🔴LIVE 🔴Milwaukee Brewers VS Chicago Cubs / August 18/ Baseball Envivo/MLB THE SHOW 25

Oops. First pitch coming your way next. Just about ready to roll here. And today on the hill, Javier Assad and Singi. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. Oh, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. There’s something about pulling one down the line and shooting it through the infield that’s just so satisfying as a hitter. It’s just fun turning on a pitch like he did right there. Now the number two hitter. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Assad. 27 years old and he’s a native of Mexico. [Music] Next offering is fouled back. Foul ball still 0 and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. kicks and deals spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another ball. One there. [Music] Ruer at first with no outs here. Next pitch misses. Two balls, two strikes. That’s a good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and in just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Punch him out on the ground to the left and it stays fair. Lead runner touches second. Headed for third. Monisterio coming home. He scores and they have the lead. Well done. Drives in the run. There was nothing cheap about the way he got that one through the infield. That was ripped. Caught out in front and didn’t get under it like he would have liked, but definitely put a good swing on it. And now it’s William Contrarus. He’s a catcher by trade, but the DH here in this one. Tap foul at the plate. And that’s outside. Runner at second. Nobody out. The 1-1 is fouled off. [Music] One, two to Contrarus. Got him looking. He’s got to be frustrated with that call. Wow. That’s a tough call for the hitter, but the pitcher will take that all day long. Not quite in the strike zone, but he found a spot that the umpire is going to, at least for now, allow him to get that call. So, hitters are going to have to make an adjustment, but pitchers are going to learn from those things and really try to exploit him if they can. Yelli stepping into the box now. First pitch just misses. One out and a runner at second. [Applause] Swing and a miss. And that one missed by a ton. [Applause] Good. And that one is downstairs. Full countdown. punch him out and ball four two aboard. Well, they didn’t give him anything to hit and now with runners on first and second, they’ve set up a double play opportunity. So, not a terrible result. Andrew Vaughn now and the first pitch misses for ball one. At this point, the clean inning is over. Got to settle in, focus on the hitter, and get out of it with minimal damage. It’s great to get on the board in the first frame of the ball game, but here’s an opportunity for them to really open things up with a couple of runners on. Let’s see if they can cash in. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. Well, they’re really running up the pitch count in this first inning. Lots of confidence from this team that is perhaps the hottest in baseball right now. One out, runners at first and second. sets him down looking. Went back to the cutter and it was worthwhile. Well, getting a good look at the pitcher here in the first inning isn’t a bad thing. I know he struck out, but you can live with that as long as the other hitters in this lineup can learn something from it. At the plate, Blake Perkins, first pitch misses. Hammered base hit. Rounds third headed for the plate now. A long throw home. Safe and the runner from second scores on the play and they take a two-run lead. Comes through with the RBI. Got a fast ball middle of the plate. Jumped all over it. Absolutely smoked that ball. Now it’s Jance in the head. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. First offering and it just misses. Two on, two outs. And that one lifted in the air center field. Cro Armstrong makes the play. And that is that. But two runs for him and they jump ahead onto the bottom of the first. It’s the Brewers two and the Cubs nothing. Back here with my pal Singi. And on the hill, a soft tossing lefty just like you, Chris. Jose Kintana. Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club. And coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. Bottom of the first. So, up now for Chicago. Michael Bush and ball one. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. Outside low now two and 0 right now behind in the count. Two balls and no strikes. No free passes. You can’t allow that. Next one misses and it’s three and0. All I would expect in this three 0 count, you’re taking all the way. See if he’ll walk you. Fast ball for a strike. Three and one. Well, as a hitter, you’re hoping that the command on that sinker doesn’t come until later in the ball game. But if that’s how it’s going to be all day, it’s going to be a tough one for the offense. This one looks like trouble. Now he’ll turn for second and he’s got a leadoff double. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Absolutely punished that pitch. Wasn’t fooled in the slightest. 109 off the bat. I think that means you put a pretty good swing on it. [Applause] So, here’s Kyle Tucker now. It’s been a tough stretch for him at the plate under the Mendoza line so far this month. And that drops in for a strike. and one. Bush leads off second with nobody out. Swinging a foul straight back. [Music] gets a piece and it stays 0 and2. [Applause] Just missed. Excellent arm action on that two strike change up. Just missed. Man, he wanted that call. [Applause] MVP stays alive. Eighth pitch of the at bat coming up inside and that’s ball two. Still just the second batter of the inning and on the mound he’s already thrown 13 pitches. They got him working hard out there. Two two now. Hard hit right side. He’ll do it himself. So, it was a long battle at the plate, but they still managed to get the out. Time now for the Chicago Cubs lineup. One guy leading the way offensively for this club right now, Seiya Suzuki. And Boo, he’s a big time run producer for these guys, man. Leading the team in homers, runs