BREWERS POSTCAST: Brewers’ Bats Go COLD | Game 5 Awaits in Milwaukee in Winner-Take-All

This is the Brewers Post Cast, your instant game reaction for the Milwaukee Brewers, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. It’s going to all come down to Saturday afternoon at American Family Field. The Brewers losing game three and game four at Wrigley Field to the Cubs, including tonight’s ball game by final score of 620 to zero. Hello everyone. Welcome in to the Locked on Brewers postcast. My name is Brandon Snide. You can follow me on Twitter, Brandon Snide. Lots to get to on the show this evening. The Cubs, yes, you heard that at the beginning of it, forcing a game five in this one. a rough start for Freddy Peralta. We’ll talk about that. We’ll talk about the Brewers bullpen. We’ll talk about how this team is set up going forward into game five and who may get the start, who may not get the start. And uh pressure all on the Brewers now. Uh shifting from what was must-win games for the Cubs are now a must-win game for the Brewers and the Cubs on Saturday in game five. Real quickly here, friendly reminder, wherever you guys get audio podcast, remember you can get this program as well. Thank you for making Lockdown Brewers part of your day each and every day. And uh we’ll get to some of your thoughts, your reactions. I know there’s some of your frustrations. You got it. If you’re like me, uh not thrilled with the performance from our Milwaukee Brewers in Wrigleyfield in either one of these games. the Brewers with so many opportunities uh late uh in the uh in the game three game where they lost where they had guys on on base late in that game. They were unable to come through in that one. And tonight from start to finish, the Brewers did not look like they wanted to be in Chicago this evening at all. They lose the game six to nothing. We’ll get into all of that, but let’s begin with the scoring summary tonight brought to you by Rouiiet. And game time and Freddy Peralta getting the start for Milwaukee on the bump this evening. Taking the loss today. Not a good one for Freddy Peralta. And without further ado, unfortunately in this one, it begins our turning point in a six to nothing loss. Time to reveal where the game was won or lost. It’s the turning point right away for Freddy Peralta finding himself in a bit of a jam. A Nico her single, a Kyle Tucker walk. Boy, you can’t do the walks and the home runs together. They they both hurt you, but when you did do them together, you allow them to happen together. Bad things have happened. And that was the case for Freddy Peralta in the first inning. Ian Hap coming into tonight was hitting .095 in the postseason. Ian Hap with a absolute dart out to right field. Uh was an absolute no doubter from the second it left his bat. Gave the Cubs a three nothing advantage right away in the first. And Matthew Boyd on the other side of the hill for the Chicago Cubs. A completely different pitcher from what we saw in game one at American Family Field last weekend. Matthew Boyd shutting down the Brewers offense for four and two/3 in this one. just nothing offensively tonight for the Burst. A absolutely nothing. They had runners in scoring position. They left six guys on base. They were only 0 for four with runners in scoring position. As I mentioned, they had three hits on on the night. You are not going to win many games in any sport, certainly baseball, when you uh when you don’t have any offensive, you know, threat on the bases or or in the game whatsoever. Uh but the Cubs did this evening. And uh Matt Shaw also with a single in the six would bring home a run that would give the Cubs a four nothing advantage. And then a couple more home runs in the seventh inning from Kyle Tucker. You hope not to get him going. Certainly ahead of game five. And then Michael Bush, stop me if you’ve heard me talk about Michael Bush hitting a home run in this series. I believe it’s his fourth in the postseason. I think it’s his third against the Milwaukee Brewers uh in this series. Those two guys uh with each a solo shot there. Um, and that would round out the scoring for the Cubs. They would uh take that six nothing advantage and cruise to a game four victory. We mentioned Freddy Peralta for the Brewers and and and and and an interesting approach after Freddy Peralta. Trevor McIll would make an appearance out of the bullpen. He would struggle allowing a walk only going one third. Aaron Ashby for an inning and a third would come out. We we kind of seen him in bulk before Chad Patrick as well. and Robert Gasser getting the last two innings of this one. But it goes back to Freddy Peralta. It was an opportunity. I thought when it was first reported, I put it out on my Twitter account, Brandon Snide, that I didn’t love the Freddy Peralta getting the start in this one. I I just did not feel great about this game. I I don’t want to say Murf was was feeling the pressure and and obviously you want to win. You want to put your team in the best position to win. I just didn’t I didn’t love Freddy’s splits on the road at home. I didn’t love Freddy’s splits with four days of rest versus five days of rest. And I understand this is the playoffs. I understand you can’t prepare for a loss and needing a game five. But how much better would you have felt if the Brewers lost tonight six to nothing and you