ON. DID HE OR DID IT COME OUT WHERE I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY. IT’S QUICK, BUT IT’S IMPORTANT. >> WELL, HIS LEADERSHIP QUALITIES WERE BY EXAMPLE WHAT HE DID ON THE ICE, NO QUESTION. AND IN THE GYM AND HIS WORK ETHIC. AND NO ONE BETTER, NEVER HAD A BETTER CAPTAIN. I COMPARE HIM TO GUYS LIKE BOB GAINEY, AND HE HAD NO ONE TO TEACH HIM INITIALLY WHEN HE CAME IN AS AN 18 YEAR OLD, AS A CAPTAIN, THAT’S A LOT TO PUT ON YOUR SHOULDERS. SO AGAIN, HE DOESN’T SUGARCOAT ANYTHING, AND I BELIEVE EVERY WORD HE SAYS ABOUT HIM AND DYLAN LARKIN. LARKIN GREW UP A WINGS FAN. HE KNOWS HE’S SEEN HIS RESUME AND THE SUCCESS. SO HOW DO YOU QUESTION IT? HE’S FRUSTRATED LARKIN AT THE END OF THE YEAR, HE’S COMPETITIVE, HE SAID WHAT HE HAD TO SAY AND HE’S NOT GOING TO PANIC. AND LIKE I SAID, I’M SURE THEY HAVE A GREAT RELATIONSHIP. WELL, HE’S HE’S BEEN THE BEST TEAM BEST PLAYER ON THE TEAM FOR A WHILE. RIGHT. SO HE’S HAD TO REMAIN PATIENT FOR ALL THESE DRAFTS TO HAPPEN. ALL THIS TALENT TO FINALLY REACH THEIR POTENTIAL. SO I CAN UNDERSTAND THE FRUSTRATION. WHAT DID YOU MAKE OF A PLAYER OF LARKIN’S CALIBER? SAYING THOSE COMMENTS AFTER THE YEAR IS OVER AND OVER, ARE YOU OKAY WITH THAT KIND OF RAISE AN EYEBROW? LIKE, WHAT DID YOU MAKE OF IT? I MEAN, I AM ABSOLUTELY. SOMETIMES YOU LIKE THINGS TO BE DONE BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. THAT’S HOW I KIND OF I BELIEVE THAT’S THE WAY I CARRIED MYSELF AS A CAPTAIN AND AS A PLAYER. BUT AGAIN, IT FRUSTRATION AT THE END OF THE YEAR AND I THINK IT’S OVER. IT’S A NEW YEAR. LARKIN’S GOT OFF TO A GREAT START. SO THAT HASN’T AFFECTED HIM ONE BIT AND PROBABLY USED IT AS MOTIVATION ALSO OVER THE SUMMER. >> TO KIND OF BACK IT UP A LITTLE BIT. HE’S FLYING RIGHT NOW. YOU SEE THE STATS AT 1111 POINTS IN SIX GAMES TO START THE SEASON HERE. AND HE IS THE HEARTBEAT OF THIS TEAM. AND IT STARTS WITH HIM IN SO MANY WAYS. THE WAY HE LEADS THE WAY HE PLAYS THE GAME. BUT DETROIT IS AN INTERESTING TEAM BECAUSE YOU LOOK AT THE BACK END, THERE’S A LOT TO I SHOULD SAY THIS. THEY PUT A LOT ON A LOT OF YOUNG PLAYERS RIGHT NOW, BUT THEY’RE COMING THROUGH FOR THEM PLAYING REALLY WELL AND THERE’S THE SMARTNESS. THEY’RE SHOWING THAT IT’S ALMOST LIKE THEY LOOK MORE EXPERIENCED THAN WHAT THEY ARE. WHEN YOU SEE THEM PLAY THE DEFENSEMEN. >> IT’S PRETTY REMARKABLE, RIGHT? YOU GET INTO A NINE YEAR DROUGHT. THERE’S PRESSURE ON YZERMAN AND DOESN’T DO MUCH OF THE DEADLINE, DOESN’T DO A TON OVER THE SUMMER. THEY’RE YOUNGER. THEY’RE ACTUALLY THEY’VE GONE TO YOUTH MOVEMENT AND IT’S WORKING NOW. >> YEAH, I THINK THAT’S PROBABLY THE MOST SHOCKING PART OF ALL THIS IS THEY DIDN’T REALLY GO OUT AND SIGN THAT BIG FREE AGENT. THEY DID ADDRESS GOALTENDING. I LIKE THE VAN RIEMSDYK PICKUP. GREAT NET FRONFRONT PRESENCE, BUT I’VE BEEN VERY, VERY IMPRESSED. LET’S START WITH EMMETT FINNEY, 20 YEARS OLD, A SEVENTH ROUND DRAFT PICK. AND JUST THESE LITTLE DETAILS TO HIS GAME AND WHY HE’S BEING GIVEN OPPORTUNITY ON THE FIRST LINE. SO HE’S A LEFT WINGER OKAY. LARKIN IS THE FARTHEST GUY IN THE