Not trying to rag on the Mammoth – they are playing incredible. Just noticed this while I was watching the replay and figured newer hockey fans might find it interesting.
This is a complete defensive breakdown. 5 guys looking at where the puck is (4 of which are below the goal line), not even thinking about where it might go next.
This was Schmidt(3) or Stenlund’s(1) guy, sitting WIDE open in the most dangerous place in the slot.
Tanev(4) just finished delivering a hit to the far-side D, forcing him to dump the puck deep.
Marino(2) is doing what he should be. He was trying to gain control of the puck caroming off the end boards.
You could argue that O’Brien(5) could have had picked this up, but he is at least thinking about heading towards his defensive zone assignment, should the deep Oilers forward play the puck back to the near side D.
Not good. This is how they blew the lead.
Edit: Re-watched the play. Marino doing was doing his frickin best.

Happened again like 30 seconds later, too. Not a great defensive showing after 3 games in 4 nights 😫
100% supportive of this message. I think they were tired/done being on the road. They’ve been home for 1 week since the season began, it’ll be good to have until Sunday off and have a breather before another road trip.
Thank you for this analysis! As a newer fan of the game (well, on and off since 2018), and having never played hockey myself, it’s nice to see a breakdown like this. The game is so rapid and fast paced, it’s hard to really notice why plays work or don’t work in the heat of the moment so screen grabs like your post are very helpful.
Tbf looks like they are waiting for a breakout in that scenario. O’Brien heading up the ice for an outlet pass. No one would really be expecting a dump in front of the goal, although I didn’t watch it I don’t see how that was anything but an unexpected steal behind the net.
Same thing happens in a lot of sports, especially when players are tired.
