5 Backup Quarterback Options for the Minnesota Vikings, Post-Carson Wentz

[Music] What’s going on Jeromes? So with the unfortunate news that quarterback Carson Wentz is undergoing season ending shoulder surgery and being placed on injured reserve even though JJ McCarthy is set to be quarterback one yet again. Uh it would have been nice to have a veteran quart a veteran backup quarterback like uh Carson Wentz. Uh someone who the coaching staff obviously trusts even obviously trust with one arm and Max Brosmer the bro show has been quarterback to you last couple of weeks. Do does the coaching staff fully trust him? I think he would they would have played him. Uh but I think he’ll be perfectly fine. But the Vikings should look to add another veteran body to the quarterback room. Uh whether it just be on the practice squad or whatever. So, the rules here, uh, low to no cost of acquisition. Even though the Vikings are set up pretty good in terms of draft capital in 2026, especially with, uh, those, uh, comp picks, I I I don’t see the Vikings spending anything more than say like a six round pick. E, even if that, uh, in terms of bringing in a backup quarterback, because first off, teams are not going to trade their backup quarterbacks. You know, this they see all the injuries across the league and maybe the second most valuable player on a team is your quarterback, too, right? So teams, so like the Vikings won’t be able to trade for Nick Mullins, who’s backing up Trevor Lawrence, frankly, is better than Trevor Lawrence. Uh, also, you know, the quarterbacks are going to be quarterback three, whether he’s on the practice squad or 53. So that that’s where we’re at. So numero one, Brett Ripen ass, right? So Ripen, who’s spent a year plus with the Vikings, couple of camps, currently on the Colts practice squad. So you think Brett Ripen’s like, “Please, please add me to the 53.” or he’s like, “Leave me on the Colts practice squad and then I’ll get a ring maybe.” Uh, but someone who uh knows the broadstrokes of the offense, someone who can make a decent, competent, veteran backup, uh, very good in the quarterback room as well, uh, does make some sense there. Number two, Desmond Ritter. So, Ritter, uh, right after the JJ McCarthy injury was on the practice squad for about two and a half weeks. uh the former third round pick out of Cincinnati, a former starter with the with with the Falcons, but I don’t know, you know, some of the offense. Also, we got to talk about this. So, as someone who drinks a lot a lot of coffee myself, I you know, have to use the whitening toothpaste and and also do do some stuff and some things and things and some stuff, but bruh bro. Number three, Jameus. So, I I don’t know if the Giants would give up Jamus even though he’s clearly quarterback three uh in New York. You Russ is the backup. I would prefer Jamus over Russ anyway because you would say that, you know, Russ is probably the safer option, but also Russ has just been bad before Jackson Dark took over. So, I say if you’re going to be bad, just be entertaining. And Jameus Winston is a lot like Nick Mullins. Someone’s going to score four touchdowns today. I don’t know which team. Uh, next up, number number four, Anthony Richardson. So, this one technically can’t happen because Richardson is on injury reserve. Now, you can trade a player on injured reserve, but they have to be in their 21-day window. Uh, Richardson, who pregame week six snapped himself in the eye with with one of those warm-up bands and had to go on IR, had to get eye surgery, and he he won’t be able to be placed on 21day window coming back from IR until after the trade deadline. But this one really is more about the future because I I feel like Anthony Richardson is going to be the next student in the Kevin McConnell Center for quarterbacks who can’t throw going to want to learn how to do other stuff good too, right? Because I feel like Richardson just has physical attributes. I I I think the Colts are going to give up on him that they’re going to roll with Danny Dimes here very soon. So, couple problems here. So, number one, acquiring him, I don’t think it would be a lot for draft capital, but also his contract. It’s pretty big. rookie wage scale, yes, but your number three overall pick, it’s pretty sizable. Lastly, number five, Tanakill, you know, just another veteran warm body. The Vikings could have gone down the Tanakill road earlier is between like him and Flacco and then the Vikings went with Wentz. So, there you go. Anyways, uh like we said, Bromer I I think firmly should be quarterback too, especially at this stage of the year where Bromer had full training camp, full off season, full couple weeks as the quarterback, too, where he’s been a snap away.   3. Told ya not keeping Daniel Jones was a big mistake. KOC could have given Jones the opportunity to compete for QB1. He didnt. KOC instead was all in on JJ this year without playing a single game. Jones was QB2.
    Leave Brosmer as QB2. There is no hope for an SB this year. And we'll hope for the best with JJ against Detroit.

  6. There are so many problems that need addressing. Get the cheapest QB3 out there and focus on getting thru season and building for next year.
    Unless a miracle happens.

  7. Ridder or Tannehil. No trades, we still haven't recovered from all the second, third, fourth round picks speilman and now Kwesi have traded away the past six years.

  18. I dont understand the JJ hate already. Hes played 2 games. Had 3 TDs and a win in one without Darrisaw and Addison. The Falcons game was almost all on the oline being devestated. And every young QB has had terrible games. Patience is a virtue people.

  19. KOC shd roll with Brosmer as QB2 and whoever they pick up for QB3 should be cheap to sign or trade for. Jameis would be fun at least. If we get to QB3 surely things have already imploded, so why not the fun option?

  22. JJ is 1 and Bro is 2. I don't care who they get for three as long as they give up basically nothing for it. Practice squad guy, or anybody sitting as free agent. If they cannot win with JJ the season is over (if not already) and the last thing they need is to have another QB they might want to play at the end of the season.

  26. Case Keenum? Not too many good pickens out there, just go with JJ, season's pretty much over anyway, it will take a miracle to beat the Lions and then trying to overcome 3-5 is rough. Just tank and try to get a better Oline in the draft next year?

  28. This fan base don’t deserve JJ or Brosmer or anyone. Two games in and JJ is hurt because we can’t pass protect and everyone is screaming bust. Now Wentz is out for the season because same reasons. JJ is just going to get hurt again because the problem is still there.

  33. Get the cheapest bargain bin guy that's out there, maybe a couple of them. KOC will have two guys he can allow to get the snot pounded out of them if necessary. Maybe JJMc will be ready next year….

With the way how bad the O-Line is this season I believe there will be another record broken for the franchise this season which would be the number of different starting quarterbacks in a given season. The record is 4 which was took place only 2 seasons ago in 2023 (Cousins, Jaren Hall, Josh Dobbs, and Nick Mullens). With the current O-Line in shambles they might break that record before the first game against the greasy, grimy Packers.

  38. I still think the biggest loss of the offseason wasn’t Darnold or jones, but nick mullens. Dude has a lot of experience in KOCs system and JJ mentioned mullens was helping him last year

  42. I hope they stick with Max at QB2, but knowing KO, he'll bring in old boring RypienAss because he's scared Max will tear it up if JJ gets hurt again.
