Before they were breaking down sports on ESPNLA, Mason and Ireland were already calling the action as kids in their own living room. All right, how about this? My parents used to let me turn the sound down on games and call them when I was 10. Oh, wow. I thought when I got older, what great parents that they basically said, we don’t need the sound on the TV. You do it. And look what it led to. Yeah. A couple things come to mind. One, when the Toledo Blade arrived at the house every afternoon, I would read the sports page out loud to my dad. That was how you kind of learned how to That’s how I learned how to to do announceing stuff like I do now. Very, very clean. From childhood playbyplay to LA’s mega sports station, another reason why Mason and Ireland are the OGs of LA Sports Talk. Weekdays at noon on 710 ESPN, the allnew ESPN LA app and live on YouTube. [Music] John Ireland, Michael Thompson with you in Minneapolis. Lakers Wolves. Tonight’s starting lineups brought to you by National University. Official sponsor of the Lakers. Visit nu.edu. First for the visiting Lakers. They will start at one guard. The hottest player in the NBA, Austin Reeves, averaging 41 points a game over his last two. So he’s at one guard, the other guard is Jake Laravia. The center is DeAndre Aton. At one forward, Ruie Hachamura and at the other, Jared Vanderbilt, the head coach of the Lakers is JJ Reic. For the home team, the Minnesota Timberwolves. They will start at one guard, Mike Connley. The other guard is Dante Devincenzo. The center is Rudy Gobear. at one forward Jaden McDaniels and at the other Julius Randall, the head coach of the Wolves is Chris Finch. And you may have noticed I didn’t mention the biggest stars on either team. That’s cuz they’re all out with injuries tonight. For Minnesota, no Anthony Edwards. And for the Lakers, no Luca Donsic, no LeBron James. So, somebody else is going to need to step up here tonight for their team to get a victory. The officials tonight, Tyler Ford, Benzy Ransom, and Derek Collins. Our team is in place. The producer of Laker Basketball and the radio is Michael Funus. Our highlights are provided by Casim Diaate. And it takes two engineers to send our signal across the Lakers radio network. Here in Minneapolis is Grant Wink Stern. And back at our LA live studio is Will Flores. Both teams, Michael, come in with a record of 2 and two. On paper, Minnesota at home should probably be favored, but we thought that in Sacramento on Sunday night and Austin Reeves with the Lakers on his back and led him to victory. What do you expect tonight? Yeah, I expect Minnesota, even though they don’t have Anthony Edwards, I’m sure Chris Fitz probably reminded his team of what happened in Sacramento. So, don’t overlook this Laker team because they’re so short-handed. Don’t take them lightly, especially the way Austin Reeds has been playing and DeAndre Aiden’s picked it up and Rui Hachimura’s played well, too. So, uh I think Chris Finch is warning his team not to take the Lakers lightly tonight because they’re missing so many key players. Well, we talked about maybe Austin Reeves going offensively in Minnesota’s last game two nights ago. They lost to Denver and Jamal Murray, the Nuggets point guard, scored 43 points, including 23 in the third quarter. So, Austin has a chance tonight, Michael, to pick up where Murray left off. But it won’t be easy. Jaden McDaniels, who probably draws Reeves, is a second team alldefense player and known for his defensive ability. So, we’ll see how it goes with that matchup. Lakers wearing their gold uniforms with purple numbers and white trim. The Wolves wearing their black uniforms with white lettering and blue green trim. Let’s see if the Lakers can do it again. They won their first road game in Sacramento. This is road game number two. [Music] Well, the Lakers are playing, you know, with basically we call house money. Nobody’s expecting them to win being so short-handed with so many key players out. Obviously, they still have guys in there who can play, but because they’re so short-handed there, people probably think, “Yeah, they’re they’re underdogs.” So, everybody’s not anticipating we’re going to win. So guys go out there, they play loose, they play free, and the next thing you know, you you play with no pressure on you. Shots start falling and you start playing better and and playing better defense, and you really pull for each other even more when you know you have to count on each other so much because you have so many key players not playing tonight. All right, the Lakers and Wolves have made their way to the floor. You can watch this game on Spectrum Sportsnet with our friends Bill McDonald and Stu Lance and Minnesota native Mike Trudeell on the sidelines or you can watch it on ESPN with Mike Green, Tim Lgo, Richard Jefferson, and our friend George Stano on the sidelines. You got a couple of options tonight if you’re on your way home and you want to watch this game on TV. Rudy Gobear going to jump it up against DeAndre Aton. Aiden got the better Go and out. No good. Rebound Randall. Here comes Minnesota with a chance to take their first lead. Randall drive to the middle of the paint. Elevates. Hook shot in and out and back in again. 