Rich Eisen: What the 3-5 Washington Commanders Must Do to Salvage Their Season

Let’s talk Washington Commanders a little bit here. They’re in trouble. I was mentioning about how deep in trouble that they are because how deep the NFC is. You’ve got the 51-1 Green Bay Packers and then you look at the rest of the NFC standings and there are a host of 6-2 and 5-2 teams that are right there in positions two through six. The ners at 5 and3 and the commanders at 3 and5 are currently in 13th place in conference and Jaden Daniels can’t stay healthy and nor can Terry McLaren. I mean that’s what happens right when you hold out. I mean uh this may be an oversimplification. You’re 30, you’re holding out. You got a quad injury that knocks you out for a month. Then you come back and make some great plays and boom, all of a sudden the quad injury crops up again. He says he’s dayto-day right now, which doesn’t sound great. Their next game is against Seattle and that is 100% on NBC at home. Must win territory. You cannot lose to the Seattle Seahawks if you are going to have a wildcard route to the playoffs. That’s your route. I’ll use that way to say the word. Okay, that’s your route to the playoffs because the Eagles are sitting there at six and two and the way you’re playing, you’re not you’re not beating the Eagles the two times that you see them in the last three games of the season wrapped around a a trip to as you can see with the Washington Commanders. Uh got Dallas coming in. Those are the last three games of the year. So, you’ve got to beat Seattle. You cannot not have a tie break situation there. So, beating Seattle would be huge. Then you’re four and five and you can maybe make some hay with some other games that are somewhat winnable. Home for Miami. Um, not home, you’re in Spain against Miami. Giants, you can take care of them maybe. Got Denver. There’s some tough games ahead. You’re three and five. got to win this game against Seattle. Certainly, if your offense is sputtering, I understand Daniels is out. Um, but the 10, the seven points, the fewest scored under Dan Quinn, who had this to say after the game. And did we leave a lot of opportunities out there tonight and you cannot leave that many chances out there and expect to win uh especially against this team, not capitalize on the turnovers, not winning our fourth downs. They did. Um it was great to see us getting in some of the takeaways. Um you know that’s been an emphasis of what we’ve been hitting on. But uh you know leaving here you cannot leave that many opportunities out there and walk away from this place with a win. I guess the some of the positives. Vladimore came up with his first interception as a commander. They’ve been waiting on that. Bobby Wagner is still Bobby Friaking Wagner. How about this one? He became the 11th player who’s intercepted both Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes. I mean, that’s a first ballot hall of famer when he hangs it up. I’ve already stated my case about Bobby, but the run game disappeared last night. Bill Crosky, Merritt, nice to meet you. Uh, nine carries for 25 rushing yards. That’s his fewest amount in his rookie season. Mariota led the Commanders in rushing. I mean, they they started well. And the interception that Mariota had when it went right off of Debo’s hands, they they were marching down the field. The first 15 scripted looked beautiful. Too many mistakes and now they’re in they’re in they’re in a hole. You’re three and five. And let’s get this correct. Let me hold it closer here. You’re freaking f one and four in conference. They have to win this game against Seattle. It’s must win to fall to 3-6 and 1-5 in conference and no longer now have a tiebreak against Seattle, which might not win its division, but be good enough to be a wild card team, this is it. You want to make the playoffs, you want to follow up last year’s remarkable run to the uh NFC Championship game with your unicorn of a quarterback, well, that unicorn’s got to stay healthy. You got to still win games. And Sunday night is must win territory in week nine. And if it’s not, you’re three and six. And um and then you’ve got games against Denver and Detroit and two against Philadelphia and one against Dallas still to go. That is not the position you want to be in. Certainly when you’re not playing like last year when you could have won a lot of those games against the elite competition, they’re not looking elite at all. They are what they are, which is a three and five team that makes too many mistakes and has a quarterback that is not staying healthy enough for him for whatever reason. Hey, you made it all the way to the end. Thanks for that. Check us out every single day streaming live on Disney Plus and the ESPN app 12 to 3 Eastern.

  1. The defense has been a liability all season, even last night against the chiefs in the second half. We’re the oldest team in the league, and we barely have draft picks for the 2026 draft because we traded some of those for Lattimore, Tunsil, and Deebo (who may not be on the team next year). Adam Peters and Dan Quinn were too complacent in the off-season and didn’t improve in areas what would help Jayden. I’m hoping it’s not another season where we win a bunch of games late and miss the playoffs altogether. We’ve been 3-6 before and made the playoffs a few times in the last 20 years or so.

  2. If anyone looked at the schedule at the beginning of the year and made an honest assessment, they would have seen the Washingtons headed for a seven win season.

Daniels is never going to be healthy again; he’s too skinny and wants to run the ball too much. Washington continues to overpay washed free agents, which is honestly just on brand for them, and the one guy who wanted too much money (McLaurin) is never going to live up to that contract.

  3. Let’s be honest, JD5 actually had pretty good numbers. The Preseason Practices and Training was spotty. He was dealing with injured and missing weapons. We stayed healthy last Season. JD5 started every game even with a rib injury. Can’t simplify and more complex situation. JD5 is still JD5. He is just missing a healthy team.

  4. Rich…I enjoy the clips (of your show) on YT. Jayden, unfortunately, looks to be a clone of RGIII…Seen this movie before…Ugh…He injury prone and too small to run as often as he does…Their offensive line also stinks! QB’s are always under pressure. Team is too old and slow. They have as much chance at making postseason as you do running a sub 5.75 second 40 😉 It just ain’t happening brother. Peace.

  5. Folks who have followed football for decades, and understand how difficult it is when your weapons on both sides of the ball are injured and missing, know they are not toast. When they have healthy starters for the first this Season, then we will see what kind of team they are, They made the Chiefs and Mahomes look bad that first half. When everyone is healthy and on the field, we will make teams look bad in the second half too.

  6. Our focus should not be getting to the playoffs. Even if we get there what are we gonna do? This team is old and lacks overall team speed, trade what you can and get more picks. Last yr was fun but we MUST turn the page. Injuries have derailed this season. Accept it and move on. It’s ok.
