The NBA Just Made a HUGE Mistake..
The NBA just made a huge mistake as the Pelicans dropped their home opener against the San Antonio Spurs in overtime last night. And I’mma give you details on what that big mistake was and also give you a recap on what I saw last night at the Smoothie King Center inside this edition of Pelicans Digest. What’s good with it y’all? It’s your people Melo the MIC back once again inside Pelicans Digest. Does my voice sound weird? I was screaming and yelling last night. I was at the BL I was in the Smoothie King Center with my fellow Bales fans for the home opener and it was a great time, man. And uh once again, thank you so much to everybody uh that came up to me during the game and was showing me love and just saying, “Hey, we watched the channel. We love it. Thank you so much for what you do. Thank you for subscribing and liking Pelicans Digest.” Go ahead, hit that subscribe button if you haven’t done it yet. Like this channel, share with your fellow POS fans. Uh, and also get the best analysis, opinions, and more from a real bells fan who’s actually in the building at the games watching the game, taking notes. This is what I do right here on Bellicus Digest. This Bells talking about those Bells. And last night, close match up, man. The Bells dropped another close one against the San Antonio Spurs. game that again I said that a team that is not only stacked with you know with Victor Myama and uh also with uh Castle backto back rookie of the years on that squad uh hell’s dropped uh 120 to 116 and listen man you know when you’re in the heat of the moment of the game last night you won’t fire everybody and then when you got to sit down and look back at game tape and and and analyze some things you you start to see that you can feel good about this team as long as they learn from these mistakes now. Okay? As long as they learn from these mistakes now because the next time you play these guys, there should be no excuses, especially you are at full strength. Of course, the big weaknesses with this team continues to be that you have no big play. You have no bigs. Uh and and and uh San Antonio took full advantage last night as Luke Cornet looked like a damn all-star on side of winama as they ran a double big lineup most of the game. Uh and the Pelicans had to counter that with an undersized lineup for the most part. But there were still some good things to take away from this game. And also the NBA also screwed us as well. And I’m going to give you the details of what the huge mistake was that they made last night. Uh but first let’s get into the particulars of the game last night. Zion Williamson again, another monster night. It’s so good to have him back healthy and we hope he continues to maintains this, man. 27 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists. Uh again, we know Zion’s going to do his numbers, man. You know, that’s why I don’t talk too heavy about him, you know. I don’t talk too heavy about him. Continues to uh uh but the continues to have some issues with rebounding, you know, and that’s fine, but I also would like to see him work on that mid-range. If he can get that mid-range floater that he’s been working on down, that’s going to be dangerous, man. That’s going to be a great weapon in my opinion for his for his arsenal. That way, he can limit the the wear and tear and trying to fight and beg for fouls. That’s another thing that that that gets that happens with Zion. They never call fouls on Zion. They never Zion could get slapped, choked, punched. Don’t matter. They’re not going to call it. They’re not going to call it. They act like he’s Shaquille O’Neal. you should be able to take a big man go, you know, and that’s frustrating as well to have to deal with if he can perfect that sort of mid-range in the key uh shot that could save him some wear and tear and also, you know, probably send him to the line some more. You never know. Uh Trey Murphy also had a great bounceback game. 24 points, 10 rebounds, five assists as well. Can’t listen and we said no need to worry about Trey. Uh while he was the problem that we lost that game uh the first night against Memphis, his bounce back was incredible last night. It was great to see that back in action. It felt really good. Uh but I I ain’t going to complain about that. I’m I was watching some video last night that I took and I and I started to watch it closely and I broke it down and I was kind of frustrated by what I saw cuz there are moments where I see Trey not really hustling. He’s like jogging over like on back cuts. He’s jogging over there and her maybe having trouble with the ball or something like that when he’s bring it up the court and he can’t get open or something like that and Trey would just jog over if he would to hustle over to the I’m not going to get into particulars on that. I’m just glad Trey Murphy bounced back. I’m just glad Trey Murphy bounced back. Another thing, another takeaway you can feel good about is that Derek Queen is progressing well despite the fact that they are throwing this kid out into the fire in the fire position. That’s why Lucette was able to cook a lot of the game. That’s why I love it. And also, uh, get a lot of lob pass. Uh, and let me say this and I’mma say this. One of the reasons why you’re if you don’t have any bigs, one of the reasons why the bells are getting so scored on so easily in the paint. And when you and it’s not because you don’t have any bigs, it’s because your guards are not doing their job as far as stopping them up and getting them before they come into the lane. And we’re going to talk about that in a few as well. We’re going to get into that as well. But DQ, Derek Queen is slowly getting there as he gets thrown into the fire. And he’s progressing very well. He’s progressing very well in my opinion. Queen finished tonight with 15 