O-ZONE AS THIS PUCK COMES OUT. NOW FINNEY AS THE LEFT WINGER RECOGNIZES THAT WITH HIS HOCKEY INTELLIGENCE. AND HE TAKES OVER LARKIN’S POSITION. SO AS IT GOES D TO D INSIDER GETS IT. LOOK AT FINNEY. RECOGNIZE WHERE APPLETON IS NOW GOING TO GO. HE BECOMES AN OPTION WITH A STICK ON THE ICE IN THE MIDDLE. OKAY, SO THE PUCK DOESN’T COME TO HIM, BUT HE REALIZES I’M STILL THE CENTER ICE. SO AS THIS GOES D TO D, NOW HE’S GOING TO OPEN UP, COME LOW AND SLOW ENOUGH TO CREATE SEPARATION FROM THAT CHECK FROM FLORIDA. AND HE KNOWS HE’S GOT PRESSURE COMING IN ON HIM. AND NOW HE KNOWS THAT LARKIN HAS HIS POSITION. SO WHAT DOES HE DO WHEN HE GETS HIS PASS. IT’S GOING DEEP. AND NOW HE KNOWS HE’S THE F3. AND AS IT COMES AROUND THAT’S NOW THE STRONG SIDE. SEIDER WANTS TO KEEP PRESSURE, SO HE’S GOING TO PINCH. FINNEY THEN TAKES HIS SPOT. HE COVERS SOMETIMES YOUNG GUYS IN THAT SITUATION THEY MIGHT JUST ALL OF A SUDDEN DIP IN WHERE HE WAS RESPONSIBLE AND SMART ENOUGH TO KNOW NOT TO DO THAT. AND EVEN IN THIS SITUATION WHERE IT GETS TURNED OVER, HE REMAINS PATIENT AS THE F3, IT GETS TURNED OVER. AND WHAT DOES HE DO AFTER THAT? REALIZES THERE’S NO ONE IN FRONT OF THE NET. HE’S GOING TO CREATE A LITTLE BIT OF SCREEN ON BOBROVSKY. AND THEN APPLETON IS ABLE TO FINISH THIS. AND THIS IS THE OTHER ANGLE HERE. SO FOR A KID THAT’S 20 YEARS OLD, FOR ME IT’S NOT SO MUCH HIS PLAY WITH THE PUCK. ALTHOUGH HE’S GOT FIVE POINTS AND HE’S LEADING THE TEAM IN HITS RIGHT NOW. IT’S HIS ABILITY AND HIS INTELLIGENCE AWAY FROM THE PUCK. AS A 20 YEAR OLD IN THIS LEAGUE. >> SEE DETROIT WARMING UP RIGHT HERE. SHELLEY, I’M GOING TO COME BACK TO YOU BECAUSE ONE THING WE TALKED WITH STEVE EISMAN WAS ABOUT IT’S HOCKEY TOWN. I KNOW IT’S A FOUR SPORT PRO TOWN, BUT IT IS HOCKEY TOWN. SO YOU CAN SAY THAT THE TIGERS ARE GOOD. THE LIONS ARE GOOD. THEY’RE BOTH CONTENDERS RIGHT NOW DETROIT THE PISTONS ARE BACK IN THE PLAYOFF PICTURE LAST YEAR. BUT YOU’VE BEEN IN THAT CITY NINE YEAR DROUGHT I MEAN PATIENCE WEARS THIN AT SOME POINT. AND I KNOW THAT EISENMANN GETS A BIG GRACE AND A LARGER ONE THAN MOST GM’S WOULDN’T GIVEN HIS HISTORY. BUT THIS IS A THIS IS A CITY THAT FEELS LIKE IT REVOLVES AROUND PLAYOFF HOCKEY. 25 STRAIGHT YEARS. >> YEAH, WELL, KENNY HOLLAND WAS TRYING TO GET THAT STREAK AND EXTEND THAT STREAK OF THE PLAYOFFS. I THINK THAT COST HIM YEARS TRYING TO REBUILD THE TEAM. SO STEVIE WAS HANDED THAT FIRST OF ALL. SO AGAIN NO ONE WORKS HARDER THAN STEVE YZERMAN. HE HAS NO HOBBIES, NO NOTHING. HE JUST LIVES AND SLEEPS AND BREATHES HOCKEY. SO YEAH. SO IT’S GETTING TO THAT POINT NOW THOUGH. AND I KNOW CHRIS ILITCH HAS ALL THE CONFIDENCE IN THE WORLD IN HIM. LET STEVIE DO HIS THING. YOU HAVE TO LIKE I SAID, HIS RESUME SPEAKS FOR ITSELF AND HOPEFULLY THIS IS A YEAR. YOU KNOW, THEY’VE GOTTEN OFF TO A GREAT START. YOU SAW WHAT HAPPENED LAST YEAR, HOW THEY MISSED THPLAYOFFS
Chris Chelios joined the NHL on TNT panel to talk about the Detroit Red Wings, their playoff push, and why he believes in Steve Yzerman’s plan to bring the franchise back to playoff status.