108 Minnesota. Here comes Hatram up the right side. one-on-one against Randall. DeAndre Eaton has it against Rudy Goar. Hands the ball off to Austin Reeves. Reeves dribbling. Throws the ball top of the key to Ruie. Now to Lorravia. Loravia dribbling inside the three-point line. He almost lost it. Got it back. Turn. Shoots a tough shot and he hit it. Oh, a tough shot. Looked like a Kobe ball away in his face and Labraia buried it. Game tied at 10. Here’s a back door cut to McDaniels. Got it to Randall. Three-pointer. Good again. Randall was out here like a 430 get those threes up. Wolves 13, Lakers 10. Vanderbilt’s got it in the right corner. Throws the ball into Ruie and he threw it off the side of the backboard. That’s another turnover for the Lakers. Their third. Minnesota doesn’t have any. It’s a terrible pass on Van Go. Didn’t he play here one time? Yeah. Should know the building a little bit. Here is Rudy Goar top of the heat. Go trying to get the ball to Deven Shenzo. And now he does. Dven Shenzo dribbles live. Three-pointer by Dante. Good again. And they have got to start defending the three-pointer. Michael, they’re four of five from three to start the game. And they have a six-point lead. Minnesota 16, Lakers 10. Here’s Austin Reeves dribbling. Reeves wants the refs to call a foul. They don’t. He pulls up. Got it to Larabia. Lorabia loses it. Four turnovers for the Lakers. Here’s Minnesota with a two-on-one. Randall to McDaniel. Lay it up and in. And the Lakers need a timeout. And they will be. JJ will call it after the free throw. You those screens and they’re sending a double team at him. They don’t want to let him get going. So, they’re trying to force the ball out of his hands. The Lakers are craving closer connection to the team. If you are, get exclusive behind thescenes articles. Get to know about fan events with Laker email. Sign up at lakers.com/events. Here’s Jaden McDaniels at the free throw line. It’s good. And Minnesota has a 9point lead. Basically, Michael, because they’re making all their threes. Here is Austin Reeves coming back the other way. Reeves gets bumped by Randall. No whistle. Shoots a three over Julius and he missed it. Rebound grabbed by Devincenzo. Here come the Wolves with a chance to take a double-digit lead. McDaniel driving. Blocked from behind by eight. Ball goes out of bounds. It’ll be Wolves ball with 17 on the shot clock. Mike Connley’s going to inbound it underneath the Minnesota basket. Connley brings it in to Rudy Goar now top of the key. Jaden McDaniels left side. Devenenzo. Devenenzo dribbles inside to the to the rim and Goar grabbed the rebound, but then the Lakers took it away. Here’s Austin Reeves into the front court. Lakers trail by nine. Here is Sachamora. Give it to Labraia. Right corner. Lorabia into Randle or I’m sorry into spins on Goar. Now he just drove right around Gobear and they’re going to call a foul on Rudy. He was falling down so he grabbed around the waist on the floor before he could get a shot up. So that’ll be side out of bounds to the Lakers. But it’d be good to get Goar in foul trouble, wouldn’t it? You’re I don’t know the green naws in the game and starts. Yeah, I don’t know if that’s better or worse. Sometimes he comes off the bench and knocks down eight threes. Don Connect has checked into the game for Jared Vanderbilt. Connect has the ball and he’s dribbling toward the basket. Left hand layup. No good. Rebound eight and tipped it in. And they wave it off. They say he went over the back of Goar. Foul on DeAndre Aton. It’ll be Minnesota ball coming the other way. And timeout on the floor. 701 remaining in the first quarter. Wolves 19, Lakers 10 on the ESPNLA Lakers radio network. I think the foul’s going to be on DeAndre Aton. If it is, it’ll be his second personal foul. That was a bailout. DeAndre should have just stayed vertical because the Wolves are having a hard time not getting their offense on track against the Laker defense. Laker basketball brought to you by Moranga Casino Resort and Spa. Good times. The Lakers are playing with more confidence right now than the Wolves are. Here, here’s Julius Randle at the line. McDaniels back to Connley. Connley behind the three-point line. Left side goes top of the key to Randall. Randall dribbles left. Left-handed player. Now he works right. right side, got back to his left, lays it up, no good. Here comes Nick Smith for the Lakers. Smith into the front court. Smith still dribbling alioop to Eightton. No good. Rebound loose. They’re going to give it to the Wolves. Arabia got hit in the face, but he wants to stay out there. So, Wolves will have it with 14 on the shot. Here is Connley. Inbounds it to Gobear. Top of the key. Shannon right side. Connley. Connley hesitation dribble. throws it backwards to Shannon now left side McDaniels and he stepped out of bounds. That’s a Minnesota turnover, their sixth. And again, Michael, the Lakers have a chance to take the lead. Yeah, Chris Finch of the Minnesota cannot be happy with this team’s performance in this first half. Here’s Austin Reeves dribbling right. Goar picks him up on a switch. Reeves top of the key connect. Throw that up Dalton. He does. Five-footer good and the Lakers are back in front. 