batted in, doing damage on the regular, man. Making opposing pitchers just sweat out there. It’s kind of fun to watch. Get ready for a show when he steps into the box. Smoked on the ground to second in time. Devon now two away as they get a run across. So now it’s the fourhole hitter Pete Crow Armstrong. He set a new career high in home runs this year. And Singi, he’s just trying to set the bar as high as possible now. Oh, look at the stop. The throw. Nicely done for the out. So, it’s one run, one hit, no errors, no one left. Second inning coming up here at Wrigley. It’s the Brewers two and the Cubs won. And we’re back. New inning getting started up now for Milwaukee. Joseph Ortiz Assad back to work with a short stop. Takes a ball. Next offering is in for a strike. Clyde Washington with home plate duties in this one. Little bit of a low zone boo from Clyde. Nothing crazy though. pitchers that work consistently down around the knees and are able to command their offspe stuff tend to have some pretty good success with him back there behind the plate. What about an umpire’s height? How much of a role does that play in your experience and what the strike zone is like? Yeah, I think it pushes the strike zone up a little bit, which you know, as a former hitter, you like that. You wanted the ball up. You didn’t want to have to deal with stuff down in the zone consistently. saying he wasn’t very sharp in the first. Got hit around a little bit. Just wasn’t able to locate particularly well. A lot of stuff at the fat part of the plate. Yeah, Boo. He wasn’t fooling anyone. It’s a tough place to be cuz it’s not always obvious what adjustments need to be made. Sometimes it’s location. Sometimes it’s being too predictable. Sometimes you’re tipping your pitches. He’s going to need to figure it out quickly, though. That cutter right there had just enough movement on it to get the swing and miss. Wasn’t a great location by any means. That’s typically a spot that hitters can handle. So, I’d say he fooled him with just enough of that late action. Next for Milwaukee, Brandon Lockage. That one’s in there. And that’s strike one. One out. Base is empty. And that misses. And that is ball one. There’s a strike and that’s off the inside edge. And the count now even up. That one called just inside I think. and on the mound. He’s trying to get a little bit of an explanation. Doesn’t seem to be too bothered by it, though. But he clearly thought it clipped the corner. 3-2 now. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. So, the batting order turns over. Next for the Brewers, Andrew Monasterio. One for one with a single and a run scored so far. Milwaukee. And that’s outside. Ball one. Two out. Base is empty. That one outside. And it’s two and 0. And that is out of play. That one missing inside outside and it’s ball four. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Number 21 stands in with two away as he takes a ball [Music] up and in. And that’s ball two. Looks like he’s being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up. doesn’t want to make another mistake. And that’s in for a strike. And it’s two and one now. Swing and a miss as he was late. This one in the air. BCH gets under it, drops into the glove, and that is that. Brewers strand one. They lead it 2-1. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. And now the catcher comes up to him. Carson Kelly. Let’s go. And that’s through there for a strike. It’s 0 and one. liner and this could be trouble around first and hustling for second and he’s there with a leadoff double. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. [Applause] Ian Hap up to hit the half daddy. What’s going right through there for a strike? Cubs made Ian Hap a first round pick in 2015. He played at the University of Cincinnati as an infielder. played a little bit of outfield, but a guy in 2022. What a year, Chris. Both an all-star and a gold glover. And there’s a foul ball. Yeah. And wins that gold glove as a left fielder. And it’s a guy that was a pretty good center fielder as well. But, you know, one of the things for him is just being able to be in the same spot every day. I think it increases the comfort level and allows that athletic ability to really shine. cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this, known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. So, here’s her now. Yeah, let’s go. Let’s go. That’s the third. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Gets off a throw. Save. It was never going to be easy after the misplay. The short stop. Dansby Swanson. And now it’s Dansby Swanson. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season. So, they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level for him right now at the plate. It’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed in there at the knees. Really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count. He’s going to have to continue finish off this hitter. Kelly the lead runner out at second. Horner at first. One gone. Fights it off. He’ll see another. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Next pitch misses way outside. [Music] on the ground right side. Four, six, three. It’s a double play and that’ll do it for the inning. Well, the second baseman made that one look easy. Great feed to the shortstop. Shortstop completes the play. They get out of a jam and they end the inning. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now it’s the DH William Contras and a fast ball misses outside for a ball and it’s one and0. Well, these Brewers showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. Here’s a 2- 0 and another ball. Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game. And there’s the automatic. fouls one away and now three and two. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. And there’s a base hit. