New Orleans Saints Shaheed, Penning Trades Make Tyler Shough’s Job HARDER, But Evaluation EASIER

It’s over at fanuel.com. The New Orleans Saints traded away one of their best offensive weapons in Rashid Jaheen and traded away their starting left guard on a struggling offensive line that in particular hasn’t always been the most stout on the interior. And I dare say that that makes their quarterback evaluation much, much easier. However, it makes Tyler Shuck’s job a little bit harder. And there’s no doubt about that. Let’s break down what I mean by that. First of all, how does it make Tyler Shuck’s job harder? A couple of different things. On the offensive line, obviously, as you get accustomed to working with certain guys, you get accustomed to the vocabulary, you get accustomed to the cadence, all these other things. So, I could see a little bit of where that could be a bit of an issue. The Saints are already with their backup center and Luke Forner. They’re going to be turning to their backup left guard and Dylan Raidens. They’ll probably be turning to their backup right tackle as well and Awesome Richards while Tales Fanga deals with his right uh excuse me, his high ankle sprain. So, the only two starters right now that potentially for this game up against the Carolina Panthers for Tyler Shuck on the offensive line are going to be rookie left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. and right guard Caesar Ruiz, the veteran. So, you got one veteran and then a bunch of either new or young guys that are going to be stepping in place uh on the starting on on the offensive line. And that presents obvious concerns, right? Communication, cadence, uh familiarity, all those other things. But I want to circle back to familiarity in a little bit when we get to evaluation. But before we do that, the trade of Rasheed Shahed obviously has a major impact as well. That’s one of the offenses top weapons on the on that side of the football. his ability down the field, his ability to find open spots in zones, his ability to be able to be that se one of those second action players that can find open areas that has the speed to lose corners that are trying to plaster while he’s running around the football field, working back to his quarterback, all those things. There were some obvious miscommunications during the scramble drill at earlier points of the season, but the scramble drill seemed to work pretty well with Tyler Shuck on Sunday up against the Los Angeles Rams. But now a major part of that is gone. Tyler, excuse me, Rasheed Shahid, having been traded to the Seattle Seahawks, that piece to the puzzle is no longer here in New Orleans. And so, that’s going to be somebody that’s going to impact a lot of different things. Your ability to be a deep threat, your ability to make safeties, play honestly, and to uh force defenses to be worried about what could happen over the top. It’s going to impact your ability in second action plays as a mobile, scrambling quarterback. It’s going to impact your ability to find open guys because you have you just lost one of the guys that can can consistently get open in zone coverage and find those soft spots in the zone. So all of those things make the job of a quarterback that much harder. You also lose one piece on your offense that you could use in a bunch of different ways from jet sweeps to end rounds to uh screens to deep passes to short and intermediate areas all these other pieces. Rashi Jahi was a usable weapon all over the offense. Even though he wasn’t always consistently utilized in all of those more gadgety ways, it was still a part of what defenses had to be ready for. You now lose that sort of quote unquote element of surprise in the offense. So those are the things that make Tyler Shook’s job a little bit harder. When you lose one of your best players on offense, it makes your job harder. That that’s that’s really the bare bones of it if we wanted to sum up the moral of the story into one sentence, if you will. But what this also does is that it makes the job of the evaluation much easier for New Orleans. Because if Tyler Shuck goes out there and looks really, really good down several pieces on the offensive line and down one of his offensive weapons, it’s going to be obvious. It’s going to be blatantly obvious that you can win with him. It’s going to become blatantly obvious that he can elevate the talent that is still there, including guys that he’s very familiar with. I mentioned the three backups on the starting offensive line. Awesome Richards at right tackle, Dylan Raidens at left guard, Luke Forner at center. Those are all guys that Tyler Shuck spent the entire beginning of the year communicating with and working with on an offensive line on the scout team. Not having a guy like Rasheed Shahed that steps up, Devon Vele in terms of his opportunities. That’s a guy that has worked with Tyler Shuck on the scouting team. So there is a little bit of a different piece of the familiarity. While Tyler Shuck is trending up in terms of his or while the familiarity for Tyler Shuck is trending up in terms of his familiarity with guys like Alvin Chimera and uh Chris Olive and uh