rolled out, you know, I don’t know, maybe Gasser, maybe a combination of of Ashby and and Chad Patrick, all three of those guys pitching tonight with Freddy available in game five at American Family Field. Now, certainly that’s not what the Brewers are preparing for. I know hindsight is 2020. I understand you don’t manage and prepare to lose a game. I just didn’t feel great about it. and and it’s it’s it you know it’s interesting with this Cubs team because Freddy for the most part has had some really good starts and had some not really good starts against this Cubs team, but there was something telling me it was one of those you know gut feelings that I just didn’t I didn’t like Freddy tonight out there on the mound and and it didn’t take more than a couple of pitches, couple of at bats for that to come to fruition with Ian Hap hitting the three-run home run and and that’s your turning point in the ball game because the Brewers wouldn’t muster up any threat throughout the course of this game whatsoever. Just a pitiful and pathetic performance from the Milwaukee Brewers offense. All sorts of out of whack today. Just all sorts of And really I I guess we’re going to do it and and I hate to do it, but I I guess I’m going to have to because I I do feel it. I don’t understand the Christian Yellish at the leadoff spot. I guess I just don’t really understand why that is a thing. Why that? I I understand Murphy talking about it in his pregame media availability that he wants him to get more at bats, but I I you just won games one and two with Jackson Turio at the leadoff spot. Jackson Turio prior to coming to Chicago was batting 574 at the leadoff spot to begin this series. I I guess I’m I’m a little confused on on it. And I’m not a a lineup guy. I told you guys this before. I I I don’t like to question the lineup changes and whatnot, but I don’t know. It feels like since that lineup kind of switched over and and things have changed. Bryce Terrain in the three hole today. Bryce Terrain’s been horrible at the plate. I’m sorry, Bryce Train in the cleanup spot. He was in the three hole yesterday. He’s been horrible. The bottom of the order getting nothing. You know, when when this offense gets going and when this offense is rolling, you’re getting production out of the bottom of your bottom of your lineup. So, it turns back over to those uh those high, you know, high money guys. you just you’re not get the first two games in Chicago that you just weren’t getting any production from the bottom of your order. Sal Frick, you know, had a hit this evening. He’s one of, you know, three two other guys to get a hit this evening, but uh just again, not a lineup guy. I don’t want to say, you know, it should be this or should be that. It just it was odd for me that you switched everything that seemed to have worked wonderfully in games one and two, then in game three, it was a completely different thing. and and we saw Lockage in there as well, which was another questionable move. But again, I’m not going to question it. You know, it it is what it is. It just feels like it’s one of those things where you kind of looking at it and you’re like, maybe that was like overthinking it. Maybe you were doing a little bit too much, trying to get a little too cute. I don’t know. We’ll see if the Brewers can uh can get it turned around for Saturday because it’s a do or die situation uh come Saturday in game five this series in the National League Divisional Series. all knotted up. Two games a piece as the Cubs get the six to nothing win at Wrigley Field. They hold serve in front of their home crowd and it things will turn back over to American Family Field for Saturday. Coming up after this, your thoughts, your reactions, our player of the game, and the things you’ll be talking about tomorrow after the Brewers fall to the Cubs for the second time at Wrigley Field. A 6 to nothing loss for our Milwaukee Brewers in game four of the National League Divisional Series. And this one from start to finish was over be before it really began. The Brewers is no threat whatsoever against the Chicago Cubs. And that brings us to our Locked On Brewers postcast player of the game. This is the locked on player of the game. Different pitcher at Wrigleyfield is Matthew Boyd. Unfortunately, tonight guys, uh you know, in game three, we found a way to give the the the locked on Brewers postcast player of the game to Jos Canana and Grant Anderson who held things down out of the bullpen. Nobody for Milwaukee deserving the uh the postcast player of the game, but Matthew Boyd today setting the tone for his Chicago Cubs team. four and two/3s, only allowing two hits. A completely different pitcher than what we saw last Saturday when he uh, you know, gave up all those runs and only recorded two outs in the first inning of game one of this series. And it’s not a surprise. He’s 12- one at Wrigley Field. Matthew Boyd does those things, you know, has done those things all season long in front of the home crowd at Wrigleyfield. So, I give a lot of credit to Matthew Boyd for completely locking up that Brewers offense and and and from start to finish in this one. He goes four and two/3s, strikes out six batters and again only allowing the two hits. The Brewers would finish with only three on the evening. So, also give a little bit of credit as well to uh the uh the Cubs