Can Connor Bedard & Frank Nazar Make Their Olympic Hockey Teams? | CHGO Blackhawks Podcast
Remember when the Hawks won seven to three and Connor Badard had a hat-tick and he had four points and the Hawks beat the crap out of the Senators? That was fun. Let’s talk about that a little bit and also get to your mailbag questions next on CHDL Blackhawks. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Heat. Heat. I am Jay Zawaski. That is Mario Tiasi. Sarah Victor is over there running the show yelling at us endlessly. Apparently, I’m a yeller all day. Just bossing us around. Just telling us what to do. It is ridiculous. I’m going to HR. There’s a show at 2:30. Yeah. How How dare you raise If we had HR, I would be going. All right. How dare you raise your voice to us to tell us. I’m going to talk to Tony. He’s not here. I’m going to talk to Oh, well, I’ll send a strongly worded slack into the ether. We love you guys. Thanks for being here. Apparently, we missed a super chat. Yeah. Sorry to stink Weasel. Sorry, stinkasel if we didn’t get to your uh weasel super chat last night. But um thank you for the $4.99. Uh we owe you one. Did you know weasels actually smell pretty bad? I could have guessed. My roommate in college had a ferret. Oh no. I don’t like Get that out of here. I do not like ferrets. No. Hey, it’s a giant. It’s a rat but bigger. Yeah. Let’s put it in our house. And it hides places and then spooks you. No. Get out. I just left the dorm for that day. I got a uh uh my my aunt and and uh my cousin had ferrets when I was a kid. Not a big fan of them. Nice mer. I’m out. I’m out on all mers and marsupials. Out of my house. I do like the gif on on uh the internet of uh I think it’s a a marmet that just screams. It’s like ah Yeah, sounds about right. That’s what they do. Yeah. makes me um I hate possums more than anything. This will be a Blackhawks beat in the summer. Why? Oh my gosh. So, not completely derelish. No, we’ll get to the hockey. Um we did enough. When I when I lived in the when I lived in the city, uh took my dog for a walk one one night. It was the only time I was able to get to a walk with him was at night, so you know, whatever. I’m I’m leaving the apartment and it was a sideyard like entrance and he was like sniffing around like this pile of leaves or whatever and out from the pile of leaves like charges this possum at him and they like tussle for like a second and I’m like I’m like holy smokes I’ve never never seen my dog be aggressive and I like pull him away off the leash and and I see this thing just like flopped over and I was like I was like what the heck? was that? And I look over, I’m like, “Oh my god, my dog just like killed a possum.” And I and I was like I had no idea what to do. I was just like I checked him. I was like, “My dog, not not the possum.” I checked my dog. I was like, “He seems okay.” Like, “Okay, let’s just walk.” And we start going and I look back. Gone. Yeah, it’s gone. Wasn’t there. Uh yeah, I heard my dog Bailey freaking out the other night and I’m like, “The possums are back.” So we have a fence in our backyard and it’s literally on top of the fence and what their defense mechanism is they freeze. Yeah. Yeah. So, it just stands there and Bailey’s just barking at it non-stop and it’s just standoff cuz a possum’s not going to move, right? He’s just looking at me like, “What do I do? I’m just going to keep barking.” So, I literally took a lawn I had like a beach lawn chair and I flung it towards the fence and it got him to run away and the possum to run away and that was my cuz I’m not going I’m not going to hit the possum. Things are gross. That would have been good uh good aim. All right. Well, we should get to some hockey, I suppose, I guess. But that was a good killing of four minutes. Good job, everybody. Um, was a double minor. Before we get to the mailbag questions, there is some news today that appeals uh that uh applies rather indirectly to Connor Baddard. Eight years, $10 million per for Utah’s Logan Culie. Yeah, it was 8 by9 I think that he didn’t sign at the beginning of the season. and then he’s off to a uh tremendous start uh for Utah and is a big part of what they’re building and what they’re building is is going in the right direction and what they’re building is a team that is right now I believe at the top of the central division. They’re very good and a team that like might still take a little bit of like getting used to of in the sense that like they’re not just the like new not not new the newly relocated team um but the rebranded team but also like hey like they’re also like really good like there’s there’s a reason to cheer for and watch Utah other than they’re just kind of new. Like they’re also like playing really well. like Kulie and Gunther and Blackhawks legend Nick Smaltz leads what does he lead the league in scoring second in the league in scoring like just as we all predicted they they got they got a fun group there and Kulie is is a is a big part of that. I think I saw something that said this was the third largest contract out of an entry- level deal in NHL history. And obviously it’s it’s Yeah, new adjusted, but but still like that is that’s really impressive that I think that third largest will track until Conor Bard gets his deal. Yeah, I’m looking at the numbers here. So this year Logan Culie 12 points in 11 games. He has eight goals and four assists. He is a plus five this year for the Hawks. Connor Bard in 10 games. six goals, six assists, 12 points plus four. Over their careers, Logan Koulie has played 168 games. He has 53 goals, 68 assists, 121 points. Connor Bernard 160 games, 51 goals, 89 assists, 140 points. So, if he’s using Logan Culie as a jumping off point, he’s going to get more than Logan Culie. And I think that’s kind of a fair it’s a fair place to begin the conversation with Bedar because a lot of us weren’t really sure like well you know he hasn’t really been the second coming of Sydney Crosby or Patrick Kane yet but when you look at the young players who are getting paid who are getting talked about as the some of the best young players in the league that’s where it’s going to go. So if I’m thinking today what that number is going to be at the end of this year 12. Yeah. And I’m pretty comfortable with that. If it’s eight years, I if it’s eight years, 12 million for Bard, I am I’m taking that and running. Yeah. I I I think that based off of the factors of like importance to the organization, production, and and and projectability, Kulie and and and Badard are are pretty pretty even. Yeah. As far as all those factors go, I think you’d probably say you’re betting that Bard’s ceiling is a little bit higher than Logan Culie, but they’re both projected to be elite level guys. Um, it’s interesting. And I was having a conversation with uh our buddy Tab Bamford with Bleacher Nation Blackhawks and also our friend John Whitman uh broadcaster for the Blackhawks on WGN about Hadard’s contract and the salary cap rather the salary floor. There’s a lot of money