Film Study: How Tyler Shough played for the New Orleans Saints Vs the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

All right, let’s talk about Tyler Shuck. We finally got to see him in some NFL action here after, you know, a lot was made of of, you know, drafting a 25year-old who’s now 26 in the first round. They spent a decent pick on him, you know, 40th overall selection. Um, and, you know, Spencer Rattler had played well enough to get the first uh start the starts for the first eight games. But here, midway through the eighth game, Shot comes in. Let’s talk about how he played. It didn’t start off great. I mean, this first play, it’s on the first possession. It’s not his first play, but it’s it’s on uh it’s the first play I’m showing you, and it’s on the first possession of the game for him. Um zone coverage concept, you have those two routes kind of kind of stretching out where those two Tampa Bay players will be covering. A third route will hopefully get into a gap in coverage for the Saints, and that’s kind of the way this play is designed to work. So, Shuck takes a snap. He looks in this direction, and it’s it’s open. I mean, this is definitely a play that can work. I think Chuck is getting the ball out of his hands, good timing and everything. This is just one of those like, you know, sometimes defender makes a play type plays where watch as Chuck gets it there, but watch Antoine Winfield just rip it out of the receivers’s hands. He ends up with uh what could have maybe been a touchdown, ultimately was ruled an interception, but uh he was ruled down by contact. So, again, for Shuck, what are you really supposed to do there? That’s a totally fine play, but ultimately it’s going to hurt the box score because of, you know, how it ended up. Now, I will say something like this maybe not ideal. Um, it’s a zone coverage concept here. So, you see the route on the screen just first and 10 trying to gain some yards right here. Shock is going to take some take the snap and in theory this should work, right? In theory, there is enough space here to hit your intended receiver on this play. It’s Devon who is running this route going up against Zion McCollum. But what the issue is just how do you actually make this work? Cuz if you try to lead him, well, there’s another Tampa Bay defender because it’s cover two zone. There’s just there’s not a lot of space trying to lead him more over the middle of the field. So instead, Chuck does not go that uh far forward. But because of that, it’s, you know, back enough that honestly that could have been intercepted. I think, you know, McCullum was just kind of desperately trying to get back into the play. Had he had a little bit more time, maybe he adjust and is able to get the pick there. So, you know, not great in that situation. That’s just one of those the number one thing young quarterbacks say when they, you know, biggest thing that surprises them when they enter the league is just how athletic the defensive backs are in the NFL. I mean, throws that work and call, which just don’t work at the NFL level. And and that’s an example of it. Heading over here. So, this is going to be a fourth down and two situation. It is uh man coverage across the board. So, okay, find a matchup that you like. Again, it’s a 17-point game. If you’re going to have any chance, like kind of got to convert here. So, Shuck is going to take the snap. And it’s Jawan Johnson who he’s looking towards again. I mean, it this is just kind of a thing. Let’s try to find a match up, try to see what works. Is Jawan Johnson exactly the guy you want to look towards? Well, again, big big body can, you know, running a route that can just try to gain a couple yards. Like, you get it. And this isn’t a bad throw. It’s just like there’s no way for that to be complete. Honestly, that’s exactly what you would want for Shuck from Chuck on that play. there just there wasn’t really a an avenue for that play to work. So, you know, again, some of this was just like what are you supposed to do in this situation if you’re Tyler Shock? Now, it was not all that way. In fact, I thought there was some good stuff from Shock. So, like this play for example, it’s going to once again be a man coverage play. This time it’s third down and three. I guess technically 8 and 1/2 minutes left. Can you score three touchdowns here? It’s going to be tough, but you play it out, right? Uh so again, Shuck is going to look for, you know, uh a route that can work. This is definitely a route that can work in this situation. Watch how he takes a snap. And it’s Jawan Johnson once again. This time, a little bit more space here, able to create a window and able to win that matchup. So again, you certainly saw some of the positives here for Tyler Shuck, the plays that, you know, reason they drafted him. This one, it’s Brandon Cooks trying to get into a gap in coverage and third third and seven. I mean, you know, not these are obvious passing situations. If we’re being honest, Chuck pretty much was only in obvious passing situations because it was down so much. Part of why it’s a tough situation for a young quarterback to get into is because, you know, the the pass rushers aren’t thinking about run defense in this situation. You see Brandon Cooks though running a nice route. There’s definitely a bit of space. And for Chuck, as I pos it right here, already in the throwing motion, getting the ball out of his hands quickly. That’s exactly what he does. Gets the ball out of his hands. They’re able to pick up a first down. So, you know, some nice things here by by Tyler Shuck. It’s nothing crazy. I mean, he didn’t have any great highlight reel level plays or anything like that, but getting the ball out of your hands quickly is certainly an important thing to do uh for a young quarterback. I guess young being relative, he is 26, but for a rookie quarterback, right, in this one as well, second down and three. This one’s a little bit of an easier one, but still, you’re going to try and scheme stuff up to get Joan Johnson once again open past the first down marker. Shuck takes the snap. And again, this is just well schemed. The the setup route works. You now have a little bit of space uh where there now isn’t a defensive back in that area because of this. Chuck makes a nice throw. A little bit high, but hey, you good enough that they’re able to make the play work and convert the first down right there. So, you know, again, there was a good chunk of this. And in fact, I I only showed three of these plays and, you know, I could have shown another 10. Like, there were plenty of these types of plays. And for him moving forward, you just hope that you can get more of those, right? Because there’s also plenty of this. And this is something that you just have to wonder. I mean, it’s so hard getting thrown into a game in the middle of the game. You’re not used to first team reps. And now you have to figure out, you know, all of this stuff. You know, now Rasheed Shahed running a deep shot. Tyler Shuck isn’t getting a ton of first team reps. So, he doesn’t have a great he doesn’t have great chemistry with Rasheed Shed, right? Watch as Shahid is going to run just a great route right here. I mean, he’s blowing by rookie corner Benjamin Morrison and has a chance for a touchdown. So, again, 6 and 1/2 minutes. If you get a touchdown, do you have a chance? Well, it’s going to be tough. I mean, you would need a three and out, a score, a three and out, a score. Uh, like it would take a lot, right? But either way, getting a touchdown makes you feel good. Helps everything out. And Chuck just it’s a bit over Shed’s head. And again, how much of that is Shahed has great speed. Chuck doesn’t exactly know how to handle that. So, he’s maybe th going a bit too much, right? It some people would say not an easy guy to overthrow, but it’s actually quite easy when you have someone with unique speed because you’re trying to take advantage of it perfectly. And it wasn’t a horrible throw. Uh Shade maybe could have had a chance, but ultimately just not enough. Again, there was some pressure, but Chuck did a good job throwing it before. I think that affected him. I think it’s just again these are the types of things that if you’re a Saints fan you’re hoping can be fixed if Chuck does end up becoming the starter which as of as of right now we don’t know exactly what’s going to happen with all of that but again whether it’s next week or in the future. I wouldn’t look at the numbers that Chuck put in this game and say oh he played horrible. I I would look at the tape and say there were some bad plays for sure things he needs to work on. Um, but also I think a lot of the bad plays you could argue are just chemistry things as well. And there was some nice things, you know, here. Although, again, I kind of felt the same way with Rattler, right? Is Rattler will make these mistakes, but he also will have some plays that work. So, it’s hard to say exactly. But yeah, that’s kind of my thought with Tyler Shuck is it’s hard to give too much of a read, get too much of a read on what he did. But those are my opinions on how he played. Let me know in the comments below what do you think about Tyler Shuck and his performance. Always love hearing from y’all. And of course, as always, thanks for watching. [Music] Heat. Hey, Heat. 1. There once was a quarterback named Shough,
It’s mispronounced but sounds like “Luck.”
    And maybe “pluck,”
    And also “duck.”
Not drafting Jaxson Dart Saints fans screamed, “F—k!”

