>Hired first as a rookie ball pitching coach in 2016, Murphy ascended through the Astros’ hierarchy to become the organization’s minor-league pitching coordinator in 2019, during which he worked with Houston’s cadre of young, Latin American pitchers.
>
>Murphy, who is bilingual, often made trips to the Dominican Republic and elsewhere in the winter to check in on the likes of Framber Valdez, Cristian Javier and Luis Garcia.
>
>Murphy joined the Astros’ major-league coaching staff prior to the 2021 season as an assistant pitching coach. Upon Strom’s departure after 2021, Murphy was elevated to pitching coach alongside Miller.
>
>In the four subsequent seasons combined (2022-2025), Houston’s pitching staff boasted baseball’s lowest ERA and second-highest strikeouts per nine innings. According to FanGraphs, Astros pitchers accumulated 75.3 wins above replacement while Miller and Murphy worked together. Only the Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies’ staffs accrued more.
This is worse than it seems
It has to be for more money id guess, because who would willingly go to the pirates organization for anything other than a significant amount of more money?
Skenes is not making out of his rookie contract without TJ
Miller isn’t going anywhere, so Murphy wasn’t gonna get a promotion. I don’t blame him for going for that pay raise.
It sucks, but it was gonna happen at some point.
High performing coach that deserved a promotion that we didn’t have, congrats and thank you for your service
Pirates already have fantastic pitching development. This is a win win for Murphy and a smart move. Great development will mean he should have an easier time coaching their pitchers and that will lead to a better resume for him