5351. Dalton Connect has 11 first half points. Here is Mike Connley. Give the ball to Julius Randall on the right wing. Randle with Hachamura on him. Powers up. Good. And a foul. And Ruie doesn’t think he fouled him. But is that three on Hachamura? It’s three on him. So, time out on the floor, but I think they’re going to have to take Ruie out when we come back. Lakers 53, Wolves 53. Free throw for Julius Randall when we return on the ESPNLA Lakers Radio Network. We’re in Minneapolis and the Lakers putting up a pretty good fight without LeBron and without Luca. The game is tied at 53. But Julius Randle’s going to the free throw line to try and put the Wolves back in front. Randle’s been the best player in this game, Michael. If he makes this, he’ll have 18 first half points. And we were worried that would be the case with no Anthony Edwards playing for Minnesota. We knew they were going to run everything through work. Yeah, but else is really doing anything for Minnesota. So, the doing a good job holding on the rest of the guys. All right, let’s see if Randall can cash in on this free throw. He’s four for four on free throw so far. Complimentary enough, Michael, that I put the giant jinx on him. He’s the best player out there. He’s four for four from the free throw line and he can do no wrong. Oh, he’s definitely going to miss one of these. Well, he only gets one and one. He’ll definitely miss this cuz Minnesota’s tight. They’re playing tight right now. the Lakers putting pressure on him and they look up if this team is so under man yet the Wolves can’t put it away you a little little tight a little tense well he did make the 453 Minnesota one two one Daniel throws the ball right side to back dribble right still dribbling right about a switch by Randle. Austin with seven to shoot. Goes right at Randall. Leans, kicks it to connect. Got to do something. One second to shoot it and they seal it. Mike Connley took it away. Another turnover. Randall to the rim. Lay it up and in. 11 first half turnovers for the Lakers and they trail by three. 20 points for Randall. WS have scored 15 points off those turnovers. Here’s Aton to the rim and missed it. tipped it in on a second effort. Aiden with 10 points, six rebounds in this game. 5655. [Music] Randle on the right elbow. Randle one-on-one against DeAndre Aton. Randle sizes up, turns, spins, follow a 10-footer. How good is he? Pretty smooth. Look at Kevin Durant that’s stepped at fullback. Maybe a little bit of Dirk Levitzki. 5855 Minnesota. 22 first half points for Julius Randle. Here’s Reeves with it. Three-pointer by Austin. No good. Rebound. And we got a loose ball foul on Minnesota pushing around Larabia. That’s the fourth team foul in the Wolves. So they had one to giveers will shoot free throws. 5855 Wolves ball inbounded to Ree. Here he is dribbling left. Austin backwards to Larabia. Right. Right back to Reeds. One-on-one against it into Spotty L. Kicks it to a wide open connect for three. No good this time, but Lakers get the rebound. DeAndre Eaton with it. Give it to Lorravia. Lorravia moving right. Loravia to DeAndre backwards to Ree. Fakes a three. Drives inside. Foul kind of. If it goes, it goes and very quietly. Austin has 15 first half points. We were talking about how he was struggling especially in the first quarter. But if he makes this at 16 first half points for Reeves done a decent job in it, but also always finds a way to score. Gets himself to the line for his seventh free throw tonight. That’s what Kobe used to do. You’d think Kobe was having a bad game and you’d look up and you have 20 points. That’s how you make up for all shooting night if your shots not going early. Gets to the line. And if Reeves makes this, it’ll be a tie game at 58 with 46 seconds to go. And he does. 16 in the game for Austin. Here come the Wolves into the front court. Mike Connley’s got it. Connley moves left, gives the ball top of the G. Nas Reed. Reed driving. Reed one-on-one against Connect. Now he’s double team. They got two guys on him. And Austin stole it. Reeves took it away. Here come the Lakers five on four. Reed is behind the play. Throws it down low to Eightton. Jump hook in the lane. Good. 12 in the game for Aton. And the Lakers lead 60- 58 with 25 seconds remaining. Shot clock and the game clock are 5 seconds apart. So, if the Lakers can come up with a stop here, they would have enough time to take it the other way. Let’s see if they can do it. Mike Connley dribbling out near half court. Connley moving right. Connley still dribbling right. Three-pointer by Mike. No good. Rebound Labraia. They got seven seconds. He’s got it away. Reeves got hung in the air and scores to the court shot up. is no good. And how about that? The Lakers without Luca, without LeBron lead by four at the half, 6258. Yeah, they’re not letting anybody else beat him from Minnesota. Only Julius Randle’s having a good first half. Shut everybody else down. Durant coming at you next on the ESPN Lakers radio network. You can’t contain Sedano and Cap’s passion for sports, not even at 30,000 ft. And Lincoln Riley, his credit, he owns up to it. He called the stupid call. But what were you thinking with that double pass situation on the short side of the field? Oh my god. I mean, there’s so much congestion there. And I’m just like, what are you doing? Sedano and Cap. Loud, proud, and always on. I literally on this flight from Boston, I I honestly I thank God like everybody else had their headphones on cuz I said it like that. It’s a full vibe inside the ESPN LA studios when Demarco and Travis are on. I’m so excited. What? They’re bobbing our head. Okay, because DeAndre said something and he said only Trial will be bobbing his head. I was like, absolutely not. What? Oh, no way. Who said that? You said DeAndre, come on now. The only person in this room that will not be bobbing their head is that man right over there. You would have said that. I feel like I’m being profiled. This is offensive. No, he’s right. The man who says I hate music. I’ve said music is