Johnson expresses caution about long term deals to pitchers.

  1. Everyone is complaining about this, but I just read it as they plan to spend carefully. That they are a bit cautious, as they just finished getting all their bad salaries off the books.

Nobody thought ownership would be ok taking on all of Devers contract after spending on Adames and Chapman. Nobody thought they would let Posey have complete autonomy when choosing a manager, and a wild card one at that.

Let’s all take a step back and wait until the offseason plays out. It might be a quiet one for the simple fact that free agency is quite weak this year. After the Dodgers buy Kyle Tucker for $500m, there may not be much action for a while.
If we come away with two solid starting pitchers, I’ll consider this offseason a success. People keep doubting Posey but I think we have something special going on with him.

    Patience everyone, patience

  2. 2026 Giants have at least $50M to spend, before they even whiff the luxury tax. Depending on what source you use to calculate payroll numbers, it might be as much as $65M. I’ll be disappointed if the Giants don’t spend heartily this off-season.

  3. So, in reality, he said… nothing. What is he supposed to say “hell yeah, we’re gonna go out and give out 200m contracts to a couple of 32 year olds!”

I think they should spend. I think all team owners should spend lots and lots of money because fuck it, you’re rich, spend the fucking money.

But also expecting the owner to just openly state ANYTHING about their spending is silly. It would handicap the GM when it comes to negotiations if they show their hand.

  4. I absolutely hate the “not my money” excuse people use. It’s a cop out and shows that they have no understanding of how things work.

Yes, it’s not your money, but doesn’t mean it’s infinite. Management knows the finite limits of it and you should want them to spend those funds to field the best team possible.

The argument kind of falls apart when you use that for the Barry Zito, Aaron Rowan or Evan Longoria anchors, especially when those same people complain about those deals later

  5. I totally agree (as did Farhan) that loading your roster with guys in their early 30’s on 7 year contracts is not a good long term move. It is one of the main reason we have sucked in the last ten years.