coming off the books for the Blackhawks. A lot of players that they’re going to fill out their roster with with the next over the next two or three seasons are going to be on entry- level deals, which will only be about a million dollars as the entry level uh cap goes up. And you got uh Shay Weber’s deal coming off the books. Yes. And you got guys, so many memories. You got guys like Nick Felino, maybe Ilia McKay, maybe Jason Dickinson, maybe Conor Murphy. They’re on expiring contracts. Not sure if those guys are going to be back. That’s a combined like 16 million. Even with Nazar’s extension and Knight’s extension kicking in, they got to spend a lot of money. So, I I do wonder if we’re not thinking of Baddard like penny pinching quote unquote to kind of be like, “Oh, Logan Cougley 8 by 10. Bedard seems like a 11 to 12.” they might get into a situation where they’re like, “We might give Baddard a little bit more so we’re worrying less about how are we going to get to the cap floor and not spending money other places like trying to dip into free agency or like trade to add somebody that’s on, you know, a not great contract, quote unquote, but who’s going to be an NHL player.” Like, you got to start looking at like how are you how are you spending this money, who you’re spending it on. And I think with the influx of guys that likely are going to come up to through within the organization right now, they’re not going to cost you a lot because they’re all on their entry level deals or their second contracts aren’t going to be big money. So Bard might end up getting like and this is just off top of my head like he might be getting like 15 just per season just because they h just because they’re at a spot where they kind of have to start spending this money. I mean that which like 15 million for Bard if he goes on this trajectory is just like yeah that’s going to make sense in like two two seasons. I boy I mean that is a dangerous game to play as like well we’ve got money to spend so we’re just going to give it to you. I mean giving it to Conor Bernard is a pretty safe bet. Yeah. Um but I would imagine that owners wouldn’t love that because it changes negotiation points for guys like hey he’s making 15. I’m better than him right now. So, there’s that part of it. I mean, we The thing is though, like if So, I mean, honestly, who I like who is scheduled to reach for free for agency that has not like resigned already. Uh, Paneran, I mean, Kyle, was Kyle Connor get his deal yet? I think he did. Yeah, let me go look at the So, you know, I just I don’t know. They are going to have to spend some money, but at the same time, you don’t want to spend money just to do it to block up roster spots. Even if you wanted to extend guys you already have under contract, they don’t count for next year. So, you are I That’s why I think like McKavv is probably back for sure. Yeah. And I feel like I’d probably be a little more comfortable saying, “All right, McKay, you’re making like just over four right now. We’re going to give you seven for three years because we’ve got to like we got to and he’ll Sweet. Thank you.” You know, they’ll take that to the bank. I’ll take it. Thank you. I’ve never been happier to be a Blackhawk. That’s amazing. Thank you so much. Um, but they’re they might have to go out and find some of these uh long-term injured reserve kind of deals just to get to the cap floor. But I I just don’t think like overpaying everybody just cuz you need to get the cap floor is a good I’d rather say go find some guys you think can help you. Maybe there is a game. Maybe Martin H just reaches for agency and he loves what the Hawks are doing and you and you give him a big deal. I that to me sounds risky. But again, if he’s agreeing to sign in Chicago, it means he wants to be here. Giggities points out Adrien Kempe as well, who is a really good player who is looking for 10 million from the Kings, but they’re about to have a lot of money come off the books with Kopitar retiring. So, they’re going to have space. Yeah. Well, and I I think as we’ve kind of seen through last off season, everybody’s going to have space. Like, everyone’s getting more cap space as the cap is going up. And I think it, you know, we’ve talked about how bigname free agents probably that’s not going to be the the pool you go into to try and add to your team. It might be trades. Um, but I think we’re seeing a a trend of of teams having to kind of wi with within their own system inhouse um build their rosters. Looking at here are the top some of the top free agents going uh into next summer are Tammy Paneran uh Alex Ovuchkin, Patrick Line, John Carlson, Jacob Trouba, Kevin Hayes Copitar, but he’s retiring. Anders Lee, Ryan Mcdana, uh Genny Malin, Kempe, Jaden Schwarz, Nous, Nick Schmaltz needs a contract. Uh Oliver Borkstrand, Christian D’vorak, Charlie Coyle. Like looking at a lot of these guys, I’m not thinking that many of them really entice me for free agent contracts where you’re spending a lot of money for four or five or six years because of what the organization is trying to do, what they’ve built. And we see by the end of this season, you’re going to have to, by the way things have played out so far early this year, you got to find a spot for Oliver Moore. You got to find a spot for Nick Lardis. You got guys like Kevin Kchinsky, Ethan Delmro, Nolan Allen trying to figure out what they are at the professional level. Are they buried? Are they blocked? Are they going to get into the NHL? They all need new contracts. Um, I just I I just think you got Fondell and Bu who are likely signing professional contracts once their seasons are over. Um, you got AJ Spellesy likely doing the same thing. Uh, they just have a lot of players coming up needing to find spots in the organization and I think that that’s what they want to bank on. So, I don’t know if going out into free agency and committing five or six years for a big free agent is what they want to do. Like, yeah, they got to spend money to get to the cap floor and everything, but I don’t know if you want to say we’re going to invest 5 million in I don’t know. No, I looking at this, I’d rather pick I’d rather pick one of these guys. Yeah. Nas, Alex Tuck, Adrien Kempe. Give them big money. you’re playing on the top line with Baddard and with whoever and that’s how you solve the problem. And I look I I don’t mind if they go up high with Bedar if they’re going to I’m very confident that Conor Bedard by the end of the eight years is going to be worth whatever they pay him. Right. Right. Like I don’t I don’t think he’s going to get the Capri off deal. They’re not going to give him 17 million or 16 million. But if he’s somewhere 11, 12, 13 million, I’m fine with any of it because of what we’re talking about. But the thing that is that concerns me is like you’ve been saying, there are so many guys that need spots if not this season then next or the season after next. I just don’t want to tie up a lot of roster spots. And you are freeing up a lot of them