I’m John Carales, beatw writer for Boston Sports Journal. Uh I’ve been covering the team for about 20 years now and I’ve written a couple of books about the team. And today the team I’m talking about is a team that beat the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Boston Celtics win 125 to 105. Later on, I’ll uh thank the Cavs for all of the things that they did to help along help this win along because the Cavs were certainly complicit in their own demise. Again, the individual players in the second in the second segment, Jaylen, Josh Mina, Pton Pritchard, among others. Let’s just start with this win and the those clutch moments that I was just talking about. First of all, first and foremost, huge win. It’s a win that most people probably chocked up as a loss unless you’re, you know, just going on faith and saying, “Hey, bleed green.” Okay, fine. Totally fine. You want to do that, that’s that’s your prerogative. Analyzing this, you look at it, you say, “Okay, this is probably going to be a loss.” Uh, but as I said in yesterday’s show with Tom, it I said what, a 25 to 30% chance of winning this game, which means you win three out of 10. And this was one of the 10 because they shot the ball extraordinarily well for most of the game. They finished at 37% which is above average, just a little bit above league average, but at one point it was they were 20 of 50 uh late in the game. They finished 21 of 57. And so there’s a little one of seven stretch that included some garbage time, a couple of late misses, but for all intents and purposes, that 40% was about what they shot for most of this game. So I thought this is this is like the best case scenario for the Celtics in a you know, in a win that is still in that figuring out phase. So, the first few games of the season that they lost, they weren’t shooting well at all. Just obviously Payton and Derek still struggling from three. They were combined four of 20. Uh, not good. That’s not a good number. Was that 20%. Um, so the rest of the guys like Sam Hower, seven of 13. Uh, you had Anthony Simons, four of six. Uh Josh May not two of six. Okay. Jaylen Brown four of nine. The the rest of the guys hit plenty. Uh so the shooting was there to kind of carry them through as they figured out some of the things that they were still trying to figure out defense and rebounding and all that stuff. The rebounding was really good for the first half. Uh and I’ll get more into that later on when I talk about the Cavs being complicit. But in general, the the the rebounding was good, the shooting was good. It allowed them to get through some tough moments. Uh second quarter, uh a great second quarter, a great second quarter in a season so far where second quarters have been a problem. So, here are the two most important stretches that I was talking about. Uh, I’ll start with Sam Hower who came in and hit four for four and then hit another one shortly after that and then doesn’t doesn’t really get another couple of shots until the fourth quarter. And it’s just a funny little stretch, but Hower comes in and hits the um his first four three-pointers. And this is this is an important stretch right away because the the Cavs shot 10 of 12 in the first quarter from three. So the Celtics end up down at the end of the first quarter, 42 to 40, which is also another first of all another 42point quarter. The Celtics have this thing about giving up 42-point quarters, but at least this time they scored 40 to counteract that. before they were giving up 40 point 42 point quarters and scoring what 18 like it they were getting crushed in those quarters and the that stretch of Hower three-pointers he comes in at 605 he checked in at 620 15 seconds later three-pointer then what’s this 40 seconds later three-pointer and then 30 not know it’s like 28 seconds later three-pointer And then uh a minute 15 later later three-pointer. Uh mixed in there a Simons three-pointer. Uh on the other side, the Cavs were going just ballistic themselves. Hunter Mobley hits a couple. Um the the only thing early on that Mobley had done, uh Wade hits a three-pointer, Mitchell starts going crazy, Porter hits a three-pointer. they start the the the Cavs are just pouring it on. So to me that stretch where Sam Hower checked in is a critical an early lowkey critical point for the Celtics and we didn’t know it at the time. Kind of felt it because it was a shootout but the Cavs put out that 42point first quarter. Hower is is right there putting up three-pointers himself and then Simons and other guys start kind of chipping in a little bit. But their ability, the Celtics ability to shoot uh in that first quarter and and hit those three-pointers was massive because that allows them to go into the second quarter. Only down two, you weather the storm. Down two is nothing. that allows them to go in and have a second quarter where they start playing really well. They don’t have a lull like they did in the um in other quarters. In fact, they win this quarter 35 to 18. They go back and forth. And at the time, I said, “Geez, the Celtics can’t shake these Cavs.” And because the Celtics are are, you know, started out so tough and and it’s, you know, still a learning phase of this, I’m thinking, h here we go. The Celtics are shooting great, but they they can’t just shake free of the Cavs because the Cavs are matching them. Donovan Mitchell was doing his thing at that point. 