Christian McCaffrey, 49ers’ offense shine in dominant Week 9 win vs. Giants | NBC Sports Bay Area

[Music] The 49ers took a big bite out of the Big Apple. They take this one 34-24. They’re 6 and3 and they take the right road on that fork called week nine against the San the New York Giants. This is 49ers postgame live brought to you by Toyota, Matt Mayoko, Rod Brooks, Carlos Ramirez. 34 points. That’s a season high for the offense. Most points since week 17 last season when they dropped 40 to 34 against the Lions. The offense did their job, Matt, today. Yeah. Yeah. No doubt about it. And they set the tone early. You know, the first drive. I talked to Kyle Shanahan last week about the openers, the first 24 plays, 12 pass plays, two 12 running plays. And those first two drives, you really saw that they had a script together. They they went for it. They knew what they were wanted to do offensively from a running game standpoint, from a passing game standpoint. They kind of mixed it up early and then they settled in and just pounded them. I love how they set him up with the short pass game early. Then that opened things up because the Giants clearly were going to do what they could which wasn’t enough at the end, but they were clearly going to do what they could at the beginning to stop McCaffrey from getting ahead of Steam at the beginning of the game. The Giants saw that they par or the Niners saw that they parried with the short passing game. Then that opened up lanes for McAffrey and then the Niners started to get chunk plays. That’s what I loved about this offense is that once they established the run game, they were ripping off plays of 10 yards, 12 yards, 15 yards. They had, by our count, 16 plays of 10 or more yards. The Niners played well offensively. Defense got him the ball back. We saw complimentary football today. We didn’t see that last week. I think this season for forever, we’ve looked at the games, Matt, and thought this is not the physical football brand that the 49ers got used to under Kyle Shanahan. This might be the first really physically imposing uh outing by the 49ers on the offensive side this year. I think they did it against the Falcons, but they just haven’t been able to find that consistency. Right. Yeah. And it was complimentary football. Uh you know, the way this game started, it looked a lot like it did last week against the Houston Texans where in this game the Giants just took the ball down the field without any resistance and scored a touchdown. The difference was the 49ers responded offensively and then Robert Salah found the right buttons to push. That defense played very well into the second half. Now we push the right button. We go out to Metife in New York with her 49ers reporter live on the postgame wrap-up. That’s Jennifer Lee Chan. Jen, welcome to the show. Uh what do you make of the run game? What did you see from Christian McAffrey and Brian Robinson Jr.? I mean, I think having Spencer Burford there at left guard make a huge difference. The way it opened up lanes, I think it helped stabilize the offensive line and you saw it on the field. I mean, after a tough game in Houston, this offense really got rolling today. This team is next man up mentality. You mentioned Bford. What about Cleveland Ferrell and the other pieces that were just debuting today for the 49ers? Yeah, I mean that was huge. Cleveland Ferrell gets his first sack back with the Niners for the second round. Even though even though Pon White wasn’t there on the stat sheet, I mean, he was there pushing the Kapaka. He was there on the inside. There are a few different things that I wasn’t expecting to see today, though. So, it was an interesting game by the 49ers. You see the guys coming in behind me. They were all very excited, especially after such a roller coaster first half of the season. Uh, Jennifer, final one. We know we’ll get more information down the week on Mike Williams’ status. What did you see from him? Any vibe, any energy coming out of that injury from him? Yeah, I was actually right here in the tunnel when he walked by me and he was very distraught, put his towel on his face, was kind of saying things that I couldn’t hear, but very disappointed, I’m sure. Uh, this defensive line has been decimated by injuries. Obviously, Keon White added to the mix and Clean Ferrell like you said. But they might need another body coming up here on the trade deadline because they have lost so many players. They were lucky to get Jordan Elliot back and Samo Kawanu back on the field today after being nearly looking like they were going to be out again, but this defensive line is decimated. They’re going to need some extra help. That’s Jennifer Lee Chan. Great job as always live from New York. Jen, thank you so much. We’ll see you on the week on 49ers now and also 49ers talk the podcast. Overreactions brought to you by Toyota. The game results this season a season high 34 points. Rod, the overreaction is the offense is back. Is that an overreaction? No, I don’t think it’s an overreaction at all. Um, we saw what they’re ca what they’re capable of and this was the perfect opponent to get right against. We talked about it in the pregame. The Giants were the worst run