Despite their best season ever and multiple solid showings at myriad positions.

  1. Perkins might have had a shot with a full season but it felt like Turang and Frelick weren’t quite as good

  2. I know it sucks but we didn’t really get snubbed. Brice Turang actually took a large and inexplicable step back at second this year. And while Sal was still great in RF, Tatis was better.

  3. Who should have won that didn’t? Like the Brewers had good systemic team defense, but they didn’t really have one bona fide standout individual defender (which, in their system, I would argue, doesn’t matter).

  4. I’m convinced the big year-to-year variation in the defensive metrics are a sign we still don’t really have great measures of defensive skill.

  5. Nobody on the Brewers really deserved a gold glove this year. They all regressed quite a bit compared to last year. Ortiz was probably the closest but I wouldn’t have given it to him over Winn or Betts.

  6. My problems are shortstop – Betts was statistically top 3 overall regardless of position and Ian Happ didn’t deserve to win. Very mid year for him.

  7. more fodder for murphy to be manager of the year. no gold gloves, no silver sluggers, no cy youngs, no fireman of the year, yet still the best record in baseball. if he doesn’t win then i’ll write a protest post in all caps.

  8. No snubs of Brewers, according to The Fielding Bible: [https://www.fieldingbible.com/](https://www.fieldingbible.com/)

While it loved the 2024 Brewers (team was No. 4, Turang was No. 3 overall and Frelick was No. 12), the 2025 team fell to No. 11 and Turang was the team’s best defender at just No. 81 overall.

And please don’t say Joey was super valuable for his 2025 defense at shortstop. He was a relatively average 10th best among starting shortstops in 2025, with a negative 2 in defensive runs saved (vs. Gold Glover Mookie Betts’s plus 17).

  9. Hey, so this is a serious question as someone who really only watches the Brewers and not a lot of the MLB otherwise.

Throughout the season there is a lot of talk about Ortiz being a great defender, and his defense making up for his lack of offense.

But, when we get to these awards, he doesn’t even seem to be in the conversation for it.

Is he just not all that good and we’re coping on his defense to defend having such a disappointing hitter in the lineup?

Or, as I do think is the case, is there just a ton of talent at Shortstop, he is actually a good defender, but at the end of the day he still isn’t good enough to be brought up in this conversation?

And, if he were an average hitter, would he be held in higher regard when these discussions come up, or does he also not stack up in regards to defensive metrics which I also never see presented?