15 points through a quarter and a couple of minutes into the second quarter. I’m thinking like, okay, th this might not go so great because the Celtics are hanging now, but can they sustain it? I expect the Cavs to sustain. And it actually went the other way. As I’m saying, geez, these Celtics can’t shake the Cavs. All of a sudden, you get a 20-4 20-3 run in which Jaylen Brown scores 13 points. And that stretch is is obviously a a a monster stretch. This is where they they they turn things around. A third critical stretch happens late in the third quarter where the Celtics had it up to 19. And I’m like, God, here’s another one. They can’t get they can’t get over that 20 point. Like, if you can get it to 20, maybe this can this can go away. The Cavs can just go away. Cavs cut it to 12 and then you get Derek White layup. Simons hits a crazy moonshot bank three to beat the shot clock. Kada gets fouled, goes to the line, hits a shot, hits one of two free throws, but that gets the lead back up to 18. So went from 19 to 12, back to 18. They they hit a couple of baskets and it got it down to 13. But you have these three critical points. Number one, first quarter, Hower and Simons matching a blistering hot Cavs. So the Cavs can’t run away and hide early. Second quarter, hanging and and playing well and then going on that massive run. Jaylen Brown was incredible in that. That’s a critical point because now all of a sudden the Celtics are up 15 heading into the third quarter. They generally play well in third quarters. You’re feeling good about this. And they did come out. They played well. Like I said, built that lead up to 19. Cavs coming back at the end of third quarters. Celtics have kind of waned a little bit. And it looked like they were starting to, but that stretch to get it to keep it in the teens heading into the fourth quarter. That was that was so important because then the Celtics could Josh Minot put this thing away with his defensive intensity. Uh, and let’s take that and go into the second segment of individual performances. Jaylen, Josh, Payton, uh, Nimi, all of those guys. We’ll talk about them individually as we come back and talk about this Celtics win. Today’s show is brought to you by Pelaton. Go check out Lockdown NBA and Lockdown NBA game night. They are both in the same feed. game night seven days a week covering every game in the association with little cameos from all of us like me on this show uh on Thursday then locked down NBA covers all the big story lines so that’s Monday through Friday both in the same feed you find that or you found this individual performances uh I got to start with Jaylen Brown because I think there’s a temptation to say Josh Mina oh my god and some of these other guys definitely like those the the aberrations and I would count the Josh Min game as an aberration because he set a careerhigh in rebounding but Jaylen like I said before that 13-point stretch was just unbelievable. He’s shooting the lights out right now. Uh he he had 18 points in the in the second quarter. Uh he had 30 overall, 12 of 20, four of nine from three. Uh a couple of free throws. Uh he had been getting to the line a lot more. So I, you know, whatever. Uh five rebounds, four assists, a steal, a block, just two turnovers. It’s not it’s not going to be everybody’s top story on Thursday, but that is that is a superstar line. That is an incredible line for Jaylen. 354 steel a block and just two turnovers. Celtics protected the ball well. Eight turnovers. Just eight turnovers in this game. Uh 60 44 and 100 splits. I know the 100 is just two for two from the line, but still uh Jaylen doing everything and being that that steady guy like he has he has stepped up minus the Knicks game. he has stepped up and played really well. Um it makes me think like the Knicks game he might have been he might have put a little bit too much on that. You obviously that’s where the Celtics season ended. He probably had a little extra juice. It was his birthday. He’s in New York. He was probably like he probably put a little too much on that and uh I don’t know. Did he psych himself out? that whatever