[Deniz Selman] The #Eagles offense is going 3 & out at a higher rate than any offense since 2014, while somehow scoring touchdowns at the 3rd highest rate in the NFL this season.

  1. The failure to make gains with first down runs has been just crippling for our drives. Hopefully we can take the steps to overcome that.

  2. That suggests the defense is doing its job and getting the offense back on the field. That or getting blown out

  3. Yeah theres not really anygame this year where I’ve thought our defense was the defining problem.

This does make feel good about Hurts though, I’ll take the 3 and outs over turnovers.

  4. It’s the Patullo effect. 1st time play caller with top talent at every position. The 3 and outs will get better as he matures as a play caller. It’s really that simple. The last two games have been promising, he has got a ways to go though to prove consistency.

  5. It’s because we can’t run the ball. Watch after the bye. I bet we’re way better here as people get healthier.

Also modern analytics indicate more boon or bust offenses are good. Big plays are so important, it’s hard to drive down the field.

Im not sure that difference between 3 and out vs 6 and out is a HUGE deal, aside from late game situations.

  6. maybe we shouldn’t have thrown 3 curl routes behind the sticks in a row to AJB that one time.

    and other kevin patullo oddities

  7. Boom or bust. Boom due to the quality of our skill-position players. Bust due to a lot of poor scheming and conservative playcalling in medium- and long-yardage situations.

  8. 2+ weeks to prepare for a top 10 defense in prime time will tell us a lot about this offense

  9. Things have been trending up the last two weeks. Wake me up when this is still the same by week 17

  10. Now do from last two games only. I don’t kind facts to cause change, but I also rather see game to game and rolling average stats. I imagine it’s getting better

  11. That felt less true last week. It’s a concern for sure, but we’re also improving in that area. I’d like to see where we match up after Week 12 is over.

  12. Patullo isn’t off the hook for me yet. We’ve looked better the past two weeks but I want sustained consistency against good teams. Giants & Vikings D is good but we need to perform at the same level or better against the upcoming stretch of games.

  13. Everyone blames the OC. But the OC isn’t the reason the OL has been injured and ineffective, which has been a big reason that runs are getting stuffed.

Meanwhile, the Eagles currently have the most efficient red zone offense in NFL history and the OC gets no credit from fans.

    Make that all make sense.

  14. This is like the way Phillies play ball. Swing for the fences or strike out. Spoiler alert: it didn’t end well.

  15. Not starting inside our own redzone will help with that.

    Also cleaning up pre-snap penalties

  16. Because we have the best red zone efficiency in football at an absurd 85%. It’s definitely not sustainable, but more consistency on offense will lead to more points all game.

  17. Honestly tracks. This year’s team is the football version of baseball three true outcomes. Except the eagles only have 2.

When they score they do it fast and with lots of deep balls and big runs. When they don’t, it’s a slow crawl of 4 three and outs after another, due to missed assignments or bad play calling. They are the guy with a low batting average but 56 HR.

  18. This was evident even in last weeks game, which has been their best so far this season. I think they were 0-4 on third down to start the game.

  19. Why I have lots of faith in the offense. The 3 & outs and run game issues were not consistent problems historically for the offense. Felt like an outlier.

The red zone has been schemed up spectacularly.

  20. Let’s hope the offense normalizes hard towards reducing that 3 & out rate as I imagine the red zone rate is likely to go down.
