Saints Name Tyler Shough Starting QB vs. LA Rams | Why It’s RIGHT DECISION For New Orleans

[Music] Well, this was absolutely inevitable. Tyler Shuck has been named the starting quarterback for the New Orleans Saints for this Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams. It was reported early Tuesday, I believe Ian Rapaore had it first. The New Orleans Saints have now made it official. It’s Tuesday, so it’s an off day in the NFL, but word started to spread. Uh, Rapaore had it first that both Tyler Shuck and Spencer Ratler had been informed and now the Saints have put it out there via social media post. Uh, it’s interesting because if you go back um through this off season, of course throughout fall camp or training camp with Moore and Rattler, there was a quarterback battle. Rattler ended up getting the nod. And Kellen Moore, you know, was was asked back in late August um about the chances of both playing there week one against Arizona. This is what he said back in August. I I don’t I don’t see that likely. Um you I think it’s important to someone’s going to be our starter and we’re going to rally behind that guy and he’s going to go lead our team. So they played one guy, Spencer Rattler. Uh, yep. Handful of days later, he was asked again about the possible quarterback shuffle. This was this was August the 26th, so this is about two weeks before the opener. That’s the important thing, guys. We’re not getting into this QB debate throughout this season. Uh, Spence, our starting quarterback. Tyler’s going to keep developing. Um, you know, quarterbacks, you need a couple quarterbacks in seasons. These are long NFL seasons. And so, u, you know, I think we do value that we have depth there and we’ll have to navigate, uh, the rest of it as we go. But, uh, you know, we’re really excited about Spence. He’s going to do an awesome job for us. To his credit, to his credit, he’s not wrong. They have been committed to this point to one guy, Spencer Rattler. And despite the fact that he started 0 and 10 in his career as a starter, and this New Orleans Saints team this year is 1 and7, they’ve stuck with one guy until Sunday. Now, what I’m going to say here is not new. It’s the thing I’ve been saying since they drafted Spencer Rattler and that I’ve said all season long. I’m sorry. It’s the thing I’ve been saying since they drafted Tyler Shuck. And I’ve been saying all season long. I do not believe the sole reason the New Orleans Saints are 1-7 is because Spencer Rattler has played poorly. I don’t think that he has played at times very clean, efficient football. Now, the past two weeks, turnovers have been a problem. You turn the ball over four times in a loss, that’s a problem. You turn the ball over twice in the first half, including a deflected pick six and a fumble when you’re driving early in the game, that’s a problem because now you’re contributing to the losses. But that has not been the case for Rattler throughout. It has been the past couple of weeks. But I do not believe the Saints are 1-7 because Spencer Rattler has played poorly. They’re one and seven because they stink. They are a talentless roster right now. They are arguably the worst roster in the NFL. Rookie head coach, no experience at quarterback, you’re void of talent, aging veterans with with expensive contracts. It’s all the reasons that we’ve talked about for years here about how Mickey Lumis has driven this organization into the ground because he has screwed up contracts and screwed up drafts and screwed up hires and they stink. That’s why they’re one and seven. Not because of Spencer Rattler. Okay. Also true Spencer Rattler has not elevated this team. You had an opportunity to win at home against Arizona. Now, I don’t know that I would that we are all going to point to the end of the game with Jawan Johnson dropping that ball in the end zone or failing to make a contested catch in the end zone. That would have tied the game or giving you a chance to go for two. Could Rattler made other plays during the game at some point? Probably. A week later against San Francisco, you lose at home by five, 26-21. Bottom line is you’ve had some opportunities. Rattler is not elevating you and you’re not very good offensively. You’re 22nd in the NFL in passing. You’re 28th in the NFL in rushing. You’re 29th in the NFL in scoring. You’re averaging 16 points per game. Let me say that again slowly. You are averaging 16 points per game. You are not good. And I get it. You got a young offensive line at tackle. You got a bad offensive line in the interior. You’re missing your starting center as your best line. You do not have dynamic weapons on the outside. Chris Ave grabbed the throat again this weekend. When Tyler Shuck went into the game, he got him intercepted because he bobbled a ball right up in the air. had ripped away by Antoine Winfield cuz Chris Ave is not a is not a legit number one. He’s a at best a two, probably a three in the NFL. Rashid Shied fumbled on Sunday. U you you do not have dynamic playmakers on this offense. Alvin Chimera is old. So it’s not all on Rattler, but you right now the New Orleans Saints have the best odds to finish with the worst record in the NFL. Jets won this weekend. You have the best odds to finish with the worst record, meaning you’d have the number one pick. You