  2. There was clearly a little bit of timing/chemistry issues but that's quite plausibly due to the lack of practice with the guys he's playing with. He might have some potential. If he does start, you wanna see if getting the starting practice reps fixes some of that up. If it does, we might have something interesting

  3. I don't think Rattler played bad at all, not bad enough to give up on him. He has a ton of upside. He made some nice throws, has some good accuracy and arm. That offense is terrible, not many QBs are going to look good back there. The fumble was a good defesive play. The interception wasn't horrible either, not like he was making a bad read or being inaccurate. Thats a very tall and long DE who made a great play on the the ball. Shough's going to have it rough. He looks like a statue back there. He was in he the game was wrapped and Tampa was just timing it out.

  4. The issue with some or these receivers and tight ends is that they dont run past the sticks to convert they run like a yard short of the sticks. Like with juwans 4th down its 4th and 2 and his ass runs a yard and a half and stops before the sticks. In that situation he needs to run 3 yards if hes gonna run that kinda route. Same thing happened with olave/shaheed not running past the sticks on a 3rd or 4th down

  5. Brother if he starts over Rattler, to me this like Trevor Siemian starting over Taysom. Nobody is going to want to see Shough after 2 games trust me. I'm definitely not wasting my time watching next week's game. Once Rattler learns to actually go through his progressions, he will actually be great.

  6. Ok, 1st you use the TV tape and not a coaches film or even the all -22 copy to do a film study?? And you want to be taken seriously?? TS's pass to JJ on that out was placed perfectly, hit him in the hands and would have been a 1st but as usual, JJ drops it. TS almost the whole game made the right reads and good throws. Yeah he had a couple bad ones but how many were dropped?? The pick was 100% on Olave , it was a hitch and the throw was not perfect but it hit him squarely in the hands and was there with plenty of space for him to catch and secure the ball.

For coming in cold with almost no 1st team reps since pre-season I thought TS did quite well, if he had hit Sheed on that long ball for a TD it would have been an excellent 1st time for him. And if out OTs could have had even decent blocks on the last play of the game he would have had a TD to Olave in the EZ

  7. On the Shahid overthrow

Is Beard the receiver did a second move after he had beaten the DB

If he doesn’t do that, he’s still wide open, and the ball hits him in the hands

  8. I gave him ish but i like that he throws hard i like rattler but he throws like hes shooting basketball if that makes sense and i just be like put some heat on it

  9. Rattler needs time to develop. We are only halfway through the season and he showed he improved from last year. He had two bad games and you just bench him?? Why give up on him now? We aint a playoff team whats the point? We can go to shough the last 3 or 4 games of the season if rattler kept playing bad. Now we throwing a rookie in there with pressure to win games and do better for no reason. Lets say shough looks better than rattler and we win a few games.. For what? A worse draft pick?

  10. Honestly watching the game 2 balls over thrown and 4 catchable drops honestly could’ve been threatening overtime if the professional athletes made the play and shough didn’t over throw shaheed

  11. Just a heads up….your zone circles are off. Imagine you're looking straight down at the field from a drone's view and place your zones accordingly… otherwise, they'll always be off, because you're lining them up with an angled camera view. Good content…just wanted to help you out. Hope this made sense.