bullpen as well once again coming in and shutting down the Brewers bats. A six to nothing loss. Series tied at two games apiece. I know Brewers fans aren’t feeling good after this one. This is what you’ll be talking about. We talked about pressure and I had kind of mentioned after game three, after the game three loss that the Brewers would be looking at, you know, facing a little bit of pressure going into game four and how things were going to kind of transition a little bit from where the Cubs, you know, had it to where now it’s going to be more so on the Brewers. And now after you the series is all tied up, uh, it’s all going to be on the shoulders of the Milwaukee Brewers. You went up in this series 2. You won both games at American Family Field. It was fun. 9 to3, 7 to four, whatever that final was. Things would be fine. You know, things were fun. You you thought they would be fine. You thought you could get at least one of these games in Chicago. the Cubs playing for their their their their lives for their season and the Brewers were were were in good shape pitching wise as well, bullpen wise as well. Teams up two and 0 in the best of five historically have won 90% of those series. So things were facing you were fac you were feeling pretty good if you’re a Bruce fan. That’s all that’s all changed. That has all changed because if you lose this game, and I know this is gonna sound hyperbolic, and I know a lot of people are going to come at me and say I’m crazy and I’m wrong and I’m an idiot and don’t put that pressure on them, you lose this series to the Cubs in game five Saturday at American Family Field. And I’m not feeling good about it. I’m not going to lie to you guys. I’m not going to sit here and get behind a mic and tell you you should feel good about a a a team where they had three hits and a and a in a potential clinching situation and couldn’t score a run against Matthew Boyd and in the Chicago bullpen uh Chicago Cubs bullpen. you lose this series against this Cubs team and and what had started to with a 20 series lead in best of five, it’ll be one of the it will be the worst loss in Brewers playoff history, but it’s going to be discussed as the worst loss in Wisconsin sports history in the postseason. And I we hope it doesn’t get to that point, right? I’m I’m just saying all that pressure now is on the Brewers to close this out. You have got to win on Saturday. you are you you got 97 wins throughout the course of the season. You built that lead uh in the National League Central. You built that league throughout the National League to have that number one overall seed and have homefield advantage and you have to take advantage of it on Saturday. I don’t really know exactly who’s going to be starting for either one of these teams. I’m sure we’re not going to know probably until tomorrow, maybe even until Saturday morning. Uh you know, when these guys get things kicked off. I believe that game’s got a 708 start Milwaukee time. So things are obviously still undecided, but this is going to have to be one of the biggest games that I can remember as a Brewer fan in quite some time. You go back to maybe game seven of the NLCS obviously and and what that game was, you know, for this team. Game three last year for the wild card was big, but this is big uh because you had early control of this series and you allowed it um to slip. The Brewers lose six to nothing. Your thoughts, your reactions. welcomed on the program, Jacob Everyday. I think we’ll find out quickly what this team is made of with their backs against the wall for real in game five. And it sets up wonderful. You know, again, you’re at home. You’re at American Family Field. You have the opportunity to uh to play in front of your home crowd. I’m sure Cubs fans are going to pack American Family Field now because they’re back in the series and they’re feeling good. Use that Game Time app, guys. Download the Game Time app. Use that code locked on MLB. Go get 20 bucks off your tickets if you’re a Brewers fan. Pack American Family Field Everyday. Cody, talk about a train coming off the tracks. Did they forget that this is the playoffs and you need to be pinpoint. I’m almost glad I worked Saturday night. Very pathetic performance out of game four. It was it was uh very uninspiring baseball from the Brewers today at their their appearances at the plate were were out of sorts. It it did not look anything like the team that had won 97 games. And there had been moments throughout the course of the year there was no fight when the Brewers went down three nothing. Did you think they were coming back in this one? I didn’t I just I didn’t I I mean I was I was preparing for this loss you guys in the fifth inning. Like I you know I I I just it didn’t they did not have any fight. They had no juice. They had no no energy. It just it didn’t feel like the vibes were right. It was a very weird performance today uh for the Brewers. Obviously when you lose 6 nothing feels good. James Murphy. Pat Murphy has made some poor starting pitching decisions the last two games. Again, I I just didn’t like the Freddy thing today. I I understand people are going to tell me he’s the best pitcher. It’s a closeout game. You got to go win. I don’t like his splits with the four day versus fiveday rest. I just I don’t like it. Um again, I understand why Murphy did it. I I don’t