DISRESPECTFUL Sports Throwback Jerseys?

Here’s Brody Brazil. The voicemail line is always open to you 247. If you’ve got a question, a comment, a compliment, anything to add to this channel, I’ll take it. I literally listen to all the messages at 8334 Brody and then I get to play back and respond to the very best ones. It’s John from Ontario, Canada calling. Just calling to get your thoughts on some upcoming NHL home and home series I’m seeing. We’ve got the Hartford Whalers and the Quebec Nordics playing against each other, right? Well, you know, it’s actually the Carolina Hurricanes and the Colorado Avalanche, but they’ll each be wearing their old locations jerseys, right? Some fans seem to think it’s great, but I think it’s a little disrespectful. Just looking to get your thoughts. Thanks again as always, John. I appreciate the call and I’m right there with you. And I think the reason I have this stance here and now is because I have lived through a team departing their region. I was a fan growing up of the Oakland A’s. I worked side by side with the Oakland A’s for more than 15 years, actually closer to 20. And when they departed Oakland last year, but really the process of the prior several years and them trying to detach and move somewhere else, I felt all those feelings of what it’s like when a team goes away. And I don’t know if you’ve experienced that, but I’m I’m guessing that because you have this stance, you’re at least aware of this, but it’s one of those situations that I’m not sure everybody can even understand what I’m about to say, unless they’ve gone through it before, unless they’re a Nordiks fan or unless they’re an Arizona Coyotes fan or a Hartford Whalers fan or a San Diego Chargers fan or a Seattle SuperSonics fan. And I hate the fact that I can keep naming names here of teams that moved away from their cities and sometimes for not even the best reasons. I hate that I can go down that list. But that brings us to just one photo I want to share with you here. This is not the Adams division clash of of the late ‘9s. This was October 23rd, 2025 when those teams, as you mentioned, Carolina and Colorado. They wore the Nordics and Wher jerseys, all the colors, all the logos, everything. They sold merch. They’re doing it up. And this is not the only time, to your point, that they’re doing it this season. I will say this, just aesthetically, to see this, it’s pleasing to the eye, right? But I also know that there are some emotions and some connections and some feelings that run super deep with it. So I I don’t want to go there yet, right? I’m I’m about to. But I just want to say if it makes me feel good as somebody who enjoys hockey and enjoys the old school nature of things, it makes me happy to see this, but also it makes me a little bit frustrated and maybe almost feeling like there’s some disrespect. And this is meant to be, I guess, a tribute. these two teams showing their heritage and nothing wrong with that, but also in the way they’re displaying it, maybe it does come across as a little disrespectful to Quebec City and also to Hartford because the Nordics left Quebec City in 1995 to become the Avalanche. The Whalers left Hartford in 1997 to become the Hurricanes. And I don’t think that any one of those moves were wellreceived by the cities that were getting left in the dust. Both teams also, by the way, in the years following, and it took Carolina just a few more years to do it. Colorado did it sooner, but both teams won Stanley Cups in their new cities, something that they had not done in the original cities. So imagine if you’re a Nordiks fan and if you’re a Whalers fan and all of a sudden those teams leave, at least they changed names, right? And that’s the same thing with Arizona, right? If you’re a hockey fan in Phoenix, you’re watching the Utah Hockey Club turned now Utah Mammoth and you’re saying, “Well, those are the same guys, but at least they didn’t steal our look, our brand, our logo, our identity.” Now, going back to let’s talk about baseball for just a second. If you are an A’s fan in Northern California, they’ve literally transplanted your team, took the same name and colors, and moved it to Sacramento, and they’re going to try and move it again to Los Las Vegas. And it’s just it’s ripping somebody’s identity away. This is what people bonded over. This is what they rallied around. The colors, the name, the logo, the mascot, all of that. At least in these cases, the teams change their names. And so we knew what they were. And by the way, like teams like sometimes in the NHL, the Atlanta Flames went to Calgary and then they’re the Calgary Flames. So it doesn’t always happen this way even in hockey. But at least in this case, the teams change their identity and then they still won Stanley Cups. But it had both of those cities not feeling great about what happened. And now here we are uh 25 plus years removed and we’re putting their names and jerseys back on and their cities colors and we have nothing to do with those two cities. In fact, as we talk about NHL expansion in 2025 and beyond, how come Quebec City and Hartford aren’t at the top of the list? Atlanta is. I mean, the league is probably going to go back to Atlanta for a third time, maybe to Houston for the first time, maybe back to Phoenix for a second time, but we’re wearing the jerseys of two cities that aren’t even in the mix of getting a team back again, or we to the point of the call, are we really rubbing salt in the wounds here? You have to think about it from their perspective. I get it. The majority of the continent doesn’t care as much about this as maybe you and I do. But is this an okay thing to do? Or is this honestly not cool? These cities aren’t even back in the conversation. They’re not in the mix. Time does not heal all their wounds. I I know that we’re 30 plus 25 plus years away, closer to 30 years away, but it’s it’s not a great feeling. And we’re revisiting that now by bringing it back from the dead. I don’t know. Is it okay to still make shirts? I guess. But is is it okay to have that team wear the logo and jersey and call themselves the the Nordics and the Whalers for a couple nights a year? I don’t know. I believe that the former identities belong in those former cities. I feel like fans in Quebec City should be able to wear Nordik’s gear and and feel okay about it, like they’re still proud of who they are, where they’re from, and and what they want, a hockey team in their city. Same thing in Hartford. I feel like the former identities belong in the former cities to former fans and and quite honestly, nobody else. So, I’m not here to disrespect the ABS. I’m not here to disrespect the Canes for what they did. But I am here to ask, is it disrespectful to transpose those old teams and different cities on your current team and do it as merch and make a ton of money off it? And I get it. There’s some nostalgia there, too. But, I don’t know. This one is hard to hard to digest. So, let me know what you think about all this in the comments section below. 1. Personally, as an Avs fan, I'm indifferent about the Nordiques throwbacks, I really liked the ones they had for the Tahoe games though.

