Trio of SF Giants players elect free agency to begin the offseason
November 3, 2025
Only surprise for me of the three is Verlander, but this pretty well cements his status as a hired hand. I’d have thought the Giants would lock him in before he went to the open market, but here we are.

Cool pay Ranger Suarez instead
Flores, Verlander, Dom Smith
Of the three, only Verlander might come back, IMO. Flores, god bless him, is the oldest 33 year old on the planet, and BDS isn’t going to be passing up Devers and Eldridge for a roster spot.
Hate to say it, but maybe it’s time to move on.
I’ll miss all that BDSM, but with Devers and Eldridge there’s just no place for him.
Everybody knows their contracts were up at the end of the season. Smith and Flores will be hunting for new ball clubs, Verlander can choose just about any team that wants him at this point in his career. If the team pursues Scherzer, it’s very likely Verlander will be go elsewhere as they’ve not gotten along in the past.
Can’t exactly blame Verlander if he decides not to come back. Dude is desperate for 300 wins and wants to go to a team that can score runs.
Verlander, Dom Smith, and Flores are the three mentioned here.
Stupid click bait
I don’t think they’re allowed to sign him to a new contract or extend him until five days after the World Series, only exercise or decline an option. Still very possible he comes back, though I think I’d give odds that Scherzer is the old man future HOF’er we get for ‘26
I’ll miss Flores. Got his signature at 2020 Spring Training
Gonna miss Wilmer
I wish JV the best. He pitched great at the later part of the season. I kinda wanted to keep Big Dom but i get that we have people ahead in the depth chart. Flores is beloved by fans but its time to part. Im not mad at any of them leaving, but lets get three better players to take their spots.

Exactly why I was yelling from the rooftop to trade Flores and Verlander at the trade deadline.
I liked Verlander here but if the Giants were to spend on younger pitching that wouldn’t be awful.
Flores is my favorite Giant of the last 5+ years so gonna toast him tonight and hope somehow he ends up back with us
There shouldn’t be any surprises. Their contracts are up, therefore they’re automatically free agents.
Doesn’t prevent Verlander from re-signing during the offseason. Considering how volatile the free agent market can be for someone of his age, it makes sense for both parties to see how free agency shakes out rather than sign an extension early in the offseason. Verlander might as well see what offers are out there, and the Giants have bigger fish to fry (a mid-rotation starter to slot alongside Ray, a few high quality bullpen arms, and maybe a bat) before circling back to fifth-starter guys like Verlander.
Flores and Smith are both gone. Verlander has a slight chance of coming back but he probably wants to go to a guaranteed playoff team.
Didn’t Eldridge just get brought up from AAA? I’m not well versed in contract logistics, etc., what am I missing here?
At first. I’m like only 1 spot left?
But, then I realized there are a lot of possible changes: Meckler, Luciano / Matos, Brubaker, Gage, Lucchesi, Bivens?, Seymour?, Teng? Winn.
Love some BDSM, but we have two lefty power 1Bs already so with the year he had he really deserves to find someone who can get him a starter role
I don’t know why this is a surprise? All of these were pretty much on their last year
Surprise? Everyone knew Verlander would be a FA
Happy knowing i dont have to hear the Friends theme at games anymore.
With the below average offense, Verlander’s decision was made easier..all cylinders must work to have a championship club. Imagine the quality free agents they could attract if only..
Bye Dom, I’ll miss you the most.
I know I’m in the minority, but I’d rather have Dom back and keep Eldridge in Sac for another year.
