Bryce Young DOUTBFUL vs. Buffalo | Can Andy Dalton lead the Carolina Panthers past the Bills?

Bryce Young officially listed as doubtful to play on Sunday versus Buffalo. Can he make the start? And can the Panthers pull off their biggest win in years? This episode of Black On Panthers is brought to you by Mazda. Like our players, Mazda sweats every detail because when you make every move count, pulling off the unexpected is only the beginning. Stay tuned later for highlights in this week’s moving the game forward. Mazda move and be move. We are almost there. two days away from what is the biggest home game in recent memory for the Carolina Panthers as they welcome in the 4-2 Buffalo Bills in a game that I truly honestly believe the Panthers can win and I actually feel really good about their chances to win this game on Sunday. Words I did not expect to say heading into this week eight matchup. Tell you more about that later on. Typically on Fridays we start off with the three keys victory for the game on Sunday. But when the quarterback, that being Bryce Shung here in Carolina, is injured all weekend, there’s some questions, putting that in quotes, about whether he’s going to play on Sunday. We have to start off the show, of course, by talking about the situation there with Bryce Young and his ankle that he injured at the end of the third quarter. He was able to walk off under his own power, but clearly had a limp heading into the locker room there at Metife Stadium. It was not the turf. It was him getting stepped on. Dave Canal does not believe it was a dirty play. Maybe it should have been called as tripping if there would have been a penalty at all, but certainly he did not believe it was the turf at Metife, which has been scrutinized constantly since they put it up there and all the injuries that have happened. No more than I guess you look at the Giants with the league neighbors this year. You look at San Francisco a couple years ago, the blood bath that they had there backto-back weeks against the Jets and the Giants. It was not the turf’s fault and it was not seen as a dirty play, but it is a play that kept Bryce Young at the end of that game on Sunday and appears to be keeping out of the game on this upcoming Sunday against Buffalo. Now, let’s go back to Monday morning. Tom Pelisero in the NFL Network was the first one to report that Bryce Young had suffered a high ankle sprain and an MRA revealed that he was expected to miss this week’s game and potentially could miss a couple more weeks as he recovers and Dalton was going to make the start on Sunday. Later on that afternoon, I headed over to Bank America Stadium to listen what Dave Canals had to say after the Panthers won against New York and looking back at the film and Dave said that Bryce Young was dayto-day. He didn’t want to say what the severity of the injury was. Didn’t want to rule him out. Did say that yes, Andy would start if Bryce can’t go, but he did not rule Bryce Young out on Monday. Come Wednesday, same situation. Said that Bryce was dayto-day, even though he did not practice and he was working off to the side during warm-ups. And I’ll tell you that when the media is allowed at practice for about 30 minutes, the only thing that we see are the guys walking up there, we look at them, warming up, stretching, may see some individual drills, and typically we’re right there where the offensive linemen are. So, very easy to see how those guys are looking. We can see the receivers a little bit to our right. The quarterbacks are way down there. We’re not seeing a ton of what’s going on. During training camp, we see everything even though the sightelines aren’t great. But during the week of the regular season games, we don’t really see that much. So what we do see though is guys who are dressed out and who are not and who are way off to the side at the end of the field. Those are the guys who are not going to play. And Bryce is out there all three days, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday when the media was out there. I did not go to any of the practices this week. He was off to the side every single day, which tells you he’s not going to play. But still, Dave Canalis today on Friday said that Bryce Young is doubtful for the game on Sunday versus Buffalo. And typically, like last week when it came to Garrett Wilson in New York, when a player is listed as doubtful, they ain’t going to play. And when they don’t practice all week long, they’re not going to play. But yet, Dave is saying they want to keep open the possibility that Bryce will play on Sunday against the Bills. It’s gamesmanship. Of course it is. But does Buffalo really believe this? Now for me, I know I work in the media. I’m going to believe Ian Raport and Tom Pelisero and Adam Shfter over Dave Canal pretty much every single day of the week. Yes, Dave has more insight on what’s going on, but is he going to want us to know the truth, the factual information? No. because it does not benefit him and the Carolina Panthers for us and the Bills to know whether Bryce Young is going to play. And I’m curious