this year. You know, you are freeing up one, two, I’m going to say MO’s back probably. Three. There’s so three forward spots for sure. Felino, Dickinson, and Laferty for sure are freed up. So that gives you a spot for Moore and Lardis and whichever one of those other forwards you want to pick. And then you got to figure out like is Colton Doc a guy you want here full-time. He’s an RFA. You want to try like they’re gonna have to start moving some of these pieces because they just don’t have the space for them. Or you just have Rockford be the greatest AHL team in history. That’d be fun. Yeah. I mean I mean and this will be something that I think we can expand upon as the season goes on. Yeah. Um but I think with the the Lucas Riel trade, I think is probably our first example of a player a lot of people like doesn’t have a spot anymore. So you got to move on from them, right? And that’s going to be a reality that we might end up having to cross with some of these some of these young guys that we’ve seen their development over the last few years. we’ve invested in them becoming pros and becoming a part of things. And then it just by the numbers game and by how different players develop, they just might not have spots here and they might be trade pieces to add something bigger uh down the line. And it’s it’s going to be a tough reality as we say goodbye to some of these guys cuz it’s it’s inevitable. Not all of these players will make it as Blackhawk. There’s just a numbers game. Yeah, there’s just too many. All right, we got to hit the break zone back in two minutes. Hit that like button for us. Uh, and we want to get to 100 by the end of the show. We had like what, 700 last night. We got to get at least 100 on this one. Let’s go. Step it up. Back in two on CHGO Blackhawks. Whatever the moment, it’s never ordinary at bet 365. Looking at the chat, some people suggesting finding more veteran contracts like Sheay Weber to bring in, but I feel like we’re getting kind of to the end of that era where you’ve got bigname players at big contracts that are kind of running out. Mhm. Get Seth Jones back, put him on LTI, and I I really don’t know. I don’t know what the uh there’s got to be somebody out there. Yeah. I mean, there’s there’s bad contracts still all around the league, but I I think how many teams are are thinking like, here, we’ll give you we’ll offload this player that’s still somewhat serviceable so you reach the cap floor and you be competitive Blackhawks. Like, I think teams are going to start coming around to like, oh, you’re harmless. You’re at the bottom of the of the standings. It’s going to be like, well, we might actually be helping this team, right? And maybe they’re in division or in conference or whatever, and you don’t want to give them And the cap going up too is also not only is it raising salaries for free agents, it’s also a lot it’s letting bad contracts be less bad and less problematic for teams. So, you know, Seth Jones making nine and a half last year versus making nine and a half next year, right? It’s like, oh, that’s Well, he cost Florida seven, right? because they but still even still that that point still stands of like those kinds of contracts and how you look at them they become more digestible as everyone just gets more money to work with right all right visit fourseasons heatingcooling.com for all their special offers and money-saving coupons that’s four seasonasons heatingcooling.com all right let’s begin with the mailbag portion of the show Sarah do the honors please this one from original six-pack says is really tired of the Baddard Cabbrini comparisons. It would be a valid discussion if they were both in the same draft class. Both will have long NHL careers. Let’s leave it at that. Bard will be a valuable player for the Hawks for years to come. But let’s put aside generational. Let’s just watch him grow as a player in this league and appreciate how hard this kid works at his craft. That’s far too reasonable. See, here’s the thing with for me at least with the Bard Cbrini stuff. I think we’re coming from it looking at it as we as Blackhawks fans are in the in the trenches of this Badard CBrini thing, right? Blackhawks fans and Sharks fans have been at each other over social media for a few years and that’s continuing. But how we forget how Cydney Crosby and Alex Ovetkin came into the league in different drafts, both number one picks. they were rivals, you know, not in the same, you know, in the in similar situation to that of Celibbrini and Baddard and how the Ovetchkin and Crosby generational talent, top of the league, face of the future, all that stuff, how that drove the league. Sure. And it’s and and sure maybe there was some actual rivalry between those two guys, but it seemed like they were pretty like they they when they had to face each other, they you know, they they play they played into the kayfave of, you know, of it. But they they knew that they were both really good players and had respect for each other, like you said. But Darden and Salabbrini are friends. Like they’re not actual rivals. But having those comparisons, those rivalries, quote unquote, is good for the league. Across the league, 30 other fan bases and and you know, general consumers of the NHL are going to pit Bard and Celabbrini against each other or compare them. And that’s a good thing because both of these players are comparable in their impacts for their respective organizations. Crosby and Ovuchkin different players. Celebrating Badard are different different players, but they play the same role and they’re and they’re tasked with doing the same things with for their organization. So with them now running parallel uh and sure they’re different draft years whatever couple of months age difference does it does it really matter all that much I don’t think so like that them running parallel and starting to be awesome at the same time it’s it’s good for the league I think the difference between actually let me clarify this it feels different than the Ovetkin Crosby thing because social media is so prevalent now and you really can’t ignore it. Like here I I just as you’re speaking I went to the NHL’s Instagram page where they highlighted the Bard hattrick and there’s a couple Bard pictures. Then there’s four comments down somebody with a Sharks uh handle with Will Smith and Mlin Celebriny laughing on the bench. Uh, you know, there’s a bunch of comments like, uh, you know, Sharks fans let this 19-year-old live in her heads run free. Uh, celebr ignore it. So, anytime something positive is made about either player, there is a flood of, “Yeah, but this guy.” And I think that is what can be frustrating as someone who consumes NHL media. It’s like, oh my god, like he had a hat-tick and four points. Why would anyone come in here just to crap on that feet because they’re more dug in on the Celabbrini thing? I think that’s what exhausts people is like, look, the the bar argument, who’s better, this guy or that guy has been going on since the