Who should Mets prioritize bringing back, Pete Alonso or Edwin Diaz?

As the case of Alonso or Diaz
Dan, which one would you prioritize it for the Mets? If
you’re the Mets, look, I mean, obviously, you love to have both
of them back in, medieval times like, one in one a, but if
I have to pick one guy in one guy only, I mean, you have
to go with Pete here, just because you think about what
this team was offensively. They actually took a small step
back in 2025, as opposed to what they were in 2024. And this
is a team that had Juan Soto Peter Lanza land or all
having really, really strong years. I can’t think about the
possibility of how they’re going to be able to put this together
without that, Pete line. Yup, especially in the middle of
that batting order. Look, I understand there’s
limitations. I know that he’s a
liability at times defensively, but I just
can’t imagine this line up guys. What up Pete Alonso? So I
totally get that done and for what it’s worth Alonso and Diaz should be Mets,
long-term, no debate, no questions asked. However, if I look at the free
agent Market, to me, there are ways you can go
and replace Pete. Alonso. I see Alex bregman out there. I
see Kyle schwarber out there. I see Josh Naylor out there. I
Get the closest market. My goodness. It is a nightmare.
Do you want Devin? Williams closing games for the New York
Mets. After what I had to sit through watching Devin Williams for 162 games with the New York
Yankees. So both players are needed for the
Mets to me to have success in 26 and be a big-time baseball
team but you can carve a path shockingly without Pete. What is
the ninth inning without and with uh, who’s the guy? Well, I
mean, there is no good answer here. You know, you picking between two bad ones of
having to let At one, what? Let going to get
go. But as you mentioned JJ, you know why we talking about
money with the Mets? I mean, there’s a two guys, you should
bring back if they’re the two most important players to bring
back for your team, then you bring them back, but if I have
to choose, I mourned and side on this because you do need
Pete. He’s an everyday guy. So don’t need the
protection. He’s the one that impacts you
every single day and teams do put bullpens together. I mean
the Dodger scrambled, they had a perfect offseason as far as
building up a bullpen. All their guys got hurt or were bad.
The guys, they brought in it that they still won the World
Series, so, You can get through that. But I
think, why do you have to choose? You know, if money is No
Object those are guys you have to bring down but it but is
it about money because the logical side of me says okay well yeah great Steve
Cohen has all the money go out and get these players but I like
I don’t think it’s a good investment to invest in Pete,
Alonso long-term or Edwin Diaz or any closer son of knock on
Diaz long-term at Alonzo that have to
be the caveat where I want to be the DH. Oh, I’m not, so
sure that it’s necessarily just about the money here. They’re
also baseball. Has to be made and it just be will bring
everybody back and then go get tarek school ball, and then goes on another free agent.
Like, at some point, you got to try to
build a thing. The right way, with with, also being
responsible and small with your decision, what I term to. I
mean, what do you consider, long-term anything more than,
what would be a responsible for a guy, like, Pete or even see us? I mean, you’re gonna pee pee
Lanza, more than 60, out of the 15 years. Even you’re still alive years,
okay? I would go five or even six
years, but the money to me is what matters? Most you honestly
gigawatts is going to get seven who’s giving Alonzo 7 right on
track 12. No, I don’t think that. Yeah,
but then we talked about 170 million dollar contract. Also my
priority at him would be DH and it’s not even, okay? We’ll
just say Pete, whatever you can’t operate and say, well,
bring em back. Sure, we’ll just pay him. What about Diaz? You
think paying Dave? Edwin Diaz for years for 100 million boxes, a good investment. You just
said, there’s no God, there’s no good options. All right what
about potentially Suarez. Who also has he pitched in New York?
You know what happened? How many guys get brought in?
Like swaras swing just completely balmy, five years
old, by the way guys, He’s 33 35 years old on opening day. Next year,
Roberts Wars, you already have a guy that can pitch here has
excelled here. I know I’m a little bit worried as Diaz
gets old as hard, he throws that there could be problems
health-wise but I don’t get into it. That the length of the contract here, it
is money there. And if you want to a championship in the next
one or two years, does anybody care all over town? You have a
window right now, you just gave want subtle 800 million dollars.
Like this is not about 45 years. Now, if you two met these guys
over here, but I’m not opposed to spending.
But spending on those guys, in addition to what
they’ve spent on, I’m just not, so sure that
that’s the right business for me. What about Alonzo will be a
good backup plan in the event of the Mexico. But I mean, look,
if you’re just trying to replace the production
offensively, I mean, you have to look at schwarber, right? I
mean he’s probably like the only if you
growing mano-a-mano comp on the open market unless you want
to get into the trade market.
But just free agency. It’s Kyle
schwarber. And look, I understand. Of course he has
limitations. He’s a Centrally a designated hitter.
But as you said the protection in the lineup for guys like
soda, when everybody else if you just want to say, okay, bye
Pete and insert a plug-and-play guy, it’s Kyle schwarber. What
are the things I want to say to? And look, I’m not trying to
be a Debbie Downer here, but we all talk about the labor Horizon with baseball after next
season. What could potentially happen here and we
hear about salary cap potentially and all that stuff.
Do you think these teams as far as putting together a roster and
going about attacking this offseason are, maybe looking
with one eye towards the future? Thinking. Hmm there may or may not be as
salary cap that we have to deal with eventually. I’d be
surprised if there was a salary cap. I know could be a lockout
and stretch it out. Some I think they have to do business
on how the business is right now. And these are going to be
the market rates for these players, because there is a season to
play next year. So these guys have to be signed to get these
deals in. So, I mean, as far as a replacement Pete, Alonso, I
think it made me going to be hearing a lot about his Kazuma.
Okamoto okamoto is going to be coming
from Japan. He’s essentially the Japanese
Pete, Alonso 30 plus, home runs more of a contact hitter.
They’ll puts the ball in play. Doesn’t strike out and a better
Defender. So as you look around, the league does not good
replacements here. Free agent wise for Pete, Alonso. I
think that’s a guy. You’re going to be hearing a lot about