Kelvin Banks Jr. and Caesar Ruiz and so on and so forth. Those guys that are still in that starting lineup that oh Jawan Johnson which is like familiarity that he has already even going back to his college days. the two Tyler Shuck and Joan Johnson were teammates of 2019 Oregon team. So like those guys do go back in that way, but not only does he is he trending not only is his familiarity with those pieces trending up, those that have been in the starting lineup and but then also all these other players that have kind of moved in that are now elevated in roles because of injury availability or the trade deadline. All of a sudden those guys are the players that Talshuk’s been working with all season, all throughout. So, if he looks good, it’s going to be obvious is what I’m trying to say. And if he elevates the talent around him and if he gets the things done that he needs to get done in terms of performing like a guy that is trying to prove and and is earning the 2026 starting role, there’s not going to be any questions about it. It’s going to be blatantly obvious if he works. It’s going to be blatantly obvious if he’s not the answer as well. Because if he can’t elevate that talent, then you know that there are some shortcomings that you as an as an organization can choose to want to navigate. But then there are also some shortcomings in that situation that could pan out. None yet, but that could pan out in this upcoming situation that the organization might say, you know what, he’s not the guy. Let’s go and find somebody else. And so it puts them in pretty good position to be able to evaluate with a pretty clean idea of what they’re getting out of Tyler Shuck. If Tyler Shot can elevate the talent, it becomes blatantly obvious. If he can’t elevate the talent, then you have to make the assessment, can you get him to that point, can he develop into that point? But if you’re not seeing the developmental pieces or the nuggets or the seeds that have to be there, then you know going into the offseason what you have to do and likely you’re in position to do it, which is pursue another quarterback likely with an early selection in the NFL draft. So Tyler Shuck’s job might have gotten a little might have gotten harder at the trade deadline, but the evaluation for the Saints is going to get easier and easier and easier as the season goes on, especially if Tyler Shuck is finding success. Coming up next, who’s next up at wide receiver beyond uh Devon Vele is actually pretty interesting. Let’s break that down as we continue on with today’s episode of Locked on Saints, part of Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Today’s episode of Locked on Saints is brought to you by our friends over at FanDuel. The NBA is back and there’s no better way to get in on the action. What’s up next at wide receiver is going to be a large conversation now that the New Orleans Saints have traded Rashid Shahid to the Seattle Seahawks. And while the conversation often revolves around wide receiver Devon Vele, there are still some other young pieces that the team has an opportunity to get a look at and should absolutely invest some time in. So it goes beyond just Devon at wide receiver. So I want to bring up two names in particular and both of them now have a pretty clear path to potentially having an impact with this offense and really I’ll add a bonus third in there too. So obviously veteran Brandon Cooks who the Saints brought in to be the veteran in the wide receiver room, right? It’s a very young room otherwise who signed in New Orleans with an understanding that this was going to be a team that was looking to compete with Derek Carr being his quarterback, Tyron Matthew being over on the defensive side, all that. Everything about that in terms of those expectations changed when it came to Brandon Cooks’s reality here in New Orleans. very different quarterback situation, very different team situation, very different competitive level as well. The Saints hitting at 1 and8 certainly signing with the Saints and making his return back to the team where it all started for his career back when he was drafted. That is this is not what he likely had in mind for this team through the first nine games going into the 10th game. But alas, it is the reality. And Cooks was not traded at the trade deadline. out of the three wide receivers, Crystal Lobby, Rashiche, and Brandon Cooks. I thought Cooks was going to be the most likely to get traded just out of respect, right? Like it’s the veteran respect of like, hey, you signed here with a different expectation. This team isn’t really the team that you thought you were getting, you know, getting in bed with, so here’s an opportunity for you to go and continue to compete somewhere later on in your career. And that didn’t happen. That didn’t happen either because there were no suitors. That didn’t happen either because the Saints asking price was high because they put val because they very much value Brandon Cooks or it didn’t happen because Brandon Cooks didn’t necessarily feel that he was in a situation that he didn’t want to be in. He has a really good connection with quarterback Tyler Shuck. That might be a