POST CAST: Wild Battle But Lose 9th Straight Game to Jets #minnesotawild #mnwild

an alltimer um uniform matchup. Alltimer uniform matchup tonight. Slapfest. Um hey, we got all of our favorite elements tonight. uh a multi-goal deficit, a couple of pointlank chances that somehow get whiffed on and a quick exit in OT. Uh I if you are going with the literal definition of played better, yes, but pretty much all the same problems still applied in tonight’s game. in the Wild losing OT 4 to3 to the Winnipeg Jets. They’ve now lost nine straight games to the Jets. Nine straight games to the Winnipeg Jets. It was better by the definition of the word better, but it still was all the same things that we’ve seen every game this season. It’s uh it continues to get laid early. Um we’ll we’ll break down all the action, but um we we didn’t learn anything new tonight. Uh we just continued to see a continuation of what has happened so far this season. You are Locked on Wild Postcast, part of Locked On Minnesota on the Locked on Podcast Network. Your team every day. The Minnesota Wild fall 4 to3 in overtime to the Winnipeg Jets. A game in which the Minnesota Wilds trailed two- nothing. They battled back to tie the score at 2-2 and then briefly took a three-2 lead before giving up the game tying goal and one minute into overtime they lose. And it was the offense was able to generate tonight. The defense was able to limit some of what the Jets did. But Philip Gustiffson had a rough night. Carl Capri off hacked the puck up in OT and um and the Jets capitalized on it and scored. Uh it it’s it’s a repeat of the same problem, folks. You you play you have a better stretch of play, but that Juel Erikson look he could not have been any closer to the front of the net. If he was in the net and you you can’t score there, that’s a problem. you’ve got more looks right at the front of the net and you can’t capitalize on those. That’s a problem. Yes, the Wild did go to the front of the net more, which is a good thing, but that has not been consistent so far this year. And I I about lost my mind. I would have been despondent in this had Gustaf Nyquist been credited for the game tying goal, but it just it comes down to the same things. Like you’re you’re getting you’re getting scoring from a handful of players, but nobody else is nobody else is generating. Nobody else is contributing. And until that changes, until that changes, this this is going to continue to be what we see. Um I I I like I don’t know. I I’m I’m getting frankly kind of astounded at the number of opportunities that this team just is incapable of putting in the net. Right in close. Statistically tonight, much cleaner at least uh for the Wilds. You know, they outshot the Winnipeg Jets consistently. considerably because they did generate offense. They had an expected goals tonight of 4.09, but again, you’ve got a couple of instances on the power play where you can’t capitalize. And beyond that, like faceoffs, hits and blocks are pretty much uh driven by the situation uh for the Wild offense here tonight. 4.09 expected goals. They had 55 unblocked shot attempts tonight. 39 of them were at low danger. Nine were at medium danger and seven were at high danger. They scored a goal in all three facets. Low danger, medium danger, high danger. They also had a rebound goal, which was nice. And that’s what you have to do consistently. That’s what you have to do consistently in this league is you have to consistently crash. You have to consistently get to the front of the net. Especially against Connor Hellbuck. You’re not going to beat Connor Hellbuk by shooting from outside. Those perimeter shots are automatic. I’m surprised he doesn’t yawn when he fields them. So, offensively, it was better tonight. And if you look at the defense, too, the Winnipeg Jets managed 2.41 4-1 expected goals and Philip Gustoson gave up four 1.58 goals above uh below expected. For the Winnipeg Jets, they had 36 unblocked shot attempts, 25 low danger, 10 medium danger, one high danger. They scored on their lone high danger look. They scored a medium danger and they had two low danger goals. The goalending the goalending has to get better. The goalending has got to get substantially better for this team. Both goalies and the Carell Capri off turnovers are pretty much single-handedly dooming this team. Another big one in overtime that leads directly to the Winnipeg Jets scoring the game-winning goal. that you the carelessness the carelessness with the puck is concerning. You have a talent disadvantage for pretty much every team that you play against and so you can’t treat it like you have equal talent that to where they do. Um, and they just, you know, they’re they’re just whether it be middle of middle of the zone, top of the D zone, um there there just are way too many of those types of turnovers at various spots in the zone that lead to um pretty much exclusive chances for the opponent. So, we are now 11 games into the season for the it is way too early for you to be sounding the alarm bells. You’re being super dramatic and frankly I’m sick of it crowd. By the time we get 10 more by the time we get nine more games in, we’ll be at the quarter pole of the season. And if 10 games in is too quick of a trigger, what’s 20 games then? That seems