Let Stevey do his thing? You mean wait until the fans scream at him to make the no brainer decisions?
it'll happen
how the heck do the Wings play the way they did in the last 5 games and then come out against NHL's trash can team and get dominated by them? Wings didnt register their first shot on goal until the 9 min mark. Pathetic. They Beat Florida, Tampa and the Leafs twice and lose to this team like that? beyond pathetic. this game sums up the wing's last 9 seasons. Typical Wings. we can beat the best teams in the league and get destroyed by the worst.
Larkin was right. We need talent and I am happy our young guys are stepping up. Could use another consistent veteran. I am still mind blown they couldn't land Stamkos and lost him to a dog shit Nashville team.
Whata's the 10 year shoulder patch?
Chris is looking a lot like Ken Hllands; in fact, I thought that was Ken in the thumbnail.
Yzerman/Larkin stuff super old news and hilarious effort by TNT at trolling up controversy
I’m watching this after they just looked horrible in their loss to Buffalo
We have fallen so far that winning a cup isn't even possible and we are setting our sights on getting a wildcard slot. We've changed nearly every player, it will soon be time to make decisions about management. We won't wait forever.
Steve has done nothing in his GM career to deserve this much rope. Little I is just like mose of these Homer fans who love Steve for his playing career but look past the man has won nothing as a GM.
Chris Ilitch didnt do the team any favors building that goofy ass arena with the worst upper bowl of any detroit arena. And concessions and tickets so expensive blue collar fans can't even get in the building with their family. So who's left to cheer on the team and give them energy? A bunch of corporate suits who barely sit in their seats and when they do they are emotionless.
Detroit needs to move on from Yzerman and Drapers Management. Move Larkin for trade value and toss Rasmussen and Copp in for good measure because those two are useless.
I'm concerned that Stevey has filled the management team with to many Buddies and turned DRW into a country club. Compare this to Vegas that went out getting the most competent people they could find and won the cup in five years.
Dylan was not wrong!
Just trust the plan, bro. At this rate our wings will most likely be back in the playoffs by 2045. Not understanding why everyone is so impatient, bro 😂
I think any fans of the Red Wings will eventually realize we were WILDLY spoiled with the 25 years of playoffs and the most cups of any American team. We were beyond fortunate to see the russian invasion and so many other incredible talents make their way into a Winged Wheel.
Eventually people need to stop crying about not making the playoffs and trust the process. Enjoy moments like we have now were rookies are showing up and shining out. Enjoy seeing Larkin mature and be a leader. Enjoy seeing talents like Raymond, Kane, and Debrincat get in there and create plays.
You can feel however you want about the Red Wings not making the playoffs. I personally rejoice for other teams being able to have their time to shine and win, because I know how much I LOVED seeing my team win the cup and I want other orgs to have the same feeling (But of course they gotta earn it.)
Look how long ii took Yzerman to start being successful in the playoffs, longer than Larkin. His time is coming, and help is growing around him.
Imagine this: The year is 2008. The Red Wings are hot off a stanley cup win and the lions are 0-16. Someone walks up and tells you in 2025 one of them will be a perennial contender and the other will be on their ninth straight year missing the playoffs. You respond confidently: “The Red Wings are obviously the contenders…. right? Right?” ….oh, the irony of it all.
Welp… the dead wings are back
This is what I know: 7 years into Yzerman's tenure….not 3, not 4….not even 5….but SEVEN – this is one of the most disinteresting, faceless hockey teams I can recall following. I never saw so many garbage players being cycled up and down the lines trying to find a combo that clicks. Larkin is soft. Raymond is soft. These are the leaders? ONE legitimate defenseman in Seider. Edvinsson is a skyscraping stiff. Revolving door of castoff goalies. Relying WAY too much on the offense of soon to be 37 year old Patrick Kane. Kaspar doesn't impress me. Now here come these other kids – great….let's give THEM 3 to 5 MORE years and hope those teenage bodies can somehow bang with NHL muscle. But Steve is a genius…..trust in the plan, man! He needs time….and more time….and MORE time. It's all Ken Holland's fault, dontcha know? There's more grit in my toothpaste than in any player wearing the Winged Wheel. Who are these guys and why would anyone pay to see them play?
the truth is if your best player is dylan larking you are a long ways away from winning a cup unfortunately. no top tier talent on detroit anymore
