The Chicago Blackhawks Prospect Pool SCARES Me.
Today I was doing my weekly NHL prospect pool doom scrolling. Yes, I do that sometimes. But one thing I’ve been noticing is that one prospect pool has been impressing in almost every single way. And that is the Chicago Blackhawks. Not only is the NHL team doing pretty well, the vibes are high and a ton of young guys have stepped onto that roster. The players outside of that team that make up a lot of the future of that roster are also looking impeccable right now. With so many of the top prospects in this Blackhawks pool starting off the season on fire, I want to go through this entire Blackhawks pool to see just how good it’s looking right now and just how good the Chicago future is looking too. So, make sure you guys watch till the end as we take a look at this giant pool and which prospects in Chicago system have been impressing me the most. And of course, hit that subscribe button if you’re new for more hockey prospect content just like this all throughout the year. Right after the 2025 NHL draft, I made a prospect pool ranking going through every single team and I had the Chicago Blackhawks ranked fairly high, third place right behind the Montreal Canadians and the San Jose Sharks. But with both the Sharks and Havs having some pretty major graduations in the Sharks case, players like Michael Misa, Sam Dickinson in Montreal, a major one in Ivon Debov going on to the NHL full-time. Chicago, I think, is now pretty clearly the number one prospect pool in the league. Let’s start out today by talking about the guys in the 2025 NHL draft. Chicago’s most recent draft selection where they had three first round picks and all three of them are looking interesting in their own ways. Anton Fredell, who of course they selected third overall in the last class, is something that I was a pretty big fan of, maybe not at third overall, but I really like the translatability. He might not be the biggest player in the world, but he uses every single inch to his advantage. He is somebody that is so strong on his skates. His body positioning is incredible, and the way he’s able to protect the puck and just bully his way through the neutral zone is incredibly translatable. You can see so far as well through 17 SHL games, eight goals, four assists for 12 points. Considering Frenell is fourth in team scoring and hasn’t really been a defensive liability in my mind, it’s strange that the ice time has been so inconsistent for him considering he’s clearly one of their best players. But that’s the top leagues in European hockey for you. They’re not here for development, they’re here to win. But I think Frenell still has done a lot to help that. His projection hasn’t clearly changed for me. I still see him being a really good complimentary firstline wing. Something that can do a lot of great things for you. Similar to a Slavoski in terms of the potential and the role I see him fitting at, but I think that’s a great fit for Chicago. They needed guys, especially in the left wing, just bang and crash. Make the simple play, but have a good layer of skill on top of that. And especially for guys like Baddard for the Nazars, Frenell’s consistent body of work is going to be incredibly important. That leads me on to the later first round pick by the Blackhawks in Vaklov Nestrasil who is also looking fantastic to start things out with something that I loved back in his draft year at 6’6 190 lbs. He just is wanting to dangle you out of your jock straps no matter what. He doesn’t play entirely big but uses that body well and with how gifted this guy is with a puck on his stick, it’s it’s genuinely incredible to see. And so far in the end for UMass, he has gotten off to a scorching start. Seven goals, 11 points through nine. Him and Jack Musa have been leading the charge for UMass’s offense for the most part. But what’s impressed me the most with Necil has been the adaptability in his game. Last year he was a bit one-dimensional, really just leading with that skill and hoping it all came together and it did sometimes. But for UMass this year, he’s using his body way more. He’s actually taking charge in the offense way more too and being a bit more adaptable when it comes to his teammates and and seeing the vision and the plays happening on the ice. Plus, he’s getting to the net now. He’s getting deflection goals, too, which is what I want to see out of him to become a bit more translatable to the NHL. The skill set was there, but now he’s starting to round it all out, and as a freshman, that’s a great development. You also have the Blackhawks other firstrounder in Mason West, who, yes, hasn’t played a game so far this year, but also, he’s balling out so much right now in Minnesota high school football that the Blackhawks might have their QB of the future. So, I think it works out okay for them. All I got to say is if you got the QB position locked up, you’re good for the long term. And uh seems like the Blackhawks have their guy. You also have forwards like Nathan Beam playing pretty well so far in the WHL. But one shout out I wanted to give was to Ilia Canarski, who was a seventh round pick for them last year, who’s looking pretty good. I’m a huge fan of drafting Russian goalies whenever possible, but especially in the late rounds. They got him 194th overall, 6’3″, 192 pounds. He was an overager playing mostly in the NHL last year, but so far through 12 games in the VHL has a 939 save percentage. Yeah, maybe you’d want to see him in the KHL to really prove himself, but hey, as a 20-year-old goalender, I think those are pretty great numbers already. And when in doubt, draft a rushing goalie. Onto the 2024 draft for the Blackhawks. This one isn’t as sunshine and roses. But you also have Lev playing pretty well in the NHL already. So, I think that’s the development the Blackhawks will take. Outside of that, I would say one of the Blackhawks top prospects is maybe disappointing the most so far this year is Sasha Boy. somebody that had a really good start with Nodak last season, but then take a took a big risk, went to the transfer portal and went to Boston University. And so far, I think it’s been fine, but maybe not as impactful as you’d want. So far, just one goal and