I’ve always watched hockey here and there, but Ive just recently become an avid watcher and plan to watch the Red Wings all year. I’m watching the game tonight, and these 3 penalties occurred. I’m struggling to understand what the consequences were? I saw Celebrini and Seider both go to the penalty box, but the Sharks had the power play. It seems they were both in there for the same amount of time too. I don’t understand. I’m sorry if this is a dumb question, just new to watching and want to know the rules.

  1. Bc Seider got 2 penalties (4 minutes) and Celebrini got 1 (2 minutes) they got the 2 minute power play

  2. Seider had the extra penalty for the initial interference call, then he and Celibrini roughed each other up and each got a penalty for roughing. When something like that happens another player (Beggren in this case) serves the extra penalty and a power play happens as would normally for the team with just one penalty called against them.

  3. Sharks got one penalty, we got two. So offsetting minors mean those two sit in the box but it doesn’t impact the number on the ice. The second penalty for the wings is what led to the sharks PP.

    I think.

  4. Seider gets 4 minutes, celebrini gets 2. Since we have the extra penalty, the sharks get a power play. To make this work, detroit sits another player who can come out after the penalty ends or if the sharks score, in this case that was berggren. Celebrini and seider sit in the box for their full penalties and cant come out until after their penalties end and a whistle happens.

Think of it similar to a fight where one guy gets an instigator penalty. Both guys sit for the full 5 minutes and then wait for a whistle. The team that instigated the fight gets the extra 2 minute penalty and thats served by another player who can hop on the ice when the penalty ends. Its the same procedure for penalties

  5. To add on to this, when did they start not going 4v4 for matching penalties?

I’ve been watching on and off for a few years now and feel like this definitively would have been a 4v3 “some” (this might be many years ago) years ago.