It would be more insulting to me if the New Jersey Devils wore Colorado Rockies throwbacks because theres a team in Colorado again.

  2. Brodie what no one is talking about if Quebec was still a team when Patrick Roy was traded he would have never been traded to Quebec then the question would have been where Roy would end up i say LA .

  3. I just see this as an attempt at profiteering
    by The N.H.L globally
sports teams & leagues are just getting far to greedy in terms of everything that sounds them we are rapidly approaching a cross roads where fans might just say enough is enough & walk away for ever then where will they they be without us the fans

There is only a certain amount you can actually push the envelope before people say sorry but enough is enough never to return.

The N.F.L have reached that point this season for me how will be next league wise.

  4. I feel if the NHL wants to lean on nostalgia and sell merch with these old logos – they should be playing those games in the original cities either in season, an exhibition or outdoor event.

  5. Long time North Stars fan here. I don't actually find it disrespectful — I would love to see the Dallas Stars in a true throwback North Stars jersey, and I appreciate when the Wild rocks the green and gold. I'm not a fan of either of those teams, but seeing them give some homage to the North Stars makes me feel a tiny bit better. I see it as honoring more than being disrespectful. Maybe it's because there's been more time (32 years now since we lost the North Stars!), and I now know the North Stars are never coming back, so seeing a throwback would be the closest thing I know I'll ever get to seeing my old team on the ice again. But I get it — I respect that some ppl would probably feel differently. Any other North Stars fan out there reading this comment…? Do you agree with me or feel differently? Just curious.

But BTW… I do feel that team names should remain in the city a team leaves. If Norm Green had been forced to give up any rights over "Stars", etc, when he took them to Dallas, then the new Minnesota franchise could have re-claimed "North Stars" rather than becoming the Wild. A bit like the Jets proudly returning to Winnipeg… that's how it should be.

  6. My dad was a huge Expos fan, I remember him telling me it didn’t sit right when the Nationals wear Expos jerseys but he was still happy when the nats won the World Series. I could also just imagine the jersey sales of Nathan McKinnon Nordiques jerseys in Quebec has gotta be crazy

  7. As long as the NHL did not leave the team history at the city that lost the team (like NFL did with the Browns) then the team can use the old uniforms in a game. I think it’s a good thing because it allows the league to remind everyone of the past teams and if the city that lost the team really wants a team back, then they know what they have to do to have a chance at getting a team back.

  8. I think it’s fine to sell merch, but I don’t like seeing it on ice. As a Seattle fan, I would be pretty pissed off to see OKC wearing SuperSonics gear.

  9. Same thing with the Titans in the NFL wearing the Houston Oilers logos. Even outfitted the stadium with the old Oilers logo, then gave the University of Houston crap because they used the powder blue, red, and white for an alternate. They didn't even have Oilers branding in it, just the colors. One of the oddest things I've noticed with the Avalanche and Hurricanes is they were both WHA merger franchises. Out of the 4, 3 relocated with Winnipeg now relocating twice. I'd bet if the league could make it happen, they would move the Oilers too. The NHL does not like what the WHA did and they haven't forgotten it.