it was, it happens. Uh the way he’s the way he played in this game was absolutely perfect. Um great just a great great performance from Jaylen. Josh May not uh 11 points, 14 rebounds, career-high 14 rebounds, career-high five offensive rebounds. The rebounding is a big story here obviously because the Celtics won that battle 18-11 offensive rebounding. Uh overall it was 52- 42. That’s the Celtics. We know the game plan. The game plan is you crush them with crashing and dare them to box you out and and perform well. Again, I’m going to get to the more of this in the next segment when the the Cavs I go I I just look at it from a Cavs perspective, but uh the Celtics won the second chance points 23 to 19. I’m going to venture to say that unless they shoot 15% from three, the Celtics will win every game where they win the second chance points. If they win second chance points, the their winning percentage is going to be, if not perfect, almost perfect this season. And I’d be interested to go back at the end of the season and kind of see what what those number how if those numbers bear out, but they’re going to get outrebounded so much that when they hold teams off, they can do the stuff that they need to do. So, great job there. Uh fast break points still not where it needs to be, but they did force 14 turnovers and scored 19 points off of those turnovers. Uh so the Celtics won the points off turnover battle. Uh, so Josh May not was part of the rebounding thing. Uh, well, the final box actually has him as 15 now. Uh, I’m just noticing that I’m looking at the official scorers report as opposed to the box score on NBA.com. Huh. Interesting. NBA.com has him as 14 rebounds. the official scores report uh has him as 15 rebounds uh and 10 defensive rebounds. So that there’s a little discrepancy there, but regardless, he was he was so good uh coming in. Uh I highlighted him before the game as um a starter, a potential starter, and they ended up doing that. Uh I did that on Boston Sports Journal to guard Evan Mobley and he did a really good job. I he’s the exact right like specs to go guard Evan Mobley to stay in front of him. Moley is not going to overpower a lot of people. So Minot as as the four as opposed to going double big. Chris Buché was a DNP coach’s decision. They didn’t have to go double big on this. And you you go with May not who’s just a little bit more mobile uh faster uh can handle the ball on in transition. He he did everything they wanted him to do on Moy. I thought Moy was completely invisible for most of this game and my not starting was was a huge reason why. Um the getting in there and and clearing the rebounds is just so massively important for him. And Namish Kada, excuse me, we’re going to lump him into that too because they either had 27 or 28 combined rebounds and the 13 rebounds for Kada was a careerhigh, five offensive rebounds for him. So that these two guys getting in there and keeping possessions alive and giving the Celtics 95 shots. So, in those 95 shots, they shoot 44%. Not the best percentage in the world, but they make 42 baskets as compared to 35 for the Cavs, who only got 87 shots. And the Celtics put up 52 three-pointers. Cavs put up 57. And I’m sorry, other way around. The the Cavs put up 52, the Celtics put up 57. Um, and the Celtics end up ju just getting more. They they shot 21 to 57. The Celtics get more opportunities. uh they go to the line in equal amount of times. The Celtics cash in a couple more. That energy, that rebounding, that’s all part of all of this. So, uh great uh great game from Kada. This is another great game from Kada, which you hope is part of a uh a trend that’s building now. He has had stretches where it’s like two, three, four good games in a row and uh and then he tails off. What we hope for from Kada is consistency and two in a row is better than not two in a row. Now we’ve got to see three and four and five. And Joe Mula has been pushing him on this. You got to come out and just you got to do the things that put you in position to be good. You’ve got to make sure that you know the rest, the warm-ups, the routine, the mental, all of that stuff is all where it needs to be and then the rest of the stuff can can take care of itself. So good job by Kada who also had three assists, you know, a 10point, 13 rebound, three assists, three steals for him, three steals for Minot. This is incredible. That’s incredible stuff, uh, from I guess your front court, right? Minot and Kada are the the center and power forward. So, uh, great great performances out of them. Pritchard did not shoot well. Four of 13 overall, one of eight from three. But I thought he had a great game otherwise. He was in control. He, you know, the 10 assists, I think nine of them came in the first half, but