big difference maker moving forward in terms of this ability, this team’s ability to still threaten deep. We can’t forget that Chris is absolutely still a deep threat and is a guy with worldclass speed. So knowing but you already know that he is a focal point in the passing game for this team. Leader and receive in receiving yards all those other pieces for the team already. You know that he is the feature focal point in the passing game. So there’s no big question marks around how this impacts Chris Ave. This is all great for Chris Ave in terms of having a larger role being able to do what it is that he said that he wanted to do before the season which is be more of a deep threat and it focuses all contract talks over to Chris Olive. We’ll discuss more contract stuff here in a moment as well by the way because we got some nuggets on Rashid Shahed. But for New Orleans, you know, the focus on Chris Abby is going to be there. Now, the toughest part for Chris Lab is that his friend isn’t there anymore, right? Like him and Rasheed were close and you could see on social media immediately tweeted out a frowny face, quote, tweeted Jackson Smith and Jeba, you got a good one. Like all this other stuff. So, you can see the camaraderie there. That part has to hurt, of course. But it also redefineses the standing for Chris Ave or further defines rather the standing for Chris Ave in the team atmosphere. But for Brandon Cooks, like if you need another speed guy to play the Rasheed Jah role, Brandon Cooks becomes the guy to do that. Another guy with world class speed. He still has great speed for his, you know, at this point in his career. But he’s not the only one. We saw Tyler Shuck connect with Mason Tipton on a big time deep ball in Sofi Stadium up against the Los Angeles Rams in the preseason. And there’s still a little bit of waiting for Mason Typton to take his preseason and training camp performances and translate them over to the regular season. This year, one of the big reasons why he hasn’t been able to do that is because the the opportunity just hasn’t been there. But now, if the Saints want another field stretcher, getting more opportunities and more reps, he becomes a part of that focal point as well. he becomes a part of the brigade, if you will, that can bring that along with Brandon Cooks. And then just to give you the a third option here, there’s still the possibility that Trey Palmer comes off of injured reserve at some point in the coming weeks. And if that were to happen soon, this is the perfect time for it. You’ve just opened up a roster spot. You just opened up a roster spot at the position and now you have a chance to potentially bring him back off of injured reserve and then see if he’s able to get back out on the football field. And so then he becomes another one of those speed guys. Him, um, Mason Typton, Brandon Cooks, Chris Olive, Rasheed Shahid, all had very similar qualities in terms of stature, but also in terms of speed. And so the Saints can find other ways to get the speed implemented in their offense. Will it be as effective as Rasheed Shahed? That’s going to be up to that player and his connection with the quarterback. But it’s not going to be the same as Rashid Shahid. That doesn’t mean that it can’t be positive for what this team is trying to do, which is evaluate its players. It’s not about winning football games anymore. Not in my opinion. Certainly, they they they will think differently. They have a veteran core on that team that they’re trying to win for in in certain circumstances and and compete for and all those other things. You don’t walk into NFL organization and say, “Well, we’re not competing anymore. Everybody just everybody just get ready. We’re just going out there on Sunday to have fun.” Like, nobody’s doing that in the NFL. And so I don’t mean to say that from a lack of desire standpoint for New Orleans, but like to a certain extent some things at this point in the year have become more important than stacking wins and worsening your draft position, right? And so you’re not actively trying to lose games, but you’re actively more focused potentially on some of these young talent players that you can now get involved. And the Saints have several of those players that can now get involved. And then of course there is Devon Vele still, right? the big-bodied speedy guy. People never talk about his speed. 447 speed. He’s got it. 27 years old, but only his second year in the NFL. That’s why Kell Moore refers to him as a young player. But there’s also guys like Trey Palmer, Mason Tipton when he’s referring to young pieces. Uh, and so there’s all of those speedy guys, but then there’s also this big-bodied guy out there that you got to get involved in your offense more, particularly in the red zone, short yardage situations, quick slants, all those other things. So, I’ll be very interested to see if the Saints finally figure out and dig out a feature role for Devon Vele where he becomes a part of not just somebody that sees the field every now and then, but he becomes a major part of the target chair for Tyler Shuck and this New Orleans Saints team. So, the last thing that I wanted to talk