  10. When the time comes for expansion, forget Atlanta, Houston; they should look back at Quebec and Hartford. Having grabbed a cup of coffee in Hartford for a few years, all folks from CT still love the Whalers

  11. One more example of disrespect was the disregarding of Retired Numbers with these throwback uniforms. For example, the Quebec Nordiques had retired #8 for Marc Tardif. Cale Makar wears #8 for the Avalanche, but it was odd to see the #8 worn by Makar in a Nordiques jersey, because that number was supposed to be retired by the Nordiques.
I think there was a similar issue with #19 by the Whalers (for John "Pie" MacKenzie). Throwbacks are a collision of eras, and sometimes history experiences some collateral damage.

  12. When I was 15 years old I was the biggest Winnipeg jets fan in Manitoba. Lived and breathed jets hockey and when the team left it was horrible. It still will bring a tear to my eye just thinking about the save the jets campaign. We thought we were so close to saving the team but it was not to be. Now we all know the jets are back and when mark Chipman made the announcement I had the same tears but this time for joy.

  13. I think both the Mariners and the Brewers have both worn Pilots throwbacks, and the M's based their City Connect jersey on the Pilots' road uniform.

  14. As a Seattle Supersonic fan, I feel we have reached a point where I just want to see that green be worn again. In Seattle or not. If the sonics were to return to Seattle I would be grateful the threads were retained, if the league would be honest with the city of not having any intention of returning, at least let us see the threads on TV. Thunder could have had some preseason games in Seattle as well, also if we have games in another country, we could have some in Seattle, I feel it was a missed opportunity for the thunder to keep some sort of relation with Seattle and retain some of the fan base up northwest.

  15. This WAS absolutely disrespectful. It's like murdering someone and then go parading around in their clothes and acting like you're honoring them. It was so ridiculous how both teams were praising themselves for 'honoring their histories'

  16. In an alternate timeline we could be having the Nordiques and Canadiens being rivals right now. That would be a hell of a French Canadian rivalry. I think Canada really needs another team. I like the Calgary flames but I think the Nordiques back home would really help the league. Also I'll trade the wild for the North Stars. Always preferred that look.

  17. I hadn't thought about the fact that Oakland not only lost their NFL and MLB teams in short order, the fans also get stuck watching those uniforms for both endure. Nordiques and Whaler fans at least got 20+ years before they had to see those on the ice again. For some that makes it easier and for some it twists the knife they already have in their back.

  18. My biggest issue with this is that these teams want to capitalize on their history by wearing and selling throwback gear but don't care to really honor their history.
The Whalers and Nordiques retired numbers for legendary players. The Hurricanes and Avalanche don't recognize those retired numbers.

  19. Its definitely weird once you take off the nostalgia glasses. They don't even respect the retired numbers of former Nordiques/Whalers players which I think they 100% should at the bare minimum. But its also like watching some weird alternate reality where those teams still exist in the league, which I like.

  20. I agree. Like OKC wearing the Seattle Sonics. Would love to see all teams get their original logos back, Houston be the Oliers again, Baltimore being the Colts, and Seattle getting their NBA team back which was stolen.

  21. IMHO, leave an area, you should lose all association with that previous area. No throwback jerseys, no claim to previous titles, no combined lifetime stats… You left that city, you left those fans, you left that history, especially when you change the team name like these two did.

I'm not saying if you move to a new building the same city, or within the region (e.g., the Patriots from Boston to Foxboro, or the Red…Commanders from RFK to Landover) you have to break from your past. I am saying that moves to different major cities in the same state (Chargers), changing states like the Whalers, A's (both moving from Philly and now Oakland), Dodgers, MLB Giants, Raiders, Boston/Atlanta Braves, Colts, Rams, etc., or changing contries like the Nordiques, original Winnipeg Jets, and Atlanta Flames should not be able to claim that history…

And yes, I will entertain the debate that the NFL Jets and NFL Giants should be "NJ" teams, but they're still in the NYC area (like if the Bengals moved across the river into Kentucky, or had the Flyers moved to Camden back before the CoreStates Center was built in the 90s). Even the 49ers are pushing it… moving from Kezar to Candlestick was fine (like moving from the Polo Grounds to Shea), but Santa Clara is a bit much (90-minutes from center city)…

  22. I think it would be a little bit better and cool if they do these special games in the cities they used to be in. Play a classics game actually in Quebec City or Hartford. Maybe that would be more disrespectful or maybe a little more respectful.

  23. I know the Hurricanes/NHL own the trademark, but the Wolf Pack should be the only team allowed to wear Whalers throwbacks. That branding should have stayed in Hartford.

  24. The year after the Nordiques left Quebec, Patrick Roy threw a hissy fit after he had been left in net one night as the Canadiens were being shelled. He demanded a trade right there and then, and the Habs obliged him by shipping him off to Colorado, where he backstopped their Stanley Cup title run. That trade would never have happened if the team was still in Quebec as the Canadiens were loathe to help out their provincial rival in any way.