On Baseball Night in NY, Sal Licata, Dan Graca, Dave Lennon and John Jastremski analyze the ramifications of Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz opting out of their contracts. They debate which player is more important for the Mets to bring back and what the alternatives could look like.

  1. @snytv Edwin diaz 4 years 100 million is cheap! Get it done. As far as Pete… I love him and want him back and his defense is undervalued as he scoops with the best of them and saves plenty of throwing errors. I would go 5-6 years thinking in years 4-6 he is a DH. Pay him! This is Steve cohens insider trading money. We are we trying to save it. And by the way that is not enough. They need to resign Tyler Rodger’s and get 1-2 more 3-4 era relievers no more of these 4.5-6 era guys that killed us last year. Then you sign framber Valdez for 4-5 yrs and you have a bonafide number 2 that eats up innings and saves the pen. You wait until after 26 and back up the brinks truck for skunal or peralta

  2. I’m kinda sick of the defensive liability thing with Alonso. I just don’t see it. Is he a gold glove? No, but I’ll take his defense with his offensive production every day. He got tagged with being bad defensively when he was young but he has worked at his defense

  3. Same old same old from this group. I read all the comments like them or not because the fans perspective on the team is way better than these paid "experts"! There is not a day that goes by when one or more
of them start vacillating on their prior comments. Fans are always in tune with the team and their thoughts are what matters to me. Listening to slippery Sal is enough to drive you nuts…..

  4. This is the Perfect Plan ,, If you ( Mets) doesnt Sign Edwin Diaz, We the Dodgers Will do it !!! But If you Mets Resign Díaz,, then Forget about Pete Alonso ( Let Him Fly ) , lets Trade Acuña Jr to the Minnesota Twins for Jose Miranda 1B/ and Marc Vientos with Mauricio to the Houston Astros for Carlos Correa 3B,,,, then go for Skubal ,, thats A WS Championships for Sure!!! Then in 2026 go for José Berrios and The Pitcher of Minnesota Twins ( Pablo ) ,, if you really wants to Win it All!!!

  5. Should sign both but if I have to choose it’s Pete. He plays everyday. Diaz is great but last 5-6 weeks of the season he barely got in the game. Position player

  6. Disappointed in Diaz. Cohen gave him the biggest deal a closer ever got and then he gets hurt in the WBC and wastes a full year of it and won't finish out the contract.