none of my business. I don’t hate it. You think we don’t know who Biggie is? I didn’t say that. I didn’t say all that. I just want to bomb his head. Did he b his head? I said he did. You have no choice. Afternoons with Demarco and Travis. Head. Just waiting for you guys to finish up on back in. Driven by your Southern California Hyundai dealers. There’s never been a better time to test drive that Hyundai you’ve always wanted. Visit your SoCal Hyundai dealers today. Hi, this is Luca Dontich of your Los Angeles Lakers. It’s halftime of Lakers basketball. Now, now here’s Bento Durant. When you’re missing players that are stars like generational talents, when you have important important role players that are looking around, you’re like, “Okay, that’s two-way player. That’s a two-way player. That’s a two-way. That’s who we’re suiting up tonight.” You’re just hoping that you can compete compete and come out and play hard. You know what? Lakers, shut me up. You’re winning right now. At the break, the Lakers are up 62 to 58 in Minnesota. Austin Reeves 18-9. DeAndre A. I’ve been critical of DeAndre. I’ve been saying, “Hey, you have to be consistent. You have to put up the numbers. You have to be a dog and go get it.” 10 and seven. Roy Hachimura 9 and seven. And Jake Laravia, who has been getting roasted by Laker fans of why did they sign him? Why? What are you? Jake Lavia said, “Look, let me feel you out. Let me show up and oh, and I’m also going to get you seven points with three rebounds, an assist in 60 minutes of action.” And that’s what Jake Raven is going to offer for you. And the Lakers in Minnesota, mind you, Minnesota does not have Anthony Edwards. Okay, but they’re winning quarter 30 to 24 and they’re up 62 to 58. Look at the numbers. Blue, we have the nine. Jared Vanderbilt. Jared Vanderbilt, I’m okay if you don’t shoot anymore. I’m okay if you don’t do any of that. And I love how you go and get the boards. Aggressive on the offensive boards. He has four of them. And on the offensive side, he has nine rebounds total. Hey, and not in and a couple fouls. Fred, why not remind people that you’re there? And off the bench, Dalton Connect. Look, Dalton Connect hit a rookie wall last season. to do. They blitz Austin Reeves. Jada still doing it. So he has 12. The only two Wolves in double figures. Lakers turning the ball over. They have 10 turnovers. They have to take care of that. Look, even Jackson Hayes, look, you’re 7 foot. Grab a dunk. Reeves driving down the middle. Bounce pass. Vano put it up. Blocked. Got it. got it back and now he’s attacking again. Jackson Hayes to the rim, slam dunk. So they went right at Cobar twice and the second time it worked. One-point Minnesota lead. All right, Jackson, you’re going to get limited minutes, right? You’re the backup for DeAndre. Take advantage. Get that dunk. And we mentioned the take advantage. Dalton connect gave the Lakers a lead in the second quarter. Trees top of the key. Connect. Throw that up. Dalton. He does. Five-footer good and the Lakers are back in front. 5351. Dalton Connect has 11 first half points. All right, so Minnesota battle back. Julius Randle hit a couple buckets. They were up 5855. And one thing that I like about Austin Reeves is the way that he gets into the paint. Larvia moving right. Loravia to DeAndre backwards to Reeves. Fakes a three. Drives inside. Foul kind of it goes. It goes. And Michael very quietly. Austin has 15 first half points. We were talking about how he was struggling especially in the first quarter, but if he makes this at 16 first half points for Reeves. You might tire from carrying the team the last couple of games. He might have been struggling in the first quarter. Second quarter he turned it on. Ended up with 18 out at the break. Oh, and you know it’s always good when you have a buzzer beater. No good. Rebound Larabia. They got 7 seconds. He’s got it to connect now to Reeves down the middle all the way. Reeves got there. Hung in the air and scores. 18 first half points for Austin Reeves and the Lakers have the lead 62 to 58. So twoame road trip tonight they’re in Minnesota and tomorrow they head to Memphis where they’ll take on the Grizzlies on Friday night. Then he’ll be back here Sunday to take on Miami. And if you can go and get these victories without Luca who has a sprained finger that swelling has gone down. He’ll be reevalued in a couple days a loss with that lower leg contusion. LeBron, we were told today, is going to be get checked out in three uh couple weeks, two to three weeks because that was a schedule that you expected. Um, you know, Gabe Vincent sprained ankle. Marcus Smart will be re-evaluated this week. Compete, play hard. Lakers are doing that. You’re short-handed and they’re not making any kind of excuses as they shoot 59% from the field. I do want to see the three-pointers go up. Only knocking down four of them. Four for 13. Take care of the ball. knock down some three-pointers and have guys attacking. At the break, Lakers on top of Minnesota 62 to 58. Coming back, we’ll give you Michael Thompson’s keys to the game on the ESPN Lakers Radio Network. History lives in the Lakers. Kobe, Magic, Kareem, all the greats. And with LeBron James and Luca Donic, we are witnessing history being made right now. The excitement never ends. Three-pointer by Ree. It’s good. Austin Reeves with a dagger. You know, we added some pieces that we really needed and we have really high hopes on the ESPN LA Lakers radio network. It’s halftime of Lakers