dawn of sports. That will never stop. Yeah. That’s why that’s why sports media exists. Yeah. But I I just think that it can get a little bit Oh my god. Like it’s just that you’re just beating over the head with the negativity a little too much. I think I think it I I think I I think your point of like the scope of the internet and coverage and social media does change that from one generation to the other. Um but I but I I I still I still you know I go back to I when I was young and naive watching Sydney Crosby and and Alex Ovuchetkin take you know jump into the league. I was a big Ovetchkin fan and I hated Sydney Crosk. Of course you did. Cuz he was It’s the same thing as like the people that hate LeBron James cuz he was forced down your throat, which is my least favorite term, but like, oh, he’s on the cover sports story. He’s a high school student. He hasn’t won anything. Oh, he’s this and that. And then, and then he goes on to deliver exactly what was hyped about him, just like Crosby. And finally towards the end, people be like, “Okay, fine. He was really good.” But I think people were so sick of the Crosby hype before he even arrived. Same with Baddard, by the way, that they just were like, “F that.” Ovetkin’s like the hipster version of this and I think Celabbrini is like, “Oh, I don’t like Bard. Everybody likes Bard. I’m liking Celabbrini instead.” So, it I think that’s a big part of it, too, is people just don’t like being told who’s going to be good before it’s proven. And I think just kind of to wrap this up so we don’t do the whole show on it. Hawks fans feel it more because I do think there is a bit of defensiveness for Baddard from Hawks fans because he is their guy. Mhm. And I think that overall Hawks fans probably expected a little more from Baddard at this point given all the hype there was. Yeah. Yeah. So, I think there is a little bit of the maybe the Sharks fans are right and maybe Cabbrini is better and I don’t like the way that feels, so I’m just going to push as hard against it as I can. At the end of the day, they’re two very different players. It’s and if we want to just keep it local, it’s like comparing Taves and Kane. They’re both awesome. They’re both first ballot hall of famers. They’re both on the Mount Rushmore of this organization, but the similarities in their game stop there. They’re completely different guys. Yeah. And I think you could say the same for celebrating Bernard. Okay. Next. Did we accomplish anything? Nope. All right. Uh Hawkeye 7720 says, “Uh, after Nazar’s hot start to the season, what is the likelihood that he will make team USA for the Olympics?” We can also spin this into some Bard conversation, too. Mhm. Uh Frank Sarvali, by the way, was a guest on yesterday’s CHSN pregame show and mentioned that he thinks that both Nazar and Baddard are on the outside looking in of their Olympic teams. Uh he did say that Nazar’s got a better chance just because the forward depth with Team USA isn’t quite as deep. Um he said he still called it a bit of a long shot. Uh but his play has opened up some eyes. It’s gotten some attention. He does believe that Baddard has been passed by Celibbrini and Frank forecasts that Celbrini’s more complete game will make him Canada’s 14th forward. NHL.com put out their projections for the Canadian roster and neither Baddard nor Celibbrini were on it. So I think that both guys I kind of agree with Frank that it’s a long shot for both. Yeah. Um, but I think not only the way Nazar has played so far, um, but the way he performed at the CH World Championships got a lot of people’s attention, too. So, if he’s still going at this pace over a point per game before that decision has to be made in January, then I think he’s got a decent shot. But I I think his shot is bigger than Bernard’s. Yeah. I I think you got to look at how those players might fit into those teams. And I think if you plug in because neither one of them are going to be in the top six for Canada or USA, who could play more of a depth role, quote unquote, I’m using a lot of quote unquote today. who could play more of a of a depth role for Team Canada or or Team USA as like a fourthline guy. My money is on Frank Nazar and the way that he plays fitting that style more than Conor Bard being able to f fit that style. So, if it comes down to that where they’re, you know, one of the depth forwards, I’ I’d give the edge to Nazar being able to fit that role and fit the team better. Um, but I mean we we said at the in the summer like what would it take for some of the for some of these guys like Nazar and Velic and Baddard and so on to get consideration for those teams and it was they had to go get off to a hot start to grab the attention. Both you know those both of those guys Nazar and Bard were invited to their teams orientation camps. That’s a good start. And then they’ve both gotten off to hot start. So they’ve done everything that they could be asked to do. But even Bedard uh after last night was just like team Canada is such a stacked Yeah. roster. That’s really it’s really hard to It’s really hard to crack it. And and don’t forget 2010 Olympics in for team Canada, they didn’t have Steven Stamos who put up 50 goals that season, right? So like a lot of and he was what 20? like a lot of really good players get left off those teams and and a lot of times, especially considering that this is like the first Olympic experience in in 10 plus years, you might see team Canada and USA hockey and and so on and so forth go for guys that are a little bit more mature and might be able to handle the atmosphere and the environment and the pressure of that situation more than they might go with a 19 or 20 year old. I think you can on these obviously pick Connor Hellabuk and Jake Hotinger as they’re definitely going to be on the team. Yeah. One and two. Um, so then the question becomes Jeremy Swayman, Joey Decord, Spencer Knight, Thatcher Demco, Dustin Wolf. Yeah. Alex Stolars, Anthony Stolars, rather. Alex Lion. Yeah. Like all these guys have had good years and Spencer Knight has been outstanding to start the season. There’s no doubt about it. Yeah. Um Jeremy Swayman, I don’t know if I mentioned him, but he sort of seems to be the favorite for the third, even though I mean, he’s been bad. Yeah. 886 save percentage and a 345 goals against. Uh Dustin Wolf, 887 save percentage, 344 goals against. Uh even Odder not not tremendous numbers. 