Ben Johnson on Week 8 game vs. Baltimore Ravens | Chicago Bears
Here we go. So, a number of guys that didn’t make it through the through the end of that one. Uh Dom Robinson had an ankle. Shamar Turner had a knee. Luther Burton had a concussion. And then, uh OZ, we’re still taking a look at his knee right there. So, um that’s what we got for injuries. In terms of the game, um give Baltimore a lot of credit. You know, they came out and they played a physical brand of football just like you would expect. Um, you know, they were hungry, they were determined, and, uh, truth be told, I expected a little bit more out of our squad to to counter that on up. So, we fell short. Um, you know, it’s our first game in a while, uh, really all season that we didn’t have a takeaway. Um, and so when that happens, you you really got to play a clean game and and, uh, we didn’t. You know, we’re double digits in penalties once again. We’re not scoring in the red zone. um you know, we couldn’t couldn’t quite get off the field as often as we’d like on defense. So, they had some good drives. Uh they I think time of possession wise they they did a nice job uh controlling the game and uh like I said, we we fell short, but um our guys, we’re going to we’re going to get this thing cleaned up. I know uh I know they understand how important it is that that we play cleaner as a team and we complement each phase uh better than what we did today. And so that’ll be our mission here this week. Go ahead and open it up. And offensively with the inconsistency, what’s most urgent to you right now in getting that side of the ball hum? Yeah. Uh, you know, I think you see flashes of um some explosive plays and some really good things happening. Um, but the the penalties to me is what stands out first and foremost. You know, we still have some of the the pre- snap issues. Um, there’s occasional not getting lined up quite right. There’s occasional not uh not getting the motion quite right. And so that stuff does it adds up and it and it hurts us. We we get away with it occasionally, but um it’s just not the way you win in this league. And so I I think uh you know I I really put on the leaders there in that locker room to to get this get this ship going the right direction in that regard. Us coaches, we’ve been pounding that drum now for a while and uh we haven’t gotten the results we wanted. So it’s it’s on the leaders here on this team to to uh get us right. What was your overview of the end of the first half with the intentional grounding and then you guys had to kind of scramble to get the the kickoff there to end? Yeah, I thought I thought we had a chance there for points uh before half. Um we we had a good good opportunity to do that and uh the intentional grounding certainly didn’t help. Um, and so now we’re in a position third and long with no timeouts where uh we know if it’s a clock running and uh we’re short of the line of gain that that we’ll need to get our hurricane unit out there, our field goal team out there real quick. So I thought the execution of all that was was nice, but um that’s a really long field goal and so it’s a low percentage deal. Uh something that we would like to avoid. So that that intentional grounding certainly hurt us. Did the Ravens and Huntley do anything that you might not have expected or was did they just do it well and it was tough to defend? Yeah, you know, I thought I thought uh I thought Coach Monin always does a great job just schematically um mixing things up and and like I said before, they play a physical brand of football and so that showed up. That offensive line um was getting after it and uh you know, I thought our defensive line, it was quite a battle there throughout the game. you know, um, we were intent on not letting 22 get started. Um, I thought for the most part we did a pretty good job of that, but then, you know, Huntley hurt us with both his arm and his legs. You know, we we let him, uh, get some big ones on the ground and then he he threw some accurate balls there in the air. And so, um, I think at one point he was like 12 or 13 or something like that coming out of halftime. So, um, yeah, he he played really well and and we didn’t do enough to affect him. Ben, what was your vantage point on the interception that Caleb threw there? Um, yeah, I I didn’t quite see it. I’ll have to check it out on film just one more time. Um, just in my mind, uh, there might have been another option that we could have gotten gotten to. Any sense of what happened on the last three plays of the game? Obviously, you get down there, it’s a desperate situation, but you’ve got a a completion short of the goal line, a quarterback sneak, and then a fourth down play. Yeah, I don’t I don’t like my my call on the quarterback sneak. I I could have gotten to something better there. Um, but yeah, I mean, we have plays set up to to go tempo down there and and uh I I probably didn’t do enough job in that that department. Did the uh participation saga with Lamar Jackson, what was your reaction to that both yesterday and and as it unfolded? Yeah. Uh we we always uh prepare for we like I said early in the week, we were preparing for Lamar and then um you know, when we found out that he wasn’t playing, then you know, we we get ready for the next guy. Uh Kyler went on IR yesterday. What exactly happened with him throughout the week? How long term is is this for him? Yeah, we’re hoping it’s going to be of the short-term variety, so we should be able to get him back. But yeah, it’s another soft tissue u injury that we’re dealing with. Thank you.

Drake Maye>Caleb and it’s not even close.
Confident in this coaching staff. I fear we have a Ryan Leaf situation.
We got us going to red zone and Caleb also gotta do better
im a big caleb fan, and he just needs to play better. it is literally that simple
What crazy to me is that Ben being this great coach which I do think that he is doesn’t coach Caleb to his strength in attributes, and if you are truly a great coach you have e to get uncomfortable by coaching to that player’s strengths, and when you get the QB that can do what you want in your system then you coach to your strengths!!! Not really Caleb’s fault for this; more on coaching than anything and y’all Bear fans I hope y’all realize this reality!!
Might be a dumb question…. When everyone says Caleb "needs to play better" what does that mean? Are we talking numbers ? Results? Love to hear everyone's take.
Overpaid clown. Never had a head coaching experience asking for 10 million a year contract.
Lets go detroit lions booooooo bears
The Bears could have possessed one of the best offenses in the league have they not fired Shane Waldron. All they had to do is fixed the O-line for him. We saw last year when the Bears protected Caleb Williams against the Jaguars and the Panthers. Shane Waldron's offense put up over 30 pts easily.
Firing Shane Waldron was the Bear's downfall. All he needed was a solid O-line that can block. The Bears offense would have ascended to the next level like they did against the Panthers and the Jaguars.
Ben Johnson is a joke. Hired out of media pressure.
Rex Ryan hands down would have been the best hire for the Bears. He took the lowly Jets to the playoff with pretty much little talents built around the team.
Think we need a vet QB
I think the symptom is Caleb not playing well. I think the problem is not being fully comfortable with the offense. At least I hope so because that can be fixed with more reps like Coach said previously.
More tight end running seam routes.
Ben Johnson and Dennis Allen get a pass because they have done a great job with a poorly constructed roster by our GM who did not bother to do his homework on all the QB's and then proceeds to avoid following the Andy Reid formula of sitting out the QB in his rookie year.
What is going on with all of the penalties that are killing drives ? Players have to hold each other accountable .
Last I looked Caleb does not play defense, they were pretty bad letting Huntley own them
The sneak should’ve been good
Caleb needs to go
media needs to question hightower. Seemed like every kickoff they were getting to the 40
I sit and watch this offense as the Lions ran it and wonder what Justin Fields could have done with it.
A top athlete with 5 years of NFL experience. SMH
Make it a priority to get the TEs involved. Caleb needs to get rid of the ball faster and go through his reads faster. If he cant do the job. Bench him. Start Bagent. Bears cant afford to give winable games away. Its not rocket science.
I see the same things from Justin to Caleb. I used to scream at the TV at fields. Throw the ball! Nothing! Caleb is the same way. Watch jets last win, Justin threw the ball. Fake NFL