like a representative sample size for me. So again, like and like there there were some nice there were some nice moments in this game like Brock Faber putting a couple of strong games together. Um that’s great. I’m I’m real happy that he has uh he has been better the last couple of games, but guess what? There are still plenty of guys that are still not putting in what needs to be put in. It just there there are still plenty of guys on this team that that need to take a look at what they’re doing and need to offer more, need to add more to what this team’s doing. Because if you if you’re still relying on about four different players to score, that’s pretty easy to defend. It’s pretty easy for opponents to be able to defend. So, it it’s just it and can we can we get to a point where we get a little more visually appealing hockey? Um, it’s like these teams, it’s like these teams just were in quicksand tonight. So, it it’s I don’t know. It it it was just another just another in a series of games in which we uh we see the same things played out. So, as far as the time to go on Hines crowd, not going to happen. um because this is going to be viewed as a uh step in the right direction and maybe it was but I I guess I don’t know I can’t call it supreme progress considering the things that we saw that just continue to be continue to be carried out in perpetuity. Uh as far as the Jets go, let me let me hit you with this. So Kyle Connor scored. That’s a topline goal for the Winnipeg Jets. So, let’s let’s keep track of this. Let’s keep track of this at home. Kyle Connor scored. That’s a topline goal for the Jets. Vladislav Netsikov scored. That’s a second line goal for the Jets. Nino scored. That’s a third line goal for the Jets. And Gabe Valardi scored. That’s another topline goal. So, they got two of their four from their top line, but they also got a goal from the second and the third lines. So, that’s that’s what we call that’s what we call in the business scoring depth. And for the Wild tonight, Carell Capri off, Marcus Johansson, and Brock Faber. Of the names, Brock Faber is a new addition to the list. But beyond that, Carrill has been one of the top scorers. And thank you, Freddy, for bringing this up. In addition to the Jewel Erikson knock on the door goal, Danilov had one right out in front too. Connor Halabuk was sprawled out in front. And you’ve got what they call the um the yawning goalmouth, I think is the the term that they use. Um sent straight over the net. straight over wide open net. I would love to know and I don’t know I don’t know if there’s a way to quantify this statistically. I would love to know where the Minnesota Wild stand compared to other teams as far as within five feet and not being able to capitalize on those opportunities cuz there have been plenty. There are two of them. There are two of them a game at least. I don’t I don’t get it. I don’t get it. Uh why don’t we do this? Um, it looks like I did see some people commenting that um we’ve gotten some reaction from particular players um from Joe Smith. Brock Faber felt the Wild deserved better in this one. Played the right way, stuck with it, believes that the results will come. Um, I thought John Hines had some comments, too. But, uh, again, like you just got to start bearing those chances. like you take care of those two opportunities right out in front of the net and this game never gets to overtime and you get the two points and then we could be talking about, hey, they won one, but this team this team is at a point right now where they just they they cannot get those little chances to go. I thought the jerseys looked sick. At least there was that. Um I I thought the jerseys looked sick. I thought uh I thought that was a fun jersey battle between the two teams, but it was really it was really not what I would call watchable hockey. And can we talk about these penalties, too? Can we talk about the officiating for a hot second? I don’t typically do this unless it warrants being brought up. But if that is a if that’s a penalty on Matt Baldy, the one that he the one that he got called for the high stick, that’s that’s just an atrocious call. That’s just awful. Like you you’ve got to I don’t know what the right answer is, but you have to be able to review that. Like it’s mind-numbingly bad. The stick was on Baldi stick was on the complete other side of his body from the Winnipeg player. And you know what’s bad? when the official goes over and apologizes and says, “Hey, turns out that was that was a bad was a bad call.” I don’t know. Give them ch give them like maybe expand the challenge system cuz could you imagine like Winnipeg didn’t score on that thankfully, but could you imagine if they had we would have seen the most fire from John Hines in his tenure. But it didn’t end up hurting them. It still, however, was atrocious. We did get the makeup call, which is which is a fair point, but still optics hideous. That was that was just real bad. I tell you what, let’s break because we’ve got some uh we got some good questions in the chat um that I want to discuss because we we mentioned it in Sunday’s live show. Uh for those that uh for those that are, you know, looking at coaching replacements, I think we’ve already got I think we already know how that is going to play