I have been seeing more and more comments here with people not happy with Hardy. Not looking to roast people, I just am genuinely curious what the rub is? From most accounts he is regarded as a great coach, so I find it strange some of our ranks are beefing with him. Interested to hear where some of you are coming from!

  1. Playing Svi 30 minutes while he makes abhorrent defensive mistakes instead of playing Ace. When Svi clearly doesn’t actually make us better. Same goes for Kyle Anderson, Kevin Love… just play the rookies/young guys. Them watching Svi get blown by isn’t going to make them compete harder for minutes, it’s just going to alienate them.

Hardy doesn’t choose players to play defense. He doesn’t have good defenses. The teams have not played hard defensively since he got here and they still don’t. Massive concern.

Letting Clarkson have an insanely large leash the last few years despite being a massive liability and choosing him over sexton who was monumentally more efficient.

Hasn’t given Brice a real chance. Keyonte was one of the worst defenders in the league the last few years and somehow that logic only gets applied to why Brice doesn’t play.

  2. I think the main thing is that we have no idea how good he really is because he’s been given a garbage roster year after year. How do you evaluate that? His lineups and decisions generally seem good. I don’t think I’m a fan of how he’s developing Ace though. Too much standing in the corner. But other than that, he’s fine and a good leader.

  3. The team has had the worst defense in the nba the last two years. All the young players except maybe keyonte have performed poorly. What evidence is there that he is a good coach?

  4. His record is terrible. His young guys may or may not be improving overall. Our defense under him is consistently at the bottom of the league. His demeanor during games is like the ultimate hard ass but tough to do when your career record is atrocious.

Of course, he’s been given bad rosters on purpose so a lot of this might not be his fault but I think the evidence is mixed at best and the assumption he’s a good coach is sort of based on hopes and some commentary

  5. It’s always these rookie yellers. This year it’s the endless let Ace play, give him all the minutes he wants. Let him lose by 60pts. Hardy not doing that…bad coach.

  6. It’s going into 4 seasons of inability to improve our horrific transition defense. That’s the main issue I have with him. Other than that, I think he could be a really great coach with a quality roster (e.g., beginning of 2022 season).

  7. Most teams are using a drive and kick strategy and we simply do not have the athletic talent to be able to implement it effectively. Our high post offense does not have open outcomes for corner shooters or isolated shooters.

  8. Someone said that we haven’t seen him coach a team with a good defense, which is true imo. I’m pretty happy with what he’s done offensively. Even if we’re not hitting out shots, I think we’re consistently getting our shots off. I don’t think an offense can accidentally click like it has.

If you don’t buy that and don’t think he’s great, that’s understandable. But I don’t think you can call him a bad coach after the situation he’s been given. We’re starting year 4 of a rebuild and most of our team can’t even drink.

  9. I think we need to realize that despite not “tanking”, Hardy is clearly fine with players getting roasted and being in bad spots in order to build their skills and see if they are capable of being winning players. It comes at the expense of wins right now, but it helps you figure out who is worth keeping and who just won’t develop as time goes on.

The prime example of this is Keyonte getting bullied the last couple years when bringing the ball up the floor, and teams were specifically game-planning to do it against him, and Hardy just let it happen until he figured it out. We lost entire games the last 2 years because of this specifically, but he is a much better player now because they were willing to do that for his development.

This isn’t a year where we are tanking by not playing our best players, but rather letting our young guys get smacked around until they figure it out, and not specifically scheming to protect them. As we figure out who our guys really are, I am sure we will start seeing coaching schemes that protect weaknesses instead of throwing players into the fire.

  10. Mark Diagenault has entered the chat.

I wouldn’t be too quick to judge Hardy until there front office is all-in on winning.

Until then, it’s a moot point. If Danny want’s the squad to fucking suck for another shot at star like Peterson, Boozer, AJ then it’s impossible to judge Hardy record, imo.

  11. I think he’s probably good. Obviously an elite offensive coach. At some point you can’t be the worst defense of all time every year though. No progress on that end despite drafting a lot of athletes and positional size

  12. Dude I’ll all in. Please keep him here. We all remember we have to “tank” this year. Not his fault.

  13. All of the popular concerns here are ridiculous.

The only real concern anyone should have is how he handles a talented roster and his inability(so far) to coach a good defense.

  14. Before i can see him coach a team with quality players i can’t really say much about his coaching abillities. Problem is that right now we need a coach who can develop players and its a mixed bag there.

Lauri and Kessler have been 2 big pluses but some of the other young guys there are still a lot of questions. Keyonte shows a lot of flashes and potential but he is the most inefficient player i have ever seen, Hendricks hasn’t developed much but injuries have been a big factor, Cody Williams has not looked good at all, Filipowski looks like he has regressesd from his solid rookie season.

Is Hardy the right guy right now, i don’t really know.

  15. So to preface this, I think Hardy is a good young head coach overall and has a brilliant offensive mind. He does have some areas of concern/frustration that I think are fair to monitor and hope get ironed out as we get better players and with time.

    – His teams so far aren’t just kinda bad on defense, they are basically league leading worst every single year so far. While yes, we have young players, players getting traded, we’re tanking to some degree, etc… there should be some marginal improvement you’d hope to see, especially with a roster that has Walker Kessler on it. But so far we just aren’t seeing sustained positive results or improvements in certain areas from his defensive schemes. The 3 point defense especially has been particularly consistently awful. It simply has to be a lot better and I’m still not sold on his love of zone defense.

    – His refusal or delay to call timeouts when the other team is going on a run until the team is well ahead of us and/or had way too much momentum has continued to confuse me. Some of this might just be him wanting to see the young guys figure it out and learn and/or maybe if we are competing for the playoffs this changes.

    – His late game OOB plays the last couple of years have not resulted in many good looks for players. I’m not too worried about this one, because with better players snd experience drawing up those plays, I’d hope this to get better.

  16. No judgment can be made until we are actively trying to win. His play call the other night against the kings was atrocious. Hopefully that was key just trying to be a hero

  17. I wish we had just pushed for the play-in in 2023 after not committing to the tank before the season. Traded so much NBA talent for one fucking Lakers 2027 pick that’s gonna be like in the 20’s at this rate, idk wtf Ainge was smoking. Would’ve been interesting to at least see Hardy (and Lauri) in an actual playoff situation.

  18. What is he good at? By record – the only objective criteria available – he is not only the worst coach in the league but one of the worst of all time.