defense in the league and once the Niners were able to exploit that, there was nothing the Giants could do. So, with the Niners getting that run game going outside and inside, obviously George KD is back. I thought wide receiver play, Jawan Jennings had his best game of the season. And we were talking about this in the green room. Clearly, this is the healthiest that he’s been all season. Eventually, you’re going to get Ricky Pieraw back and obviously Brandon Iayuk in the mix as well. So, I mean, you could see this thing actually coming in full flower pretty soon. And for you, Matt, you said this game would define what the 49ers are for the season. So, what’s the overreaction? What are they going forward? I think they’re a playoff team. I the way they started this season at 3 and 0, that gives them a lot of runway to be kind of an average team for the final 14 weeks of the season. And right now, you know, it’s been a a win, a loss, a win, a loss, and it it just keep going that way. The 49ers needed to avoid having two bad games in a row. They did that. And now they are very much on pace to be a playoff team well into the season in that playoff contention. It makes such a huge difference for the 49ers to be six and three going into that game against the Rams as opposed to 5-4. Now, I mean, obviously it’s a big game against the Rams, but it’s not this like do or die. They need to win it. They probably do need to win if they want to win the NFC West, but there’s going to be three teams coming out of that division to make the playoffs. And listen, when it comes to this offense, it wasn’t that long ago everyone was asking the question rightfully, hey, what’s wrong with the rush rushing game? What’s wrong with the running game? Why can’t the Niners do what they’ve been doing for years, which is run the football? They got carried by the pass game, and now with the run game coming into the mix, I mean, teams on the horizon. Look at the Niners are going, “Okay, they got this thing figured out.” Listen, the 49ers have made several right decisions on the field. This one they made off the field, and it’s proven to be the right call on the field. This is the right decision brought to you by Vernardi Gerata hiring this guy, bringing in M. Jones for a two-year deal as your backup quarterback through seven games played. The completion percentage really high, 67%, the passing yards, the yards per attempt, 10 to five touchdown to interception ratio. I dare you find a better backup quarterback in the league playing right now than M. Jones. There is none. There is none because he started his seventh game for the 49ers. They’re five and two. Show me another quarterback in the league that can keep the team together like M. Jones did. And you know what? The 49ers hope this is the last time we see M. Jones. You know, nothing against him. He he did a heck of a job. But Brock Pury, there’s a very good chance he’ll be back out there against the Rams. And once Brock Freddy is out there, they hope he stays out there. But man, kudos to M. Jones. He did his job. Check this out from Josh Dubal of the AP on Twitter. M. Jones had TD passes on its first true drives of the game for the second time this season. It also happened against the Rams. The only other times a QB has done that under Shanahan, Brock Perie, Brock Perie, Brock Purie, and Jimmy G back in 2019. And I just want to point out that Brock that M. Jones did it without a traditional running game with the exception of today and the Atlanta game. So kudos to M. Jones for for what he did. But I tell you what, man, having Christian McCaffrey there makes your life a whole lot easier. Yeah. And just going back quickly to what Jennifer said about Mike El Williams, we know we’ll know this Matt perhaps tomorrow with the K Shanahan uh presser, but it you just can’t wait to just see what will happen. It it just every single game someone goes down. And hopefully it’s not significant, but we we don’t know it. You know what? Hearing what Jennifer had to say, her observation of how distraught he looked, towel over his head, this is a guy that knows his body. This is a guy that in Georgia played through an ankle injury throughout the year. So, uh boy, it it really makes you wonder uh the significance of this injury. But yeah, the 49ers have a depth issue. Uh they’ll be hopefully I think they they expect to get Bryce Huff back. Uh but yeah, the trade deadline’s Tuesday and you know they’re going to be in the market to add to that defensive line group. The Niners were this close to getting out of Metife Stadium and off of that turf without without any serious injuries. Now we don’t know. Again, we will have to wait. Jennifer Lee Chan reporting that she did see Michael Williams distraught with a towel over his head about that knee injury. We’ll see what happens. Whatever we do find out, you will know as well. At home, this is NBC, the home of the best 49ers coverage out there. Field vision here on Postgame Live. That is brought to you by Zenny, the official eyewear of the San Francisco 49ers, the top receivers. Yeah, that’s not a typo. Your best running back, Rod, is your best receiver. I mean, he’s a stud, man. You know, as we were talking about earlier, all