about here was the contract situation. Obviously, with Rasheed Shahi having been traded away on an expiring deal, the Saints no longer have to worry about that extension conversation, which means they can focus at the position at least all of their extension conversations on Chris Olive, a guy that they have actively been in those conversations with or whose people he they have actively been in conversations with. And so that’s worth highlighting is that now you you kind of narrow the focus because the Chris Ave deal was going to have to settle in first before you could go over to the Rashid Shahed deal. But the tricky part about that is that Chris Lavi’s got another year ahead because of the fifth year option. And so the timing might not have worked out and all these other things. And had Rashid Shahed been offered a better opportunity elsewhere, there could have been a reality in which he took that deal and that would have left the Saints hanging with a compensatory selection that doesn’t settle in until 2027 and that they could potentially cancel out even with a lesser level signing or a lower level signing. And so now at least you’re guaranteed the draft position and the draft uh compensation that you’re getting with having traded him to the Seattle Seahawks. And so it narrows the focus of the conversation around contracts, financials, spending, all those other things which the Saints aren’t in a really good position to do going into next season. Uh but it does also help a little bit in terms of what that trade compensation might have been had contract talks not gone to a place that would have led to Rashid Ji coming back because that was no guarantee. Uh not because Rashid Jahi didn’t like it in New Orleans, but because there was always the opportunity to get a better opportunity somewhere else or a better pay somewhere else, all those other things. You know how these contract negotiations work. And so with all of that, uh, that’s another big big maybe plus to how the Saints manage this is that now they can focus their conversations solely on Chris Lab when it comes to extensions and they locked in effectively that um, trade compensation that that that compensation they got for losing Rash Heat. All right, coming up next, the New Orleans Saints might have traded away an offensive lineman, but it’s possible that their offensive line just got better. We got all that coming up for you next as we continue on with today’s episode of Locked on Saints, part of a locked on podcast network, your team every day. And make sure you use that link so they know that we sent you. Let’s get it. Who that nation? And the New Orleans Saints might have traded away a starting offensive lineman and Trevor Penning, but there’s a chance their offensive line might have actually gotten better. The New Orleans Saints moved Trevor Penning to the Los Angeles Chargers, a team in absolute desperation when it comes to protecting its quarterback on the offensive line, dealing with the Joe Alt injury, another injury at tackle, other question marks along the offensive line, future question marks on the offensive line in terms of retaining players on the interior, so on and so forth. And they got very little in return. A 2027 sixthround pick. I’ve learned that people believe that that’s a pretty good return for uh for Trevor Penning. I think when you’re going up in to the point up all the way down to the trade deadline moments before the trade deadline hit with a desperate team that you probably should take that desperate team for a little bit more than they wanted to offer. But say Lav it is what the New Orleans Saints got. More importantly though, the impact on the offensive line could go one of two ways. The fact of the matter is that they traded away a starting offensive lineman. And when you trade away to starting offensive line when you’re already down a starting center and you’re potentially down for at least maybe one week maybe Kell Moore called the Talasi Wanga injury uh the high ankle sprain high ankle injury a week toe situation so we’ll see how long that takes. Uh Caesar Ruiz was supposed to be out for four to six weeks with his ankle injury. He missed a game. So we’ll see where things go. But with three starting offensive linemen potentially down going up against the Carolina Panthers, it’s easy to say, “Well, Ross, obviously the offensive line gets worse because of that, which might be true.” However, I I do think that there is also a world in which your offensive line got better without Trevor Penning. Trevor Penning struggled against a lot of different things on the interior. Stunts, twist, uh managing that type of communication, motion on the line after the snap, all those other things. Those are areas where he struggled. And there were a lot of times where you saw at the end of the play the continued sort of trajectory for him has always been ending the play on his backside on the ground. And that continued here throughout the 2025 season. He was not a liability. He was not bad. He was not any of those things. He actually we didn’t talk about him much, which is a good thing for an interior offensive line player, but there were a lot