🔴 LIVE🔴Seattle Seahawks VS Washington Commanders /Week 9 / Madden NFL 26
a look there inside Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland. Tonight, a good one in the NFC. It’s the Seattle Seahawks and the Washington Commanders Commanders. [Applause] Met. Welcome. It’s Mike Tico along with Greg Olson and Matt Gay going to kick things off. Off we go on Sunday Night Football and he’ll be brought down just beyond the 25 yd line. Seahawks come out and they are led by a new quarterback Sam Darnold from USC. He’s bounced around for his first seven seasons. This is fifth different franchise as he starts year eight in the NFL. And Greg, it’s year one with the Seahawks. To say last year changed the trajectory of Sam Darnold’s career feels a little bit like an understatement, doesn’t it, Mike? I mean, the year he had in Minnesota alongside head coach Kevin Oonnell by far was the best year of his career, and it’s a big reason why Seattle paid him what they did to come in, replace Gino Smith as the starting quarterback. So now the question is years ago under Kyle Shanahan, one year under Kevin Okonnell, can he now bring that to Seattle and have that same level of success and take them back to the playoffs? An incompletion on first down. Here’s second and 10 from the shotgun. Here’s Darnold. Smith in Jigma there for the catch. And nice work there after the catch. He’s a little short of a first down after a gain of seven. That’s a gain of eight. Brings up third and two. Three plays in and a test. It’s third and two. Operating from the gun, it’s Darnold. That’s caught. It’s Kenneth Walker and he’s going to be brought down behind the line. This defense fired up to start the game. It’s fourth down. Anytime it’s third and short, you better account for the running back out of the backfield. And that’s exactly what they do here. Great job by the defense taking him down for a loss. Brings up fourth down [Applause] now. Fair catch. He’ll take it at about the 24 yd line. Here come the Commanders and they are led by the offensive rookie of the year in 2024. Greg, it was such a good rookie campaign for Jaden Daniels out of LSU. When you think back over the last couple decades, Mike, I’m not sure there was a more impressive rookie NFL quarterback season than what we saw a year ago at a Jane Daniels. not only personally the efficiency, the effectiveness, the explosiveness and production, but the ability to turn around a franchise in Washington that hadn’t seen greatness and hadn’t seen success in what seems like ages. Jaden Daniels, Dan Quinn, it is a new era of Washington Commanders football. And I’ll tell you what, they got themselves to the playoffs a year ago. I wouldn’t be shocked to see them playing in that NFC Championship game come the end of this season. Ball on the 28 yd line. Here’s second and seven operating from the gun. It’s Daniels. There’s Z. He’s got it right side and he’s going to be brought down up past the 45. Washington. 18 yds on the connection. Good for a Commander first down. In order for this play to be successful against man coverage, Mike, two things need to happen. One, the quarterback has to anticipate the break. He has to get that ball out on time. And then the rest is the receiver creating the separation at the top. And when both are accomplished, you can see what the results are. They’ll run here with the rookie and he’ll get back to the line of scrimmage. That’s about all. He was tackled at the 46 yd line. A gain of a yard brings up second and nine from the 46. Here’s second down and nine working out of the gun. It’s Daniels. That’s Mcccluren open on the left side. He’ll get about six before he’s taken down. That’s a gain of seven. makes it third and two. The back field empty here for third and two. [Applause] Third and two. Here’s Daniels. Has his man. It’s Samuel. And they’re going to be set up in the red zone. They’ve got it inside the 15. A big play there for Washington. It’s a gain of 34. First and 10. Well, they’ve come out swinging here on this opening drive through the air. And that’s exactly what they wanted to do. Generate some early chunk plays and try to get some points and he’ll be met in the back field and dropped behind the line of scrimmage. A lot of times the success of a draw depends on the defensive ends, Mike, rushing the passer. In this case, a great job by the defensive end. He initially reads pass, but then he determines that it’s going to be a draw. He quickly adjusts and he’s able to tackle the running back for a loss. He’s got it inside the five. Looking for the pylon, but the official right there is going to mark him out of bounds at the oneyd line. That’s a gain of 16 yd and it sets up first and goal. Go. This opening drive going to form so far. Now they’ve got it first and goal. Let him go. Let him go. Let him go. Belgo. Play action here with Daniels. Ah, the pressure too much and he goes down. Demarcus Lawrence. He gets in to drop him. It’s a loss of eight. The offense goes from feeling really good about the previous play with a real nice pickup to then on the ensuing play ending up going the complete opposite direction. Really nice job here by the defense immediately getting back on track. And what do the coaches say? Just play the next play. And that’s exactly what they did. Now from the nine, it’ll be second and goal. From the shotgun, it’s Daniels. This one caught at the four and he’ll take this down to the two. But a good tackle there going to set up third and goal. Just a simple hitch route. Certainly nothing special there or anything downfield, but the idea is the more of those you throw and those efficient passes, the second the defense moves up to take it away, that’s when you go for the big ones. Third and goal. It’s Daniels. Ah, good blocking and he’s in. Jaden Daniels. Touchdown Washington. The defense comes up with the coverage, but they cannot keep up with the speed as the quarterback scrambles to the end zone for the touchdown. And down here in the red zone, Mike, is where I think a quarterback’s legs can be the most dangerous. The defenders are trying to match backs, match tight ends and receivers, but often it’s the quarterback that has no one assigned to him. And in this case, he’s able to capitalize and run it in himself. Matt Gay on for the extra point. The kick is good and the Commanders will take a seven nothing lead. is seven. Seahawks nothing. So after the touchdown, here’s Gay to kick this one away. This taken in at the 8 yd line and he’ll be brought down right around the 25 yd line. The Seahawks offense ready to possess the football for