are going to have a chance in April to draft the best quarterback in this class. I don’t know who that is. We can have that conversation months from now. You’re going to have the opportunity. And if it’s not one and you pick two or three or four, you’re going to be picking somewhere in the top five with an opportunity to draft your franchise quarterback. You have got to know. I’m g say this again. It’s the same thing I’ve said for weeks. You have got to know what you have in Tyler Shuck. You use the 40th pick on him. You spent all of the evaluation period, senior bowl, combine, pro days, private workouts, evaluating last year’s quarterback draft class, and use the 40th overall pick on Tyler Shuck. You have got to find out if you have something there you feel like you can build around. I do not expect Tyler Shuck to win the game Sunday in Los Angeles. I think the Saints will lose to the Rams. I don’t know if Tyler Shuck will win a single game as the starting quarterback of the Saints for the remainder of the season. Just like I’m not pinning all the losses on Rattler. And like I’ve said consistently since the offseason, I am not judging this team by wins and losses. They are not good enough, talented enough, deep enough of a roster to win games consistently in the National Football League. They are a bad football team. Anybody with two eyes could see this. Stevie Wonder could see it. Sorry. Hit the rim shot. Give me one. Just I deserve it. It’s been a long 48 hours. I deserve it. Anyway, bottom line is you have got to give Tyler Shuck the opportunity, the same opportunity that Spencer Rattler has had from the last year and through eight games this year. You gave him half the season. Your team stinks. He’s turning the ball over the past couple of weeks. You’re not getting better. I get it. I’m not saying you throw dirt on Spencer Rattler’s career after eight starts this season, but he’s had his opportunity. He’s not elevating your offense. You have got to find out if you think there are things there with Tyler Shuck that you can build upon because you’re going to have an opportunity in April to draft whoever it may be. Fernando Mendoza, Lenor Sers, I I don’t know. I don’t know who it’s going to be. Well, again, we’ll figure that out at a later date. whoever’s at the top of the draft. But the question you’re going to have to answer in April is, are you using that top five pick on your franchise quarterback or are you using that on a cornerstone franchise piece, a rush end, the best receiver in the draft, a lock down corner, whomever it may be? Are you using that pick on that player that’s going to make you better to complement your young quarterback? Well, you can’t figure that out in practice until you throw him out there in the deep end on NFL Sundays to see how he reacts. You can’t figure it out. This is 100% the right decision. And it is not a knock on Spencer Rattler. Rattler is what he is. He’s a guy that is a talented player, does some things well, but the reality is he’s a fifth round pick. And if you’re a fifth round pick, you’re going to have to do something extraordinary to become a team’s franchise quarterback. He has not done that. You have invested the 40th overall pick in a quarterback. You are going to give him an opportunity. That’s the bottom line. You are going to give him an opportunity to see if he can live up to that investment. Make good on that investment. And that starts on Sunday. Again, I am not going to pick the Saints to beat the Rams. I I don’t know that I’m going to pick them to win another game. They got some opportunities to play the Jets at home, play the Dolphins at home. You got some opportunities, but I’m not expecting this to be great, but we got to see what it looks like. So you can have as much information as possible when you go into the draft process in April to know if you are picking a quarterback or if you’re picking someone else to complement your young quarterback. And that starts on Sunday. It’s 100% the right decision to start Tyler Shuck. And he should start for the remainder of the season. Give him a nine-game sample as your starter to see how it looks and you’ll gather all that information and you’ll make a decision at the end of this season. But it starts on Sunday against the Rams. Matt Moscona breaks down the New Orleans Saints’ quarterback change as Tyler Shough is officially named the starter against the Los Angeles Rams. After Spencer Rattler’s 1–7 start, the Saints are shifting gears — but is this a sign of hope or just another symptom of a broken roster? Matt explains why the move was inevitable, how much of the Saints’ struggles fall on Rattler, and what this decision says about Kellen Moore’s confidence in his offense. He dives into why New Orleans is where it is right now — a team with an aging roster, limited talent, and a rookie head coach — and how the organization must use the rest of the season to find out if Shough can be the quarterback to build around. With the Saints projected to have a top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, this decision could determine whether the team drafts another quarterback or invests in a cornerstone piece elsewhere. Can Tyler Shough prove he’s the guy for the future, or is this just the beginning of a full rebuild in New Orleans?

