ESPN’s Buster Olney: Yankees Need to Alter Roster Building Approach | The Rich Eisen Show

On behalf of all Yankee fans, Buster only, why do the Yankees keep running it back? Why Why do they keep saying, “Okay, we’re close. We just need to tinker here, tinker there,” rather than just getting a completely new way of looking at everything. Wh why why does that seem to be the modus appari of of House Stein Burner, best you can tell? So, the first time I met you, I remember at Legends Field, you were at a Yankees exhibition game, and I could pick up right away that you were a big Yankees fan. Correct. You grew up with the Steinbrunner doctrine which is if you uh don’t win the World Series and your season is a failure, right? That’s comes from George Steinbrunner. Well, the person who doesn’t believe in the George in the Steinbrunner doctrine is House Steinbrunner, the Sun. He doesn’t operate that way. He gives them credit for the fact that they’ve made the they’ve they haven’t had a losing season since 1992. He gives him credit for the fact that last year they played in the World Series. that this year they had the second best record in the American League in a way that Yankee fans don’t. Well, I mean, I I just to just to I guess broaden it this out a little bit, I don’t believe fully in the George M. Steinbreri doctrine because that on occasion was extremely unhealthy. Um, you know, it it put undue pressure on a lot of people. It made things ugly. It wasn’t the way I would run a franchise. But I’m just saying a a little bit of that is something that Hal could actually take here because at this point in time it looks like I I’m genuinely concerned that Aaron Judge’s talent is being ultimately wasted right now, right? Because he’s surrounded by a lineup that doesn’t get on base for him enough. It’s just all hit or miss. I thought what Buck Martinez said about the Yankees that Aaron Boon pushed back on that they if they don’t hit home runs, they don’t win. They strike out too much, they don’t put the ball in play, and they don’t defend very well. I thought that was 100% spoton. I also love Buck Martinez, one of my one of my old ESPN colleagues that I used to hang out with and and broadcast with. He was 100% spot on. And yet, they don’t they don’t change. They they just keep the roster pretty much formed the way they do. And I thought they did very well, you know, putting a roster together this year based on the circumstances, but I I I don’t I don’t understand why they’re just going to they’re just going to run it back again, right? They’re changing, but glacially. Okay. Okay. You remember the years 3 four years ago, they constantly had those right-handed hitting lineups that you’re like, that is not going to play in Yankee Stadium. Uh and that was an all or nothing lineup. They gradually by adding Jazz Chisum. Last year, they traded for Cody Bellinger. they have become a little bit more versatile, uh, a little bit more speed, but I think as they move forward, they’re going to take more examples from teams like the Blue Jays, like the Milwaukee Brewers, where they have add more players who are versatile, can play different positions, and let’s face it, they have to figure out shortstop. Anthony Vulpi, uh, you know, it’s three years now. They’ve been waiting and waiting and waiting. He seemed to be in absolute regression last season. I know he was injured. They need to get a a plan B in place. Well, isn’t Lombard coming up or he’s too young? He’s too young now, but he is considered to be a superstar prospect. He could be up at the end of next year, beginning of 2027. Um, but he’s not ready for the start of 2026. I do think that they will have some changes and man, they are loaded with pitching. Hey, you made it all the way to the end. Thanks for that. Check us out every single day streaming live on Disney Plus and the ESPN app 12 to 3 Eastern.

  1. Simple solution. Get a couple players with grit. Win first me second types. Go get Donovan from STL. for starters. Unload McMahon and bring in Bregman. From there concomitant the Pen. That’s a reasonable plan.

  2. Just my 2 cents but Watching the WS and seeing how these 2 teams play, my goodness, Yankees are not on that level. They got lucky getting into the WS last year because of the weak teams they played. They definitely need to change their approach in every sense and frankly with the current Yankees organization, I don’t see it happening.

  3. The problem is that they still have Cashman and Especially Boone. He is Not what The Yankees need. And one thing that keeps going over the head of Yankee fans and even the media is. The pitching has Not been Good. They are not loaded with pitchers. Their pitching is what lost them both games in toronto giving up 10 and 13 runs in both games in the post season is not a Title contending team. How can people just blame the hitting when it's been the pitching that has lost them many games. Especially their bullpen. Fried was terrible against Toronto and Warren is just not a starting pitcher. Weaver has not been himself. They don't have Good enough pitching! You can get more hitters, But if your pitching gives up more than 6 or 7 runs a game in a postseason…You're not winning period! And hal needs to sell the team if he's just gonna let boone and cash gives us nothing ever single year. Every team seems to celebrate in Yankee stadium now. Franchise has gotten pathetic.

  4. Lmao every Yankees minor leaguer is a “super star”…that’s neverrrr happened. Those guys get so over hyped. Lumbar can’t hit, he’s 2-3 years away from majors and definitely isn’t a super star

  5. To be fair, George Steinbrenner had that same mantra as his son in the late 80s early 90s. There is a vintage interview with George and Mike and the Mad Dog in 1990 and George was bragging to Mike and the Mad Dog that interview that the Yankees were the winningest team in the 80s even though they didn’t win a World Series that decade.

  6. If the only thing they do is do a better job at roster construction… it's gonna keep being Groundhog Day. There's way more wrong with this organization than that.

  7. This Yankees fan wants to share his two cents to everyone. You haters are so Hilarious. So let’s talk about other teams. Boston they never had a top rookie play any successful season since their rounds of minor league talents now. Past 3-4 years that’s has changed. Seattle still hasn’t even touch the WS let alone won one. They get too many top 15 picks almost every year in the draft. Don’t have a ring. Ken Griffey A Rod Gilbert Woe that’s just a few. Brewers been getting into the playoffs year in year out for what almost 10 years. Still haven’t won a World Series. Mets have no pitching. Interesting fun fact about this playoffs this year. Yankees in 4 games in the ALDS had 4 Quality starts. Got blowned away by absolutely no hitting and no pen. That’s why we lost. That’s still no excuse but facts are facts. Even Toronto have had their rookies struggles. Now one of you haters are going to tell me I’m wrong. Go headed. Also fun fact if we are talking about Cashman. The man has 4 rings as a Yankees GM. Yes maybe a new voice someone in the front office is needed. But you can’t hate his stats career wise.

  8. What a wonderful night!! BLOW JAYS lose world Series🎉😂 can't stand dodgers but I can't stand blow Jay's even more. It'll be another 32 years and you still won't have a WS win🤣😂