five points through six games. I’m not willing to raise the alarm bells yet, mostly because Bvar’s game really is fueled by his finishing ability, and if the teammate fit isn’t quite there, then it’s going to take some adjusting. But still, I think you’d want a bit more considering where they drafted him and especially BEu’s options around him. but maybe it might not be the greatest fit to start things out. Plus, he was a bit banged up, too. So, there’s some things going against him so far. Going from 18th to 27th overall, though, I want to give a shout out to Merrick Vanaker, who was somebody that I liked a lot in his draft year for the simple established game he provided, but also having a pretty great upside, especially on the rush. He’s someone that so far for Brford has gone up to an electric start, especially with that goal scoring so far in 13 games, 14 goals, seven assists for 21 points. It seems like the Brford to Chicago pipeline is working pretty well. Nick Lardis and his goalc scoring heroics now on to the AHL who we will talk about later. Now Merrick Vaner who was tied first in OHL scoring. Now sure Bransford is a bit of a wagon but I would argue Vaker is a major reason why. The big questions I have of Racher back in his draft year was if we would see that physical play improve the consistency in his effort level because when he is at his best he can be a dynamic player again especially off the rush. But I think we have seen Vaker take some strides in that and become even more effective, especially along the wall. So, he’s somebody that I am really interested to see where his long-term fit goes because I could easily see him becoming a great complimentary middle six piece and especially as a late first round pick. I think that’s easily worth it. But now, let’s talk about the Blackhawks legendary 2023 NHL draft, which on top of Connor Bdard is looking to have a few really interesting gems coming out of it. The Blackhawks of course also got a 19th overall all over Moore. Now, let’s talk about the duo that Oliver Moore and Nick Lardis have been so far this season because it’s been one of the most dynamic duos across all of the prospect landscape this season. Both of them have been prolific. And I’m going to start with Moore here because I think he’s been the most impressive of the two. He should be since he was a top 20 pick, but I think the scoring, the production has always kind of been my worry with Moore. I’ve never questioned the speed and the intensity and the skill set that Moore can have. It was always just about getting past that physicality, becoming more of a force every single shift. And I think we’ve seen that in the AHL so far. Granted, I think he’s had a great fit with the two players they’ve been playing with, but so far through nine games, six goals, four points in 10 games, having a stellar start to his AHL career. He was somebody that I thought was trending towards an NHL spot. When that didn’t end up happening, it seemed like Moore got the kick in the butt that he maybe needed mentally, and he has been running away with it. really running away with the opportunity in the AHL with the ice time, but just every single chance he gets, he’s putting in that work. He’s using that skill in more smart ways. That was always my question. Where are we going to see the details and the adaptability and more start to come once he enter the pros? And I think so far he has answered that brilliantly. He has just been a magnificent player to watch in Rockford. So entertaining, so fun. But again, it’s that balance that Moore is starting to achieve that makes me the most excited. As we know, you can have all the skill, you can have all the talent in the world, but if it’s not applied in the right ways, then you’re never going to go too far. I think in a lot of times, especially in Minnesota, it was a bit frustrating seeing him try to force things. But I think now the game is starting to become a lot more free for him and a lot more natural, and I think that’s opened up a lot of opportunities for. But for a playmaker like Moore, it helps a ton to have a sniper like Nick Lardis. And even though I’m a little more optimistic about Moore’s long-term NHL projectability, I think Nick Lordis needs to be talked about because this guy just continues to score and score no matter the league and no matter the level. As a former third rounder, 67th overall, I will hear no comments about that. Okay, he has, I think, done fantastically since his draft year. I I think he was always a really interesting player in his draft year, but you’ve seen the application of that goal scoring become a bit more consistent. I mean the OHL scoring is is there pretty evident to see 29 goals in 37 games in 2024. Then this last year 17 points, 71 goals in 65 games. And then you can see now the transition onto Rockford. And he’s pretty much immediately a great scoreer in the AHL. Five goals, eight assists, 13 points, and nine AHL games. And among the league leaders in points already in the AHL as a 20-year-old. And I’m going to be honest, I’m a bit shocked. Not that Nick Lardis is scoring because I think that was always going to happen, but to this magnitude while also kind of like Moore, I think being able to show a lot more details, a lot more consistency in his defensive work ethic, and that’s allowed Rockford to play him and be comfortable playing him a lot more than they otherwise would have. Now, if Moore has gotten a lot more detailed in his game, I would say Lardis’ improvement this year has just been the speed of his game in general. In the OHL, you’re going to have a lot more time to just stand there and shoot the puck. And when Lardris has the opportunity to shoot the puck, it’s usually a goal. But in the AHL, those opportunities are far fewer to come across, but I think LR has done a great job in getting more involved in the play. Maybe not as much as I’d want, at least physically yet. But I think considering his size, he’s doing exactly what he needs to to be a good facilitator on his line and ultimately be the finisher that he needs to be. Lardis has kind of applied that speed in his goal scoring even more to his playmaking game, allowing that dual threat offense to shine even more. But if