he was penetrating. He was uh finding guys. He hit uh was Anthony Simons top left of the uh above the break with this hook pass. Pritchard drives right is at the right block and fires a hook pass high opposite to Simons for a three. That was beautiful pass. So Pritchard even though the shots aren’t falling I think he and Derek White again. White five of 20, three of 12 from three, struggling a little bit with their shooting and finding their offense. Derek needs to calm down. Derek needs to let the game come to him. He’s getting good looks. Like, I think if you look at his the shots that he’s taking, you can argue those are good looks, but I also think that he’s rushing. He’s taking the absolute first decent look that he can get where I just think he can be a little bit more patient on some of them. and look for the good to great. This is a place where you got to look for that good to great shot and and the shots will start to fall. Don’t worry about it. So, uh, but Pritchard distributing was good. And look, Derek White wasn’t a complete negative either. He was a plus 15. I know the Celtics won by 20, but he was a plus 15. Uh, four assists, five rebounds, a steal, two turnovers. He got to the line six of six. So, he he did other things. He definitely did other things. He’s just pressing when it comes to the shot. Uh nice game from Simons, like I said. Uh nice game from Hower, like I said, seven of 13. All of his shots were three-pointers. A good job defensively from him. Garza, Luca Garza, you know, had a a little old school post move in there. That was fun. Ugo Gonzalez played four minutes and sat. He you was not effective against Donovan Mitchell. Not a surprise. It’s not a big deal. Uh Xavier Tilman, minimal minutes. Shyman, Joe shouted out Shyman getting some some minutes up against uh Donovan Mitchell and he did a decent job and and that was that was good. Baylor slowly kind of trying to weasle his way back into the lineup. Uh and and this is how you do it. This is how you do it. Uh I I haven’t given up on anybody and I’m certainly not giving up on Baylor Sherman. Uh he has an opportunity. He has an opportunity to be a contributor and this is how you do it. So good job by him. So those are the individual performances. We’ll come back. Look, if I’m being real, the Cavs definitely deserve an assist on this as well. I’ll talk about that when I come back. Uh, okay. gonna wrap it up here with the Cavs who I I just I couldn’t understand what was going on uh with them other than to say look Donovan Mitchell played I think the hamstring he showed up on the injury report with uh a hamstring thing. Uh he scored 12 points in the first quarter. He had a a three-pointer early at the second uh 10 1036 mark in the second quarter and that was it. Didn’t score again. did not score again. Missed a couple of free throws, all of that. But that was uh a very if I’m from a from a Cavs perspective, I’m like, what the hell happened to Donovan Mitchell? But the it must have been must have been the hamstring thing because he just didn’t look like himself after after he sat Evan Mobley completely non-existent. I was I was talking to people before the game who asked me, you know, we always thought, “How do you think it’s going to go tonight?” I thought, man, Evan Mobley could have a big night. This is he he has the if he’s as good as he’s supposed to be, he has advantages over everybody on the team, you know, who who can guard him? Well, Josh Min can guard him. Uh, but I was expecting Moy to be like, this should have been a a 30 point, 15 to 20 rebound game. He he could have had a monster night against the Celtics team, but neither he nor the rest of the Cavs were really interested in rebounding. I I I could tell every team every team knows what the scouting report is. Just shoot your shoot jumpers, shoot whatever shot you want and crash the boards. The the misses are like assists. It’s the Kobe assist. You grab the offensive rebound and you go and score. So, why didn’t they crash the boards? Again, I’m not I’m asking kind of like in a rhetorical way. Uh I’m very happy for, you know, that kind of performance. I I don’t know what what caused it. I I’d be disappointed in Moy, though. I I really I’m going to, you know, listen to Locked on Cavs to get their take. This this was a just a terrible game from a guy that should have dominated. Uh it is a credit to Minot and a credit to the Celtics for keeping him in check and and kind of forcing him that way. But I I do feel like there’s a a little bit of the once you force him in that direction, he very willingly kind of goes into that direction. And it is a question about like look, the Cavs are a championship contender, but are they Do they have the right players? They have talented players. Is