points, six rebounds, one assist, and just one turnover. Just one turnover. Massive improvement for a prospect like Queen who is expected to come into the league as a below average rim protector. He looked excellent defensively last night. He was getting high contest and uh doing a great job as a weak side help defender which led to him recording one steal and two blocks. Yes, absolutely. Absolutely. I did see that last night. Now, of course, there were moments where, you know, he would get lost or they couldn’t execute the screening role properly because he wasn’t screening properly. And that’s something that he’s going to continue to learn. He’s going to that’s something that continue to learn. Also, that quote was courtesy of Chris Lambert from Pelicans the the brief. I’m sorry I didn’t credit you, but big shout out to Chris Lambert. Uh, but his offense is there. His offensive game is is like I said is why you would have to try to start letting this kid play now because, you know, his offensive game is getting better. Plus, he didn’t turn over the ball. Uh, but just one time. That’s very good, very encouraging to see Derek Queen as he continues to develop through the fire. Jeremiah had a had a sort of not too much of a good night, but it was still a decent night for him as well. So, no rookies from the No, no worries for me from these rookies. All right. No worries for me from these rookies. But last night, again, another situation presented itself where if you have at least one of your starting five contributing on the offense, you could probably still win this game. In the game against Memphis, it was Trey Murphy. He wasn’t contributing that much that we lost this game. Last night, Herb Jones laid a total goose egg on us in the in the scoring column. zero points, not a single point scored. He had seven rebounds. He had a couple of assists, but he couldn’t not he couldn’t get it going. Can I please get a night where all five of my Pelican starters are are are scoring well. It’s always she’s like four going to do right, one one’s going to have it all tonight, you know, and so don’t get upset when it comes early in the season that you know we you know who uh Trey and Zion have a good night and and Herb just couldn’t score couldn’t get nothing going man and again if again if you get your if you have Herb score at least what his normal rate would be at maybe even 10 15 20 points at least maybe 10 even 10 we could still win this game possibly, you know. Uh so again, again, nothing nothing I ain’t gonna complain too much about about last night, but this team, but I will point out that this team continues to struggle on transition defense. I don’t know what it is with this team getting back down the court, but they still continue to struggle with transition defense, getting back, and also like I said before, the guard defense. one of the reasons why these bigs are able to attack or maybe they’re able to score so many of the points and also Castle was getting past just about everybody and being able to score. Pardon my uh my boils py I’m almost well by the way. Um it’s um it’s because the guards are failing to stop these guys before they get into the paint. Once they drive around one of the guards, they you’re s the big’s got to step up and try to help whoever that big is at that five at that moment. Be it Zion, be it Queen, whoever they meant. But at the five got to move up into the bank to try to stop this guy. And now you don’t open up that back door cutting for the bigs. And there and and San Antonio was exploiting that all night long. And you couldn’t put it on the bigs because you don’t have any bigs. You can’t say, “Oh, it’s the big fault. It’s whoever’s that big at the hot.” You can’t say that cuz you don’t have anybody that really plays true five on this court right now outside of Queen. So, you got to deal with that. If you’re going to deal with that, you got to find a way to sort of hide the fact that you don’t have a big especially as these teams continue to roll out these two big lineups on us. Uh especially in these upcoming games. Um but you know, as normal, which I stalled last night as well, you can’t touch Victor Winyama. Yeah, he’s 74, 75, but you if you touch him, he’s you’re gonna get a whistle. Okay, let’s be clear here. You’re gonna get a whistle if you touch him. And I saw this game just getting just officiated terribly last night. It was infuriating to see this this officiating last night. And you know, wake up this morning, just not even an hour ago, the NBA came out with its last twominute report and they admitted that they made a huge mistake in overtime last night against the Pelicans. Here’s what’s happened. One of the plays in overtime, uh, in one of the plays in overtime, uh, the Spurs inbounded the ball to Harrison Barnes. Uh now this is coming off the play where Jeremiah Vier on the second or last play of the game uh Jeremiah Vier stole the ball got a quick two points. Then the Spurs inbounded the ball to Harrison Barnes but Jordan Pool was able to come around and smack the ball off his leg and out of bounds. Instead of it being the Pelicans ball down by two with just about two seconds left, the officials called a foul on B to send Barnes to the free throw line effectively ending the game. Okay, that and I got this blade. I literally was had this display this display on phone on my video on the phone. It’s just at a bad angle, but and I might still post it. I might still post it. Uh, but the NBA today came out with this stupid last two-minute report and pretty much said they admitted that it should not have been called a foul on Jordan Pool. Pool makes clean contact with the ball and dislodges it away from Barnes prior to incidental contact occurring with Barnes wrist thereafter. The NBA commented on the incorrect call. So basically the NBA say they got that wrong. They