the second time. They were forced to punt the first time through. It led to a touchdown. So down 7 nothing as they get the ball back for first and 10 [Applause] from the 25. They’ll go to work. First and 10 working out of the gun. It’s Darnold. He keeps it himself and he’ll go into the slide there. It’ll be a gain of a couple. Well, give him some credit. Initially that looked like it was going to be a sack. He’s able to escape the pressure and get away. Picks up a little bit of yardage, but at least he avoids taking that shot. Ball on the 27. Here’s second and eight. First carry now for Kenneth Walker. And this is going to be a Seahawks first down as he gets this up to the 40 yd line. A gain of 12 yds. That’s good for a Seahawks first down. Really nice explosive play there on the ground. And tell you what, for these fans sitting in the stadium, they’re not used to seeing their home team pushed around. So, continue to be physical at the line of scrimmage. Mix in the runs with the pass. And if they can continue to generate these big explosive runs, I don’t think they need to go away from it. A very quick throw there, but not on the same page with this target. That’s incomplete. Elijah Aoyo was the intended target and it’ll bring up second down. Think he just rushed that decision just a little bit downfield. I mean, it’s one thing to trust your guy to make a play in tight coverage, but I think if he was a little bit more patient in his progression, there was an easier throw out there that wouldn’t make him have to throw such a tight window ball and put his receiver in a tight spot. Well, he’s brought down. That pass is going to pick up four and bring up third down. A bit of a quick hitter here. And what you’re hoping for, Mike, is that the defense can’t react quickly enough because the ball’s coming out so hot. But they knew it was coming and they end up holding them to just a short game. Third and six. They’re going to motion the tight end over here. Throwing on third down is Darnold. It’s complete. He’s got puck. Cooper. A pick up of 14 on that one. First down Seattle. And the Seahawks. First down. A gain of 14. These third down conversions are just so important, Mike. Everybody stresses we want to possess the ball. Give our offense as much opportunity to end as many drives as we can scoring points. So, if you want to stay on the field, you better be good on third down. They’ll go play action with Darnold. Headed left, buying time. They get 21 on that one. It’s good for a Seahawks first down. You know, this defense worked all week defending this quarterback as a scrambler, as a runner. But sometimes it’s just hard to simulate until you see him in real life. His speed, his ability to create. We saw him get him here early on the big scramble. He’s able to pick up the first down and keep the drive alive. Throwing on first and 10 is Darnold. That one swung out wide to Walker and they’ll have first and goal. He is down inside the 10 yd line. Really nice job there, Mike. I mean, he sees the blitz coming and just gets the ball out of his hands. Understand where your outlets are. It results in an easy pitch and catch and move the chains. Ball resting on the nine. First down and goal. In motion is Barner. They’ll run here and it’s Charbanet. Nothing there. He is fortunate just to get back to the line. Now it’s second and goal. A loss was definitely not something they had accounted or budgeted for in this spot. And now I think it really limits what do you feel comfortable dialing up here on second and goal. Moved back to the 10. He’ll try here on second and goal. Darnold. Offbalance throw. It’s complete. And the defense trying to tighten down here. They’re going to hold him to a gain of three. That’s going to set up third and goal. It’s now third and Mike, I love studying the NFL and just seeing the amount of ways NFL coordinators are able to get their running backs now involved in the passing game. They’re kind of chess pieces. They can move them out in the slot. They can put them out wide, of course, out of the back field. It’s a big part of today’s modern NFL and he’ll take it on in. Kenneth Walker. Touchdown Seattle. Touchdown Seattle. Well, you think back to their first possession of this game, Mike, it resulted in a punt. Not exactly the fast start the coaches told us was so important as this game unfolds. They get the ball back for possession two. Now, they try to find some rhythm, find their identity of the game plan, and they come away with six. So, that’s how you bounce back in this league. It’s not always going to be perfect. Really nice job settling into this game here with their second possession. Jason Meyers on to attempt the extra point. His kick is good and the Seahawks will tie things up at 77 here in the opening quarter. [Applause] So, back to level after the touchdown in time for the kickoff. On the return, here’s Luke McAffrey. They’ll get this up past the 20. That’s where they’ll set up shot. The Commander offense about ready to get going on their second possession. All even here in this opening quarter. And the drive will begin with first down. [Applause] Man in motion heading left. They’ll begin here on the ground and he’ll get back to the line of scrimmage. That’s about all. Well, this play, Mike, was clearly about the job of this defensive line. Great job holding their ground, forcing these blockers to be stood up. Nowhere to go for this running back and they hold him to no gain. Second and 10. Back to the ground. He’ll get it again. And a nice gain there. He’s out of bounds and that will bring up third down. Very positive returns on that run. I mean really the only thing not to like is that they weren’t able to move the chains. But you know what? the way he ran there. I think they go right back to him and see if he has even a bigger carry in him. [Applause] Third and short and it’s Daniels. The pressure gets there and down he goes back inside the 20 yd line. That is Demarcus Lawrence in there for the sack. And these are the type of splash plays that can have an impact especially as the game goes on. So offensive line has to do a better job to make sure that they have this protection shored up and that this isn’t a sign of things to come. Trese on fourth down. The Commanders going to send out their veteran Tresway to punt back deep for Seattle. Tory Horton. This kickatch hangs up and a fair catch will be taken beyond the 35 yd line. Out comes the Seattle offense as they get ready for their next possession. They’ll do so with first and 10. tight end going in motion here. Off the play fake, it’s