Miami Dolphins, GM Chris Grier mutually agree to part ways | Pro Football Talk | NFL on NBC
Well, change has indeed come for the Miami Dolphins, who were embarrassed at home last night by the Baltimore Ravens, 28-6. Record of 2-7. It’s not a full house cleaning, though. Out is general manager Chris Greer. Now, that’s significant. He’s been with the team since the 2000 season. He got there roughly 10 years before Steven Ross took over as owner. He’s been the general manager for the past decade. Now, career gone. They’re calling it a mutual partying, but how mutual is it really? Regardless, he’s out and Champ Kelly, senior personnel executive, takes over. It’s the GM. Couple of things to say here. First of all, it’s a fairly important time for the Dolphins. We’re four days away from the trade deadline. And they seem to be in sell mode. To the extent that any trades are done and offers need to be evaluated, decisions need to be made. Champ Kelly will be making those decisions apparently subject to the final approval of ownership obviously if any of these players that the Dolphins may be interested in moving are indeed traded the new team. So it is a pivotal moment and there is going to be a lot of work that needs to be done between now and Tuesday at 400 p.m. Eastern. The other side of it is coach Mike McDaniel is safe. He had his press conference on Friday morning. He wasn’t fired at the time that the Greer mutual partying was announced. There are reports that McDaniel is indeed staying. But do we really think that he’s going to be there next year, week one? I’m a firm believer in avoiding what appears to be a half measure. This feels like a half measure. You either get rid of everyone or you get rid of no one. And let’s play this out. They hire a new general manager after the season and then that person decides whether or not they’re going to keep Mike McDaniel. That doesn’t make any sense. It seems to me that it’s just a matter of time before McDaniel is gone. And I’m a firm believer that once you’ve decided to move on from your coach, the right thing to do for everyone is to move on from your coach. Because now your coach is going to be expecting it and that’s going to hover over his work, his preparation. And I know he said he never thinks about it, but come on. How could you not think about it? How could you you not be distracted by the question of is it going to happen next week after the Bills home game? Is it going to happen after the game in Madrid against the Commanders during the by-week? Is it going to just happen after the final game of the regular season? So, dysfunctional teams do dysfunctional things and it is dysfunctional to have your GM and your head coach on two different tracks. the teams that get it have everyone together and either everyone goes or everyone stays. In this case, if you’re going to pick one or the other, you could make the argument that Greer needed to go because Greer’s responsible for the roster and the roster just hasn’t been good enough. Throw on top of it the fact that Greer is the person who presumably signed off on giving Tuatangaba a new contract in 2024 when he had a $23.2 million fifth year option. They could have done the franchise tag thing. They could have waited to sign into a long-term deal after his rookie deal expired. Who were they competing with when they gave him 150 million fully guaranteed over three years? That was a bad contract. Even if they’d gone fifth year option, franchise tag, franchise tag, it would have been about 110 million. They gave him an extra 40 million. And now they’re stuck with 50 plus million next year fully guaranteed. So a new regime is going to be handcuffed by this Tuatonga by law contract. What does that do as a practical matter? It becomes a factor for candidates who have options. If I’m in demand and I’m looking at one job where I’ve got a free and clear path to make my decisions about the roster, including quarterback, that’s going to be more attractive to me than going to a place where job number one, what do we do with this $54 million obligation? Do we keep him on the team and just not play him? Do we find a way to trade him and get somebody to pay some of his salary or do we just cut the cord? That’s going to be something that that will cause anyone who has multiple teams pursuing his services to say maybe this isn’t the right time to go become the coach or the GM of the Miami Dolphins. So, they’ve got many issues. There’s not much that a new GM can do during the season. You want to make the team better now. And Ross’s statement says it’s urgent to make things better now. GM’s not going to do much to make things better now. The coach is the one who can, if anyone, make things better now. The reality is things aren’t going to get better for the Dolphins. I wonder at some level, is this an effort by Ross both to plate the fans and continue on a path toward tanking toward having the highest possible draft picks in every round next year? Regardless, for now, Chris Greer is out. And it feels like eventually, if not inevitably, Mike McDaniel will be out as well. And those jobs will not be as attractive as they could be for next year because of the lingering financial obligation to quarterback Tuata Bala. Hi, it’s Mike Florio. Boycott t u a for the whole season
YES YES YES YES YES! Daniel Bryan Fist pumps OMG They DID IT, Wow, amazing i'm counting this as a win for them this season. and i'm sure he's prolly next too but whats cool is, got fired before Mcdaniels, This mess isn't Mcdaniels fault at all, The fire order was done right, Stephen Ross doesn't usually do anything right, this might be the 1st or 2nd right thing. Next best move might be rehiring, Brian Flores actually. O_O getting ahead of myself. i'm just excited, urgh good riddance.
