Macklin Celebrini Is DOMINATING The NHL | Is The Sharks Offense Actually GOOD?
Mosabrini is going to be a superstar and the Sharks offense might actually be good. What else did we learn this week? You’re Locked on Sharks, your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. Hello, welcome to Locked On Sharks, the premier hockey podcast covering your favorite team in the Bay Area. My name is JD Young, caretaker at the Reef, also the co-host of Locked On NHL. And if you want to be an everyday, all you have to do just follow along wherever you get podcast. And of course, you can watch on YouTube as well. And today we’re going to be uh going back and looking at what we learned from the past week of San Jose Sharks hockey uh including trade rumors that are already starting um why Melbourne is going to be a superstar and the offense might actually be okayish. So uh before we get to all that do want to let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Download the FanDuel app now by visiting fanuel.com and win $300 in bonus bets if your first $5 bet wins. So, um we’re going to start with with Mac and Celebrity because uh Mac celebrity is always worth starting with because uh last time I checked Mac and Celebrity pretty good at hockey. Um and I think the biggest thing that we learned from this past week of San Jose Sharks hockey is um Celebrity is going to be a superstar. like one of the best players, if not the best player in the NHL at some point. Uh he is like on track to become that player and this is why you lost all those games in that 23 24 season. Uh is to land yourself a player of this caliber, a a a franchise cornerstone that everything else is built upon. and Celbrini at the age of 19 is already entering into stardom uh territory uh in the NHL and it’s going to be a matter of time until he’s a superstar and again just a matter of time until he is one of the best players in the NHL and he’s already you could argue knocking on the door right now. Uh Celrini was named the NHL’s first star of the week this week. Uh he had in the four games this week he had five goals and five assists. So he had 10 points in four games as these Sharks won their first two games of the season the last week. Um, Celbrrini is doing things right now that we have seen uh among very rarified air in the NHL uh with his points and his scoring and and just the the style of play that he plays and that he is uh going to start to drag the Sharks to more wins as we literally saw uh on Sunday night with his overtime winner. Uh, I mean, both the wins are a lot to do with celebrating literally dragging this Sharks team to relevance, right? The overtime winner when when the Sharks are pinned for three and a half minutes in their own zone. Uh, Ekkin gets off the ice, celebrating [Music] the primary assist on the game winner in overtime. the celebrity dragging this franchise towards relevance and towards uh starting to win more games here. But um some of the rarified air that that Celabbrini is entering in. So um his he has 15 points to start the season. Uh he is third as I’m recording this right now on on Monday afternoon. He is third in the NHL in points. uh which is one just ridiculous number to to think about, right? Uh only Eel and uh Nick Schmolz have more and they’re both tied at 16. So Celebrity has 15, they have 16. Like Nelander, Capri off, like McKinnon all have less points than Celebrity. And yes, I know you had a five-point game in there, but it’s not like these other players haven’t put up these types of performances as well. Like Celebrity is definitely on a heater right now, but this this is uh again very rarified air where where Mlin Celibbrini is right now. Uh he is one of only this is uh from the NHL only one of four teenagers in NHL history who have posted as many points to their first nine games of a given campaign. Uh so the names mentioned in this uh Barry Church uh pretty good player uh he had uh six-time champion uh six goals, 12 assists. Uh he had 18 points in nine games with the Islanders in 7576. Uh Wayne Gretzky, uh that guy I think you’ve probably heard of, pretty good. Uh he had five goals, 11 assists for 16 points uh with Edmonton in 8081. Sydney Crosby pretty good player too also with uh matching celebrating six goals, nine assists in 15 games in his 2006 2007 season. Uh and then Elias Patterson also uh he had nine goals, six assists in 15 games the 2018 2019 Vancouver Conucks. So you are I mean three of those names are are like hall of fame some of the greatest to ever play type of players and I know Elias Person’s uh has has up and ups and downs recently but like Crosby Gretzky uh Troier are are among the NHL elites in the history of the game and our little baby celebrini is in this type of era, right? Even his five-point game, you know, uh one of a handful of players to do it multiple times as a teenager. Uh I know Gretzky had it like five times, but still um what Cros or what’s Crosby what Celerini