  1. I hope Spencer rattler leaves
Go to Arizona, where you have fire power that wants to do something

The fire power we have in New Orleans. They don’t wanna do nothing.

  2. Tyler Shough came in with 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. With 8 minutes left in the game, he had just 28 yards. He finished with 128. That means he moved the ball 100 yards in 8 minutes—and that’s not even counting the dropped passes.

Meanwhile, Rattler had 136 yards in nearly 3.5 quarters. Shough nearly matched that in less than half the time. He also got us into the red zone for the first time all game.

It’s early, but Shough already looks better. It won’t save the season, but it might just give us someone to build around.

  3. It amazes me that our o-line isn’t any better than it is since we have so many 1st round picks on it. Nonetheless, I attribute our horrible offense to being undisciplined for one. Too many penalties, too many dropped passes, too many choked opportunities. Rattler has been decent. Definitely not all on him, but like you said, he isn’t elevating the team either. Until we find some consistency with discipline and capitalizing on the opportunities we’re given, it won’t matter much who’s at QB. I’ve seen way too many dropped easy passes, for example, by guys who should not drop those. I think it’s partly a mental thing as this team adjusts to the new coach/system. Right now, what we’ve got isn’t working. Hopefully added talent will help, but there is definitely more to it than that, I’m afraid.

  4. I support the QB change 100%, but the chances are slim to none that the Saints beat the Rams. Shough just needs to look ok in his first start against a top-5 Rams team. If he plays like he did against the Bucs plus a week of building a tiny bit of chemistry with his receivers, he'll be just fine. If he drives the offense beyond Rattler's 19-point ceiling, that would be icing on the cake. If the Saints win by some miracle, he'd be crowned the new patron saint of the City of New Orleans overnight. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. His focus for this weekend is just to avoid looking like an inexperienced fool.

  5. Weirdly enough if Shough does just as well as rattler, then Rattler has a better chance at staying with the team as the backup. He’s younger on a cheaper 5th round deal.

  6. Should be a fun watch, Tyler's advantage over Rattler is he's mentally fresh and his deep ball accuracy. How he reacts to constant pressure overtime through the course of the season will be tested now with Mccoy is out.

  7. Simple to me. Y’all got your guy so have him start some. Me personally I’m not giving him any slack. Idgad if he’s a rookie. So be it. He’s the oldest and most expensive qb on this current roster. Im holding him to the exact same standard Spence has been held to and should be held too. Either way I hope bro plays well. I’m a saints fan and hate our team looking like this man

  8. We also have to look at Kellen Moore as head coach, is he that guy. We give him credit for the Eagles winning the Superbowl, when the Eagles were a Superbowl team before Kellen Moore got there, and they are not doing bad this season without him. As far as Tyler Shough he was not a second round caliber QB. Just like Spencer Rattler was expected to win games, as the second round draft pick, with a fully guaranteed rookie contract, I also expect Tyler Shough to win games. If all fails, we should consider our options in the 2026 draft, but then again is the problem really the QBs. Time will tell. Kellen Moore has 3–4 seasons to turn things around, but who knows, Mickey Loomis was going to keep Dennis Allen around.

  9. Rattler was middle of the pack. About the 15th best QB in ratings but they didn’t score 20 points other than when the defense got 5 turnovers against the giants. And the last 3 games he was 0-3, 2 td’s, 4int’s and 2 fumbles. If he can’t win games, and he’s the reason we lose some games, it only makes sense to see what Shough can do so they can start prepping for next year

  10. I believe in shough his passes are crisp on target allowing receivers to extend the play. He’s tall has an arm. He can throw 20yrds down the field. I feel a lot more optimistic with shough then rattler

  11. I predict this tiem next year everyone will be screaming for a new OC. What's happened to our run game? It's not like we were that far behind against the Bucs in the first half but we didn't run the ball at all really. How many touches did our RBs have in the game? where is the screen pass? where is the wheel route down the sideline for the RB? I've never been a fan of KM as an OC and damned sure not a fan of his play calling and especially not a fan of him as a HC. Hope I'm worng

  12. The QB is not the problem. The bland offense and inconsistent defense are the issue. That is a matter of coaching. Kellen Moore was not that good at Dallas and only 1 year with the Eagles, who were already SB bound, is not a barometer of what he can build. I hated the choice from the beginning both he and Brandon Staley.

  13. We need play makers. We have no deep threat reciever like Michael Thomas. Tight End cant caught and when he does he fumble. Qb always running for their life. RB's have over 15 carries and we only get 50 yards rushing. Blake Grupe is not reliable hes a hit or miss. Defense is old. We have some much dead money we cant get nobody good. We draft linemen that gets hurt in training camp. We are 1-7 because everyone from Gayle Benson to Pete Warner sucks. Mickey Loomis is driving the saints and the pelicans into the ground.

  14. Playing QB roulette with the draft is idiotic. Besides the fact every QB in this class is buns, you have TWO YOUNG QB's you can DEVELOPE. It pays nothing to keep drafting a QB when you can start building a talented supporting class around what you have. When you give these young QB's you have everything they need and they still can't lead the team to success THEN you toy with a new QB. a half of a season isn't fair to evaluate Shough.

  15. I personally don't care who starts but when you say you've seen enough of rattler to know he's not it while also saying we have the worse roster in the league it doesn't make sense to me. Brock purdy on this team would like his draft position because again we suck as a team. shough doesn't "elevate this offense" either it isn't because he bad or not good its because again this team is terrible and if your team is terrible it doesn't matter who the QB is.

  16. They aint gonna pick a QB in the top 5…. Don't fool yourself… They are gonna pick another olineman or dlineman and draft another QB in a later round. They are probably thinking they can get Nussmeier in the 4th or 5th round cause daddy wants his son to come play for him…