Lawrence can continue to gain muscle, become even more deceptive in his play, then I think you could have a pretty interesting power play player, especially here, but somebody just like Moore that I think fits especially well on that middle six, potentially even a second line someday. It’ll be hard because of the option Chicago has coming up in the left wing. I’m not quite sure if Lard is going to get those top six opportunities. So, that might make it a bit hard for him to gain that coach’s trust. But, at the end of the day, I think he could be a really interesting role player here for the Blackhawks. Maybe not your greatest defensive player or anything, but when he gets the puck, watch out. Now, one that also is pretty scary on the shorter side of things in Roman Canerov going into the KHL. Something that also was a 2023 draft pick as a second rounder and to me is easily one of Chicago’s most underrated prospects. Canerv is somebody that has just been cooking in Russia over the last couple years. So, it’s not really much of a surprise, but so far this season is a point per game with 13 goals in 21 points through 21 games after having 38 points in 47 games the year before. We talked about deception in Nick Lardis’ game, but I think deception is the name of the game for Roman Canerov. He is out there to make every single goalie look as silly as humanly possible, and he’s done that pretty effectively. Not only is his shot absolutely magnificent, but I just love how much of a goal scorer Canerov is. He gets to the net, he gets to these areas, he’s shifty, he’s crafty around physical pressure. And even though I’m not quite sure how much that translates long term, especially as the going gets even tougher, I think Cancer right now is just succeeding so well at finding that extra little bit of space and making you pay for it. Kind of like Larus, I do have some concerns over the actual physical engagement. He’s pretty good at protecting the puck and getting to the net, but when it comes to the play off the puck, that’s where I want to see him improve. But with how many great forwards Chicago has coming up, they can afford to be a bit patient here with cancer and give him maybe another season or two in the KHL to really simmer and once he comes over, could be a heck of a player here. The last ones I wanted to talk about here were two different goalenders here for the Blackhawks. We already talked about one earlier, but I wanted to talk about Adam Gion and Drew Kso on top of Spencer Knight looking incredible to start out this season for the Blackhawks. You have two goenders here that have gotten off to magnificent starts as well. None more important though than Adam Gion because he has been an interesting one. Drafted 35th overall by the Blackhawks in 2023 has kind of struggled in a couple of categories. You see in the USL not the greatest numbers in his first NCAA season. Not really getting off to the greatest start with Minnesota DO though I’d argue that team in general was just kind of weird. You can see though so far this season he has been great through 10 games has a 917 save percentage a 1.85 85 goals against average. And I think Minnesota DUP has improved pretty substantially. But I think a good part of that is Gion’s play. Most of this though, I think just comes to the confidence and the consistency because Gion is one of those high high potential goalenders that seems like he’s either going to get a shut out or let in four goals in a game. And it feels like he’s tightened that up just a little bit. He’s always been very athletic and again has those high-end plays. I just have always kind of been curious about the consistency in that especially when it comes to the traffic around him. How much is he going to be able to adapt with his size but I think so far this season he has been just magnificent for Minnesota stealing quite a few games here and there and being a big reason why they’ve been such a surprising team in college hockey this year. Also a shout out to a longtime Blackhawks prospect now and Drew Kesso who was a second round pick back in 2020. He has been cooking in the AHL for a while now, but this season to start out has a 920 save percentage through seven games and it’s starting to look really really solid. I think Kso is more of a backup than a starter long term. But hey, with Kesso, Guyan also the rushing goalie in the system on top of Spencer not looking good. And the goalending department is really starting to line up here for the Blackhawks, which is such a fantastic development because a couple years ago it was looking pretty bleak. Now, if I didn’t talk about a guy here, it’s probably because I consider them a graduated prospect. Korchinsky is kind of in the middle. I don’t really know what to consider him, but I think he’s been pretty good in the AHL so far this year. But on top of the guys that you have coming up, of course, in Bedard and Nazar and Levinov and Renzel already doing pretty well in the NHL now. Spencer, of course, looking good. Seems like this next wave of Blackhawks prospects is going to make that team even scarier. But that is my detailed look inside the Chicago Blackhawks prospect pool and just how interesting it’s looking from just so many different positions, so many different spots. Damn this Prospect Pool really is scary
Im not even a habs fan, but the Habs does have the best prospect pool in the entire NHL.
Watch out because if these rookies do come as advertised the Blackhawks are gonna be winning some playoff games in the near future
I think outside the big names. Vaclav Nestrasil will be a major piece down the road.
Loving the daily videos👍
Boisvert is injured.
This team might give the stars problems in sorry grav
Talk about Lardis’ speed too. Correct me if I’m wrong but I never thought he was that fast, but he just looks faster than everyone else when he gets goin.
Would be good to mention Kantserov is leading the entire KHL in goals!
Gajan has an ankle injury last season.
The biggest miss so far in the Davidson regime has been Korchinski and he’s still 21 being very productive at the AHL level
Really hoping Moore plays well for us!
I know you hate it, but thank you for doing this vid:) love your energy you bring to every video!