Darnold. That ball flutters to the ground. But it’s incomplete. Unfortunate there wasn’t a defender right there in the area. Could have been a turnover. Instead, it brings up second down. They just have to be more creative with their route concepts, Mike. I mean, there’s nobody open, nowhere to go with the ball. And quarterback’s just forced to throw that one away. On second down, it’s Darnold. He’ll get this complete to Walker and he’s going to be out of bounds. gain of just a couple and now we’ve got third down coming up. Defensive coordinators preach all the time, play pass defense with vision. It’s exactly the case here. They’re able to rally to the ball, keep that to a short game. So, we are through one here on Sunday Night Prime Time. Paris sevens on the scoreboard and EA Sports NFL Sunday returns after this. Seahawks football beginning this second quarter. Third, they need eight as we are ready to get back underway. From the gun on third down, it’s Darnold. He’ll be forced to just throw that one away. It’s incomplete. The threat of making a poor decision and throwing a pick is always in the back of your mind. And while you can’t play scared, you do have to play smart. If you can’t find an open target, throw the ball away. Live for the next down. Here’s Michael Dixon now as he’s on to punt for the second time. A fair catch taken. And they’re going to start right at their own 20 yd line. 10. Here comes the Washington offense now. They get set to take over. They’ll work in a tie game here in the second quarter and get started with first and 10. [Applause] The tight ends in motion. Ready [Applause] on play action. Daniels in trouble and down he goes. It’s Kobe Bryant that time up from his safety spot. Gets there to make the play. If there’s any silver lining for this drive, Mike, it’s the fact that at least this sack occurred on an early down. So, I guess technically they have a chance to claw themselves out of this hole. But that’s the third sack of the game. This defense doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Work to do now as they come up on second and long. [Applause] Here’s Daniel and he’ll just bite the bullet and throw this one away. That was a good idea. Didn’t force anything there, but now it’s going to bring up third down. 15. Nice example there, Mike, of the quarterback just being smart with the ball, understanding it didn’t quite develop the way he had intended. Throw that ball out of harm’s way. Live to play another down. Third and long. And here’s Daniels. And he’s going to be out of bounds. He is well, well shy of where he needed to get to. It’ll bring up fourth down. a gain of five even though they gave up that last completion. Mike, that’s a really good drive there for this defense. I mean, from the beginning on those early downs, keeping them from staying ahead of the chains put them in a tough third down situation. And now it brings up fourth down and looks like they’re going to get off the field and he’s going to be hit and dropped right away. That’s great coverage there. Winds up with nothing on the return. at their own. The Seahawks offense make their way out to take over once more. They’ll begin with terrific starting field position. It gets going with first and 10. [Applause] Now Darnold, they’ll try to set up the screen here with Walker and he’ll be taken down rather swiftly after a gain of just three. Just a little slow developing on that screen play there. It was pretty obvious to the entire defense exactly what was going on. Nobody was thinking pass. Nobody was getting back into their drops and just nowhere for that back to go. [Applause] On second down, Walker and they’ll take this down inside the 35. A pick up there of 19 yds. First down Seattle. First down. First and 10 at the 32 yd line. And these are the explosive runs that open everything up. There’s all this conversation about the value of the run game, but when you take a look at the best running teams, Mike, it’s not necessarily how many yards they run for. It’s how many big plays do they generate on the ground. And when you can generate big plays on the ground, it makes everything so much more difficult for the defense. Some defensive ends specialize in getting after the quarterback. Some defensive ends specialize in run game. This guy can really make an impact on both as we saw here for that tackle for loss. [Applause] [Music] From the shotgun, here’s Darnold. That’s to the rookie from Miami, Elijah Aoyo. I’m not sure what was the more difficult aspect of the play, winning his route verse man coverage or catching this pass cuz that quarterback, he put a little extra sauce on that one to get it there on time and he’s able to secure a really nice catch. Putting the tight end in motion. Third and short yardage. And here’s Darnold. He’ll try and get there on the ground and he’s into a slide to avoid the contact. does so successfully and it’s a first down. And the Seahawks first down. First and 10. Anytime a quarterback decides to tuck it and turn himself into a runner, you can just feel the sideline hold their breath. They’re just hoping that he gets down, picks up enough for the first down, but more importantly protects himself so he can get himself back up and continue on. And he finds a little bit of space. He’ll take this forward for a gain of Bobby Wagner. It’s a gain of five. Brings up second and five at the 13 yd line. Second and five. Once again, it’s Walker trying to find some place to go, but nothing developing. Tackled behind the line. It’s a loss of one. He sniffed that one out from the jump. I mean, once he diagnosed and knew where the ball was going, he got there in a hurry and he put an end to that play really before it ever got started. Here’s third and seven. Operating from the gun, it’s Darnold. That’s over the middle and taken in. He’s got it. And he’ll get this down to the two yd line. First and goal as they convert on third down. First down. First and goal at the two yd line. Third downs, Mike. Those are quarterback downs. Those are the downs where you tend to find yourself in a must pass situation. And that’s where the top guys in the league are still capable of overcoming it. So throw the ball downfield, be accurate with the ball. Winning on third downs. That is a recipe for success. And he’s going to be stopped in the back field. Taken down back at the three. And goal. I think this play is a direct result of his film study. He knew exactly where that ball was going before the play was snapped. And that play recognition, man, it separates a lot of guys in this league and results in a