[Phly Sports] Quotes from Maxey, VJ, Embiid, And Nurse Post Game

I didn’t copy anything Maxey said, but he gave good detail about their play actions. Highly recommend the first 6 minutes of the video where Maxey talks.
When asked about **VJ** playing his first back to back:
>Back to back, obviously a different routine in that second game. It was tough for me, personally. First back to back, 40 minutes back to back. I don’t know if I can prepare myself for that. I’m glad I had to go through it. Now I know how to approach the second game of back to back.
When asked who taught VJ how to watch film:
>I learn from different people, different people watch film differently. I take aspects of it. I’ve being around the national team, highschool coaches, college coaches. Everyone watches film differently, and that’s where I get it from.
When asked how he can eliminate the clutter when watching film:
>I feel like you’re just watching basketball. When you’re watching a certain team. Pickup on their tendencies, different players where they like to shoot the ball, left and pass, shoot off the left. Analytics are big now, and you can tell. He can’t shoot going right.
**Embiid**
When Embiid was asked about first time playing down the stretch:
>I was tired. That’s why they should let me play more minutes. You get use to it, find your rhythm. I was a little tired, nothing like playing basketball. That’s how you get into better shape.
When asked about the slow start:
>I think defense, we did a much better job at the half and second half, but that’s where it starts. Got to get stops, got to be aggressive. As much as everyone has being excited about the good start. My mentality is how we can get better, how are we going to compete against the best teams in the nba. I feel like in the first couple games, our defense just hasn’t being there. Offensively we’ve being good, but defensively we just haven’t been there. I like the effort we had. And we weren’t going to go 82-0. I’m actually happy, excited about this loss. I think we learned a lot.
When asked about the defense:
Obviously, we’re missing some guys that could help. As I’m trying, as I’m getting back to myself, and tonight I felt like I was also a step towards getting there. I was much better defensively then first couple games. Presence I normally offer, hasn’t being there. But I’m getting there.
**Nick Nurse**
>Nick Nurse: When thing we couldn’t shake off tonight was the long rebounds. They(Celtics), kept chasing chasing the long rebounds. I would say the lack of pickup points defensively led to the slow start.
What was the design on the final play:
>It’s got a few things going on there, Joel going off a flair screen, Tyreese coming off of a pin down, VJ heading to basket. Tyreese and VJ got hung up a little bit. There was a couple guys opened. Didn’t handle it cleanly. It wasn’t great, when you don’t make those, you wish you did something different. We couldn’t quite shake them to get free.
When asked about trouble rebounding the ball:
>I want to look at it, but if I had to guess, I don’t think the size had that much to do with it. They’re playing small too. Maybe a little bigger around board. But I’ll bet when they’re taking these 3ds, we’re running to far into the paint. Instead of a wall around perimeter free throw area. I’m guessing our guys were in the paint. But it’ll show in the film.
When asked about VJ getting lost in offense:
>I think he wasn’t alone, in the lackluster energy at the start. That’s too me, something you go to learn. He’s coming in fast, and get yourself ready physically, mentally to go. He’s a young guy, he’s got to learn. If I had to guess without looking at film. We didn’t get enough into spread type offense, and get him enough charges. When he did score it was usually a little bit off a kick back and boom there he was downhill, and we didn’t do that enough.
When asked how he evaluate Tyreese playing
>I thought he was good, lots of minutes again, heavy load, not easy for him. Lots of physicality, lots of holding, I don’t think he was discouraged by it. I’m trying to find him some more stuff in transition before it gets to grindy for him. Just because, 48 minutes got to get old, or 43 minutes. Still a lot. Thought he made a lot of good reads late, picked up his defense.
I will be posting these on the PHLY Sports YouTube channel for every home game and practice, btw.