909 save percentage 2.61 uh goals against Hellob though I mean 9 926 save percentage he’s been really good Demco 926 save percentage he’s been really good but at the top is Spencer Knight. Yeah a 930 save percentage uh was higher before last night’s game. his uh saves above expected goals or expected goals saved above average is leading the league. You know, he’s saving the Blackhawks basically a goal and a half per game he steps out there. So, you know, I I I think I I think past uh performance and stature means something when these Olympic rosters get get shaken out. Hella Buck and and Oddinger. Those are guys you you definitely want to go with, but I don’t think you can default to a guy like Jeremy Swayman just because he’s been in the conversation more. I think you got to go with a guy who’s feeling it sometimes at that moment. And Spencer Knight, I I think the way he has started this season, um, you know, he’s been on a on a big world junior stage for Team USA before, you know, he’s familiar with the with with the program. I think that’s something that has to be considered. And sure, is he going to start for Team USA? Probably not. No. But I think being in the conversation, being one looked at as one of the three goalies that can be trusted for an Olympic group, I think that’s a that’s that means something to to those goalies. So bias aside, I think you look at how how these US goalies have started the season and if it continues leading up through November and and close to when rosters have to be finalized, I think you really have to make a a case for Spencer Knight being in there. There’s certainly a case, but for as good as he’s played, you know who has been better in pretty much every category? Dad Demco. Yep. After last night, Demco now leads the NHL in goal saved above expected with 9.5. Spencer Knight’s third with 8.8 behind Demco and Logan Thompson. Uh goal save above expected per 60. Uh I got to filter this out because it doesn’t have all the of guys who have started five games or more. That on top three 1.378 like he is on top of every category. So, as good as Spencer Knight’s been, that Demco has been better. And uh I think he’s got more of a uh track record right now than Knight does. So, look, I would love it to be Spencer Knight. That would be awesome, but I think he’s got some seniority ahead of him and some a little more of a proven track record ahead of him. And if they are going to go with a young potential star, I feel like Dustin Wolf kind of has the edge right now. Um is kind of like, hey, we’re going to give a kid a look. It might be Dustin Wolf. So, I don’t know. I think there’s an outside chance, but um any argument you make in favor of Spencer Knight, Kucks fans can look at you and say Demco’s been better in every category, which is almost impossible to imagine, but it’s true. He is. He has been. Sure. So, yeah. I mean, it it’s it’s he’s in the conversation squarely for sure. Um, but as many are pointing out in the chat, um, health will be will be something to consider with with Demco. Like, he’s off to a great start, but he’s also got a history of missing a lot of time. So, I mean, look, I I I think Spencer Knight has has earned his way into the conversation. Um, I don’t know how many goalies they invited to that orientation camp, but we know he wasn’t part of it. But I think I think he’s someone that should be on their short list. If you if you’re saying we’re going to pick three and there’s six in the conversation, he’s got to be in. Oh, 100%. Yeah, there’s no doubt about that. All right, let’s get to the next one here. Sarah, this one from our friend Warren Bedards says, “Do you think there’s any chance down the road, maybe at the end of Solder Bloom’s current contract where management prefers to play Berezoi over Kameso?” And as far as they would be content to move on from Kameso, even though he’s been in the organization for a while, I mean, if Berezoy is just outstanding, injury Kzo. Yeah. But I I think that that’s it’s a little early to start that conversation, I would say. Um but Brazo had a pretty good start in Rockford. Yeah, I mean uh Drew Kzo just had a shut out the other night. Um Brazo had a had a good start, especially for honestly not really knowing a whole ton about him when he got into the organization, but um he’s had a good start. I I think with Drew, he’s got just to give the numbers, uh he is 2 and 0 with a 1.9 goals against and a 944 save percentage for Get it done. Um it’s only two games though. Yeah, it’s a long season, but I I think with Drew Kzo, there’s still within the organization a belief that he’s going to be a a contributor eventually. Um, what do you what do you see Solder Bloom as is I think is a big question. Is he is he part of the long-term picture? Do you want to invest in him as a as a backup? And then then you do have the conversation of Drew Kzo becomes maybe a trade piece or something. Who knows? Because if you have like if you have a starter and a backup you feel confident in, you know, I I I know we’ve seen a lot of like goalending by committee that has had some success in the NHL. Um but I don’t think it’s necessarily like you have to have three starting goalies, you know, NHL caliber starting goalies to have success. with with Spencer Knight like he said like he he has expressed he wants to be like a guy that plays 60 games a year or more. Um that’s not all that uh common nowadays, but he seems like so far he’s got the capability and the mentality of wanting to be able to do that. So I don’t know. I I I think right now you’re just in a good spot that you feel confident in Knight. You feel confident in Solder Bloom. You still feel like you have a really good thing in Drew Kzo. And so far this season, Adam Gyen in college is off to a good start, which he’s needed kind of a rebound. You got Berezoi in the mix. That’s he’s off to a good like the goalending situation is in a really good spot. Yeah. And I think you just need some more time this season to let things play out before you start, like you said, having the conversation of do you need to move anybody, right? So I know Sada blooms up for at the end of the year, I believe, right? End of next year. End of next year. Yeah. Yeah. So still have some time to figure things out, right? And I think that that really fits the timeline well for Drew KSO to maybe move into a I’ll just I think initially back up, but then if he plays himself into like a 1B situation where you feel confident going, you know, one of every four starts or is for KSO, then sure. Kzo was an RFA this summer though, so that that’ll be interesting. They got to make a call on him. But it feels like before they traded for Knight, the plan was like, let’s just keep developing this guy and then he’ll be our guy in the in the near future. But he can he can certainly I don’t think there’s anything wrong with him coming up and being one of the best backups in the league for three or four years while you figure out is Spencer Knight your guy long term. And I I’d feel very confident in him his ability to do that. Yeah. But who knows? And maybe I know we just talked earlier in the show about all these entry-level deals, but eventually those deals are going to stop being entry level and you will have to make some tough decisions because if all these prospects, you know, develop the way we hope they will, that’s going to get expensive. We learned that very quickly with the Dynasty Hawks where, oh boy, it’s not just Kanan Taves, it’s Bufflin, and it’s Jmerson and it’s uh and oh my god, we found Brandon Sod and oh my god, we found our Tammy Panera. like just gets the