negative play. That’s hauled in at the two and he’s in. Kenneth Walker. Touchdown Seahawks. Seahawks. His second TD of the game. And this one gives his team the lead. [Applause] Myers now to add the PAT. [Applause] He knocks it through and the Seahawks will move out to a 14-7 lead. Commander seven. [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] after the TD. My Meyers comes on now to kick it away. to return. It’s McAffrey and he’s brought down right at the 25 yd line. The Commanders offense ready to get back at it. They trail now 14-7 as they’ll come up for first and 10. [Music] Now Daniels, he is hit before he can get rid of it. And down he goes. This is the epitome of team defense. Not only are you able to rush the passer and put relentless pressure on him, play after play, but the coverage on the back end is so tight. There’s just nowhere for the quarterback to go with the ball. You see him just continue to hold the ball that extra second in the pocket. And with the way these guys are pass rushing, that’s all the time they need. So after the loss on first, here’s second and 14. out of the gun. Here’s a run up the gut and he’ll be brought down up past the 35 yd line. A gain of 16 yd. First down Washington. Nice job by them getting the back to the perimeter. Then he’s able to get outside, stick his foot in the ground, and then get vertical. Right down the numbers. Those are the type of runs this offense wants to see more of going forward. That’s into the hands of Lane. He’s got it and he’ll be marked down at the 45 yd line. 19. 19 more on that one. And another first down. First and 10 at the 45 yd line. The thing that jumps out to me the most, Mike, is just how often the quarterback is able to throw the ball to his first read in the progression. So hats off to the play caller. Him and the quarterback seeing the game through the exact same set of eyes. And there is a lot of room to operate. He’ll step up and run and Daniels will have the first down as he’s able to slide and avoid the contact. 17 more yards. That’s another Washington Commander. They got to do a better job of keeping the quarterback contained in the pocket all week. Mike, against mobile quarterbacks, you talk about rushing as a group. This time they get a little undisiplined with their rush lane integrity and he makes him pay off the RPO. This one to McLaren and he’ll be out of bounds. A pickup out of bounds at the 23 yd line. A gain of five brings up second and five. from the 23. Here’s second and five. Slot man in motion left. On second down, it’s Daniels. He’s got room to roam and they’ll have first and goal. He is down inside the 10 yd line. I always think you can tell pretty quickly how comfortable a quarterback is in their offense, Mike, by how fast they work through their progression and get the ball to their check down underneath. And in this case, with the depth of the defense, a lot of space in the short game, get them the ball, pick up the first down. The motion man here is Mccclure [Applause] from the shotgun. It’s Daniels. He pulls it in around the five. All right. So, anytime you’re facing the blitz, the best thing you can do as an offense is just get the ball out of your hand. Get into the hands of receiver. Run after catch in this case. Nice job by the defense rallying to the ball. Modest game. The ball right on the 5 yd line. Second down and goal. Keep it in the air. Here’s Daniels. This offensive line just has no answers right now. It’s another sack. Mike, this isn’t real complicated. You’re just not going to win a lot of NFL games when you continue to give up sacks at the rate that they are. I mean, this is just a complete disaster for this offensive line. And if they don’t get it fixed, this game could be a runaway. This the eighth play of this drive and it’s third and goal. Third and goal. It’s Daniels. That one incomplete. They can’t hook up there. And that incompletion takes us to the two-minute warning. On fourth down, the Commanders send out Matt Gay to try the field goal. This about as short as you can get. Gay’s kick is good. And the Commanders are back within four at 14- 10. Sanders 10. Yeah, he does a nice job handling that kick there, but I think offensively you come back to the sideline and you’re thinking we have to find a way to finish these drives. I mean, to be in first and goal and settle for three, that can be very deflating for an offense settling for too many field goals after the field goal. Back out is Gay to kick this one off. This one taken at the seven. He’ll get across the 20. Mark him down 23 yd line. Well, Seahawks offense and Kenneth Walker ready to take over once more. And he’s been a big component of the passing game so far. You see the numbers here in the first half. This defense going to need to find a way to key in on him because he’s eating them up right now. Operating from their own 23, they’ll begin first and 10 working out of the gun. It’s Darnold and he can’t hang on through the contact. Incomplete. Good job defensively to meet him just as the ball was arriving. It’ll bring up second down. All things considered, it’s actually a pretty good pass. I mean, he puts the ball in a place where only his guy can catch it, but I think he hears those footsteps coming from that nearest defender and he’s not able to secure the catch through contact. And the rush gets home. He’ll go down. They got him. The Commanders will signal for the first of their timeouts. Talk things over before third down. [Applause] Here’s Darnold. And this is going to be incomplete. That is great work there making things difficult defensively. It’ll set up a fourth down. The offense just couldn’t seem to get anything going that drive. They knew they had a long way to go taking over possession that deep in their own territory. You want to pick up that first down and see if you can capitalize some momentum. instead the errant throw and brings up fourth down and they’re going to have to punt it away. This will be returned from the other side of midfield. And not much doing there. They made sure he would not get free. The Commander offense ready to see what they can do. They’ll see if they can put something together here beginning with first and 10. operating from the gun. It’s Dash and he’s going to go down yet again. He has been under fire all game long. Leonard Williams getting in there to drop him. It’ll be a loss of seven to start this drive. Daniels to throw on second down. That’s caught down field. Mcccluren brings it incl and he’s going to be taken down at the 30 yd line. A big play at a critical juncture in this