it the right players? I don’t know. I don’t want to overreact to something early, but the the Cavs like Mitchell kind of disappearing after his first stint was, you know, kind of very helpful. Moy not being aggressive, the Cavs not being aggressive. They came into this game 17th in the NBA in offensive rebound percentage. I was surprised that it was that low because they’ve got between Jared Allen and Evan Mobley, they’ve got they’ve got guys that can crash. The league as a whole is crashing as a philosophy. There’s a lot more offensive rebounding going on. Yet, the Cavs don’t seem interested in doing that. So, that really helped the Celtics. Whenever you see a team kind of punt on offensive rebounding, then great. That’s that’s perfect for the Celtics. I do wonder, and this is kind of like the New Orleans thing, if these two teams were to match up in the playoffs, and it’s possible, if they were to match up in the playoffs, they probably would have had a plan to attack the basket and attack the offensive rebounds because it would be coaching malpractice if they didn’t. But I would say probably not going that deep into their bag uh against the Celtics to get an October win. They probably felt like we’re more talented, we should get this win, and they didn’t do certain things. I bring all of this up to just to say that it’s it is great that the Celtics won. We do have to take into account that the Cavs kind of didn’t play their kind of full to their full capability. And I want to treat these games appropriately. You take the games that you you you know, however it goes, it goes and you take it and you take the win and you move on. Uh, and it’s a big win, but the there’s a different level to this Cavs team, or should be. And it’s it’s just I’m just going to put it there that the next time these two teams play, I’m just I wonder if they’re going to do a few things differently. But great great job by the Celtics. This is I’ll wrap it up with this win like this. When we talk about win totals at the end, we kind of talked about it in yesterday’s show a little bit, too. Well, I was saying 0 and7 is possible. They got the win in New Orleans. Okay. 1 and six, two and five. Well, now now three and four, I think, is on the table in this first seven game stretch because they can beat Philly. And maybe Tyrese Maxi is due for a stinker. And maybe it’s the second time around against Edgecomb, the the Celtics have more film and they kind of know how to guard him a little bit more. You go out and you get that. I don’t have a lot of faith in the Houston game. I’m sorry. Like that’s second back toback against a team full of trees that they will crash. That that’s that’s a game that look just gird your loins. This is going to be uh that one might be a tough one. Which is totally fine. Not a big deal. If they go three and four, well, now they come out of that stretch a lot better than I thought they would. And then they have that four game stretch I talked about afterwards where it’s Utah, Washington, Orlando twice. Well, now you go three and one. Ah, now you’re six and five. Okay. Well, if you’re six and five, that that 44 win prediction that I had suddenly feels a lot better because you get through that early part of the schedule relatively. Um, well, if you can start piling up some wins against these these bad teams, looks okay. You look like you’re in a good spot. So, this is an important win for them. in in terms of playoffs and all that. This is an important win. Anytime you can steal a game, take a game against a good team. Uh that’s an important game. That’s an important win. And it’s important for confidence and important to kind of like reward guys like a guy like Minot getting the rewards, the hustle, the defense, the all of that stuff. and all the attention after the game and that that’s just motivating to be like, “Yes, I’m going to go play this way again. I’m going to I’m going to keep doing this. The wins at this point of the season are so important just to just to be like, you know, you you you accomplished a goal. Here’s a treat.” And that’s okay, great. I want to accomplish another goal, so I get another treat. So that that’s big. So Cavs Cavs doing their part. Great. Congratulations, I guess. Who cares? Um, it’s the win is important for Boston. Still got a lot to figure out, but you take this momentum into Philly, they could win three in a row, get back to 500. That’s entirely possible. That’s entirely possible. So, I will be here. I’ll be here tomorrow with another podcast. Then, postgame Philly, postgame Rockets, and it’s all free. It’s all available everywhere. Boston Celtics stun Cleveland Cavaliers 125-105 behind Jaylen Brown’s 30-point masterpiece and unexpected rebounding dominance. Can they maintain momentum?

