Dave Canales gives final Panthers’ update before Jets game | Carolina Panthers

Beautiful day. Beautiful opportunity for the guys uh get back out there and uh get ready to, you know, have our nice walk through tomorrow. Get on a plane and uh take this show on the road. Guys are really focused and they’re excited about this opportunity. Does that mean he was good to go on Sunday? Yes, he is. Yeah, he looked great. Uh had a solid week of practice. We’ll have Chuba and Rico back there, Trevor. Um and be able to just utilize both of those guys to help the Panthers. Coach, you talked about next man up um on the outside linebacker uh who shifts into in princley’s place as the number four income come or or perhaps boogie? Yeah, they’re both available. They’ve both been practicing and ready for that role. So excited for those guys to get an opportunity to help us as well. Uh DJ Johnson next week. Could he be a quick fix? I know he visited the Packers on Tuesday, but I’m not sure that he’s signed. Could be. Could be. Uh you know, we’re going to look at some guys and uh take all options into consideration. How much of how much of the whole Chuba Rico thing right now is sort of trial and error in terms of figuring out what will work in terms of utilizing both guys in a game plan? Oh, just counting on both guys to execute when they’re in there and uh it allows me to just call the next play. I don’t have to really overthink, you know, who’s in the game as far as what we want to execute in the run game and the pass game. So, um just excited about the opportunity to have both guys help us. Is a situation where, you know, you you’ll start out with a plan and then you’ll ride the hotter hand. Is that what you think will happen? We’ll see you on Sunday. Dave, what happened with Damian? Yeah, just a shoulder injury, chest. We weren’t sure exactly what that what that was, but we did the full work up, did imaging and all that. And so, we’ll just take a look at him again today, this afternoon, uh, tomorrow, and it’ll be dayto-day really to make a decision whether he can help us on Sunday. You know, whether he’ll make the trip. Um, he’ll make the trip certainly, but you know, whether his what his availability is on Sunday, we’ll kind of have to make that a game time decision. We’d love to have Doo out there. We got to do the best thing for him, best thing for the team. Dave, if the if Damen can’t go, that’ll mean that y’all have had six different starting combinations along the offensive line this year. How does that how does that impact the chemistry of the line and your offense as a whole? It’s a real compliment to the preparation of this group and guys that keep stepping in and doing the job well. Um, and a tribute to the coaches to uh prepare the guys and be ready and um that’s that’s what it requires in this league. You got to be focused and locked in. And sometimes guys don’t get all the reps in the week and something may happen in the week, you know, where they have to be prepared to do that. And so it calls on that focus. It’s a great reminder for the whole group, you know, to just keep working as if you’re going to have to play and uh to have that kind of mentality is really important for us. Is there any possibility that Brandon Walton could be activated to the 53? I I think his practice squad standard elevations are up um and he has played at that guard position before. So, is it is there any possibility that he could be activated this week? There’s a possibility. Um, and we also have uh we also have Nick Samk who we got from uh Baltimore and then Jay Kurhan who came from Arizona. So, guys that we’ve been preparing and Brandon got in there too. He got took some reps this week as well. So, we have all the guys prepared and ready to go and we’ll make the best decision going forward. What about Corbett potentially playing guard? Yeah, that’s a great one. You know, he’s got a lot of flexibility. was his his first position really was playing guard, you know, so he gives us an opportunity to be able to put him in there um and play some guard and then you also have another center on game day. So, um another possibility there on punt return. Are you comfortable with Trevor back in as as the top option? Yeah, absolutely. We’re counting on Trevor um to field those balls and make sure that we’re taking advantage of the of all the hidden yardage in special teams, right? Catching it is the first point. Let’s make sure we do that. And then he’s a special runner and we’re looking forward to him taking taking advantage of those opportunities. Definitely going to be active Sunday. Yes, Coker will be up and and he’s ready to go. He had a great week. So, we’re looking forward to him being up on Sunday. Will he also field punts? Possibly the the the safe returner. Who’s that? He could be. Yeah, he’s been practicing it all through the spring, all through camp. So, he could be a logo punt type of guy. Um but right now, we want to give Trevor the opportunity to touch the ball and make an impact for our team. Dave, uh, it’s team hasn’t won on the road yet. Uh, Bryce is, um, had his share of struggles on the road. Is there a sense of, hey, we’re playing really good football? Like, let’s just get this, let’s just get this over with, like our first win this season on the road. Uh, we look at every game as the as great opportunities, as championship opportunities, and I don’t want the guys focus to shift on anything extra. If we’re giving extra attention, that means we weren’t giving enough attention before. That can’t be the approach. The approach is all these are so important for us. And the challenge, the opportunity for us is to take the focus and process and the preparation and make it come alive. I do know one thing that’s really important when you’re on the road is the energy comes from us. It’s it’s about poise. It’s about resilience. It’s about that focus that it requires to go series in and series out, make adjustments, and just keep playing ball. You don’t have the fans at your back. It’s always got to come from us first, from the coaches and the players working together, communicating together. So, we have a great opportunity to do that this week. Understand, we got to ask the question. I mean, have you made a decision who will start at running back or who will get the bulk of carries? We have. And all I’ll say is both guys will help us and we’ll make sure that happens by the end of the game. And you had said this week you were going to look at kind of how y’all did things on the road. Are you going to make any changes with the operations at all? Yeah, just some subtle tweaks, some things that we talked about um collectively, Jeff Brown and I um talking to other staff members who have been around a long time and I just think it’s worth competing. It’s worth finding and trying to find another edge, a way to get the guys comfortable. Um making it try to feel as close to home as possible, you know, and I just, you know, I can’t help but think about some of the teams and the challenges that they face. You know, you talk about some of the the the teams around the league who play on Monday night, Sunday night, Thursday night, and their routine gets screwed up all the time, but it’s the ability to focus. It’s the it’s the ability to prepare in the week in different modes, not just when you’re on the road, you know, in a normal, you know, playing Sunday to Sunday, which has been our rhythm. So, um, this this we have to be able to just take our process, trust that it works, and then go and execute. What are a couple of those tweaks? Uh, I’ll keep that in house. Um, but just just some stuff to look at and and uh stuff that I’ve talked to the players about also and just being prepared for some little subtle changes that may, you know, put us in more of our comfort zone. Um, just like we do at home [Music]

  1. So many of the fans here hate on hubbard but hes good and having 2 backs play equal touches is going to help everyone out including the backs so they dont get injured

  2. Panther fans, stop with this rhetoric that Chuba is buns. Chuba worked his ass of to get the RB1 and has rightfully deserved it – dont be so quick to forget his walk off TD last season and grinding with the panthers since he was drafted. Rico is looking for a RB1 contract and position in the league, he is gone next season in my opinion. He took advantage of the 2 games but remember, he was avg 2 yards a carry prior and we had Corbett in NOT CADE MAYS WHO IS DEFINITIVELY BETTER RUN BLOCKER! They were also both bottom run defense, there was already an expectation to run over 100 yards. I'm in no doubt if he stays they can be a two headed demon! Time will tell! 🚂🚂🇨🇦🇨🇦💙🖤 KEEP POUNDING!!

  3. I don't like that he said he didn't have to worry about what back is in the game when he calls plays, because Rico is much better in the pass game than Chuba is. I would hope Canales would see this and take it into account when play calling.

  4. COACH look at how DeAngelo Williams and Jonthan Stewart were used!!! It was a great use of both of their talents and both had 1000 yrd seasons!!!