game. and even 30 yards. And it’s hardly an exaggeration when I say, Mike, that he’s probably one of the most difficult individual assignments in the entire league. It’s like playing football against that really good kid in your neighborhood. He’s just hard to cover. And plays like this, it just shows how special he can be. And this takes him into the red zone. He’s brought down inside the 20 yd line. four yards. Now a timeout here by Washington. That is their second. They’ll stop it with 40 seconds remaining in this first half. [Music] So here’s a first and 10 now down inside the 20. A handoff as they try to run it here. And he finds some space. Tackled after a gain of seven on first down. Tariq Woolen on the tackle. It’s a gain of eight. Brings up second and two at the Seahawks 11 yd line. Here’s second and two. [Applause] The tight end Z in motion. Play action. Here’s Daniels flushed to his left. He’ll run again. Now the Commanders will use their third and final timeout and they’ll chance to talk things over after picking up that first down. Matt Gay coming on for this field goal try. About as short as you can get. He is two for two. That kick is good. And the Commanders are back within a point. It’s 1413. By today’s kicking standard, Mike, this is clearly a chip shot. I don’t know if there was a lot of question that he’d make this one. So, nice job making sure you end the half on a high note, coming away with three. So, two seconds left to play and the kicks away. The return team going to let that one go. It’ll go through the end zone. It’s a touchback at their own 35 yd line. [Applause] From the 35, it’s first and 10. To throw is Darnold. And that is incomplete. One final chance. does not work out. Time has expired. The first half has come to an end. Okay, Mike, thanks very much. Welcome into the Orlando studios. Scott Hansen with you on an abridged halftime report. Good competitive first half. This game kind of has a punch counter punch feel to it as reflected on the scoreboard. Tight game going into the second half. Can either team pull away to find out? Let’s go back to the stadium and our broadcast team, Mike Trico and Greg Olsen, Scott, thank you. Both teams trying to find the right formula as they come out for the second half. It’s about to get underway. Certainly a tightly contested first half and you’d expect more of that here in the second half. A one-point game as quarter three begins and it’ll be brought down past the 25. Decent field position to start this drive. The Commander offense ready to get going again. They’ll have it first in this third quarter. The deficit is one as they’ll search now for that go-ahead score. [Applause] The third quarter begins with a run and he’ll get back to the line of scrimmage. That’s about all. Well, they try to get the run game started here early on this drive, Mike. And they’re just going to have to do a better job up front. There’s really nowhere for this ball carrier to go. You never want to lose yards on first down, but that’s exactly the case here. Lost one on the last play, so now it’s second and 11. working out of the gun. It’s Daniels on the run to the right. 22 yds. The pick up there. Good for a Commander first down. It’s a gain of 22 yds. That’s good for a Commander first down. First and 10 at the 47 yd line. This is an element to his game that we don’t necessarily spend a lot of time talking about. He’s not known as a traditional runner at the quarterback position, but when he has some space like he had here, he is more than capable of not only converting first downs, but picking up big chunk plays. The motion man here is Mccclure. He’ll get this out wide and he’ll get about eight on that one. Most of it coming after the catch. It’s second down. Eight yds on the pickup. Brings up second and two at the 44 yd line. [Applause] Up the middle they go. And I don’t think he got there. Wrapped up at the line of scrimmage. And now you’re looking at third down. And after that short run puts them a little bit closer to the first down marker. And they’re going to need to create more running room on the ground if they plan on extending this drive. Third and a yard. It’s the quarterback with a sneak and that one shut down pretty quickly. He’ll get back to the line of scrimmage. Nothing more. When done correctly, Mike, this is just such a high percentage call. It’s kind of hard to choose another play off your call sheet. It’s impossible to defend. You can know it’s coming, stack the box, whatever you want to do, but most of the time they’ll just drive forward and pick up the first down. off the zone read. Daniel’s going to hang on to it and he’s going to be out of bounds down inside the 25 yd line. A gain there of 21. First down Washington. And this is really an area, Mike, that he excels in. He makes the right decision to keep the ball himself and then when he hits the hole, he doesn’t stop until he picks up the first down. The tight end Z in motion. I’ll give on the ground and a good run there. Going to get him five yards. Tackle made at the 16 yd line. It’s a pickup of six. Brings up second and four. They’ll work now on second and four. [Applause] They’ll stick with him again. And not much there. Good defense held to no game. These edge rushers, they are judged by their sack totals, Mike. They love to rush the passer. They have responsibilities in the run game as well. Great job here, keeping it to no gain. Backfield empties. Five receivers in the formation for third down and five. He’ll try to run for it and he will get into the end zone. Jaden Daniels touchdown Washington. His second TD of the game and this one gives his team the lead. And that is now a pair of rushing touchdowns. The quarterback giving it to them, Greg, with his legs in this one. And we’re starting to see, Mike, why this week this coaching staff told us they’re encouraging this guy to do this more often. His ability to be a passer, but also a rusher is an element to this offense that is hard for defenses to account for. So that Daniels and the Commanders offense going to go for two line up for the two-point conversion. Off the play fake, here’s Daniels. The attempt at the two-point conversion is no good. So, they decide to put the ball in the air, which I don’t mind on this two-point try, but execution was just a little bit off, and it’s not going to work out in their favor this time around. It’s not fun here, boys. So after the touchdown, here’s Gay kick this one away. A return now from the four. He’ll work his way across the 25 yd line. Well, Seahawks offense ready for their first possession