the the the guys you have to pay get more and more and more and you got to make some tough decisions. So that’s years away. That’s I mean we’re talking four or five years down the road before we even have that conversation. But like you said, Mario, they’re in a very healthy spot goalending wise. Um and just like they are kind of in at every position, they’ve kind of got an embarrassment of riches as terms in terms of prospects of guys that people around the league feel like are NHL players eventually. Mhm. Now it’s a matter of them getting here and showing what they are at the NHL level, which so we’ll see. But um yeah, no need to rush that decision at all. Um Mickey Sticks 21 with a $5 super chat says, “Could this coming off season be the year of the offer sheet?” Feel like the last three offseasons has been the year of the offer sheet. It’s not once has it happened. I think it’s going to be harder now than ever though because yeah, all of a sudden teams have this found cap space and if there’s a guy they really like, they’ll probably be able to keep him. So, and if and if let’s kind of look back at the Hawks like the Jmerson Emmy situation. Yeah. Where the Sharks offer cheated, the Hawks had to match and move on from the Emmy. If someone comes for an offer sheet for a player a team really likes and they got to match it. Well, now with every team having cap space, if they have to move a piece they’re not quite as high on, it’s way easier to do than it’s ever been. Yeah. Like, oh man, we got to match this offer sheet, so we got to move our second line right winger who had 60 points. We got to move him to make room for this so he can keep this guy signed. Like I you know I think it’s going to be much harder for offer sheets to actually result in players moving teams. Yeah. I Yeah. And I and I think too like the conversation earlier regarding like you know how they’re navigating the cap floor. I think if someone were to offer sheet on the Blackhawks I think they wouldn’t unless it’s something ridiculous like someone someone offers sheets a guy for $20 million or whatever. Okay. Are you are you really risking five first round or four first round picks? You know, it’s it’s it just seems like it it seems like it’s it’s a it’s not going to become as common as a lot of people thought it was going to be. And you know, we heard it was offer sheet, McTavish, offer sheet, all these guys. I just all those deals eventually got done. Yeah. Without you know, offer sheets hitting the table. So, I I I think it’ll it’s it’s still something that can be used. Um, you know, the Blues did it effectively. Uh, yes, they did. But I I I think it’s I don’t think it’s something that’s going to be every offseason you’re looking down the list and saying, “Yep, there’s at least four guys getting offer sheeted this year.” It’s I don’t think it’s going to work that way. Agree. All right, we got some more. I know Sarah. Uh, this one from the Hawkhog Train. And I mentioned this on last night’s show, but for those who missed it, I got kind of called out here, which is appropriate. Uh, the Hawk Hog Train says, “Thursday’s episode, this is to me, uh, you said if the Hawks were in a wild card spot, you would trade the vets and let your kids play. According to you, what’s the use in pushing only to get blasted in the first round? The next episode, you completely flipped. You said you would keep the vets and probably get blasted in the first round, but playoff experience would be good and they could let the young guys marinate a little bit longer. So, which is it? Keep the vets or trade them?” I the the reality of this and I talked about this last night if you missed it. Hog train was like I don’t know the answer right now. I think we need to see how this goes this season. Um you also kind of need to know what are you getting in return for Jason Dickson and Conor Murphy and those guys. Also, is Bav going to be available for you or is he going to go deep into right the college playoff? like are you okay leaving Mo and Renzel down or uh Mo and Lardis down in Rockford for the whole year? I saw Scott Powers reply to somebody on Twitter yesterday. I don’t think they’re going to be here for some time about those guys. So, it’s not imminent for Moore or Lardis. So, maybe they’re comfortable just giving him the whole year down there. Um so, there’s a lot of context to it. I I think that look if if you’re in a firm playoff spot at the deadline, let’s say you’ve got a four or five point lead on the wild card spot or something like that and all you’re getting offered for Jason Dickinson or Conor Murphy is a fourth or a fifth round pick. Why not? I mean, why not just see what happens? Yeah, because because what is the value of having that if it’s a mid or late round pick down the road? What’s the value of having that and moving that guy that could have been contributing to your team playing as we’ve all been begging and asking for this team to play significant games in February and March and April. That is a that’s a learning experience and that’s a valuable experience for young guys to have. Have those games that matter. Be standings watching. if you get into getting into the playoffs and pushing pushing to get into playoffs and being in there being in those atmospheres, being in those situations um for for young players, like that is a a growing experience. That’s a learning experience. That’s that’s valuable. We saw with how they’ve handled things in Rockford. They’ve made pushes with the young players to get into the postseason and and those guys like like Vic and Doc and uh the guys that have gone through, they’ve played postseason games. they’ve had they’ve been in those atmospheres. So, that’s a valuable experience. I I think if you’re if you’re weighing the importance and the value of mid round picks for these veteran players to open up roster spaces for younger players or this team pushes and they get into a playoff spot, I think it’s more valuable for them to get into the playoff spot. I think I think the the the weight of playoff experience I’m not and I’m not saying like they’re going to go into the playoffs and get go on a deep run, you know, sure. Would it suck if you get waxed and swept in the first round? Absolutely. But I think this is a team that everyone, even people in in the Blackhawks world at their most optimistic, weren’t thinking that they were going to do anything. If this team gets into the playoffs, you’ve already won. You’ve already won this season if that happens. So the outcome almost doesn’t matter. Yeah. And if you and and sure if you don’t get anything in return, if Jason Dickinson, you know, goes to free agency and he gets a contract elsewhere, I think you live with that because then one way or another, that roster spot has now been open for a B or a Fondell or whoever. Same with same thing with Murphy and and and and you know th those veterans. If you don’t get anything back from him, but you got into the playoffs and you got Conor Bard at age 20 playing in