how John McDermott went about it this week up in Buffalo. My guess is that they did spend some time believing Bryce was going to play, but they have to be wise enough to know that if Sher and Rapport and Pellis are all reporting on Monday that week that Bryce is not going to play, then the injury report comes out on Wednesday that he did not practice. And on Thursday, same case. than today. I’m pretty sure they were expecting and are expecting Andy Dalton be the starter on Sunday. That certainly is my expectation. And it’s unfortunate that Bryce is not going to play in this game. If he does, awesome that Dave was right that he was dayto-day and all the reports on Monday they were premature as Bryce would have been able to go out there and play on Sunday. That does not look like where things are headed. And Dave was even asked, I believe, by Joe Persio athletic on Friday about Bryce not practicing and if he could play in a game where he did not practice all week. Yes, he watched film and did everything that way off the field as far as preparation, but he was not out there working on the reps, working against scout team and all the important things that you need to do leading up to a game on the field in order to be prepared against Buffalo. So, he’s not going to play. Yes, he’s doubtful. Buffalo probably did not waste much time at all believing Bryce was going to play in this game on Sunday. They fly to Charlotte on Saturday. So, it’s not like they have any more practice time to prepare, but they know what they’re getting. And what they’re getting is the Red Rifle Andy Dalton as a starter in this week eight matchup. Now, Bryce will be out on Sunday, but Damen Lewis, he had a shoulder injury last week that popped up in practice on Thursday that caused him to miss the game last Sunday in New York. The Panthers starting their sixth out of seven games offensive line combinations with Damen Lewis out last week and Austin Corbett back off of IR after suffering a knee injury there in week two on the road against Arizona. Now with Damen Lewis who has no injury designation is back on Sunday. He’ll be right back there at left guard. And Corbett, I would assume would be the sixth offensive lineman, meaning Cade Mays will remain in the starting spot. And Dave said this as much last week on Friday that K the expectation was that he would stay there at center. And now that Austin Corbett’s back and now that Damen Lewis is healthy, ready to go, it appears that Austin Corbett certainly has lost that job at center to Cade Mazize for the rest of the season. Maybe at right guard he could get an opportunity to start there instead of Brady Christensen. So that’s something that’ll be interesting to see. Um, but right now they could be starting their seventh out of eight games as far as offensive line combinations or it’ll be uh their sixth in eight games. We’ll see how that plays out. I don’t think I had seen anything about what the plan was there at right guard, whether it be Brady or it could be Austin. Now, Austin, as we know, a couple years ago, his first year in Carolina, he came in and he played right guard every single snap. Uh and then Brady was at left guard and then uh the year after that he had started at at right guard again. I’ve only played a couple of games before getting injured. So we’ll see how that goes. I’m guessing it’s going to be Brady. Uh but then that’s another thing that I’m not sure about. Let’s see. Is there Okay, they sent Let’s do this live and me stall because they did send out a depth chart earlier this week. I just go to panthers.com. That’ be the easy thing for me to do. They had a depth chart this week and let’s see what the depth chart says. Dep chart says right guard is Brady Christensen. So, and then back up left guard is Austin Corbett. So, yeah, Brady Christensen looks like he’ll get to the start again at right guard. Austin Corbett will be their sixth offensive lineman. So, that’s where things stand heading into the game on Sunday. Damen Lewis is back, which is great for the rushing attack against a terrible rushing defense in Buffalo. Bryce Young listed as doubtful, but he did not practice all week in all the NFL insiders who are really never wrong about injury stuff, said he was not going to play on Sunday. So, that’s my expectation and should be your expectation as well heading into this week matchup against the Buffalo Bills. Three keys to victory. Give you those every single Friday and we’ll talk about those next here on Locked on Panthers. The NFL season is here and FanDuel has an offer you don’t want to miss. Terms and conditions apply back here on locked on Panthers and let’s get to it. Every single Friday throughout the regular season I give you my three keys victory. Then on Tuesday the following week, we review how the Panthers did with those Keys last week. They did a great job. Even though it was an ugly, ugly win, but there’s nothing ugly, I guess, about a win because everyone is beautiful. And a win is a win is a win, especially here in Carolina as the Panthers move to 4-3 following their 13-6 win against