of this second half. The deficit is five. So they’ll try to put a drive together here and they’ll begin it with first and 10 on play action. Here’s Darnold. Short pass taken in by the tight end and that keeps him ahead of schedule. That’s a first down completion of seven yards. There’s no more efficient play in the NFL, Mike, than the playaction passing game. And you can see here why. You make the defense have to honor both the run and the pass. And he’s able to pick up a nice game to his tight end. The run up the middle. It’s Walker and not much there. He’s back to the original line. No gain on that one. And while that run wasn’t anything really to write home about, what it allows them to do, Mike, is keep everything in the playbook at their disposal. Third and short, now it’s up to these coaches to dial up their best short yardage play and extend this drive. On third and a yard, here’s Darnold and he’s out of bounds up beyond the 45 yd line. That screen goes for 12 and that’s a first down. All right, Mike. So, the way they teach these screen plays to the offensive lineman is you got to stop the defender’s feet. You just don’t want him to get a free clean rush to the quarterback cuz you’re so worried about getting out in front of the back. Make him start his rush over again before you slip out. Ball gets dumped right over the rusher’s head. Bang. Now you’re in the open field. So, the offense trots out the old jumbo package. So they bring out three tight ends, big bodies, but the defense kind of sees it coming. They’ve got to change it up. You can’t be so predictable. Big bodies run, small bodies pass. And I think that’s a little bit of what’s going on here. Second and 11. Darnold. Now the throw. A throw on the move is caught. And it looks like he’s going to come up just short of a first down. Out of bounds a yard shy of what they needed. They’ll have to pick it up on third down. Let’s give some credit to this offensive line. Once they identified the blitz, you could see them communicating with one another to make sure everybody is on the same page. And that’s what gave the quarterback enough time and found the open man trying to find any CV he can. But the push too strong in the middle. He didn’t get there. It’s fourth down. The Seahawks sending out their punts. He’s on to punt it for the fourth time tonight. [Applause] This is going to get out of bounds inside the 15 yd line. The Commander offense and their running back getting set for this next possession. The lead is five as they’re going to start with this first down. [Applause] Daniels going to keep it on the zone read. An ideal beginning to this drive. 24 on the first play. A gain of 24 yds and a Commander first down. This defense has had their share of troubles trying to contain this quarterback today, Mike. This time they go to the zone read. The defender goes after the running back and the quarterback pulls it, keeps it himself, and has a huge gain for a first down. And he’ll get back to the line of scrimmage. That’s about all. You could just see the frustration on the running back’s face as he’s getting helped up off the ground. Mike, there was just nowhere to go from the moment he was handed the ball. Give credit to the defense. Great job. We’ll try again. It’s second and 10 throwing is Daniels under pressure and down he goes. They got him. Demarcus Lawrence in for the sack. It is a loss of eight and now it’s third down. And this defense, they just continue to put in a great night’s work. I mean, Mike, you think whether it’s been blitz schemes, stunts, whatever you name it, this offensive line has had its hands full. They have allowed their quarterback to be hit way too many times. Work to do following the sack. It is third and long. [Applause] from the shotgun on third down. Daniels, that is incomplete. Great work to get in there, make things difficult defensively and it sets up fourth down. I think as the offense comes to the sideline now, the quarterback and his wide receivers need to get together and say, “Hey guys, what are you seeing out there? How can we find some open targets?” cuz on that last down there was nowhere to go with the ball. The Commanders set to kick this one away. And he’ll get forward a few yards on the return. And that’s where the offense will take over. The Seahawks offense ready to take over possession of the football. They’ll start it here with a first and 10. [Applause] This drive starts on the ground with Walker and he’ll manage to get this ahead for a pick up a foul. He was brought down at the 45 yd line. A six-yd pickup brings up second and four. Ball spotted at the 45. Here’s second down and four. He’ll keep it on the ground and keep it with Walker. Kenneth Walker. A gain of nine yards. And the offensive line does a really nice job winning this play at the point of attack. And once he got the ball, all he had to really do was just find a crease and hit it. And he’s able to pick up the first down. They’ll break the huddle coming up now for first and 10. From the shotgun. Here’s Darnold. He’ll be forced to just throw that one away. It’s incomplete. That throwaway certainly isn’t ideal in this situation, especially when you’re trailing at this stage of the game. But no damage done. Move on to the next play. They’ll try again here. Second and 10. Darnold to throw. Work in the middle of the field, but that is incomplete. Jackson Smith. Jackson Smith and Jigba, the intended receiver and it’s going to bring up a third down. You talk about a quarterback getting bailed out. Man, that is a pick all day long. And as this defender enters the huddle, you see a bunch of his guys hitting him on the helmet, but I could promise you they’re saying next time you got to come down with that one. Throwing off his back foot and it’s taken in. And a good short tackle right there. It stops him a good distance short of the marker. It sets up fourth down. I think this is one of those plays that when the ball carrier watches this back in the film room tomorrow, he’s going to be a little frustrated with himself. If he could just have made that one guy miss, he picks up the first down. Instead, he gets brought down short of the sticks. And now they got a fourth down decision to make. And no return forthcoming. hits a touch back and will come out to the 20 yd line. The Commanders offense and Jaden Daniels ready to take over once more. And this defense has got to be at its wits end trying to come up with a way to keep him contained. He’s had so many opportunities to tuck it and go and he’s turned a number of those into big plays. The drive begins