I don’t have an issue with the reasoning for it. You know, Freddy Peralta tells you he’s good to go. he’s good to go and you’re going to listen and you’re gonna you’re gonna be all in on him. And I understand that it again did not take long for for my feelings to come to unfortunately come to fruition in this one with the uh with the uh three-run home run from Ian Hapen again who has been hitting hor really hasn’t been hitting at all this series and 095 RA coming into this one. So it was not uh not a good start for Freddy Peralta. Charlie over on YouTube. Why can’t the things I want to happen ever happen? It can still happen. It can still happen. I know there’s a lot of negativity coming out of my mouth and and and the vibes I have right now currently or the lack thereof. I understand all of that and I apologize in advance. I’m I’m very disappointed in this Brewers team. I’m very upset. I I wear my emotions on my sleeve. I I’m a diehard Milwaukee Brewers fan. I do this show uh because I love talking about my favorite team and but more importantly I love cheering for my favorite team and when you have a chance to close out a team that I think we can all agree that we hate the most that we dislike the most that the manager for our team at one point said he could not win here, you know, hypothetically a and went to a team, you know, that is supposed to be our biggest rivals and and and you have a chance to close them out not once but twice at their home and you just failed. failed to show up. You failed to do the things that you’ve done all season long. And I’m just I’m disappointed in this Brewers team. I’m very disappointed uh in the performance obviously in game three. There was moments there that they had at least in that uh to come through. Uh but tonight was just it was pitiful. I mean it was it was absolutely pitiful tonight. Three hits. Three hits in a playoff game. It’s ridiculous. It’s it’s ridiculous. Glory Days Sports Consulting over on YouTube. McGill in the fifth was an interesting decision. Pitching wasn’t the 100% issue. It’s the non-consistent runners and scoring position hits. Those clutch hits haven’t been visible at Wrigley. 100% agree. McGill in the fifth was weird, too. The only thing I can think of is they just need they wanted him to come in for a quick work. I mean, the game at that point, I understand technically wasn’t out of hand, but the way the Brewers offense was going or the lack thereof, uh, it it felt like that certainly, but it was interesting to see Trevor McIll in that spot. But, uh, that also could have been something he just wanted to, uh, to get, um, Trevor McIll in a in a non high leverage situation. Get him back to, uh, you know, maybe feeling, uh, feeling better about that that flexer strain. Every day, Nick, get back to basics and fundamentals. Take your walks. Don’t swing out of the zone. Give the pitching run support. They can do it. God, I hope they can do it. Sounds like you’re almost talking yourself into it or you’re trying to talk yourself into it, Nick. And I completely I completely agree with you. It was very uncharacteristic for the Brewers. They had eight strikeouts today versus only taking four walks. That just doesn’t that that can’t happen. And that’s not the Brewer baseball, right? That’s not what we’ve seen all season long. That’s not what we’ve done, you know, uh to win 97 games and win the National League Central for the third year in a row and get the number one overall seed. Those are things that we haven’t been able to do, you know, that we have we haven’t done all year and now we’re, you know, we’re showing it against at the worst possible time you can imagine. Mick Mixster every day over on YouTube. You know what I would like in this series? A lead first. Yeah, the Cubs, although Mixster, the Cubs, they they get the win today. They did score first. It’s the first time it’s happened in the series in four games. Usually the team that scores first has lost until obviously this evening. and the Cubs scoring first and holding on for the victory. It all comes down to game five. Can the Brewers get it done? I am already nervous thinking about game five. My anxiety is already kicking in thinking about game five, but uh but again uh let’s see. Uh their backs are against the wall. Let’s see how they respond. The pressure, no doubt about it, is now all on Milwaukee. The series tied up at two apiece. That’ll do it for tonight’s show. Again, Brewers lose six nothing. in the NLDS. It’s a late night and you guys are all here hanging out with me. I greatly appreciate each and every one of you guys. Thank you. Thank you for making Locked on Brewers part of your day each and every day. Friendly reminder, wherever you guys get audio podcast, you can listen to the Locked On Brewers podcast as well. Apple, Google, Spotify, Amazon, wherever you guys get audio podcast, you can get this very program as well. And we will pick things back up on Saturday evening. a 708 Central time first pitch game five Brewers Cubs at American Family Field. I hope you’ll join me after the game. Hopefully we’ll be talking about the Brewers moving on to face the Dodgers in the NLCS. But as always, we’ve done it all year. We’re not going to change it now. It’s tough couple of losses at Wrigley Field. But win, lose, or draw, it is always go Brewers. Have a good one, everyone. See you.