credit to uh to M. Jones for playing the way that he did and doing it without a traditional running game and doing it with injuries in the pass game. But boy, Christian McCaffrey makes you a much better football player. And again, shout out to Jawan Jennings. has been a rough season for him, a rough couple of weeks, but he absolutely balled out today and uh got a guy with his first catch as well in Jordan Watkins. Pretty cool. When you see this kind of production, Matt, when you see a quarterback spraying the ball around like M did, feeding everyone. Is that to you more on him as a quarterback or in Shanahan as a play designer caller? Yeah, both. Actually, I’d say probably them being on the same page, right? Uh M. Jones being able to carry out the game plan exactly how Kyle Shanahan drew it up. And you know, I know we talked so much about the 49ers wanting to get their running game going in this game, Rod. It really was the passing game was the running game in a lot of ways because of the short passing game. 14 for 14 for M. Jones in the first half. 143 yards. You don’t complete all your pass attempts unless you have uh pre-esigned plays where you’re going to get the ball and they’re nice simple pitch and catch. And let’s give the offensive line some credit as well. With the exception of Spencer Berford allowing a sack to Nunes Roachche and Colton McKivitz having Brian Burns get past him for a sack. I thought the Niners offensive line held up very well in pass protection and obviously they were the tip of the spear when it came to blocking in the run game. We said this was going to be a run game, a productive run game offense for the 49ers. Boy, was it. 39. That’s a magic number. 3940 for the 49ers. 159 on the ground averaging 4.1. The average wasn’t that high. The production though, Matt, was two rushing touchdowns. One by Brock Jr. and the other one by CMC. Yeah, it seemed like there was a an emphasis there at the end to get Christian McCaffrey over the 100yard mark. Granted, it was a 10-point game at the time, but a little bit surprising he was out there on the field, especially the way Brian Robinson was running the rock. Only the the five carries in the game for him, but very productive, including that eight 18 yard touchdown run. Um, I don’t know if that touchdown sealed the deal. I think McCaffy’s touchdown a little bit later did, but um you know there is that possibility as the season goes on as Brian Robinson gets more in tune with the offense to use those guys a little bit more uh together not necessarily on the field at the same time but McAffrey is just so good you kind of sense that uh Bobby Turner Kyle Shanahan they don’t want to take him off the field right you you saw the stat rod um with Marshia Faulk he is the fastest running back to get to 500 500 is thousand,000 within reach for him? Absolutely. If he stays healthy and he plays the entire 17 game season with the way that he’s being used, 100% that’s part of the process. All right, let’s talk about Brian Robinson Jr. We saw his best offensive game as a 49er today back in New York. Uh Rod, a place he knows well. He was decisive, determined. What did you see from B Rob Jr.? Well, the first thing I want to point out is the blocking. You saw Kendrick Bourne there on Brian Burns opening up that hole for Brian Robinson. Dominic Cooney right there. uh Brian Robinson actually getting the job done himself. But what you saw from Robinson is a complimentary piece to Christian McCaffrey. And what have Niner fans wanted for so long in this offense? They wanted somebody to ride with Christian McCaffrey. They wanted some thunder to go along with Christian McCaffry’s lightning. Boy, today I guarantee you Niner fans are going, “Okay, if that’s a taste of what we can get, let’s get some more of that thunder and lightning.” Is that something Matt you think Shanahan should dial more of? More B- Rob and McCaffrey more lightning and thunder to use? Like you say, it’s so difficult to to get into a position where you’re taking McCaffrey off the field. But I I do like that their styles are so different. You know, there’s no double take. You know, whenever there’s a handoff, who’s who’s carrying? Oh, you can tell immediately who’s carrying the the battering ram of Brian Robinson. I I do think though that yeah, uh to your point, Carlos, there are opportunities to get him out there more. And I think maybe he’s earning that based on how he ran today and how successfully he ran today. But but here’s the trick. When McCaffrey is out there, you don’t know if it’s going to be a run or if it’s going to be a pass. When Brian Robinson Jr. is out there, you know it’s going to be a run. So the trick is if we know that defense knows that. So it’s up to the Niners. Well, if they know that’s coming, then they’re going to actually have to make that pay off. So it’s a tricky balance, but you could and yeah, the Giants were the perfect team for the Niners to have this type of game that they did on the ground. All right, quick break here on the show. When we come back on the other side, Kyle Shanahan, his presser from New York. Plus, more reaction, more stats. We’re just getting started. This is 49ers postgame live brought to you by Toyota.