the playoffs, I take that tradeoff over a fourth round pick. And if we look to like Lev Renzel looks so good at the end of last year and we all were like, especially Renzel, we’re like, oh man, Renzel is going to be in the CER conversation. He’s going to have a great year. He has struggled to start this year. He’s not been bad, but some massive ups and downs. So, I don’t think that just simply starting their careers a couple months earlier for Lardis or more, bringing them to the NHL just because they’re doing well in Rockford isn’t isn’t necessarily going to make them significantly better next season. It doesn’t really work that way. I also think you’ve got to look at these guys as as human beings. Like a lot of these guys, the guys we’re talking about, Felino, Dickinson, Murphy, have been here leading. They could certainly be like, “Get me the f out of here. This sucks. I want to compete. Trade me.” Instead, they have leaned in and said, “I want to be part of this thing. I want to see it through.” And then when you’re about to see it through, you’re like, “Thanks. Bye.” Right? I think that you’ve and even if you don’t care about them because you feel like, “Well, they’re gone this summer anyway. Who cares? You got to do what’s best for business.” How does that make the young players feel who played their asses off, worked hard this summer to get better, to have a more complete game? they did everything you ask. They’re overperforming or they’re performing earlier than you expect and they get you to a playoff position or even in the conversation and then you pull the rug out from under them by trading a bunch of valuable veterans. Then they’re like, “Whoa, wait a minute. We did everything we were supposed to do. Why are you pulling the plug on this thing to get a couple fourth round picks or to bring some kids up that might not be ready yet?” Right? Like I think you’ve got to think about the impact it has on the players on the team. Conor Bernard said it first week of the season. I want to win now. Yeah. I’m not here to win three years from now. I want to win right now. So, I think our excitement to see young players come up. Man, Nazar has been so awesome and Betard’s been awesome and Renzo and Lefch have been good and and look at Ryan Green on the first line and like you just get it’s like you need another hit of a great young player like come on, you know, feed that feed that addiction. It’s okay. There’s no problem with letting uh Moore and Lardis and others just spend this year in Rockford and then there’s plenty of roster spots open for them in camp and then they’ve also got to compete for him right in camp which I like and and I think consider you know you say oh they’re doing they’re doing the same thing that Frank Nazar did right well Frank Nazar was doing it in Rockford while Chicago was but yes and they are not but through the first 10 games of the season. So, the idea of like, oh, you got to get them up here cuz look how good they’re playing. Well, you don’t need to change anything right now with the with the roster configuration and the lineup, like what they’re doing right now is working. And a lot of people are making the point in the chat. It’s just like if this continues, like there’s no need to shake things up because it’s working. And Nick Felino said it after after last night’s game of just the collective um desire for this group to want to have success and and bring the Blackhawks back to what they were a number of years ago. Like you don’t want to you don’t want to shake that up like you’re saying. Like you don’t want to take the guys that have you know preached the culture and the identity and now you’re getting it. uh and you’re seeing the benefits of it and then the guys who have been like the ones that have endured a lot of the the the tough parts of of this rebuild. You don’t want to take them away from that. And sure, maybe if you trade them, you trade him to a contender, they still play in the playoffs, whatever. Um but I I I think it’s it’s an organizational statement to say like if they’re if they’re in that position to see it through, they get to see it through. Think of it as the human version of the Phoenix Coyotes. like we put all this work in, we drafted all these kids and then they leave for Utah, right? Yeah. It’s it’s tough. And Sprout says, “What if it’s a second? What if it’s a first?” You’re not getting a first round pick for Conor Murphy or Jason Dickinson. You’re just not to me like Which Yeah. Yeah. And it would be a contender’s first, which is towards the bottom of the first, and then second round picks in the NHL or I don’t want to call them coin flips, but the success rate of second round picks is much lower. If someone wants to be reckless and give you a first for one of those guys, then you trade one of them. Sure. Yeah. I mean, but like you still want to be able to keep your prospect system robust. Um, but as we’re already seeing, as we’ve kind of like alluded to today, there’s they got too many guys. there’s already too many guys that that are going to be a that are likely going to be a part of this that you just don’t have room for. So, yeah, having still down the line more first and second round picks is good and that’s how you keep a team cycling through young players. Um, but at some point it becomes a you just oversaturate things if you have too many like if you have too many picks. Like it’s great to have those guys, but you got to move them around at some point and you’re going to be trading a lot of these guys. So, I I I think it’s if if ever there was a time to use the Family Guy, the mystery box could be anything. It could even be a boat. Yes. It’s that like if you’re in a playoff spot with Dickinson and Murphy and Mavev and Fino and all these guys and you say, “Oh, but you could have second round picks.” It’s like, okay, well, you have a team that’s fighting for the playoffs, team that’s in that picture, right? Why would you give that up for down the line? a player who in four years could maybe be in the NHL. Like I I I think you you might have a spot this season, as we talked about in the mini pod last week. You might get to a point this season in the next month or two where you have to change your expectations. You have to change your thinking of what this season can be. Is it going to be a success of not finishing in the basement or is it going to be a success of we made the playoffs, right? or we’re even fighting for a playoff spot down to the down to the wire, which honestly for a team like this, yeah, that’s a win. If the end of the season’s approaching and they’re fighting for a playoff spot, that is like playoff hockey for them. No one no one expected this team to get to like an 80 point season, right? And they might do that and that’s all that’s already a successful season. And then if you put on top of it like you know playoff chase that’s that’s ch gravy on the poutine. All right let’s move on to uh I think we got maybe one or two more so let’s try to knock them out