the New York Jets. And they have faced off now against the dregs of the AFC East, beating New York, beating Miami, losing unfortunately to New England, who clearly has so far been the class of the AFC East. Now they have, in my opinion, their biggest test to date against the Buffalo Bills inside Bank America Stadium on Sunday. And we talked about yesterday with Joe Marino who used to live in Buffalo. Now he’s been here since 95. I will never claim him. Yes, I’m being petty, but being truly from Charlotte, being born in Meckllinburgg County, uh I’m just never going to claim anybody who wasn’t actually from here, especially if their parents are coming. If they’re coming from North Carolina, like from Raleigh or wherever, I’ll claim you as someone being I mean a charia, not necessarily a North Carolinian. Yes. And Joe pays bills, all that. Yeah, I get it. It’s petty. It’s stupid. It’s dumb. I don’t care. I’m going to do me. I’m going to be petty and stupid and dumb and hokey and fake and all that. But there’s going to be a lot of Bills fans. We know that. We’ve expected that. Now, my hope was once this game rolled around that the Panthers would be in a spot to where Panther fans could combat all the Bills fans in that stadium into where it would be a really cool atmosphere like I think we’re going to have on Sunday. Now, they’re still going to be like 75% Bills fans. That’s my expectation at least at the game on Sunday. But, this is a game that Carolina can win. And these are the ways that they can do it on Sunday. Key number one, run the damn ball. I told you yesterday, if you’re here in Charlotte, go to the Park Road Shopping Center, go to Onward Reserve, and they have hats that say run the damn bowl. Go buy one, wear it on Sunday, and let the Panthers know what they need to do to win this game. I understand that Bryce Young’s not going to play. Yes, that matters, but what matters most in this game is Carolina winning up front on the offensive line and handing the ball off to Rico D and Chuba Hubard many times on Sunday down the Bills throat. That is the key to winning this game. The passing offense has not been good this season. It really hasn’t. So, if you don’t have a quarterback who’s not really been throwing the ball a ton with success, I don’t find it to be that big of a deal. Now, Andy, we’ll see what they’re doing in a passing game with him if things open up and all that. And then that creates a whole another conversation and narrative that I don’t really want to do here. But what matters most in this game offensively, at least to me, aside from taking care of the football, is running the damn ball. Buffalo has allowed the fifth most rushing yards through seven weeks in the NFL. The four teams below them, the Bengals, the Titans, the Cowboys, the Dolphins, all bad teams except for Dallas, which don’t know how I feel about them, they’ve played seven games, while Buffalo has played six. So, if they would have played last week, they would probably be last. And after this week, they certainly could still be last in the NFL in rushing yards allowed. Now, looking even further at it at another traditional stat, they are last in yards per rush allowed. that 5.8 which is putrid. They’re second worst in defensive total EPA total rush EPA that is they’re fourth worst in defensive rushing success rate and they are tied for the third most rushing touchdowns allowed. Those numbers all from True Media. The Panthers, meanwhile, are second in the NFL in rushing. They’re eighth in yards per attempt. They’re third in EPA per rush. They’re second in total rush EPA. They’re fifth in rushing success rate. and they’re 10th in explosive rush percentage, which means runs over 12 plus yards. So, the Panthers have been great running the ball, especially the two weeks where Rico Dattle was in there last week. They still had success, not the same amount that they had against Dallas and against Miami with Rico as a primary back. And I think a lot of that was just the Jets really selling out to stop the run. Steve Wils revenge game as a coordinator, trying to have the best scheme you could have possible against New York, against Carolina. And I do think like Damen Lewis not playing that game when he had been really key with the pulls that they had done to the right side with him going from the left to the right. I thought that he was key in the run game against Miami and against Dallas as well. So can’t forget that factor and just the comfort level of the running back rotation. Dave is sticking to it. You may not like it, but he’s sticking to it because they paid Chuba Hubard and Chuba still a good running back. It’s just so interesting to me how fickle fans can be where like you love Chuba then a Rico plays well for two weeks and I understand historic weeks but damn y’all like you you give up on a guy that quickly that’s just that’s wild to me but having both of those guys is a bonus for Carolina. It is a positive for this rushing attack and they should get a heavy dose both Rico and Chub on Sunday against a bad Bills rushing defense and that is really the path to