is doing is not normal for a teenager. And like Will Smith who’s had an excellent start to his career, right? And Michael Misa who’s who’s had, you know, a solid start to his career as well. like those are typical starts or or you know good starts. What Celebrity is doing is just not normal. Uh and there’s no reason to think like that he’s not just going to get better and better and and turn into this franchise pillar. uh you know like talking to to uh Seth the host of Locked on Wild um he you know like on his show he he said celebrating me with the best player in the NHL like I want to get season tickets to the Sharks and I don’t even live there. Like that’s the type of praise you’re getting for for this guy here who is um just scratching the surface of what he’s going to be as a professional. Like he hasn’t even, you know, like he’s he’s solid defensively. He’s not even like good or great defensively. Like wait until he figures that part of the game out. Wait till he’s doing that type of stuff as well to go with the scoring. like Celebrini is is a special special player that the Sharks uh have and if he continues to do what he is doing and the Sharks continue to build successfully around him um this is going to be one of the best teams of the 2030s. Like I have no doubt about the way that like as long as Celebrating is here and continues to to be what we expect celebrating to be here, the Sharks team is going to be an absolute force force up in the coming seasons. And uh hopefully hopefully Celbrini can uh bring to San Jose the one thing that we’ve been missing for the past 35 years and that’s a Stanley Cup. But uh he is well on his way to to being that guy for for the Sharks and and delivering uh right the prince that was promised from Macon Celebrity here and all those losses they don’t matter anymore right uh because you you you did the hard part you you landed the franchise star uh and Minelbrini is going to he is going to be the envy of every other GM uh in the NHL because uh that he is that good. So, because Min Celebrin is pretty good, I think the Sharks offense is going to be good as well, and we’ve seen plenty of flashes of it being good, uh, despite not even really getting key contributions from other players. So, uh, we’re going to dig into why I think the Sharks offense is going to be good this year. And we’ve seen enough from it to that I can, uh, I think I can declare it’s going to be pretty good. So, we’ll get to that here in just one second. Let’s be honest. Most of us can’t even name our financial accounts, let alone what we’re worth. Between 401ks, savings, investments, it’s easy to lose track. That can mean leaving money on the table. Uh we’ll continue to cover the best Sharks pro uh prospects. Uh and we’ll have some Barracuda coverage, interviews, all that fun stuff. Uh so make sure you follow along wherever you get podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well. So, um, I think this Sharks offense is going to be pretty good. Now, do I think it’s like a top 10 offense or anything like that? No. Do I think it’s like middle of of the NHL? Yes. Which is a massive improvement on this Sharks team that was the worst in the NHL last year when it came to uh scoring goals. So, big jump. That’s a big jump for for this team. And right now they are currently um they’re 14th in the NHL at 3.22 goals four per game. Uh just as a reminder uh last year they were dead last uh in the NHL where they scored 2.54 goals per game. So if they finish at this 3.22 uh or if they’re anywhere that would put them actually last year the the 3.22 would put them at 11th in the NHL. So, I don’t expect them to be that high. I still think this is probably like a 17th, 18th, 19th uh in in the NHL, but I think we’ve seen uh enough signs from the Sharks offense that it can be middle of the pack, which would be good for the Sharks. Uh because one, we know this team can’t play a lick of defense right now. So, you’re Durant trying to outscore a lot of their problems. and it’s come with mixed results this year and and you know they they’ve had some opportunities that they would like to you know there’s a very easy world where this team is four you know has four wins right now uh if they can close if they can hold on a lead to the Vegas Gold Knights and they can hold on lead to the Ducks this team you know would easily have four wins here uh because of uh one because of their offense right and very much you can’t defend for 60 minutes you have to score goals etc., etc. But, um, a big reason why the Sharks offense is been so good has been the power play. And the power play as of right now, uh, is seventh in the NHL at 28.1%. This is before the Suns play tonight, uh, and stuff like, and this is is a big reason to why we’ve seen success. And this was something I pointed to this off season as I think the Sharks power play can be good because you’re bringing back so many players and you have much better depth, right? Um