Goated move. Watch the dolphins actually start making smart offseason moves now. McDaniel was never the problem
He even looks stupid, thumbnail is cruel 😂
Could be his brother's last year for the Ducks if he has another toliet year in the NHL
Ross is notorious in doing half measures. This approach saves the Hidden Tanking (allowing incompetents to thrive losing more games). Sending a 5’9" RB on a fade route, in the end zone, against a 6’4" DB is an excellent tanking idea. Although on competent teams, I believe it is the reverse situation. The WR is 6’4" and the DB is 5’9". The beauty of the hidden tanking is fully exposed. Incompetence is the key component in any successful tanking in the NFL. Three weak teams still on schedule to ruin Hidden Tanking strategy. Will Ross trade key components to off-set this risk?
Hey Mike, we’re just happy to get rid of Grier. The new GM will most definitely hire their guy for head coach
Grier is the longest tenured GM in NFL history without a single playoff win
They hire a new GM now. Let McDaniel hang on long enough to get you great draft position, then you launch him.
I sometimes wonder if these general managers only have football sense and no financial sense. As a Broncos fan, I have watched George Paton do some really ignorant things financially while I think he has an ability to recognize talent he doesn’t understand dollars and cents.
McDaniel is the only HC inept enough that guarantee us a 1or 2 draft pick. He should not go anywhere until the last game.
He look like DC
You can't overpay & convince guys to come on your team bc of the weather & not leaders
POP BOTTLES DOLPHIN FANS THIS IS THE BIGGEST WIN OF THE SEASON THUS FAR!!
This is the perfect move, keep McDaniel this season and next, let him steer the boat onto the rocks while a competent GM resets the roster and ends up with high picks in 2027. A full on tank and reset may be able to clear the stench of 10 disastrous Grier years.
Dolphins need to get Bill Belichick and Mike Lombardi to turn this ship around.
Bidding war for Mcdaniels to be a teams New OC is about to begin. Hoping Brady gets on the conflict of interest phone and lands him for the Raiders.
another DEI hire bites the dust
I feel like someone on the Falcons should have been fired after last night.
How did that guy keep his job as long as he did?
Fantastic!!!! The mediocre HIGHTLY OVERRATED PROSPECT OF QB NAMED TUA, IN WHATEVER WAY, SHAPE OR FORM MOST GO NOW!!!!!!!!
Sign SHEDEUR NOW and make him a starter to be ready for 2026!! bench or deal MEDIOCRE TUA.
Translation: He quit before he was fired.
We want McDaniel to stay and get rid of Grier and Tua
To quote a great Philly street poet, "I used to pray for times like this"
3:33 Im pretty sure Tua's contract is the main reason MMD is still around
Confidently and honestly tanking is strategy. Adios Chuckles Grier. McDaniel is a very good run game coordinator with a weak and injured O line again.
FINALLY!
Next up: TUA (please)
Well, the partial housecleaning makes sense if you want Belichick as your next coach. What if that conversation has already happened and Belichick said he wants the job but it can't happen until UNC has played its last game? McDaniel serves a purpose until then. And if Belichick is your next coach you won't need a GM because Belichick will wear both hats just as he did at New England.
McDanilel is done coach walking. I'll bet there's a betting line on when he gets fired!
BOUT TIME, NOW FIRE COACH MIKE, & BENCH TUA…🎉🎉🎉
It's smart to keep McDaniel for the rest of the season. The owner is smart enough to know that he wants the highest draft pick possible at this point. McDaniel is gonna make the team lose and get them a high pick. The owner is hoping to go 2-15. They only fired the GM because they don't want him to F up the trade deadline.
26 years with the franchise and not 1 playoff win! Grier loved the injury prone players!
Until they get rid of all front mgmt the Dolphins will still have a bad front office. This gives a chance for it to improve but only if they get rid of vp player personnel. You have to amputate everything to get rid of the cancer here. The contracts he signed are no viable for any team ever.
I’m convinced Chris Greer was playing franchise mode on Madden. How can you just give people these crazies salaries and unbreakable contracts?
Yet another DEI hire.
