“He’s Going To Miss Some Time” | Lindy Ruff On Tyson Kozak Injury Update | Buffalo Sabres
Lindy, the report on Kak. What what you have so far? He’s going to miss some time. Um, still don’t know the exact number, but uh it’s at least a week and could be more. He was just starting to hit his stride, wasn’t he? Yeah, playing really well for us, skating well. You know, got in on the scoring. Uh I thought his inside play, his penalty killing. Um really thought uh speedwise it it was evident and his physicality was good in the game. What have you liked about Josh Don? I mean, he stayed long at camp. He got right back up. I mean, uh, you know, physicality, hanging on to pucks down low. Uh, you know, he fits the element of playing on that fourth line. Uh, can kill penalties, too. So, you know, we I I like what he did for us last year. I thought he came into camp, he even skated better than the previous camp. So, he’s done a lot of good things. Is Bryson right or you going to stay with Mets? Uh, staying with Mets. you’ve had such a run of injuries here and you guys have played well these four games. Do you kind of just shake your head at how every game it seems like somebody else is coming up with something? Yeah, you know, the we have had a you know, we’ve had a tough run. Uh the good part is we you know, we’re slowly getting some people back so it’s kind of countering uh the people going out. Uh, but you got to, you know, you look around the league, there’s been a lot of, you look a lot of different teams. There’s been a lot of injuries. You know, we probably piled up close to the most. Uh, but you got to focus on what you have. Being here, you’re not going to get the matchups you want. Is that going to make things different than maybe yesterday’s game or doesn’t it really matter all that much? Uh, you know, I think matchups do have an effect. Um, I think, uh, yesterday some awareness hurt us. even when we did get the matchups, our awareness has to be better. Do you feel like, you know, you mentioned before the season, the injuries were kind of that adversity that might teach you a little bit about what you have character and culture-wise? What do you feel like you’ve noticed maybe in the first couple weeks of the season in that regard? Well, I think we’ve uh what I’ve noticed is other guys have stepped it up. Um, you know, in in Norris is absent. Again, Kik has stepped in and this really started to find his game. Um, you look at a guy like Kak who stepped in and was really starting to find his game. So, yeah, it’s another guy’s opportunity. I think, uh, you know, the ice time goes up for other players and they usually relish that opportunity to to be a bigger part of the team. How do you keep guys heads up when you know guys are going to get out of the lineup when it’s such a kind of regularity? Uh, you don’t spend much time on it. you just really spend time on the guys you have. Um, you know, I I think it’s it’s something that teams deal with. You you have to focus on the players that are in the lineup. I I don’t think anybody’s sitting around there feeling sorry for us. We’re not feeling sorry for ourselves. Uh it’s just we know how we need to play and if you know we’re we’ve lost some important pieces. Uh we’ve made some adjustments. Those adjustments you know seem to have worked and we’re going to just you got to keep working at it with How happy were you to uh get done with us in time to see the nine run inning. Yeah, fantastic. I almost missed the bus actually. Uh but what a baseball game. What a baseball game, Lindy. With it being less than 24 hours in between games, will shorter shifts really be key in what you’re going to talk to? Shorter shifts are very important. Puck management and time management. Um you know, we gave up a couple big opportunities on changes. you know, you want to win hockey games, you want to be a better road team, manage your time and manage the puck better. You still feel like maybe you’re waiting to see the the best version of Brazen here early in the season? Yeah, you know, there there’s a lot of things uh as a coach you consider and I, you know, I I I take a look at how tough the summer was for first and foremost. Uh he’ll he’ll find his game. He’s he isn’t quite there yet. I understand that. I think um the young man has dealt with a lot. Uh he’s given us everything he’s got and he’s going to continue to give her everything he’s got and he’s going to keep getting better. T last year I remember he started first five games nothing and then he scored five games in a row. Well, he got a goal finally. Do you see maybe a heater in his future? Does he tend to be streaky like that? I think every goal scorer has that potential. You know, you can miss a few and then all of a sudden you can go five or six in a row. Uh I thought he skated really well. That line really skated well. Um when you’re in on when he’s in on, you know, three or four chances a night, he’s going to score.