The Milwaukee Brewers couldn’t get the bats going in Game 4, falling to the Cubs 6–0 at Wrigley Field. Freddy Peralta got the start but ran into trouble early, giving up a three-run homer in the first inning. From there, Milwaukee’s offense never found its rhythm. With Chicago’s win, the NLDS now shifts back to Milwaukee for a decisive Game 5 — winner moves on.

  1. One more thing, if we all think about it Murphy has been absolutely disastrous at picking the starting pitcher for every game of the series so far! Bringing in the rest of the pictures hasn't been that great either if you ask me. Now all the pressure is on the Brewers and Cubs are playing with house money!

  2. There are a lot of questionable moves that Murphy has made. The one I think that is the most egregious is the game 2 bullpen game. Why didn't he just start Priester, whom at home is a much better pitcher than on the road, in game 2 and Quintana in game 3? He used all those pitchers in game 2 and got the win, but didn't have any of them available when QP crapped the bed in game 3. So then what does Murph do? He burns 2 starting pitchers in one game by putting Quintana in. Now we are playing catch up for the rest of the series with this mismanaged pitching staff. Can anyone tell me if any other managers are using a bullpen lineup in the playoffs?! Like its a Sunday game during the regular season. Now I have no idea who is starting pitcher for game 5. And yes, too many lineup changes. We have had 4 different lead off hitters.

  3. Cubs fan here , you guys have home crowd on your side and I think that’s gonna be the downfall for us but lfg and see what happens

  4. Turang and Yelich both completely worthless. Yelich overpaid and unclutch. Turang just overrated. Doesn’t matter anyways, season ends on Saturday. 97 wins for nothing lmao.