here. Um this one from Chill Dog uh says wonder what grades you guys would give our total defense after the first nine games. Blastic to me is solid but still growing and not anywhere near all-star level. He’s our top anchor today and we have not one but two exceptionally young raw talents in Lev and Renzel and I wonder if it’s too much to have a team bringing up both of them at once. Kaiser’s been solid. Murphy is Murphy. The power play is awful awful and that’s anchored by a D up top. We probably had to expect growing pains with the D. Just curious for your early thoughts. I know it’s noticeable with missing Seth Jones and yes, I would not have our knight and shining armor if we still had Seth Jones. Um I think the D has been okay. I mean, they’re not getting like caved in possession-wise. Um, I know Spencer Knight is hiding a lot of problems. Yeah. But the Hawks have a pretty decent goal differential. Um, where are they at right now? Let’s see. They’re uh they’re plus seven in goal differential. They’ve allowed 26 goals against this year. Um, which is very solid. So, I mean, yes, there’s going to be growing pains. I don’t see anything that makes me think, “Oh boy, we need to really reconsider this plan of letting these young defenseman play.” Yeah, I I think the I I I think Spencer Knight and Arvid Slaughter’s play definitely makes up for a lot of it when you look at the numbers, goals allowed and everything, but Hawks are the fourth fewest goals against in the league. Yeah, I I think a lot of that you go to you go to Spencer Knight, but they’re 21st in the league in in shots against per game, which it’s not great, but that’s a lot better than being in the bottom three what they were last season. Um, you know, I I I think the defensive group, it’s it’s a learning process from the veterans, Vic, Murphy, Grizzlick, they’ve been fine. the young guys are are they they’ve had moments of like really good play like from Krevier and and Ka Kaiser especially like he if you any defenseman you want to give an A2 to through the first 10 games it’s Wyatt Kaiser he’s he’s he’s definitely leading uh you know the leader in the clubhouse early this season of best defenseman as far as impact on the ice Matt Grizzlick’s been found money really yeah and he’s like a analytics darling yeah but he’s But for a million bucks, you could do a lot worse for defenseman. Um, and then yeah, Renal and Levinov, they’ve been growing. They’ve had some rough spots, but they’ve also had some good spots. I think you continue rolling with that. Right now, Tony Granado said the worst player grade he’d give out was maybe a B minus. I’ll take that. For if a full season, the worst player grade you’re giving out is a B minus. That’s a win. So I I I think early on the defense as a whole has been asen moments of good, some moments of bad, but I think the moments of good outweigh the bad. So before last night’s game, Spencer Knight was saving like 1.3 goals above expected per game. Yeah. So I’m just going to go ahead and say if we add a goal against a game for the Hawks, they would allow 36 goal. They would have allowed 36 goals this year. that would have them with Toronto, LA, uh, right behind the Oilers. So, like 24th, 23rd in the league, which if I told you 10 games into the year, they’re going to have they’re, you know, they’re not going to be at the in the bottom five, you’d probably be pretty pleased with that. Yeah. Um, so yes, you got to give a lot of that credit to Spencer Knight, but still even if you just even if he was just playing as expected, if both goalies were playing as expected, they’d be, you know, bottom middle of the league, which is better than than expected. So, and look, you still have Renzel really raw, Levy raw. As those guys get more and more games under their belt, get more comfortable, start finding their rhythms, that’s going to get cleaned up a little bit. As they learn Jeff Flashel system and get more comfortable in it, that’s going to grow a little bit. So, I think it’s going to get better. I I think, you know, you can go through all the analytics and find some things to concern you if you want, but you shouldn’t cuz it is a way better start than anyone imagined. And I’ll just tell you this, trust your eyes. Trust what you’re seeing. you know, like they are playing well. They are like they were beating the hell out of Ottawa in the first period last night and then the second got away again. They overcame it. Won the game 7-3, right? Like it’s okay. The in the games where they really got crushed possession-wise, Florida and Utah. Florida beat him by one on a weird like late Jesper Bulkas goal. hit him in the stomach. And then uh Utah, they beat Mhm. in a game that wasn’t great. Yeah. So, they’re okay. I I think it’s been I think everything has been better than expected. I think that’s a a fair a fair assessment. All right, we’re going to wrap things up. We are back uh tomorrow night, postgame, Hawks and Jets. Pregame at 6:30. Uh 7:00 puck drop. First time Jonathan TA faces his old team, but it’ll be in his hometown of Quinnipga. Quinnipeg. That’ll be a lot of fun. Looking forward to that. And this is a really good test for the Blackhawks. Yes, the Jets are a really good team. Uh, so this this is a this is a a matchup of PDO machines. Yes, it is. Two of the top three PDO teams in the league face each other. Uh, something’s got to give, as one Pat Foley used to say. We will see. Join us tomorrow 6:30 pregame and full postgame when the game’s over. We’ll talk to you then on the CHGO Blackhawks podcast. I won't stand for opossum slander especially with how good they are for the ecosystem
Its the downright delusional hate that bedard gets, we see and get, that no one in Chicago gives to celebrini.. we aren’t sitting here calling your players busts or talking about how much “glaze” is going on..
I do not see Bedard making the Canadian Olympic team but I do see him making the 2028 Canadian 4 nations team.
Pietrangelo could be someone to pickup if you just need to hit the cap minimum. I doubt he is coming back and is a whopping $8.8 mil for 2 years
98mil over 8yrs (*12.25mil aav) for bedard's extension. stick to the plan, no shortcuts through a rebuild. measure twice, and cut once. think w/ your brain not w/ your heart, and just enjoy the season!!
Celebreeny who? As in who fng cares? Let the haters hate, yes I spelled his name wrong on purpose. I only care about those wearing the Indian head sweater
Yes! I also would make a case for Donato, Knight, and Crevier
I would like to offer sheet Jason Robertson. Sign one of Tuck/Kempe , Riley Smith, Ryan Reaves and on Defense sign Rasmus Anderson and Jamie Oleksiak.
I listen almost every day and generally enjoy the content but good God how can you sit there and say Bedard vs Celebrini is exhausting and then waste 15 minutes talking about it. I know it's unintentional but giving it that much time on your show just feeds into it and makes it worse. If it doesn't matter (and I agree that it doesn't matter) don't give it air.