Celbrini, Ekkan, Smith to Foley. Uh you know this, as we’ve talked about before, this is the first time in in what feels like forever where you’re kind of bringing the same group of of a majority of the same group of people back. And yes, I know Clingberg hasn’t been there. Orlab’s been kind of filling in right there as well. You’ve had, you know, Liller Grin on the second unit, Sam Dickinson get a little bit of run here and there as well, but um the the main tenants right of Celibbrini Smith to Foley and Eklan, those have been the guys for the Sharks. And I think that’s a big reason why you’re seeing this power play really take a big step this year is because you’re just having chemistry, right? And yes, uh, having 71, uh, who we’ve just spent 10 minutes talking about why he’s going to be a superstar, uh, that helps a lot. But I do think like this power play can really kind of prop up the offense for for a bit while you still kind of figure things out at five on five. And the Sharks do have to figure some stuff out here at five on five, right? They’re they’re still getting outshot heavily. They’re still giving up too many shots as well. But I I think though if you point to, you know, some reasons why I think the this five on five offense can get better is um you you’re still kind of missing some contributions from guys and and you will have gotten a lot of contributions from from unexpected players, right? The bottom six has been much better this year. Uh you know, God has been a big addition. We still don’t know what his injury news is, right? uh you’ve gotten two goals from Ryan Reeves, which I said I thought if you got two goals from Ryan Reeves all summer, I was gonna all season I would have taken the under on that right from Reeves. Um like do I think Reeves goal scoring is sustainable? Probably not, but we’ll take them right now. Um you know like you have gotten I think a much better bottom six performance than you know a lot of us myself included expected uh from it. But you still have players who are expected to be big-time pieces that are still kind of getting into the groove of it, right? And Misa, who who’s quietly put up production, you know, he got his first goal. He’s had a couple of assists elsewhere, but really hasn’t been like a big-time part of the offense yet as they continue to kind of ease him into it. like he’s gonna have that Will Smith moment last year, right, where everything just kind of clicks for for Misa and you can kind of take the training wheels off and let him get going. And once he gets going and potentially earns that second line center position, I think that’s when you’re going to see the offense really shift into another gear. And this is no fault to Wenberg. like Wenberg has been given tough tough uh opportun or like he’s been you know having to defend against the team other team’s best centers and like he’s been put in a lot of uh positions there and that Ekkan Wenberg you know whether it’s Skinner Kersev whoever it is like that that line has been asked to play a lot of of tough minutes here to allow the Celibbrini line to kind of drive the offense but but once Misa gets in there. Then you’re going to have two big lines, right? A Skinner, Misa, uh, Ekkan line. And then you’re going to have that Graph Wenberg Godette line. And then that third line can kind of be your shutdown line, but still provide scoring pop between Godette and Graph. And we’ve seen Graph have some big opportunities here, just not able to cash in. Uh, I think that’s when the Sherks offense is really going to take off and you’re going to start to see them really kind of balance out some of the uh, scoring opportunities and the shots and stuff like that. So, I get it’s a bit of a red flag that they’re getting out shot and that they’re still, you know, uh, still generating a lot of goals without maybe kind of having some of the analytics to back it up. But, I think that’s going to come like that’s going to come at some point here. And I mean, even like this offense this year, they already have three goals or three games this year where they have at least six goals. Last year, they had six games all season. All right. Three in in your first nine games. So, I think this this offense is going to probably outproduce expectations because the power play is going to continue to prop it up. And I like I said, I think this power play can be good and especially um you know once hopefully Clingberg gets back and hopefully soon or whatever they kind of do there at least you you have those main four guys and I think that the power play is also deeper right I mean the second unit with Misa and Graph and Godette whenever he’s healthy and Wenberg like they have enough players that they can kind of patch together a solid uh second unit and it’s not like the Barkley Goodros and Luke Cundans of the is having getting power play time. So, and we’re still, you know, also waiting for for Sam Dickinson to kind of really get into