basketball. This is Hyundai at the Half. Lakers on top in Minnesota. They have a four-point lead, 62- 48. Right now it’s time for Michael Thompson’s keys to the game. Real simple. Watch the turnovers. They had 25 against Portland last Monday. Need to cut that in half. Empty. They’re around there. They got 10 of them. Uh, you know, Jerry Vanderbilt has three of those and DeAndre Aen has two. So, the big guys need to hold on to the ball. And then another one. All hands on deck. He had two exclamation marks for me. Everyone that’s playing needs to chip in. All right. All right. Well, Nick Smith and Bronny James zero points as Bonnie did not even take a shot. Dalton Connect has the 11 off the bench. Jackson Hayes has the two. You’re right, Michael. Everybody needs to check in on this one. What I like from Minnesota is the way that they’re attacking on the defensive side. You have Rudy Goar, right, who is all defense. That what’s he he’s there for. Jada McDaniels, what does he do? gets in your face and wants to agitate you and he plays suffocating defense and they’ve been going at Austin Ree whenever he has the ball in the point of attack and he’s still finding a way to get nine assist. One thing I like about that though is only one turnover for Austin Ree. So he started slow. Well, he’s going to start slow when they’re attacking him like that. Lakers made the adjustments and they’re up at the break. All right, let’s head back to Minnesota. See if the Lakers can hold on. First of a twoame road trip. They’re playing the Timberwolves 62 to 58 at the break. Coming up, MT in Ireland from Minnesota on the ESPN Lakers Radio Network. It doesn’t matter if you’re running drills at the park, playing pickup on a Saturday, or sinking to the final putt. He’s coming from this planet, you know. Yeah. Yeah. He’s so amazing. Everybody can hit a two, three home run, bro. Pitching and later go there and and hitting home runs and running and stealing base 50/50 and striking out like 100 200 people. That’s amazing. Is it the whole thing or like if he just if you took him as a hitter that would impress you or if you just took him as a pitcher that would impress you or is it just the whole thing? all his self only you look at him and he’s just impressing you. He seeks something so cute, so beautiful. I’m with you. Right. Yes. He’s so perfect. Afternoons with DeMarco and Travis weekdays at 3 on 710 ESPN, the ESPN LA app, and streaming live on YouTube. [Music] John with you in Minnesota. Lakers 62, Wolves 58. It’s the start of the third quarter and it’s powered by Zip Recruiter. The smartest way to hire. Try Zip Recruiter for free at ziprecruiter.com/la. and Michael really impressed with how the Lakers who made 10 first half turnovers sees the lead with a 70 run at the end of the game at the end of the half rather Austin Reed more impressively he’s got nine assists so he’s not forcing anything and the Lakers defense has really picked up and they’ve eliminated Minnesota a bigger team to only four second chance points Lakers have 11 of those themselves so the Lakers is just out working and out uh be and beating enough bullying Minnesota tonight so far. So, uh, we still have a whole half to go, but so far so good for the Lakers, who, if you are just joining us, are playing without LeBron James, Luca Donsic, and Marcus Smart, and Gabe Vincent. Michael the Wolves, to be fair, are playing without Anthony Edwards, but so far so good for the Lakers. [Music] Let’s go Bulls. Here comes Mike Connley. Gets the ball to Dante Devincenzo. Top of the key back to Connley. Connley moving right. Connley dribbling. Pulls up. Whips the ball to Randall. Three-pointer by Julius. Good again. I don’t know why they’re giving him that shot, but they are. He’s the only player really hurting the Lakers. So, if they could guard him a little closer with Ruie, they could really stretch a lead here against the Wolves in this third quarter. All right, they get the ball into DeAndre Aton, but he’s farther away from the basket than he likes. He hands it off to Reeves. Top of the key, Larabia. Three-pointer by Jake. No good. Rebound grabbed by Minnesota. Here’s Randall into the front court. Lorravia on him. Randall driving. Goes right at the Andre Eaton. Puts it up. Did he shoot an air ball? He sure did. From like one foot. Here’s Lavia coming the other way. Got the ball to Vando and they foul him. I don’t know if they’ll give him free throws here or not. Let’s see. Nope. You’re going to say side out of bounds. I didn’t think he had gone into a shooting motion. Here is Austin dribbling. Give it to DeAndre Aton. Goes right at Goar. Back to Reeves driving. Reeves kicks it to Larabia. Four to shoot. Austin’s got it. puts up a three-pointer. No good. Rebound. Laravia got it to Reeves. Kicks it to Hachamura. Hachimura driving. Two-point follow. No good. Rebound. Vanderbilt up over everybody. Loravia for three. Good. Well, Michael, that’s your old theory. Give any team three shots at it and they’ll cash it in. And the Lakers lead by four. 6561. Lakers out rebounding Minnesota 26 to 17. Here is Rudy Goar hands the ball to Connley. right-hand runner. Good. He’s ambidextrous. He can shoot with either hand, and that time he proved it. He’s a left-handed player, but made that shot running to his right with his right hand. Here’s Austin Reeves into the front court. Reeves dribbling. Reeves still dribbling. Nobody cut him off, so he whips it to Ruie. Now back to Austin. Three-pointer top of the key. No good. Rebound grabbed by Minnesota. Jaden McDaniels has got it. He brings it up the right side. Laker lead is two. There’s Julius Randall who’s been fantastic on the baseline. They knock it away from him. Austin Reeves took it away. Here come the Lakers. Reeves down low to Ruy. Great pass and Ruie lays it up and in. Perfect pass by Austin. His 10th assist of the game. He’s got a double double. 