at the 20. Here’s first and 10. [Applause] on the zone read. Here’s Daniels and he’s taken down but not until he gets to the 32 yd line. That one good for a dozen and a very quick first down. First and 10 at the 32 yd line. And we’re starting to see the fruits of their labor paying off here. here. I mean, they’ve used this run game to throw a bunch of body blows throughout the entire contest. And while some of the carries didn’t result in much at the time, it’s clear they’re starting to take its toll on this defense. They’ll get about four here as he is taken down. This pitching catch may have looked routine, but I promise you, Mike, these types of anticipatory throws, especially outside the numbers, they don’t occur without countless reps, often times when nobody’s even watching. So, from the 37, here’s second and six. A short one there. He’s got Z and he’s going to be out of bounds just shy of midfield. A pickup of 12 yards. Good for a Commander first down. Every quarterback’s dream is, can I get the ball out of my hand as fast as possible and get it to a guy that can do the rest after the catch, and it seems like nowadays throughout the entire league, the best offenses thrive in yards after the catch. And he’ll get back to the line of scrimmage. That’s about all. Right at the line of scrimmage. No gain on the play. second and 10. So, three quarters now in the books and Sunday Night Prime Time continues after this. Second and 10. Daniels now going to look to throw. There’s Z. He’s got it right side and they’ll move this one down inside the 40 yd line. That’s a pair of hookups on this drive. This one goes for 14 yds and a first down. A lot could go wrong anytime you decide to put the ball in the air here late in the fourth quarter as you’re trying to run out the clock and protect this lead. But at the same time, I like that they haven’t gone super conservative. Just hand off right, hand off left, and it just turns into tackling practice. So, I like the balance of making the defense defend everything cuz right now possess the ball, protect the ball, and ultimately just run the clock out. Jaylen 10 yd on the pick. It’s second and inches at the 27. Enviable spot to operate from. Here’s second and inches. Here’s Daniels. And they get to him and finally bring him down. It will go down as a sack. You can tell that all these hits, Mike, they’re starting to add up. He just doesn’t look comfortable. His eyes aren’t downfield. You can see his feet aren’t settled. When you get sacked this many times in a game, it’s kind of hard to blame him, but he’s definitely feeling it. [Applause] Third and two. Here’s Daniels. He’s got the veteran Zacks and the defense can’t come up with a stop there. Gain of seven and a first down. Washington first down. And at this stage of the game, every first down gets them one step closer to being able to finish this one out. This defense has to find a way to get off the field. They have to get the ball back to their offense to give them a chance. They’ll motion over Samuel. From the shotgun, it’s a give up the middle and he’ll take this forward for about three. It’s second down and play halted for a moment. We have an injured Seahawk player and as the medical staff looks him over, we’ll step aside. here’s second and six [Applause] throwing now. Daniel, he finds the veteran Hers. And it’ll be a short pick up that’s not enough for the first down. That’s a gain of five. So, the hope is when you call these underneath drag routes, you’re trying to have your tight end come out the backside of the defense in space. So, when you put the ball on them early, it leads to big yards after the catch. In this case, they don’t get the real big play they were hoping for, but they’ll definitely take it. And he will have the Commander first down. They’re able to convert, albeit not by much, but they get it on third and a yard. Another Washington Commander first down. I don’t want to take anything away from the quarterback here, Mike. He did a nice job picking up that first down, but this play is won or lost by the big guys up front. They’re the ones who need to get off the snap on time, get leverage on the defender, and create the space needed for the quarterback to pick up the first down at this stage in the fourth quarter. Great job by the defense understanding exactly what the offense is trying to do. They’re trying to bleed the clock, shorten the game. They completely sold out to stop the run. Able to take him down for a loss. Last play went the wrong way. It sets up second along. It’s second down and 12. And he’s going to be dropped after a pick up of about five. I really like the balance that they’ve showed so far on this drive, Mike. And what that does is it makes the defense have to defend the entire field, the run game and the pass game. Everything looks the same. There’s no tells, so they can’t afford to just dial up certain schemes to take away a run or a pass. They’ve got to defend the entire playbook. And so far, they’ve done a great job on this drive doing just that. He’s looking for room on the edge, but could not find any. They track him down behind the line and it’s fourth down. It’s almost like the defense knew the back was getting the ball there because from the moment the ball was snapped, there was a defender all over him and he’s able to bring him down for a loss. So out comes Matt Gay in a big spot. This to stretch the lead to a touchdown. 31 yd attempt and this one right down the middle. It’s good. A big three points as they extend their fourth quarter lead. And this is what you want. I mean, you clearly have the advantage, but you want to continue to apply pressure. Can you score every time you get the ball? They’re able to do that here. They tack on three and extend their lead. After the field goal, back out is Gay to kick this one off. This taken at the five. He’ll get this past the 20 before he’s brought down of the 25 yd line. Out comes the Seattle offense as they get ready for their next possession. They’ll begin with first and 10. [Applause] Now Darnold Smith and Jigba left side. He’s got it. That’s a nice pickup on a first down throw. It’s a gain of eight. Just take what the defense is giving you. When you can stay ahead of the chains and just take these easy pitch and catch throws underneath hitch routes, quick game, now it puts you in a lot more favorable down in distances to eventually attack this defense a little bit more downfield. Stafford fires to cup and they’ll pick up the first down. A gain of about four. a gain of four. So, there’s a saying in the NFL, Mike, short