out. We’ll talk about that and more as we continue our postcast. the Wild lose four to three in OT and uh we’ll continue the therapy session after this. Today’s postcast is brought to you by Monarch. I hate that that rhymes cuz I don’t I’m not really in a rhyming mood right now. Uh I want to start with this one. Um let’s go to Ezekiel. Ideal coaching candidate. This is something that I just popped into my head that um I I think we need to discuss here. So, let’s assume that this continues. Let’s assume that this slide continues and that the Minnesota Wild do make a move. They do make a change. I I think I already know who is uh I think I already know who’s coming in. I think Greg Cronin’s going to be the one that will be coaching the uh the Wild next. I have nothing to go off of here, but it just kind of makes sense. Think about it. Cronin was coaching the Anaheim Ducks and you know he comes here to take an AHL job despite there being NHL jobs open. Connect the dots. Connect the dots. It just makes sense to me that you would say, “And if we make a if we make a coaching change, um, we are going to we’ll we’ll give you uh we’ll give you that opportunity.” It just makes sense. You would be the next in line, so to speak. Um, I have nothing to go off of with that, but that just seems to be that seems to me the likely route that this would go. However, there’s another angle to this that needs to be discussed. That would be the third coach. That would be the third coach that Bill Garren has himself installed. And that feels like a little too many, doesn’t it? Doesn’t that feel like one coach too many? And so, let’s discuss this. If there were to be a change in the GM chair, I’m going to tell you who I want for my candidate right now. I’m going to tell you right now because I I think that’s the more I think that’s the more compelling case. I’m going to give you a name. I just have to pull it up here. Oh, of course. Uh, I want whoever Bill Zto’s number one lieutenant is in Florida as the general manager. That’s who I want. I want his number one. I want his number one assistant. Bill Zitto has been one of the best GMs in the NHL for the last several seasons. He is an aggressive general manager. He is somebody who is not sat on his laurels while his team got comfortable. And so if there is an organization to pull from, it’s the Florida Panthers. That’s who I want. That would be who I would pick as my ideal next candidate because again like this this is how this this is how this works is when you’re looking who who should we pull from? Who should we be who should we be looking at winning organizations? Florida Panthers one of the best. I don’t know about Edmonton because their roster is Thank you, Mike, for giving me the name. This is my number one candidate right here. assistant GM and analytics Sunny Ma to be honest I didn’t know that he was an assistant jam in Florida until this very moment but the point still stands go get a top and it’s the same thing for coaching you either go get an upand cominging up and cominging AHL coach or top assistant now big ticket put in Scott White, assistant for the Dallas Stars. That would also be a fine answer. That’d be a fine answer. You go get an assistant GM from one of those teams that has become a a winner or an assistant for one of the better coaches in the league. it that’ll never happen though. So it that’s just me. That is pipe dream. That’s pipe dream population me, bro. uh because those there there are already there already plans in place if we get to that point because you got a lot of there’s a lot of uh ground I think from a wild perspective before they get there. Do we see changes with assistant coaches? Now that’s interesting. That could be a possibility, but again, it depends on it depends on what the feeling is in the organization. Um, so it just it it I just I don’t get the sense that there’s any real panic yet from the Minnesota Wild organization. So until there is, they’re just going to keep humming with humming with what they have. Um they’re just going to keep they’re just going to keep clanking down the road with what they have until such point as there has to be a a move made. So, does it seem like Carrill hasn’t been the same since last year? Seems to lose the puck often. Also sitting at the top of the zone on the power play. No passes into the middle. Uh I you know this is interesting because I feel like I feel like with his injury situation the last couple of years we have um I think we just assumed he’s kind of a slow starter. I’m kind of wondering if maybe that’s the case. Um the power play again like I I don’t want to look a ton into power play scoring because you’re being put in a situation where that’s what you’re supposed to do. So the fact that Carrill tonight had his first five on five goal of the season, that’s a bit of a concern. Um so I don’t know. It bears watching though cuz the it’s not only just the turnovers themselves, but it’s also there were a couple of instances tonight where Jets players just straight up um straight up just took the puck off his stick, which is also kind of a concern. It’s the what what what was the phrase what was the phrase that I used in uh Monday’s episode? Um I can’t remember. Attentiveness and effort and attention I think is what it was. Um, the