Greg Newsome II & Travis Etienne Jr. On Coen’s Impact and Bye Week Reset | Jacksonville Jaguars
like in Cleveland, we played man coverage pretty much, you know, all the time. So, I wasn’t in a lot of zone um things, but I think now, like just like I said, understanding what they want from me. Um I’ve been able to to see that. So, um I’m definitely super excited moving forward and just to make some more plays out there. What have you kind of learned from the other guys in the corner about the other guys in the corner since you got here? Like Travis, Buster, Jay? Yeah. Um they’re dogs. Like I love to compete from from all of them. Like we all want to be out there. where we all want to play hard, but the biggest thing is like it’s a family. Like you’re stepping in like leaving Cleveland, like I I had a very family feel and coming here, I feel the exact same way. Like guys want each other to succeed. Uh guys are selfless. Um and guys are willing to teach people. So um I I really appreciate him for that. Thank you for uh for me uh taking on a guy like Max Cros or uh Brock Bowers. What’s the game plan for him? Yeah. Um I’d be super excited. Um he’s a he’s a great player. We have a lot of great players. So, um, a guy like that that’s just super physical but can run routes at a very elite level. Um, it’ll be a fun fun game. But, you know what I’m saying? As a competitor, these are these are the games that we want. How crucial was it seeing that accountability speech and being a part of that team room from the opponent going viral, people seeing that kind of access and him taking a kind of his own part in that. Yeah. I think when your when your leader takes accountability, it’s easy for, you know, guys underneath to take accountability. Um, so that just shows what type of team, shows what type of coach he is. Like he’s not one of those coaches that are just going to point fingers at the players. So that gives us like motivation. That gives us um a sense of like we want to play for a guy like that. So I’m super super proud and like super like it’s great that he did that cuz it definitely makes me want to play for him even more. Last one for me. Uh I think people are getting overlooked about the two losses, but Jags are still in playoff contention. What’s it like to be going into the bye-week, coming out of bye and still being playoff uh Yeah. Um it’s it’s great. Like I said, at the end of the day, we just got to take it a game at a time. Um and it’s going to start this week, but uh just still being in the in the in the neck in the thick of things is is great. Like we’re in a amazing position right now. Um and we just got to just take it day by day, game game game at a time. And I think at the end of the season, we’ll be where we want to be. I mean, perfect. You’ve been traveling a bunch this year. So, what do you do on the by-week? Uh, yeah. So, uh, my by-week, it was my daughter’s birthday, um, October 1st, so I threw her her first birthday party. Um, I went back to Arizona, kicked it with my fiance and my daughter, and just just spent a lot of time with the family. What did you find out about the offense, the by-week, and and then personally, what did you, you know, take away from your game in the first seven games? I just take away uh, what I took away from the offense as a whole. We just uh we haven’t played our best football yet. We’ve been shooting ourselves in the foot, but that’s not to say we can’t be our bestelves in the second half of the season. So, I feel like everybody had a chance to reflect on what we did. And I feel like it was more of a situation where like how can I be better to help my teammates? How can I do my be my best self? So, I helped the 111 and everybody do their job. And what I just took away just watching my brother play uh after the game talking to him. He was like uh he was talking to Rico and they talking about their situation, how things going and it just provided me just the um just perspective. It’s all about perspective. My brother, he was just happy to go out there and be a punt returner, be a kick returner, get two carries, and uh I feel like whenever you just have perspective and just understanding the way you are and just being great where your feet are, you just have to focus on that, you know. So, I feel like for me, the last 10 games of the season, it’s all we have guaranteed. And just be my best self each and every week. Don’t take anything for granted because I had that uh the injury that season and the injury to where excuse me to where I couldn’t I couldn’t play. I couldn’t uh dress out. I I just sat and watched. So, just to be grateful to go out there and play on Sundays, that’s all I can ask for. And I just got to just work doing it. We my best self so I can put a great product on that field each and every Sunday. Liam said today he’s got to call more run plays because this offense is so much better when they’re balanced, right? What do you think about recommitting to the run, I guess? I mean, I love that. I mean, obviously I’m a running back, you know. I love when the ball is in my hand. One