According to MLB insiders I know, people in the know in other organizations, they feel the Cubs will be there among the top suitors (for Dylan Cease),” Levine said during an interview with 670 the Score. “I would say it’s highly likely – like for sure – that he’s going to be looked at by the Cubs and be continued to be pursued.”

  1. He makes a lot of sense, even with his warts. The top of the rotation is still Steele, Boyd, and Imanaga. Sticking another lefty like Suarez or Valdez would be a bit awkward, even if that’s more of a second-half problem. Cease would slot behind Boyd well and mean the pressure comes off Rea to be a workhorse and Horton to have solved all of his developmental goals immediately.

But, of course, it’ll be a question of how they supplement that. The bullpen has many guys headed to free agency (Keller, Thielbar, Pomeranz, Brasier, Civale) on top of the Kittredge option. Tucker’s status seems very murky, and the next-best hitter would come with fit issues (Suzuki has to go back into the field and Ballesteros loses anywhere to play if Schwarber joins).

I really hope we see a Hoerner extension this offseason though. He’s been great, there isn’t an in-house replacement to be excited about, and I think keeping him in FA would be a really tough task, barring a disastrous season for him.

  2. IMO if the Cubs want to continue to pretend they are not a major market team, then there are better ways to spend your resources.