18 points, 10 rebound or 10 assists. Here comes Dante Ganchenzo. Lakers lead by four and a turnover by Minnesota. Jake Lorabia knocked it away. Back come the Lakers. Austin Reeves length of the court pass to Eightton. Eightton one-on-one against Rudy Goar right at the basket. Puts up over Goar and in. Boy, you’re right, Michael. If he gets that ball in the paint, even if he’s well defended, he normally scores. He’s very skilled in the paint. Good soft touch. 6963. Here’s Mike Connley. Cut off at the rim and now he throws it away. Another turnover. Lakers forcing 10 Minnesota turnovers. They Lakers also have 10, but man are they playing well so far. 9 minutes to go. Third quarter. 6963 Lakers. Give it a Reeves driving toward the basket. Fall away. 10-footer is short. Rebound grabbed by Goar. Gives it to Dante Devenenzo up the right side. Jaden McDaniels. McDaniels dribbling toward the basket. Got there. Fouled by Jake Loravia. And Jaden McDaniels is going to shoot two. Laker fans, nothing beats seeing a team. Get your tickets now. Even if it’s last minute, a ticket master, the official ticket marketplace of the Lakers and the NBA. Jaden McDaniels going to the free throw line. The Lakers actually drafted this guy, Michael, but traded him before he ever played for LA. Why? He’s a good player. Why would they trade him? They traded him for Dennis Shruder. Remember when Shruder was playing for Oklahoma City and we needed a point guard? Yeah. So that’s when they uh traded him and after he he was traded to OKC, they traded him to Minnesota. You know who his cousin is? Do you know this about McDaniels? No. Who? Joan Howard. Oh, who of course was the coach at Michigan? Not anymore. Good friends with Rob Pelinka, college teammates with Rob. Here is Jared Vanderbilt. Top of the key. Ruy Hatchima fakes a three, drives inside. And now he takes a two-point and hit it. Nice shot by Hatramora and the Lakers lead by six. That’s their largest lead of the game. 7165. 820 to go. Third quarter. Oh no. Randall wide open for three but he missed it. Back come the Lakers. Austin Reeves has it. Reeves length of the court pass to Laabia. He caught it. Put it in and a foul falling down backwards. How picking on Mike Connley down there just running underneath their basket and just throwing a lob over Conniey’s hair. Boy, what a pass by Reeves. That’s his 11th assist of the game in Minnesota calls timeout. 7365 Lakers. And Jake Laravia with a free throw to try and put him up by nine when we come back. 812 remaining in the third quarter on the ESPNLA Lakers Radio Network. Jake Larabia with one free throw after that circus layup he just made and he hits the free throw and it’s 7465 Lakers by 810 to go in the third quarter. Here’s Mike Connley with it. Give it to Rudy Goar at the top of the key. Goar hands to Jaden McDaniels and he’s pushed by Vando and Vando is saying that he fell down. So he tripped over his own feet. That’s three on Jared Vanderbilt. JJ Reic is looking at his coaches saying, “Should I challenge this and they say no?” So Minnesota will inbound it to Mike Connley and he gets a pick from Rudy Gobear. Connley top of the key to Denzo and they almost threw it away again, Michael, but Randall picked it up. Randall driving, cut off beautifully by Aton who grabs the rebound and tips it to Austin Reeves. Here come the Lakers into the front court. Reeves to Lorravia. Loravia attacks, gets into the paint, follow a 10-footer. Good. And the Lakers lead by double digits. 7665. 11point Los Angeles lead. There’s Steven Shinszo for three. No good. Rebound. Ruy. Got it to Reeves. Reeves is orchestrating beautifully as the point guard in this game. He’s got 12 assists to go along with 18 points. He gets it to Ruie out to Larabia. Three-pointer by Jake. Good. Loravia is hot tonight. He’s up to 18 points. Three of four from three. 14point Laker lead. 710 to go. Third quarter. Here’s McDaniels for three. No good. Rebound DeAndre Aton. I think the Lakers score here, Michael. And Chris Finch is going to have to call another timeout. Yes, he will. Minnesota’s desperate now. Playing desperate. You can see it in their body language. Here is Austin Reeves with Randall on him. Goes right by him. Pulls up. 15-footer. No good. Rebound. Go Bear. Outlet to Devincenzo. Dvenenzo into the front court. Left side. Julius Randall driving. Cut off by Eaton, but he put it in anyway. No, they wave it off. Offensive foul on Randall. And everything is going right for the Lakers. They got a 14point lead and they’re going to Minnesota is going to challenge this Lorravia got hit in the eye and I think that’s why they called the foul, but I’m not sure Randall Michael is the one that hit him. We’ll find out when we come back. All right, timeout on the floor. Lakers 79, Wolves 65. 