truth is Carell’s contract e f this team spirit over. He’s just Suitor 2.0. Um, I mean I don’t know. Sudter could literally not move. I I get the the point. I get the point though. a 38-year-old winger and a Panthers healthy scratch will fix everything. Um, yeah, I like there was a there’s a huge sigh of relief today that Matt Sakarelloo came back to practice. He’s not anywhere close to being able to play in a game. Um he he’s still several weeks out from playing in a game and it’s not gonna that’s not going to fix it’s not going to fix much of what is ailing this team is just it it’s not going to fix the fact this is just an old roster. And you are at a point now, you know, the funny part about this too is you’re in a point now where you are trying to shelter the youngsters in the lineup because of fear of mistakes being made. when you could have really you could have substantially paved the runway last year and the year before that and the year before that. You could have paved the runway to make it a little easier for them as opposed to just throwing them out of a moving car. And now, you know, you had Faber, you had Buham and Yurichek playing on the third pair, and you’re basically trying to you you’re basically just trying to hide him. And you’ve got Denil Yurov on the fourth line trying to hide him. You’re trying to hide him with Tyler Pitlick and Vinnie Hinestroa. Like you you could have prevented this. You could have prevented these hiccups from happening by just paying more attention to it as opposed to assuming that the guys are going to come in, they’re going to play perfect hockey in the limited roles that they’re given. So, you know, I I try to kind of I try to kind of dive into the did we learn anything on a nightly basis? And this is a great question, too. How many goals do the Wilds give up in front of the net by not tying guys up? All of them. All of the goals. It happened again tonight. The the Nino goal was literally this inability to contain the front of the net. literally this that that is I don’t know which problem is my least favorite of all of these problems but um I I think just the general lack of netfront on both ends I think that’s the big one I think that’s the one that I’m just generally frustrated with the most because you say you’re going to be a big team, a physical team. Where, when, why, how, same problems, folks. Should the Wild have offered someone like Burns, a big right-handed Dman that the Wild desperately lack? Honestly, I would not have been I would not have have been opposed to Burns. I mean, he is certainly on a little on the older side. Oh, and the Dallas Stars just locked in Thomas Harley. Eight years, $10.5 million per year. Where are they getting all this money? This is this is this is preposterous. Spurgeon leading all wild defenseman in hits is and I’m not like I’m not refuting I’m not refuting it big ticket cuz I like I I’m just I’m blown away by it is is why I’m reacting the way that I am. That makes zero sense whatsoever. Like if that’s the case, yeah, we’re in trouble. And you know, to the trade piece, you’re still about a month out from trades or at least two weeks, three weeks. Um, you’re you’re you got to fight you got to fight your way out of it. But uh you got to fight your way out of it. But as we talked about on Monday, these are not new problems. Falling behind by multiple goals at home is not a new problem. The inability to clear out the front of the net is not a new problem. The inability to dominate in the high danger area is not a new problem. Like this is all this has all been a slow bleed. This has all been a slow bleed, a slow burn, and we’re just seeing the remnants of it play out here. Um, yeah, and this is a good point, too, is if you if you start the season even slightly better than this, it’s not a talking point. But starting the season when all the eyes are on you, starting the season in this fashion that just hangs over you the whole season. Like if you have a if you have a skid right at the start of 2026, nobody bats an eye. The Wild have made that a trademark pretty much. but you do it at the beginning of the season and it is just it’s a a dark cloud that hangs over the uh the entirety of the year. Um I think that’s going to wrap it for tonight, but I want to leave you with one thing that is going to ruin all of your nights. Justin Brazo has six goals on the season. Six goals on the season. And with that, I have nothing further. Six goals on the season, 12 points in 11 games. He’s averaging over a point per game. I got nothing further for you. Thanks for joining everybody. As always, make sure to hit that like button. Um I will comb back through the comments here um to uh to look at a couple things. KG, I know you had a question at the end. Um I’ll I’ll look at that for an episode here later this week. Um but main thing is we are the same team before tonight that we are now. Same issues, same concerns, same everything, but Justin Brazzo has six goals. Think about that. Peace out. Thanks for joining tonight. Make sure to uh follow and subscribe so you don’t miss out on any new episodes throughout the week. We’ve got you covered every Monday through Friday as part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. We are your team each and every day.