of the reasons I started playing the game to go out there and make plays. Uh I feel like I’m very special with the ball in my hand. But for me, it is more so just executing whatever coach call, you know. Uh having the ability to do less or more, just making myself more special. Just uh just just go out there and make plays whenever my name is called, you know. So that way they can keep calling my name. If they don’t call my name, I’m still making things right, you know? Just being great with and without the ball. I feel like that’s what I want to focus on going forward. Just taking one game at a time. What does the balance do though for for Trevor in the pass game? Uh it opens up everything for Trev. I feel like uh if you just go back and look at statist run game going uh we we do really well. So I feel like uh just we got to find that formula of winning and just kind of stick with it and uh just just come out faster. I feel like uh we’ve been shooting ourselves in the foot. I feel like first and foremost we got to control the controllables. If we don’t ever control that, then uh us commit to the run game won’t change anything. Now that you’ve been through it a few times, why is the bye-week so important to just kind of reset and get your mind and body right? Uh it just give you a chance to refocus. I feel like uh it gives you a chance to uh just just sit back, reflect, and just realize you have to fall in love with the mundane. I feel like we’ve been doing this for a very long time since voluntary otaa is just going at it, going at it. So it’s kind of just getting up every day. Guys just kind of just you can kind of get lost and just kind of just um just start looking down on yourself or just not attacking like you should. And I feel like having that by week just give you a chance to reset. I feel like I know when I’m out there watching Sunday football, just watching guys do what they love to do, understand that this is a game. We signed up to play this and uh just not being just not playing. I feel like that kind of just makes me just wish I was out there playing. So why would I take uh Sundays for granted when that’s all I’m guaranteeing? So you you watched football on your Sunday? I actually went to my brother game. Uh it it wasn’t a great game for him, but you know uh I got to see James Cook go for over 200. So just seeing it, I feel like it inspired me to go out there and she let me He could do it, why can’t I, you know? So just uh just being challenged by other people in the league and just watching how they run and just being inspired by others. I feel like uh that’s the only way I could do is have a grow mindset, continue to get better and um just work to be better every every day. What’s it like for you knowing Max Crosby is coming up next? playing against. Yeah, I mean uh just we kept let the game record be the game record. I mean everybody know who messes Karby is. Everybody know who he does. I thought do a great job of just chipping guys just kind of taking them out of the game. I remember just him and Jared versus just going back and forth every game at it all game and it kind of get to a point to where we lining up outside and they’re alerting for the chips. So we taking him out of the game cuz he worried about us, you know. So I feel like we just got to do a great job controlling controller. They know we’re going to chip. So we just got to do a great job executing the chip and uh not let him wreck the game. we going in front of the team and being accountable for that play call, that clip that got out. What does that say to you guys? Just, you know, about him and how he coaches. I feel like uh no, no man is bigger than the program. I feel like when you got a coach that’s accountable, it’s only right, everybody else is accountable. You can’t open the mistakes no matter or loss. I feel like Limbs does a great job. Even we’re winning, he was still being accountable, taking taking it on the chest, you know? So, uh being behind a coach like that, like there’s no hiding, you know. Uh you can’t hide from anything. Everything is on film. regard what you put on your resume and he understands that from a coaching standpoint and I feel like it just triggered down onto the players and that’s when we able to have their growth mindset and continue to get better. I know it’s only the bye week and you still have three games to go but you guys have put yourself in really good playoff contention and going into the bye-week. How’s that feel knowing that you gave you guys some wiggle room in this next second half of the season? Uh I wouldn’t say we gave ourselves wiggle room. Uh there’s no wiggle room in the NFL. I feel like uh you can’t take anything for granted and I feel like for us to get to where we want to be at the end of the season, we just got to take it one game at a time. So, we can’t look over this one trying to look forward to the next one. We just got to make the most opportunity uh this Sunday cuz it’s the next one and and then we worry about at the end of the season whenever that comes we worry about that that when we get