victory on Sunday. Number two, they got to find a way to contain Josh Allen. The Panthers have not faced the best quarterbacks in the league. Trevor Lawrence has not looked good this season. Kyler Murray’s been banged up. Michael Pennix Jr. played the worst game of his career in that 30 to nothing beatd down a couple weeks ago to a tongue bya has all sorts of issues. The three picks last week, the whole nobody showing up for the player only meetings, which actually reflects on your leadership by the way. Tua, that’s just been a mess down there. Dak’s awesome this year. Justin Fields last Tyrod Taylor bad. So they have not really faced great quarterbacks so far this year. Dak right now if you look at EPA per play among quarterbacks in the NFL this season is second. And the rest of the guys they faced off against are 19th, 20th, 23rd, 24th, and 30th. That’s out of 33 qualifying quarterbacks. Josh Allen ranks fifth in EPA per play. He’s the top five guy. He is the MVP favorite when you look over at FanDuel. He is a an alien as Tony Romo always salivates over him every single time there’s a damn game on CBS which makes it borderline unwatchable when the Bills are on CBS with Jim and with Tony because Tony just you got to relax buddy. But Josh is awesome. He’s a really good player. And you look even deeper at some of the rankings, these numbers from True Media. He’s sixth in EPA per dropback. He’s second in explosive play percentage. He’s eighth in explosive pass play percentage. He’s first in offensive scramble EPA, which means you got to keep him in the pocket. You got to be disciplined in your rush lanes. You cannot allow him to get out and use his legs to make some big plays, which I’m sure is going to happen a number of time on Sunday. And then seventh, he is an offensive and successful offensive play percentage. So, he’s been really good again this year. I don’t think he’s been the MVP. I I think that’s been Baker or Daniel Jones. We’re going to look at a quarterback having to be the MVP, which that’s basically what the Ward is. is who’s the best quarterback of the year the way Mahomes played recently. Uh but I’m not trying to slight Josh. The dude’s awesome, really good player and going to be somebody Carolina has to contain. They won’t stop him, but can you contain him? I know the old adage, the cliche there. Can they do it on Sunday to win this game? The number three, you got to force turnovers. Buffalo is not taking care of the ball, which last year, this is something they did really well between their by-week, and this is from Bill Barnwwell of ESPN.com. He put this in his column on Monday. Uh between their bye-week in November last year and the win over the Dolphins earlier this year, the Bills played 12 games, including playoffs, their offense turned the ball over exactly one time. That has never happened before. Nobody else in league history had had a stretch of 12 games with fewer than four turnovers on offense. And the team that pulled that off was last year’s Eagles, who who went on obviously to win a Super Bowl. Over the past three games, Buffalo has turned all over six times. Now, Josh Allen early in his career had a bunch of yolo balls uh that were interceptions. You watch some of the big games, even the playoffs, where he’s just making mistakes and trying to do too much. He’s almost turned the ball over a lot in those games. But that has been a narrative that’s kind of been brushed away uh the last couple of years, especially going back to last year, the way they took care of the football. But earlier this season, not necessarily all on Josh, obviously, it’s a team effort with all the turnovers that has kind of crept up. So, if that continues, that can give Carolina a chance to win. Now, the Panthers only have seven takeaways this season on defense. They are only ranked 24th in a havoc rate. That is interceptions, that’s forced fumbles, that’s tackles for loss, sacks, all of that. Negative plays. They have not forced a ton of negative plays this season. If they can force them on Sunday and get Buffalo behind the chains and also find a way to heat up Josh Allen, if that can force some turnovers, that’ll give them a chance to win this game. So, force turnovers, contain Josh Allen, and run the damn ball. That are the three keys to victory or those are the three keys to victory on Sunday for the Carolina Panthers. Got a final word and it’s the Panthers can win this game. We’ll talk about that here in just a moment on locked on Panthers. This episode is brought to you by Mazda’s Moving the Game Forward. For those who believe it’s not just about playing the game, it’s about redefining it. There are moments that do more than put points on the board. They move crowds, move culture, and keep moving the game forward. This week’s moment that moved the game forward is JC Horn’s two interceptions. Now, we talk about moments that do more than put points on the board. Well, JC’s moments took points off the board. In particular, his first one-handed interception in the end zone against the Jets. The play before if Tyrod Taylor just would had