The Wild dropped to 3-5-3 and 1-2-2 at home, as they fell behind 2-0 in the 1st period. Former Wild forward Nino Niederreiter tied the score later in the 3rd, and Kyle Connor scored the game winner for the Jets less than a minute into OT for the Jets. The Wild were 1/4 on the Power Play and Filip Gustavsson stopped 18 of 22 shots in net for the Wild. The Wild will host Pittsburgh on Thursday for their next game.

  1. I figured missing Adam lowery, Cole perfetti and Dylan sanberg was going to sink the jets until they return but 7-3 so far has to be making jets fans happy. I wonder when those players are returning. Then they will look closer to last year.

  2. This team has a much bigger problem, it's called Craig Leipold. I never hear any of the beat writters, Russo or anyone else address this. Craig Leipolds record as an owner the past 17 years is horrible: missed the playoffs 6 times, won the first round 2 times in seventeen years and never made it past the 2nd round! An owner can spend all the money they have, however if they have no hockey mind it doesn't matter! Plain and simple Leipold does not have a hockey mind to bring on the right scouts, management and coaches to compete for a Stanley Cup in Minnesota or anywhere else. He's the elephant in the room. His past ownership record of 17 years proves this! Same results in Nashville, never won a playoff round in 10 years of ownership. He runs a fantastic business taking money from the fans and making the playoffs just enough to keep the fans hopes alive. Nothing will ever change until the fans quit showing up and fire Craig Leipold by forcing him to sell.

  3. Unfortunately the jets absolutely own us. And they were very injured as well. Let's just face the facts this isnt even our coach's fault. Our gm and owner can't build a good team. Hynes can only do so much with what he's given.

  4. The worst part about last night is the Wild actually think they played well. Delusional!!!
    Anyway………………..
    Get Zeev back on PP1
    Healthy scratch Wlad
    Send Foligno to IR
    Call up Ohgren and Haight
    Send Jones and Pitlick down
Give Yesper the next 3 starts
Put Boldy Rossi Kirill back 2gether
    Fire Carter and LaPanta

  5. Hynes postgame comments were so ridiculous I would have fired him before he left last night.
He’s gonna ā€œtalk to Kirillā€ DUDE he’s turning the puck over bc he has to try to hard to make something happen bc of your shitty offense!! ā€œTrending in the right directionā€ dude it’s not preseason. Moral victories don’t mean shit, you didn’t have the team ready to start the season. Almost rooting against the wild for the next couple to see if they will fire Hynes

  6. Bill not trying to trade for nick Robertson or chinakhov.. not firing hynes.. letting brazeau, the only great trade he has made other than buium, walk after he was horribly underutilized by hynes..
Yeah, im down to just get rid of guerin.

  7. Brodin is starting to look less injured and more his self. He stripped Scheifle (didn’t check the spelling) on a prime scoring chance without taking a penalty. I’m hoping he can help Zeev develop the defensive side of his game as they are both strong skaters.

  8. Watched a few Wild highlights and I've come to the conclusion that Marcus Folgino is the problem and had no business playing in this league from day 1. Guy weasled his way to the show using his dad as leverage. While Marcus was playing minor hockey in Hershey, it's evident is father Mike had a sense that Marcus would not have a career in hockey if he did not intervene in some way. This was not the case for his borther Nick, as he was good enough to crack the US U-17 roster during that time. You'll see that Mike Foligno's move to Sudbury to take on the Wolves headcoaching job was strategic because he resigned from that position shortly after Marcus had his foot in the door to the NHL. Go talk to ex players that played with him on the wolves and even minor hockey in Sudbury. He was a 2nd liner in AA, 3rd liner in AAA, and a 4th liner in the OHL at best. Until this parasite is removed, this team is going nowhere.

  9. As for the Gus, he didnt have the help he usually got last year, he pretty much been on an island this season except for his shut out. However you hit the nail on the head and drove it totally thru the 2×4 about krills sloppy puck handling, i dont know what the answer would be other than he should start practicing his puck skills and passing skills, dumb luck isnt going to work for him this year. Spurgeon had a real bad game, if it was one off, ok. If it was due to an injury then he should have been put on IR.