it. And um you know, he still doesn’t have any points yet. Not that I don’t think he I think he’s played well so far for the most part in his early start of his career is like those points are going to come for Dickinson. Like he scored way too many points at London for him to be shut out. And he’s too good offensively for him to kind of be shut out uh forever. And once Dickinson starts chipping in a little bit more here and there, like I do think you’re gonna see this offense be sustainable and be good. So, and and like start to kind of be more of an even offensive when it comes to shots and generating shots attempts and and stuff like that. So, the fact that they’re getting goals right now, uh, without actually maybe, you know, kind of quote unquote earning them, I bit of a I understand it’s a bit of a red flag, but you can see the path to why the offense, I think, is going to get better as this stuff kind of starts to even out with some players hopefully taking on bigger roles here sooner rather than later. So, um, we’re going to finish, uh, talking about the last thing we learned is that the trade rumors are already starting around the San Jose Sharks. Uh, so we’ll get to that here in just one second. Get local analysis on a national scale. Find NHL game night on locked on NHL on YouTube or wherever you get podcast. So, uh, we’re already starting to get the trade rumors. As we know, the Sharks are probably going to be, uh, sellers, uh, at the deadline. And of course, the the kind of the same names continue, uh, to pop up here and there as well because, you know, we all know who the names are, right? It’s guys who the Sharks brought in either on one-year deals or guys who are contracts are getting ready to expire. All that fun stuff. Man, Carson Wentz out. Uh, poor Carson Wentz. What a career. Um, anyway, but all right, let’s start with with Alex Wenberg, who it sounds like the Vancouver Conucks are really doing their homework on him as a potential piece to add um to uh as this team wants to try to kind of make their playoffs, etc., etc. Um, but Wenberg, Frank Cervali, uh, was, I guess, on his show about this, uh, middle of last week talking about how you’ve got Wenberg and, you know, they look at guys like Kodet, etc., etc., but, um, Wenberg could be a a big-time piece for them. And Wenberg does make a lot of sense for the Sharks to potentially trade, especially if you have if Michael Misa continues to develop as we expect Michael Misa to to be um and if he can hopefully again get the training wheels off here sometime soon and kind of start to take on a bigger role. Wenberg is a potential player that could be on the move and we’ve seen with Kurv and Godette both and Deandria who Dandria I think’s had a really good start to the season all guys who can play center kind of slide into that 3C role. Um because I think that’s where God is is specifically should be on on a good team as like a third line center. um it would make god or it would make winberg a a more kind of movable piece for the Sharks, right? And with his contract, uh you know, it’s at $5 million. The Sharks do have a retention slot and they can kind of bump that down to two and a half million. I think that’s a really, you know, easy piece for a lot of teams to try to kind of fit in uh as a player like Alex Wenberg. Um, and teams overpay for guys like Alex Wenberg all the time. Uh, when I was doing kind of my season previews, I, you know, did the on on my website, The Reef, I was wrote about, uh, like Wenberg and like what type of, uh, you know, kind of what other players of his ilk bring back, and it’s usually way more than you would expect. Scott Lington, first round pick. uh Borch and Yanni Gourd um I know has a package deal but 2026 first round pick 2027’s first round pickling last year first round pick Alex Wenberg 2024 second round pick when he got traded from uh the Rangers or traded to the Rangers from the Kraken like Wenberg’s going to get you back a a a nice piece because teams always are looking for defensively responsible centers who can also chip in scoring and I know Wenberg hasn’t had the scoring this year but it’s easy to point to a team like the Shark Sharks and just be like, it’s the Sharks, right? Uh that’s why he’s not scoring. And if we get him in our system, he’ll probably score uh a little bit more here. So, um we’ll see like if if you’re using a retention slot, like he’s the guy because I think it’ll help to drive uh drive the price up for uh the return at least for for Lilrin or not for Ligrin, sorry, we’re gonna talk here in a second. But um like these are two player like that’s a player who I think the Sharks should be very much interested in uh trying to trade sometime before the deadline. But a lot of it I think really h is based on what Michael Misa does and then that kind of opens the door for a guy like Phil Biset or Zacho Sopchuk or whomever uh to potentially win that third line center position coming out of camp