a good throw to Al Lazard. That’s a touchdown. And that is a result that is going to be in doubt for Carolina on Sunday against the Jets. Instead, JC on the next play gets the interception. Later on, as the offense is sputtering, not trying to end the game, JC makes another excellent interception. He was great and your best players have to be your best players. And JC Horn certainly was that last Sunday against the Jets. When you follow what moves you, the unexpected is only the beginning. And just like there’s more to every highlight, there’s more to a Mazda vehicle. Mazda, move and be moved. The Panthers can win this game on Sunday. Those are words I did not expect to utter heading into this matchup when the season began and hell when the schedule came out last January. I was not anticipating feeling the way I feel about this team heading into this game. And y’all know me by this point. The folks who have been around since I’ve been starting doing this back in March 2021 to the folks who’ve been listening for maybe the last year, last couple of months, you know me by now. I’m just not going to BS you and tell you things I do not believe, which a lot of times y’all might hate me for that cuz I’m not going to sit here and lie to you and tell you what you want to hear, but as far as this game goes, I truly believe the Panthers can win this game and like I feel good about it. Is it my hatred of the Buffalo Bills and of all the people from Buffalo who moved down to my beautiful city and just painted it in Buffalo sauce and blue cheese and carrots and celery? Maybe it’s that, maybe it is, maybe it’s just something more deep down internal, but I really when I look at it think that Carolina can win this game because of what they’ve done on the ground so far this season. And I know there’s a lot of concern about Chuba Hubard coming in there and that messing with the momentum that Rico Dattle has had as a lead back for those two weeks. I don’t think that is seriously a problem. I really don’t. I do think that they’re going to have success against Buffalo on the ground on Sunday. And I don’t think it really matters that Bryce Young’s not going to play. I think that Andy potentially could come in and open up some things offensively. And maybe that just gives Bryce a one week reset. I’m not saying he’s been playing bad. He has not been playing great so far this season. We went over this a little bit at the end of the weekly Wednesday mailbag this earlier this week. Some of the numbers offensively from Bryce haven’t been that great so far this season. Still think there’s way too much time left in the year to kind of bury him and talk about a new quarterback. I’m not saying that at all, but it’s a possibility that with Dalton out there that maybe we see more downfield throws and maybe we see a different offensive game plan. And both Bryce and Andy in the locker room on Thursday both talked about how the offense doesn’t really change depending upon who what quarterback’s in there. I do think the play calls will change a little bit because I just think that the trust that Dave Canow has in Andy Dalton, the guy that he continuously said last year was their starter and they were not focused on Bryce. I still think he has a little bit more confidence in Andy than he has in Bryce just based off of what we’ve seen in the past and some of the things we’ve seen so far this season and certainly the in the interceptions, the fumbles, the turnovers at a as a whole that we saw earlier in the year. Maybe has to do something with why we haven’t seen some of the downfield shots which we really haven’t seen period where it’s been Frank Reich, Thomas Brown, Dave Canal call the Blazer Brung. Haven’t seen a ton of those. Maybe we see more of those on Sunday. We’ll see. But I just think that offensively they match up really well against the Bills because what they do is run the ball. And hell, Dave top run the football when he first got here. It’s time to live by that. Do that on Sunday and you can absolutely win this football game. Defensively, we’ll find out just how good this defense is. There are numbers that are saying they are a top 10 defense. I don’t know if I believe that because again, the best quarterback they’ve played is Dak Prescott and they had a whale of a time trying to stop the pass when they only really had one receiver that could truly hurt you and that was George Pickkins and he had a career day. Now on Sunday, I like Keon Coleman. You know, that’s the guy I wanted to have here over XL. He’s been a fine player, but I think nothing really scares me offensively for what Buffalo has at receiver. Khalil Shakir is a good player and all of that, but man, that that offense goes as Josh Allen goes and that is the case here in Carolina. The offense really goes the way of the running backs and the running game as a whole. Buffalo, it’s all Josh. And if you can contain him and if you can at least one side of the field, JC, take away one of his receivers, like that gives you a really good chance of winning this football game. But you got to be able to stop the