640 to go. Third quarter on the ESPNLA Lakers Radio Network. You know, we added some pieces that we really needed and we have really high hopes on 710 ESPN and the ESPN LA approach [Music] window. All right, so uh something finally went Minnesota’s way, Michael. They call this a defensive foul. Yeah. So, basically, Larabia flopped, tried to con the ref into calling the offensive foul. Loravia’s face ran right into Randall’s shoulder and so they called the He definitely got hit, Michael, but they say Julius didn’t cause it. I don’t think he did. I think he I saw that wasn’t He didn’t get hit. This guy’s got to stop faking. Oh, I think he got hit. We’ll ask him after the game, but I think he got hit. And uh that’s why Julius told him to to review it. Threw his head back in pretending he got hit in the head. All right. So if Randle makes this free throw, it’ll be an 11-point Laker league, but he missed it. And the rebound is battled for and controlled by Aton. Aton has done great inside against Goar for the second game in a row. Here is Austin Reeves dribbling. Gets the ball top of the key. Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt. Give it a laria. Shoot that Jake. He drives down the middle. He did shoot it, but he and he draws a foul, so he’ll go to the line to shoot two. Lor, this is Loravia’s best game as a Laker, wouldn’t you say? Had a chance to get the 20 points there. Only eight shots. Loravia’s first year with the Lakers. He was born in Pasadena, moved to Indiana when he was five. He’s the leading scoreer for the Lakers with 19. He started his career with Memphis. We’re going to be there on Friday. Then he went to Sacramento. Then he came to the Lakers. But he misses the free throws and it’s 80-67 by 13. 610 to go. Third quarter. Randle’s got it. Give it to Danchenzo. Now to Randall now. Nas Reed. Reed driving. Reeves driving. Reeves cuts him off, but Dillingham lays it up and in. Reeves thought he drew a charge, but the refs didn’t go for it. And it’s 80 to 69. Lakers by 11. Here’s Reeves into the front court. A foul. So the Dodgers got to go to Toronto to win two, huh? Yep. We want to welcome those of you who have been watching or go down six to one to the Toronto Blue Jays. And the Dodgers are one game away from elimination. Their next game’s Friday at 5:00. They lose that game, they lose the World Series. But Michael as DeAndre Aton shoots and misses the first free throw. Uh Yoshi Yamamoto is pitching for the Dodgers on Friday. So they have a good chance to win and it may all come down to Saturday night. So game six will be Friday. Yep. Both of them at 5:00. Second free throw by Eightton. That one is good. DeAndre Eaton has 15 points and nine rebounds. Every Laker on the floor has scored in double figures and LA leads 81 to 69. Here is Julius Randall with it. Throws ball down low. Larabia steals it. Pokes it ahead to Austin Reeves. Reeves driving aloop to connect. Slam dunk. Perfect pass by Austin. his 14th assist of the game along with 18 points. Yeah, Dton Connect really stepped up tonight. Jake Larravia, those two guys especially because we know what other guys can do, but those other guys, those two guys have really stepped up big. One thing I would love is if they would stop missing free throws. Nick Smith just missed another one and they’re now 14 of 21, just 67%. Minnesota shot Minnesota’s shot 11 free shots. Well, if you’re going to have a run, not a bad time to do it right at the end. Save your best for last. Now we’ve got something. A two-possession game. I’m just going to shove you in the back for the way you’ve played tonight. Randall spins inside, goes up, and draws the foul. That’s the first personal in Austin Reeves tonight. That seems highly unlikely. Dante with what seemingly is a needless offensive foul. And then you give up two points at the other end. Now you’re down eight. [Applause] Still 208 left to play. Free throw is good. [Applause] [Applause] Two free throws good for Julius Randle. He’s up to 31 points. [Applause] Julius has gone for 30 or more in two of his last three games. Need a stop. Six dime for Mike Connley. 30 points for Jaden McDaniels. Tying his careerh high. 114 113. Lakers still up by one with 40 seconds left. Shot clock is down to 10. Reeves with it with McDaniels on him. Eighton the high screen. Eightton to the left side. He’ll drive with a left hand. Double clutch is dropped to back for eight. It’s loose on the floor. Eightton’s got it out to Hatchima. [Applause] What a move by Julius Randall. He tried to initially penetrate, got cut off, so he backed it out, got in rhythm, and attacked with the right-handed dribble. Then he switched to the left hand to score it. Tremendous 33 points for Julius Randall. He’s well shy of his careerhigh tonight, which came against Minnesota when he was with the Knicks two years ago. 57 points. Bulls were down 16 in this fourth quarter with 621 left. 24-7 run, 9 of late, nine straight points. The clock has not been moving fast enough for the Lakers. They’ve been trying to milk that clock. They’ve been trying to JJ Reick’s been just playing this one close to the vest, trying to milk it all the way. But now the Lakers need points. They line up with four players behind the ball. So Labraia will trigger in the front court. Inbound comes to Austin Reeves. He’s got it up top with the Lakers down by one and the Wolves commit a foul. They had one to give. Rudy commits it with 6.6 seconds left to play. Each team with a timeout left and JJ Reic will use one here. 6.6 seconds left to play. Timberwolves 115, Lakers 114. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] I mean, the fans that have been here all night long have been waiting this for this kind of run for almost 2 hours. [Applause] [Music] Wolves are 6.6 seconds away from picking up a monster come from behind win. Yes, against a short-handed Laker team, but a team that has outplayed them here tonight. [Music] [Applause] Fourth quarter comebacks, nothing new for the Timberwolves. [Applause] They had a the most fourth quarter comebacks in the NBA last season. [Applause] They had six wins last year by one trailing by 10 or more in the fourth quarter. All right, same setup. The Lakers will have it far side. Larabia triggers in. Lakers down by one. Inbound comes to Austin Reeves against James McDaniels. 5 seconds left. Aton sets the high screen with three. Now with two. Reeves on a drive gets in the paint, floats up the shot and hits it at the buzzer. Austin Reeves has won the game for the LA Lakers. He beats the buzzer on a floater from just inside the free throw line. We’re on the court. It’s a successful two-point field goal. His remarkable run over these last three games for LA continues. So sounded spectacular finish by Austin Reeves. the exact play you said they should run. But they send a double team at him then he but he split the double team and got through. Oh, what a shot by Austin Reeves and the Lakers win it 116 1115 and Anthony Edwards Austin’s teammate in the World Cup two years ago comes out and pays his respects says that was unbelievable. And joining us from courtside will be Alton Connect on what turns out to be a big time player and he makes big time plays. You guys did a good job defending Minnesota in that fourth quarter. Gave up a couple of threes, but you guys seem to be the aggressor defensively. What did you guys do such a good job to get them out of their rhythm? Uh just like you said, uh just disrupt the uh their uh ball screens and uh DHO’s and you know, we still got some more to improve, but we took the dub, so that’s all that matters. Uh Dalton, you had your best game of the season. Jake Larabia had his best game of the season. Austin ties his careerhigh in assist. No Luca, no LeBron, no Gabe Vincent, no Marcus Smart. How did you guys win this game? Um just uh staying connected, you Uh those guys are down. That’s the next guy up and you know uh we all delivered. Uh we all played our role and you know we came out with a W. You were struggling there for a while but it looks like you got your shot back. How are you feeling out there? Uh feel great. I feel uh I never struggled but you know the shots weren’t going to fall in. But it’s all good. I’m a confident shooter. I’m always going to let it fly. Shooters shoot right Dton? For sure. Shooter shoot. Next one’s always going in. How do you feel about Memphis on Friday? Again you’re going to be short-handed but if you could do it here if you could do it in Sacramento maybe you can do it there. Huh? Yeah. Uh like you said, we’re going to be ready to play uh Memphis soon. So, you know, we’re on to the next one and we’re going to get ready for them. All right. Go enjoy it, Dalton. Congratulations. Yes, sir. I appreciate you. Michael, what did we just see? We see a team that’s playing with a lot of guts. You know, like I say, they they’re under under man and they figure, hey, we got nothing to lose. Let’s just go out there and play hard and see what happens. And, you know, they committed too many turnovers again, but their defensive effort was really sharp tonight. Yeah, on the three-points they were a little bit lapsed, but uh they were digging in and keeping and having Minnesota have a tough time below the three-point line to score. Betto Durant joins us. He’ll host the postgame show. And Betto, I mentioned it before he hit the shot. Austin Reeves has a flare for this kind of thing. He won a game in Dallas when he was a rookie. He won the game on Christmas Day last year against the Warriors. We thought he did it in Chicago and he does it again. This time in Minnesota at the buzzer. What a game. And especially after they they did blow that 20point lead and the Minnesota bought back. And Michael, you said it right after Randle hit that shot. There’s plenty of time inside the studio. I’m thinking, Michael, there isn’t enough time. But I was proved wrong. And yeah, 10 seconds. You got a I mean, they fouled, of course, and put it down to six and a 6.6, six, but that’s still that’s a couple of moves and a shot right in rhythm and that’s what Austin did. And cuz and they should have they shouldn’t have let him get the ball. They should have made somebody else catch the ball on the inbounds. Yeah, you got that. We got to start talking about how good Austin Reeves is. Oh, yeah. 28 points, but more importantly, Michael, 16 assists, which means when he didn’t have a shot, he got it to an open teammate. I like this game as much as I like the 51point game because of who they were missing and and the way he came through. Yeah, they beat a team Minnesota wasn’t at full strength. They only missing one guy. Pretty important guy, Anthony Edwards. But still, Minnesota thought that they had this game in the back because of the Lakers are missing so many players. On a night where the Dodgers come up short and the city is in a little bit of a depression, Austin Reeves gives us a moment to remember. A buzzerbeating runner in the paint and the Lakers win 116 115. Betto, I wish I could host the postgame show tonight. I bet you’re going to have a really good time. Take it away. It’s all yours. And we are here for you Dodger fans cuz it’s uh basketball season now. And Austin Reeves gets the game winner 116 115. He scores 28 with 16 dimes. We’ll break it down on the ESPN Lakers radio network. Lakers basketball is a final.