throw, long catch. And that’s exactly what they wanted to go with here. Operate in the quick game, don’t stress the protection. And while he didn’t get necessarily the big play, he does get enough to move the chains. On first and 10, here comes Walker. A nice pickup moving it across the 40. We’ll give him six on that play. And as of right now, they find themselves trailing at the moment, but it’s certainly not because of the ground game. He’s averaging over four yards per carry. Just hasn’t been enough to overcome some of their shortcomings elsewhere. Darnold. And that ball incomplete over the middle. Incomplete. I know this play results in an incomplete pass, but I think this is a really good job by the quarterback. His clock was going off. He felt that rush. He had no immediate target to go to with the ball. Instead, throw it away. Don’t take the sack. Live for another day. Oh, maybe a free play as he’ll look to throw it. He’ll try and set up the tight end screen and he’s down inside the 40 yd line. Offside defense. [Applause] [Applause] Ball rests at the 37. It’s first and 10. Off the play fake. Here’s Darnold. Pushed out to his left. Now he’ll run it. Initially, Mike, a really good job by the defense. Nowhere to go with the ball for this quarterback. He’s forced to pull it down and turn into a runner. Little slow reaction and he’s able to actually pick up a pretty good game. [Applause] Ball on the 28 yd line. Here’s second and a yard on the handoff. This is Walker and he’ll get nothing here. Back to the line of scrimmage and that’s all. Amos on the stop. A gain of a yard. Brings up third and inches. A big play looming here. They need to convert. It is third and inches and right to the 25 yd line. That is enough for the first down. So they pick it up on the ground and the drive keeps going. First down. Well, here’s where you really see the value of having a good run. Third and short, fourth and short. The ability to just keep it simple, win up front, turn around, hand the ball to your back, and to say, “Okay, more likely than not, we’re going to get a fresh set of downs, maintain possession, and now continue to find opportunities to go generate points. A modest game, maybe two yards. It’s second down. Javan on the tackle. It’s a pick up of three. brings up second and seven at the 22 yd line operating from the gun. It nowhere to go. He is taken down. With the right personnel, the safety position is like the ultimate chess piece, right? You can put him in center field to play pass. You can bring him up and make him a pseudo linebacker, but you also can bring him on pressure, Mike. And that’s what this guy does so well. The timing and the speed. He got there in a hurry. [Applause] They need one right now. Third and long working out of the gun. It’s Darnold. That’s taken in by Horton. That is well done there. Converting on third and 15. It’s a gain of 18 and the Seahawks first down. And this is a tricky part of the game for any defense. You find yourself protecting a late lead. And the age-old question is, do you remain aggressive? Do you try to just keep the ball from being thrown over your head and make everything be tackled and played in front of you? That’s what every defensive coordinator struggles with. So, they can’t get too soft here as they try to hold on to this lead here late. Cooper Cup was the intended receiver and it’ll lead to a second down. Here’s Darnold. Get this complete to Horton who is brought down. That pass is going to pick up four and bring up third down. brings up the receiver thought he had a nice soft spot in that zone coverage and he settles down to give a nice target to the quarterback, but the defense had eyes on him the entire time. Secure rally tackle prevents that from turning into a big play. So, two minutes left to play in the second half. Greg and I back gone EA Sports after this. The offense having a tough time with this noise. It’s third and six. They’ll drop to throw. That is incomplete. Here we go. They’re down to what could be their final play. Fourth down. They desperately needed that one. Mike, down here late. They’ve only got a few remaining snaps to go and it puts all of the pressure of the game now on fourth down. Let’s see what play call they have in a got to have it situation. And right now, this quarterback needs to make his best throw in the biggest moment of the game. Now or never, they’ll throw on fourth down. And he’s going to go down. The pressure too much. And that should wrap this one up as they have to give it up on downs. Washington. They go three tight ends here on first and 10. They’ll begin here on the ground now. Seattle going to use the first of their timeouts and they’ll get together prior to this second down play. A gain of two brings up second and eight. The tight end Z in motion. [Applause] They’ll go play action here with Daniels. That’s going to be incomplete coverage. Very good there. Contact jarring the ball loose and it’s going to force third down. He was trying to hook up with Debo Samuel that time and it’ll be third down. Operating from the gun. It’s Daniels taking off. He’ll try to get there. Big run here. He’s tackled beyond the 35 yd line. Timeout Seahawks. That is their second. They’ll be disappointed there after giving up the first down. First 10 at the 37 yd line. [Applause] They motion the slot man left on first down. Daniels that’s into the hands of the lane. He’s got it now. Seattle will use the final timeout and will take it with just over 90 seconds left on the clock. Similar to a tight end, the slot receiver is often considered the safety blanket. He makes all the difficult catches, tends to be a little bit more around the line of scrimmage, and so far today, he’s certainly lived up to that reputation. Second and seven. [Applause] To throw is Daniels. He’ll try to hit him with a screen and he’s taken down inside the opponent’s 35. a gain there of 27 yd and that first down should all but do it. Mike, with only one remaining timeout, the defense just can’t stop the clock enough. Got to imagine it’s victory formation and we’re a couple kneels away from this game being over. Victory very much in sight now as they’ll take a knee. [Applause] So, it’s a win here for the Commanders. And it was their defense that led the way as they pitched a shut out in the second half. No points allowed. And they cruise to victory. And that’ll do it for my partner Greg Olson. For our entire team, I’m Mike Trico. This has been a presentation of the NFL on EA Sports. The Commanders are winners. As we say, so long from just outside our nation’s capital.
