[MLBTR] Lucas Giolito Declines Mutual Option

  1. Thanks for the memories, Gio.

I think if the Sox are willing to spend, it won’t be spent re-signing Giolito.

  2. I thought Giolito was pretty great and well above average, and I think he was a terrific guy and enjoyed it when he started usually, but having watched each and every one of his starts in 2025 I can’t say that I’m really anxious for him to be a long-term part of the team going forward.

My main issue is that watching him pitch I never felt like there was any real consistency to his mechanics – most especially in the follow-through of his delivery after he threw the pitch. Sometimes he would do a big leg kick, sometimes he wouldn’t do any leg kick, sometimes he would be violently falling to the first base side of the mound, sometimes there would be almost no violence in his follow-through. It was *weird*.

His mechanics in general are kinda weird, the way he would short-arm the ball. He just seems like a massive injury risk who is unlikely to develop much consistency, and frankly I think we were lucky to get 2.1 WAR out of him in 2025.

  3. I wanna see what other moves we make before deciding if I’m happy to see him go or not, still wouldn’t mind him as our 3 if they bring in a 2 with more electric stuff

  4. It was a fun year and Gio seems like a great guy but not too sad to see him go. The underlying metrics suggest he’s a strong candidate for regression and the elbow scares me.

  5. Good season but ended sour, I can’t help but feel like he held out on us in the postseason. We had to throw Early to the wolves because of this

  6. One thing that gets overlooked in free agency is the ability to perform at Fenway. A lot of free agents fail. Make sure he’s healthy, try and keep him

  7. No surprise- if healthy he was always going to decline the option. Someone will give him a 3 year deal. I guess it’s a sign his elbow issues at the end of the season aren’t a big deal.

  8. Can’t believe the article talks about Tolle and Early and not Dobbins. I will not stand for this erasure.

  9. I wouldn’t be upset if he stays around but no way he accepts a QO, he could easily get a multi year deal from a team (Red Sox or otherwise).