of those different things that he struggled with uh on in in protection that he has struggled with throughout his career. moves the inside shoulder by speed guys. Okay, moving to the interior where he doesn’t have to deal with that as much. But now the communication of or the the the negotiation of who do I take switches, stunts, twists, all those other things, who’s my responsibility, what do I do? Those things gave him a really really uh rough time. So for New Orleans to now be able to go back to Dylan Raidens, who I thought performed very well at left guard, he obviously performed very poorly in the preseason when they ended up having to start him at one of the tackle positions, but playing on the interior where he’s comfortable, he played very well. This is a guy that was a 15game starter at right guard last year for the Tennessee Titans. Now he plugs in ready to go for the Saints at left guard this year. So, we’ll see exactly how everything pans out over the course of these final eight games of the season, but I do think that there’s a world in which this offensive line gets better with Dylan Raidens, who seems to be a little bit of a better communicator, seems to handle those types of stunts, twists, things like that a little bit better, and seems to be a better asset for the Saints in the run game as well. Now, if we take a look at the first three games of the season when Dylan Raidens was in in place of Trevor Penning, who started the season injured up against the Arizona Cardinals, Saints ran for 107 yards. Up against the San Francisco 49ers, the Saints ran for 121 yards. That was against the 12th and 15th ranked defenses respectively so far uh this season. And that’s up to this point in the season. And so then the Saints transitioned back over to Trevor Penning once he was healthy enough to go as a starter against Buffalo in a game where the Saints ran for 189 yards, their best mark for many, many, you know, for a long time, uh, many, many weeks and their best mark of the season so far. That was against the 28th ranked rushing defense, currently ranked, the 28th rushing defense in the NFL. It was actually ranked at the time either the worst or second worst rushing defense in the NFL in Buffalo. And so for New Orleans, those are their three games so far this season in which they rushed for over 100 yards as a team. Five straight games they have not been able to eclipse that mark. And on top of that, Trevor Pitting was on the field for six has been on the field for the last six games. And so maybe there’s a correlation there. Maybe there’s a causation there that led to the New Orleans Saints making this decision. I think I mentioned this in the live episode, but I asked um Kell Moore on Monday what, you know, stands out to him about sort of the the shortcomings in the run game over the course of the past 5 weeks, and he kind of listed a couple different things, but then he specifically listed out blocking. When I asked about protection being an issue for him, he mentioned that as an offensive line, you have to operate as a unit. there’s one player that doesn’t hit their assignment or doesn’t do what they need to do. I’m paraphrasing, but but basically he said, you know, it’s it has to operate as a unit. If one piece isn’t doing what they’re supposed to do, doesn’t find success, whatever it might be, then the entire plan falls apart and then you’re not able to execute the way that you need to execute. And then the next day at the trade deadline, Trevor Pinning gets traded away and you now have the opportunity to go back to a guy like Dylan Raidens who seemed to outperform Trevor Pinning at his position to start the season. One and one make two. And so if that is truly the case, if the Saints did trade Trevor Penning away for a 2027 sixround pick because they wanted to get something in return from him, but knew that he wasn’t a part of their future plan, then bravo. Bravo to New Orleans for being able to get that done. But now we will see whether or not this offensive line gets better without Trevor Penning in the lineup. Does Dylan Raidens do a better job as a run blocker to open up more opportunities for this run game which desperately needs to get going, especially with a rookie quarterback? Is the communication better? Is the handling of stunts, twists, things like that better? Now, that’s going to be tough to judge because you’re also down a starting a center and you might be down a starting right tackle as well, but this could actually be the thing in the long run that helps the New Orleans Saints offensive line. However, they should abandon their approach of drafting first round offensive linemen. Let it end with Calvin Banks on a high note and then begin to re-evaluate that process and reinvest in that offensive line elsewhere because that ain’t working. 1. I was just thinking about your final comments Ross, and it could be a matter of Pennington not being a good fit for the blocking scheme Moore wants to use… There are 2 types of OL… Those more suitable for a power blocking scheme, and those more suited for a zone blocking scheme… Guys in a ZBS need quicker feet, a higher IQ and need to be more athletic…

