Marner left because he knew Matthews was cooked
But I was told by a bunch of people here that matthews is still the same players hes always been!
Really looking forward to more posts like this, it’s going to be fun to run the captain out of town
This is a legitimate concern for him. Matthews in his prime was a top 5 player in the league. This year and last he’s JUST an elite first line center. This team needs him to be the Matthews they built their hopes and aspirations on again. And it’s also sad to see a man who was on pace to be a generational goal scorer fall off from that.

There’s something wrong with him – mentally or physically or both. No jump, not tough on picks, bad hands, no wrister…. Shooting a ton but missing the net a lot and Domi’s shot looks better.
Bérubé keeps trying to form a line around him and trying different combos but perhaps he isn’t who he used to be and we all need to accept that.
I’ll take my downvotes as usual!
Yeah but how many posts and crossbars has he nailed, bet he’s first in the league at those.

Not covering McDavid in the slot destroyed him.
The ultimate gas light is about to happen as soon as jays fever is over
“Toronto so toxic now they are hating on auston matthews now that marner is gone!!”
Maybe these guys just aren’t the guys you know
When he signed for 5yrs I was happy with that. Best case scenario he’s here for his prime and he signs somewhere else after, or he gets hurt and never performs like he used to and he’s only here for 5yrs, which is exactly what’s happening.
It’s sad to think our “best” moments with these players is already in the past.
Don’t think Berube is the best coach for Matthews
Matthews is a shell of his former self. A lot of soul searching for the leafs needs to happen before trade deadline on where the leafs are headed. Spoiler alert, I think it is down rather than up
He’s definitely not living up to his contract. I’m tired of hearing he’s hurt. He needs to produce. It doesn’t seem like that long ago that Matthews, Nylander, Marner, Reilly and Tavares were all going to be the foundation of a championship team. There was so much promise. Everything has just gone off the rails.
Im gonna get burnt at the stake for this, but would this team be in better shape if we moved off matthews and kept marner instead?
Wonder if this will be a lesson to all the players looking to sign 5-year deals to maximize their profits.
Matthews had a historic 2023-2024 season when he scored 69 goals.
Then some sort of injury happened in training camp or the start of last year and he has just never been the same.
His deceptive shot is just gone. This was also evident in 4 Nations. What made him extraordinary is now ordinary so he looks like any other centre out there. He also struggled last year when Marner fed him so many opportunities and he did nothing with them.
And that’s good, right?!? 😭😭
Is it fair to say at this point that he catfished us all? It appears that this is the player he actually is.
Been saying it for a couple years now his wrist is mangled he can’t snipe like he used to.
I’d really like to know what his injury is because it’s clear he’s not the same player as he was previously. I assume that he will never reach his peak performance and he will turn into a 30 goal scorer instead of the 40-60 he previously was.
At least he’s not 251st
You see the chain he wears during games? He got bought by Logan Paul.
As I have been saying for a long time we have gotten rid of the wrong guy.
Marner ran this team.
This team will be fighting for a playoff spot the last week.
It’s actually the fans fault that’s happening, we care too much.
Only way I can put his season into words is that he’s looking for open space when he normally creates his own space
We might be cooked fellas. Whatever he did that caused him to go to Germany to get checked out is obviously still impacting him and I’m at the point where he may never consistently look like his old self ever again and that’s extremely sad to say but far from surprising being a leafs fan.
If you guys are bored go back and watch his 69 goals on YouTube, he looks like a completely different player it’s not even close.
Greatest goal scorer of the generation some might say
I’m more concerned than frustrated. If he was struggling to score, or even be a threat, while looking like himself, that’d be frustrating. But he hasn’t looked like himself for quite some time now. He occasionally struggles to handle the puck. Whenever he does get the odd shot, he tends to miss the net. It’s rough.
Whatever he’s dealing with, he’s currently unable to perform like he used to. Hopefully they can get it sorted out, or this team isn’t going to do much of anything.
I picked the correct year to stop watching hockey.
Ironically, one of the few guys who took the shorter deal, and he might be wishing he took a longer one
Maybe he wishes he signed 8 years
He’s never been the same since he crashed into the boards head/neck first in pursuit of 70 against Detroit
It’s crazy that here we are, a year later, still talking about Matthews not being himself, he’s officially cooked and I am no longer holding my breath he returns to form
He used to be so dominant 5 on 5
Dudes washed. 3 more years of this clown then we can do rebuild 2: electric boogaloo.
The sooner they start moving assets and try to get younger, the shorter the pain will be…
This team is feeling A LOT like the 06-10 period where we wasted a lot of time trying to scrape and claw into a 7 or 8 spot in the hopes we catch lightning in a bottle.
Except this time we do have decent peices like Knies, Cowan and Danford. If we cut our losses right now it can be a 2-3 year retool instead of a 5-6 year rebuild where we’re in denial of what’s happening and don’t get anything of value for Auston or Willy.
His decline is something really unique. Once a top 3 player on the planet, clear-cut best goal scorer in the world – best shot in the world. This isn’t very controversial amongst most fans.
Now he’s just a decent center. Nothing special at all. His shot is gone and he doesn’t fucking care out there.
Its going to be real hard to look at our teams stats in 10-15 years to see him and Marner hold the records they have since its clear we bet on the wrong horses from the start.
The Leafs will go as he goes. If he’s actually broken… pack it up, they’re done.
Why is February 1st, 2025, the date that was chosen instead of January 1st, 2025, or start of last season for instance?
He’s third in expected goals in that time and he’s shooting under 7%. It is completely within the realm of possibility that this is just a shit happens sort of deal, but also very possible it’s about his wrist.
I’m not sure I’m ready to hop on the he’s done bandwagon, from what I’ve seen he more so looks like a player that had an injury he played through for a season, and is learning to trust his body again. He’ll be back soon.
This is one of the most depressing Leafs stats I’ve ever read, and that’s really saying something.