  5. Another year another big choke for the Brewers in the playoffs!! Murphy is a total failure changing the line up that scored 16 runs in the first 2 games. If it ain't broke don't mess with it!! If they lose Saturday Murphy should be fired!

  6. Dead On Brandon. We are up 2 – 0 and Murph starts to mess with success. Yeli's hitting well, hit him 2 or 3. Turang has not been making any contact at all. Freddie is like 10 & 1 at Home. Plus Durbin, Frelick are not hitting at all (and Ortiz of course). But bringing in Lockeridge was downright asinine and has NEVER done a dmaned thing since we got him.

  7. Not to even bring up that we will have to listen to people saying that 91% of teams with 2 & 0 lead have won and all future talk shows bringing up the Brewers choke job.

  8. It's crazy Murphy put Yelich at leadoff and Turang at cleanup against a lefty starter. Seems he was thinking too much about potential matchups later in the game

  9. Got to win Saturday! The skeptical fan base has seen early playoff exits for this team. It won’t matter if they go 162-0 next year. The starters have been awful all series and the team has played from behind every game after the first inning. It’s momentum from the start. The winner Saturday will definitely have bragging rights. Plan to see plenty of Cub gear in Milwaukee for years if they lose.

  10. This team busted their ass for HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE! This game on Saturday is why it i is so important to get it. Joey needs to pull his bat out of his ass,,,lots of players need to step up on Saturday

  11. I’m a cubs fan not counting out the brewers game 5 at all… all the cubs got is taillion, brewers had a fresh mizz or Jose. But imo brewers got hot way way too early. They won like 17 of 20 games which made counsel concede the division. I remember hearing that and thinking if they go cold when and how low will their cold streak go.?

Even if the cubs or brewers win, dodgers are starting to look primed. Cubs either have to get early season hot or brewers will need 6 inning of great pitching to beat LA.

  12. Brewers magical season down to one more game. Will they find their Mojo in Milwaukee or will it be another underwhelming post season performance? What happened to Turang? He looks befuddled up there? And where is Monasterio? He was on fire in August. The coach seriously does not like him for some reason.

  13. What is wrong with Murphy over thinking everything? Whydid he switch yelich to leadoff when we were averaging 8 runs a game in the first 2 games? Makes ZERO sense. Lockridge? WTH

  14. I am posting this before Game so that I will not be guilty of 2nd guessing.
We should start Quintana for 2 or 3 innings, then bring on the Miz for 4. 2nd Choice is to start Patrick, then the Miz. I think Murph is leaning that way since Patrick only threw 4 pitched on Thursday.
Don't start the Miz, he gets too amped up,

  15. You can't manage with the intent of losing. Murphy went with his Ace on regular rest trying to close out the series. You gotta have the hits as well as the pitching.
As a Cubs fan, that has been the Cubs problem for big parts of the season. The starters have been solid, but their offense has been completely inconsistent. They score 11, 0, 1, 3, 2, 1, 14… You aren't going to win regularly with that type of inconsistency.
I haven't watched as much Brewers as I have Cubs, but the strength of the Brewers to me has been timely hitting. They have gotten the clutch hit when it was needed. Those hits are more difficult to get come playoff time.
Those 2 losses are not on Murphy IMO.

  16. 5. Bauers DH
    3. Yelli LF
    9. Monestario SS
    2. Churio CF
    7. Freilick RF
    8. Durbin 3B
    1. Turang 2B
    6. Vaughn 1B
    4. Contreras C

Best Lineup IMO but what do I know.
All I know is we need. To. Play. Bauers.

  17. Milwaukee closes it out. Fighting for home field in the regular season will pay off tonight. That is, if Milwaukee fans come out determined to give their team energy start to finish. If you sit on your hands, after watching how rabid Cubs fans were in game 6, home field is wasted. Quintana could give you 3. Miz 2-3. Uribe is fresh. The best line up needs to be out there tonight.
    Brewers will deliver tonight.
