RED WINGS & OILERS TRADE UPDATE: ELLIOTTE FRIEDMAN SPEAKS ON TROY STECHER + ERIK GUSTAFSSON NEWS
Well, well, well. Today we are diving into the latest in Detroit Red Wings defenseman trade talks as well as highlighting another defenseman that actually used to be a Detroit Red Wing as well. And I actually had to do a double take. I was like, “Huh, wait a minute. That guy, huh? He did play for the Detroit Red Wings, didn’t he?” Yeah, we’ll get to him later. He’s an amazing Pakoku guest as well. He’s played on half the league it seems like. But today we are diving on to the Red Wings blue line once more because this guy Eric Gustoson happens to actually not be on that Detroit Red Wings blue line. Instead, he’s in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins and he currently has himself six points in six games. He’s on pace for 70 points this year. I’d say that’s pretty good. Now, for Gustoson, things were a little bit wishy-washy this season because he ended up not making the regular Detroit Red Wings team, the team in which he had scored 18 points with last season. Now, the Red Wings are doing fine. They ended up winning again yesterday against the San Jose Sharks in a shootout. So, they’re getting dubs, they’re producing, they’re getting offense. Eric Gustiffson, sorry, your services are not necessarily all too valued within the organization at the moment, but that does not mean there cannot be movement to be had. Because about a week ago, week ago, we had ourselves this article published by Kevin Allen on Detroit Hockey Now talking about why the Red Wings may not actually trade Eric Gustoson. Now, this of course kind of contradicts a lot of the video commentaries that we’ve made earlier in the month. By the month, I mean October, saying, “Hey, Gustoson Hall, maybe Onitenburg, these guys could potentially be on the trade block. Elliot Friedman had a little bit of a conversation about that, too. Extra defenseman in Detroit. These guys could be on the market. But Kevin Allen is going out there and putting some cold water on the Gustoson trade discussion. Let’s go out there and read this. So, the article talks about Freriedman who has reported that the Wings are looking to move Gusson, who is currently playing with the Griffins, but there are reasons that may not happen. We are hearing that teams don’t want to give up anything except a lower round draft pick to get Gustoson. If that’s true, the Wings could decide to keep him in Grand Rapids to see what happens. GMCVY only has seven defenseman currently on the Red Wings roster and it seems likely they’ll suffer an injury at some point. Gustoson has 515 games of NHL experience. Plus, he’s in the final season of his contract making 2 mil. That’s less than the average NHL salary. Also, the Red Wings have almost 12 million in cap space. There’s no immediate need to create more space. The only good argument for trading Gustoson immediately is to give him a chance to get back in the NHL. Meanwhile, Villiam Valinder and Anti Toisto are currently the only healthy draft picks playing defense in Grand Rapids. Shyuam is still on the IR. Neither Gustoson or Hall are blocking anyone at the moment. In fact, Hall and Gustoson have helped the Griffins start 5-0. At the NHL level, or AHL level, excuse me, where players have more time to make a play, their abilities pay off. There’s an argument that could be made to keep Gustoson or see what develops and other teams have injuries. Maybe the offers will improve slightly if that happens. Or we might see either or both of them again in Detroit. So short and sweet Sabrina Carpenter article over here just talking about how some teams aren’t necessarily willing to give much for Eric Gossip, which is fine. I mean, the guy passed through waiverss for free and nobody claimed him. Nobody wanted him for anything on the committed side. So maybe things open themselves up a little bit more now that he’s gone through waiverss. But he’s been very productive. It’s not like he’s holding anybody back in Grand Rapids. It’s kind of a perfect situation right here because Stevie Y and the Wings have these two veteran guys available whenever they need them just in case, goodness forbid, somebody on the blue line in Detroit gets hurt. For now though, the update on Gustoson seems like there might not be a trade happening soon since the price is quite small. However, Gus is not the only defenseman that we’re talking about in this video. Oh, no, no, no. We’re talking about former Detroit Red Wings defenseman as well, Troy Stcher. Because there was a segment on Saturday headlines, so two days ago on the Hockey Night in Canada broadcast where one Elliot Freriedman went out there and spoke out about the Edmonton Oilers 31-year-old defenseman. Take a look at this right here. Freriedman spoke about the Troy Ster rumors. I’ve heard there was some interest and I think the Oilers are trying to find him a soft landing. he said on Saturday headlines on November 1st. Does he make saves? I don’t think so. Okay. I don’t know what that even means, but there actually was an extended quote. This is the full text from Oilersnation.com. They went out there and posted this in their website. The Edmonton Oilers got a lot of players coming back from injury. Their Zack Heyman can come back. Yanmar can come back. Regular can come back. One of the names that’s definitely going to be around there is Troy Stcher. He’s one of the extra D and they have a couple of extra right now. Now, it doesn’t necessarily have to be Stetcher. I think the Oilers have considered a bunch of things, but he is definitely one of the folks that’s being considered. I’ve heard there’s some interest and I think the Oilers are trying to find him a soft landing. So, that’s more of the extended quote there. Essentially, Freriedman is saying that a bunch of Oilers are coming back from injury, which of course is good, but it’s not perfect for guys that are thrusted into the lineup to be relief players. Troy Stetcher has already not played in seven games this season. He’s got six games played total, zero points. And uh yeah, just as you can see, this guy is a total Wordle King. Not Wordle, Pucku, excuse me. Vancouver, Detroit, LA, Arizona, Calgary, Arizona, Edmonton, and then whatever other team he’s going to be on. He’s making a reasonable amount of money, $787,000, till the end of this season. There was a time where he was a $2 million guy, but those years are far and gone between. And now Troy Stcher as a depth defenseman who works hard, who’s not the biggest, he’s only 5’10, 185, right-handed guy, is potentially going to be fodder for some other NHL team that needs a little bit of experience and needs a little bit more bodies. Ster, I’m going to say he’s got experience. I mean, he had that 17game run with the Vancouver Conucks in the playoffs in the bubble. He was super good. Scored a super clutch goal against St. Louis. He then had four points in four games against the Kings, which is outstanding. And then he played for the Oilers last year in eight games when they went to the Stanley Cup finals. So, he does have some form of experience despite not strictly having all the games played. He’s been around and he’s been around champions, he’s been around good players, he’s been around legends, and there’s a lot of experience there. He’s quick, he is small, and he is able to really hammer home with his effort. I’ve always appreciated Troy Stetcher and not just because he’s from the town that I live in right now, but this guy seems like he is available on the trade market. It all depends on which team is going to buy it because they want a right-handed defenseman who can skate. Troy Stetcher is a perfect candidate, man. And I’ll really vouch for him as long as I am alive. So, with that in mind, I want you to let me know your thoughts in the comments section below. How do you feel firstly about the latest on Eric Gustoson? price is really low, so it doesn’t really seem like Steve Eisermanman has it in his best interest to trade him for the sake of trading him. Do you really want to get a seventh round pick, or could you have him just chilling in Grand Rapids potentially as relief in Detroit if somebody gets injured? And I also want you to let me know your thoughts as to Troy Ster and his availability on the trademark right now in Edmonton. With guys coming back, it makes his job kind of expendable. But there are other jobs in the NHL to be had, especially if you are a righthanded defenseman. You can let me know your thoughts as to which teams you think are the most appropriate for Troy Ster to head over to. Comments help out with the algorithm, so I’d really appreciate it if you got involved there. Article is going to be linked in the description as well. both of these articles.