run. They’ve done a great job. Only allowed 81 yards last week against the Jets. and it was two weeks combined of 50 yards, 19 to Miami, 31 to Dallas. They did a great job against those teams. This is the best rushing attack that they have seen. It may be the best rushing attack in the NFL outside of Indianapolis. Jonathan Taylor and the Colts are having a great season so far with the way they’ve run the ball. So whether it’s Indie, Carolina, Buffalo, like those are top three teams right now when it comes to rushing and the Bills with James Cook with Josh Allen that poses a threat that Carolina hasn’t really seen this season. Yes, Atlanta obviously with Tyler Algier and also of course Bjan Robinson. Carolina was able to contain those guys. They can run the ball. That’s really a two back tandem that they’ve had to face off against. They have not faced off against a quarterback and yeah, Kyler Murray is one, but really when you’re looking at just how physically imposing Josh Allen is and how hard he is to bring down and the plays he’s been able to make, it’s a little different of a problem to solve on Sunday for the Panthers defense and the run game with the quarterback than it was back in week two in the desert against Kyler Murray and against Arizona in a game where really it’s only Kyler who had much of an impact on the ground. They’ve taken away running backs since week one and since that bust to Travis ET really since then they’ve been really good against the run and this will be the biggest test that they’ve had I believe all season long and really since week one when they struggle giving up 200 yards again on the ground in that loss to the Jags. So, if they can stop the run and really show that this defense has truly turned things around and Derrick Brown’s going to be a big part of that, of course, then um maybe maybe we can start uh thinking of bigger things for Carolina this season because a win here getting to five and three, no reason to think you can’t win next week in Green Bay aside from it being on the road and being Lambeau Field, but those are just those are just things. Are those are they factors? Of course, they’re going to be factors, but that’s all talk. You got to play between the lines and if you can beat Buffalo at home, no reason not to believe you can’t win the game next week in Green Bay. So this this is the measuring stick. This is the biggest home game that they have had of consequence, like true consequence since maybe when Cam came back, but even in that year, they’re sitting at five and five. There’s still time left to go. So I I don’t know. Maybe I would think even that Seattle game back in I want to say 2018 that might this may be the biggest game since then where you got to have it. Now they don’t have to have it and the season’s not over if they lose, but it’s going to be a big one. And I hope that everyone held on to their ticket. I hope that you can get in there that you can be wearing black and blue and you can be loud and not get drowned out by the Bills fans. Should be a fun Sunday inside Banker America Stadium for all Panther fans and really for the city of Charlotte. I I I joke a lot of it is truthfully how truly how I feel about Buffalo, but I joke about it. But it’s great for the city to have the amount of people who are going to be energetic energetic and excited about the game on Sunday and should be great for businesses around uptown throughout the city throughout the weekend. So can’t wait to get up there on Sunday afternoon for Panthers Bills week eight matchup. Big one for this organization, for Dave Canales, and for all who care about the Panthers. 1. Why do you keep talking about who is playing at qb? You understand the game and you keep talking about every chance you get. And if he wants to keep it in house then STFU about it. Nobody needs to know who is starting at qb except the panthers. Nobody cares who is starting except for the bills. So chill out:

  2. Julian we all know you suppose to root for the front of the jersey not the back..ok we payed chubba but if Rico is winning you play Rico it’s simple it’s not fickle

  3. Nobody has given up on Chubba!! It's just if he's playing well play him! Chubba will get right but Jesus until then play the guy who's rushing 5 yards a tote and is third in the league in rushing.

  4. they talked a week or 2 ago about how the running game works better with the QB under center but Bryces better throws come from shotgun, DALTON will do much better under center and play action will be much easier, confusing the defense as to run vs pass.

  5. Great podcast Julian 👍🏻, it’s a real shame that Bryce is going to miss the game tomorrow. Hopefully we can run the ball efficiently like we have been doing and our defense can make some plays. I’m just hoping we can compete and keep it close going into the 4th quarter 🙌🏻, Keep Pounding 🏈

  6. I don’t think fans are giving up on Chubba. Letting one of the RB’s warm up is important so if Rico can make it happen it will help us and Chuba by extending his career. I remember fans complaining about over using McCaffery.