shouldn’t have sent uh uh him uh Barnes to the free throw line and the Pelicans lose the game by four points eventually into the game. And you know you see what I’m saying? You see what I’m saying? Like that was the frustrating. But we saw this live and of course your coach Willie Green doesn’t have this challenge. Doesn’t have any more challenge cuz he challenged the play earlier in the game which I didn’t think that was that crucial for him to be challenging with Derek Queen knocking a ball a similar play. a similar play uh where Derek Queen knocked the ball knocked the ball out of somebody’s hand and they called a foul on him and the referee literally says while Queen makes contact with the ball and does knock the ball out of his hand. As he’s coming down, he swipes the hand of the offensive player and that’s makes it a foul. And it was like, okay, okay, this is what we doing tonight. We’re we’re we’re going to be goofy like this tonight with these referees. And now you come out with this last two-minute report admitting that you made a huge mistake in the game which cost us a chance to possibly go win this game. At that point again, the Pelicans were only down two. And you know, and had they got the ball back, who knows what could have happened. All I know is the blender was rocking. The blender was rocking. We was on top of it. But when we saw that and then you came to the realization that you ain’t got no challenges cuz you ch you wasted your challenge on something earlier you just went ah and got to deal with it again still not again there’s still some positives to take away from this team Zion still beasting Trey still beasting can I get just one night where all five of my guys are good offensively but also get better on this transition defense get back down on the floor and please hurry up and get back healthy man we need it man. Uh, but what are your thoughts on what you saw last night against the Spurs? Uh, I I again, I don’t see no reason to panic. We still got 80 games to go. You can learn from these mistakes. Let’s get them out the way early. Let’s I mean, because they were expected to be chemistry issues. You’re seeing them, but we still got a lot of time of Hicks this stuff as we get ready to go against I think Brooklyn on Monday night. What are your thoughts on the Pelicans right now? The state of the team. What did you see last night that you liked that you didn’t like? Clap back in the comments and hit that subscribe button here on Pelicus Digest. The last two-minute report on that Jordan Poole foul is absolutely infuriating 10:45. It's tough to take a loss in OT, but even tougher when the league admits they cost you a chance to win. Great breakdown! I agree, Zion and Trey were monsters 02:27, but Herb's goose egg 07:02 and the transition defense struggles 08:00 are definitely the most concerning points of the night. If we can get everyone contributing on the same night, this team is dangerous. The NBA officially messed up 11:04, but the fight was there! Keep beasting, Zion and Trey! Next up, Boston!
I went to the stadium yesterday and watched the game… Pelican doesn't defend all guys… what.s going on.. no defense,, no boxout, no rebound…no focus for catch the ball….nonsense….If Pelicnas don't defend like this, lose every game, home or away game…😮
If the refs do their JOB and call the fouls when Zion drives, the Pels would be 2-0!
If you're starved for even more pelicans content check out my recaps of the first 2 games! Love Melz on the Mic!
why are they allowed to review a scored basket and take away points but not allow the review of an obvious ref mistake. this league is shit.
Trey Murphy cost pels tht game willie did good castle hit that 3 trey was supposed to press up low def iq
The coach play some weird lineups
What I didn't like is all that no calls against Zion, the man gets hacked every time he goes inside. The refs let's the opposing team foul Z every time, no call.
Yep, Pels should've won this game. If we had a better coach, then things would be different. Did I hear boos when they introduced Willie? 😅
Herb should not have been shooting period, he`s not a shooter Herb is a defense and rebound man and short shots not long shots, fire Willie
You can see they grabbing him every time. Ja get calls for two quarters. Anyone on spurs got a fouls
We talking like these dudes aint play basketball 🏀 all there life
I like our rookies i want see more peavy & shu
Jordan good pick up. Call Boogie
Another great show, Melz! Looks like there was an emphasize on Herb as a scorer, when he should’ve focused on his defensive prowess. Queen looked great, and nice comeback from Trey!
Zion hurt us by missing that free throw bro it’s would’ve been 108-107 instead it was 107-107 ot.
Trey is soft bro I’m sorry I love trey but he soft af.
Joe Budden??
Melz I seen at game Friday dapped you off at least you there not like them other podcast couch players supporting your team and reporting on it .. at least it's great to watch both rookies and see how team grows
Too much talent to be losing these winnable games.
I'M SORRY BRO, WE DONT HAVE TO ANALYZE WILLIE…COACHING IS ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE…..DAMN
If we were the JAZZ and not the Pels we would of won
It's it me or dude should like a morning radio show disc jockey talking basketball….. lollll I can't take him serious…. lol
Coaching is terrible. Game clock and game situation decisions are terrible. I hate a defense that sets up inside the 3 point line. All teams wanna shoot 3's. You have to defend that shot.
I still see Willie being unfit to coach this team. It was plain to see herb wasn’t making a difference but he refused to play Bey in the bottom of the 4th quarter. The goal of the game is to win. We had a lead and just need to keep scoring which Bey provided and herb lacked. Bey needs to start
Refs were terrible