next year. So, or you can be a try to go add another piece during free agency next year. So, um the other ones here, uh of course, uh this is from the fourth period. Mario Ferraro and Timothy Ligrin. Uh the Sharks are believed to be uh willing to take trade calls on Ferraro and Ligrin. Again, two players who are both in the last year of their deals. Um, and with the Sharks having so many defenseman again, we we’ll have to see kind of the injuries, right? We know, we don’t know the extent of how long Let’s going to be out. Um, Clayberg should be back here soon. We don’t know have an update on Muka Matan, but that’s that’s three guys right there. Um, you had to to grab a guy like Iorio off of waiverss here. And you’re still going to have to, if you want to keep Sam Dickinson longterm, you’re still going to have to make a roster move elsewhere to trim a contract. So that way you can have both Misa and Dickinson on the roster uh without having to like if you want to have them when their ELC’s actually kick in here after their ninth game. So um it would make sense, right? And a guy like Logan who the Sharks traded for around this time last year, right? Maybe you look at a team that is dealing with a little bit of injuries um and willing to kind of take on one of these players because I I do think the Sharks should try to resign one. Uh that way you’re not going into free agency next year with like you’d have Or Dickinson and Muk Mullan like on the roster. Expect Ken Yone to to kind of to make a push, right? And maybe Pole Camp. Um, but you’re you still want to I think have just some more veteran guys around. And I think like if I’m trying to pick between the two, I would rather have Lilligan because one uh I think Ferraro’s next contract is going to be uh I think it’s projected like six years, $5 million a year. Like $30 million for Mario Ferraro is a lot of money. Like I I get Mario Ferraro. Uh that’s a lot of money for for Mario Ferraru in my opinion. Um and Lilan I think could be I think he’s better at getting the puck out of the zone. Uh and I think he could be he’s a little bit more versatile uh type of defenseman. Um and I don’t think he’s going to cost as much as Mario Ferrar for as long. So I would be willing to keep Lilrin. Um but we’ll see what the Sharks do here. Um, as again, I mean, teams are, I think, are already starting to kind of, as we’ve hit the kind of the 10ame mark, I think a lot of teams are starting to kind of assess what they have and see where they need to try to make upgrades at. And we know Mike Greer likes to make trades. So, I think there will be a defenseman moved at some point here uh to try to make way for Sam Dickinson. So, um, but that’s going to be it for me today. We’ll be back tomorrow. Uh, we’ll have, of course, have a preview as the Sharks host LA Kings. So, we’ll get ready for that game. Hopefully, we’ll have some updates on injuries and stuff. So, there’ll be a 10-minute YouTube uh exclusive video on that about uh early afternoon for that. Uh and then of course we’ll have a rec reaction to the uh Sharks Kings game as well. So, make sure you follow along. You get podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well. Follow the show on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and on Tik Tok at locked on Sharks. Follow me on Twitter and Blue Skyfry Hole. Uh until tomorrow. Bye friends.

Best part of Vancouver getting Wennberg is We'll toss in Leddy for free 😅
As for Wennberg. Rumors are the wings are shopping Berggren.
I was interested in seeing what Celebrini was based on what I saw in the NHL. First overall picks sometimes impress, sometimes elite, and occasional disappoint. Not based on opinions of scouts, etc. They're pretty good at what they do, but they don;t always get it right.
What I saw last season was shocking. The scouts vastly undersold Celebrini. At age 18, to be that good, was bonkers. Yes, his season was compromised by too much ice time and probably too many games for an 18-year-old. But when rested, he was so impressive.
I attribute his 'slow start' to whatever ailed him that caused him to miss the preseason. But by the time the Isles game rolled around, it was clear Mack was back. He's on the brink of elite.
His play needs to become more refined. Example, he's wired to always pushes the pace — but there are times it needs to be dialed back. Still, its fun to watch and the more support the rest of the team provides, the tougher it'll be to slow Macklin. That may take another year or two, but when it happens, it'll be a game changer.
Vancouver is cap challenged, and given there's only 1 retention spot, so I'd hope to get full value from it. I know we'd get the spot back in July. Still, if Wennberg gets the Sharks a 2027 or even 2028 first (with some restrictions), gotta take that deal.
I'm along the lines of Wennberg (w/retention if that's what it takes) + SJS 2nd rounder for 1st + 2nd, knowing their 2nd would be later in the round than ours.