Alex Gibbs is considered the founder of the modern zone blocking scheme, as he perfected and popularized it in the NFL. Other notable figures include Mike Shanahan, who built on Gibbs's work and is the namesake of the "Shanahan" zone scheme, and Kirk Ferentz, who is credited with creating the zone run concept in college football.

Vince Lombardi used principles similar to zone blocking, though he called it "area blocking," and based the fundamentals of his offense on this technique. Vince designed the famous Lombardi Sweep to counter Tom Landry's 4-3 flex defense…

  2. Cesar Ruiz is a lot worse than Penning he had no work first season apart of one season @ LT one season @ RT now apart of this season @ LG Ruiz 5 seasons @ RG and is getting worse every year

  3. I've emotionally detached from this season of Saints football. We need a difference maker at QB, WR and TE. Nothing against Shough or Rattler, both can be serviceable NFL QBs in due time. But I don't see either of them becoming a championship, QB that teams fear. Is Mendoza that guy, no clue. But I look forward to May to find out.

  4. The Penning trade is not a big deal. The fact that he could only draw a late pick 2 years from now should tell you what he's worth. Shaheed is a loss, but only a little. He can be a big playmaker a couple times a game, but not able to make YAC or be a game changer on bread and butter 5-20 yard passes. This will open an opportunity to evaluate Vele and Tipton more who are both salary-cap friendly. And they received decent draft capital for Shaheed. Is what it is. At least the front office is handling this like a bit more like a true rebuild.

  5. I think this is a good thing. Acknowledge your busts on the roster. Create space for younger talent where needed and DO NOT pay premium price for anyone right now. All of the sudden were talking Cooks at 3, Olave at 2 and mystery guy at 1. Because I think even Kellen has now Acknowledged Olave is not a 1 WR.

  6. Shallow analysis! If Shough does well without Shaheed then he's worth keeping, if he doesn't, it proves nothing. It just leaves one with the question that if Shough had some decent weapons he might have broke thru. Saints should have traded Olave. Unfortunately, he's one concussion away from retirement. Shaheed had the ability to take the top off the defense. (4.3/40)! Not to mention his ability to run back punts/kickoffs, means you just lost two positions with the trade. The idea you might not be able to sign him next year is stupid. You pay guys like that! They're rare!!

  7. There’s no hope for the New Orleans Saints every time they get into the trade market they trade the wrong guy I mean Shaheed and they always trade for picks in the next draft but when the draft come up, they will pick shit so you lost on that trade it always happens. Trading Penning was good because he is a flag guy they want get nothing from his trade either. They will pick somebody in the draft that’s hurt. I just got over a injury. I guarantee you that just like they did with Shough they went up in the trade to get him and put him on the shelf like a trophy. The Saints is a joke from year out to year in. They need to get rid of that coach and Mickey Loom until you see the real problem you gonna be the same organization

  8. Moore is just fixing what was broken. Most of them are DA guys … Shaheed is a big lost but the others always were below average. If Trevor was getting beat at LT and LG what good is he?

  9. This sounds like 2026 preseason….weeks and weeks of experimental football. Going into next season, adding a couple of draft picks, free agents and trades, hopefully the coaching gets better and find some plays that work with the personnel.

  10. The only thing wrong with the trade deadline was how many players they didn't trade for picks. Either they couldn't or wouldn't accept what the market was offering at this point.

Either way, the Saints still have a lot of work to do this off-season with trades and or cuts to clean up the mess. I just hope your incompetent owner realizes that she needs to replace Loomis as well before any other decisions are made. That should be her next move. Just saying.

  11. Shit we will have a top 5 pick if not 1 what more do y'all want, rookies don't win in this league, look at the falcons they got the best players for 4 years straight and has a losing record for 8 straight seasons, last not be a$$ like that

  12. Ross, was it hard for Spencer Rattler when he was thrown in a very bad situaction as a rookie QB, YES. Was Spener Rattler held accountable for the 6 game loss he had with that very bad team as a rookie QB. YES. Tyler Shough has it a lot better than Spencer Rattler had it when he was a rookie QB. Spencer Rattler had a very bad coaching staff, a few starters on the football field, if any, no starting offensive linemen, no starting running back, no starting receivers and no starting defensive players. "It's gotten harder for Tyler Shough", he lost a receiver that was not the #1 receiver and a lineman that was not all that great. Let Tyler Shough get rated on his performance on the football field and you guys stop trying to hype him up, every chance you get. When all of this crap is done, I hope Rattler finds a home where his career can shine in the NFL, because the Saints is not that team. Just A Fan Keeping It Real.