John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal breaks down three game-defining stretches that secured the victory, including Sam Hauser’s four consecutive three-pointers and Brown’s explosive 18-point second quarter. The analysis covers Josh Minott and Neemias Queta’s career-high rebounding performances that neutralized Cleveland’s frontcourt, Payton Pritchard’s 10-assist playmaking despite shooting struggles, and Evan Mobley’s puzzling disappearance against Boston’s undermanned defense.

Key topics include the Celtics winning the second-chance points battle 23-19, Derrick White’s shooting slump and path to correction, Cleveland’s baffling lack of rebounding aggression, and how this win transforms Boston’s early season outlook with winnable games ahead.

  1. I'm glad that Mobley is still soft, and we won the game because of it. I hated all the idiots who said he was the 2nd coming of Kevin Garnett. Fuck no. He's SOFT, mild tempered, and not a killer. If he ever figures it out the Cavs will be a real contender, but it won't be soon. You can't change nature, personality, or disposition.

  2. Just goes to show how quickly the Celtics are responding to change. We did play very well but the pace really hurt the Cavs, they’re still playing through Donovan Mitchell too much and when he’s not on the floor or gassed they just fall apart.

A win like this is so encouraging to know that we’re heading in the right direction development wise. Great game.

  3. This wasn't about he Celtics being good, this was about the Cavs being bad and Celtics taking advantage. We all know Celtics are not a good team and only hurting themselves for draft seating.

  4. Minott has earned the right with his play to get consistent minutes as a starter or bench players. I prefer Minott starting next to Queta because it appears they play well together. Minott is seizing the opportunity to show he is an NBA player.

  5. Nice win for the C’s. Cavs definitely items did t look interested in winning but glad the C’s took advantage. Hauser looks more fit this season and more focused. They’re really a Jayson Tatum away from being a top team

  6. A few things that stood out to me and I hope they continue..

    1. JB had the GRAVITY of a 1 last night. Stats are one thing, but its the gravity that really makes a 1 so important. When he was out there, 2/3 cavs were within a few feet of him at all times and the Celtics looked entirely different because of it

    2. Point guard Pritchard is figuring it out. We nee PGP to have stat lines like he did last night. 10 assists, he even missed a few easy ones. He's improving rapidly as a playmaker and if that continues there is no real argument for him coming off the bench. He's more than just a bucket. He did a great job on Don. Next game he gets a chance at redemption vs maxey. That defense is the final boss for him.

    3. Minott is the feel good story we needed. Genuinely happy for him and the effect he's having on the team

    4. The role players and rotation guys are becoming stars in their role. Queta is rebounding and protecting the rim. Garza is a workhorse and becoming an offensive threat. Simons is a bucket. Minott is an energy pest. Hauser is Hauser…

    5. This team is finding their identity and chemistry well above expectation. This team is starting to really look like a team.

    6. White is struggling to be selfish. He needs to call his own number a lot more now and I think that he's struggling with that. He'll figure it out soon.

Last night was vindication for Joe. Lots of questions about him coming in to the season. Lots of questions about his rotation decisions and tactics in the first games of the season… Those ideals and tactics seem to be paying off. His approach, to connect with the human side of his players not just the basketball side is paying huge dividends…. He drew up a great out of bounds play last nigth! He had great game feel… Hopefully all of these things continue.

This teams margin for error remains very low. But last night was huge,, that CAN do it.

  7. LFG! This is a team sport but its all about Jaylen. He has got to be a beast this year and show that he is a Supermax player and not just a #2 to Tatum.

  8. In my opinion Queta could be easily a 15p 10r center….but if you want a double double machine you have to feed the machine…some guys are doing a bad job passing the ball to him….i mean the Guy is a 7 footer beast its not that hard to find him on the floor…he's setting screens for them and deserves a couple of assists close to the basket!

  9. well PP and white will be fine they are doing alot of other things plus now who gets them the ball with No Tatum! That i give Tatum he would actively look for those two off the ball.

  10. Big is great, but, my college coach always emphasized that it’s not how big you are. What matters is how big you play. We had drills where we had to block out and let the ball hit the floor before we picked it up. We dominated the boards,