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Showed a lot of fight with two strikes in that AB. Didn’t get cheated on that swing and squared it up perfectly. Came off the bat at 111. And when that’s the case, the odds are very much in your favor as a hitter. And now it’s Christian Yelich. Worked a walk in his first trip to the plate. Runner on the go into center and a base hit. Rudder stops at second and the first two reach to start the inning. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. I could watch base hits like that one all day long and so could every hitting coach in the league. Just a nice line drive into center field. Up now for Milwaukee. Andrew Vaughn went down on strikes his first time through. This one popped up and the infield fly rule called though Chris through the early stages he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. Blake Perkins will hit next. Singled and drove in a run his first time through. [Music] Always tough to turn two on a speedster like this. It’s even harder with him coming out of the left-handed batters box. You really need something to hit hard on the ground that they can handle to turn too quickly. And fouled off. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. Swings and misses. Struck him out. Nothing happening on the bases though. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breathes a sigh of relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance. Get him out of there and deal with the next guy. Danny Jansen to hit here. He’s 0 for one. [Music] First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Two outs. [Applause] That misses the zone and it’s two and one. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. Come on. That misses the zone. Three and one. Joseph Ortiz up next for the Brewers. [Music] And that’ll load the bases. Well, the stage has been set for this offense. Boo. It’s all about creating opportunities and this is one of them right here. And the batter will be the shortstop, Joseph Ortiz. And that’s in there for strike one. Tough situation right here. So important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there. left swinging a foul out of play. He’s dealing with a great two- strike hitter right here. The strikeout is not automatic. 0 and two now with a short stop. Takes a ball. Movement in the bullpen. Shota Imanaga up and throwing for manager Craig Council. Brazier warming up as well. There’s nowhere to put [Applause] him down and a swing and a miss. So he picks up his sixth strike out of the ball game. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. Back here at the friendly confines as we go to the last of the third. So up now for Chicago, Matt Shaw. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Next offering is fouled back. Swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. And now let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. Michael Bush, the next Cub to hit. Tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. [Music] Step off, throw to first and he’s back in there. [Applause] Grounder might be two. One at second out of two. Oh man. What a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Kyle Tucker. Here’s Kyle Tucker 0 for one. He grounded out to first his last time. Just missed. Next pitch is outside. Tapped in front of the plate. The underhand flip and very nicely done for the out. One hit in the inning, but no one left. Three innings complete. It’s the Brewers two and the Cubs one. Back here at Wrigley Field, John Shambi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Brandon Lockidge. and a foul ball. Lockage in his rookie season, 27 years old and he was a fifthround pick back in 2018. That’s off the inside corner and that’s ball one. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field. Got it. Really had to move for that catch. And there’s one down. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Monisterio in the box now. No balls in a strike. That one finds the corner and that is strike two. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. Battling here as he fouls it away. Base is empty, one away. Top half of inning number four. Next pitch, not close. Up high. Sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Up next for Milwaukee. Here comes the manager out of the Cubs dugout and he will make a move to the pen. Javier Assad out of the game and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Now pitching. Here comes a new arm for the Cubs. Shota Imanaga. This southpaw has been really good against left-handed hitters. One down. Here’s the second base. Right through there for a strike. Monisterio leads off first with one away. That one fouled off. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. And that’s downed away. Slow roller to third. Shaw offbalance feed. There’s one to first. Not in time. Great effort there. William Contras up now for the Brewers. One for two. And that is in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. One ball. One strike. There’s a strike. A one-two count. And all he’s seen is fast balls. You’ve got to expect something off speed. Stay back. Two outs. Swing and a miss. And he got him. Third out. That ends the frame. Milwaukee leaves one, but they still lead it two to one. Bottom of the fourth. Now it’s the right fielder, Seya Suzuki. Oh, here’s a fun fact for you, Boo. Suzuki is the first Japanese-born player to homer in three consecutive play. Now, this one is hammered way back there on its way and gone. And we are tied. A massive home run. his 28th home run of the season. And we’re all square. It’s 2-2. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat. Boo. Aggressive. And it paid off. Love to see a hitter aggressive on the first pitch of an at bat. You watch him from the on deck circle. So when you step in the box, you’re ready to pull the trigger wherever it’s at. Really good job by the hitter. Total conviction on that swing. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. So, now it’s the Cubs hitter in the four hole, Pete Crow Armstrong. Foul ball there. Always exciting to see a laid-off home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. That’s the third. In time Devon, one out in the bottom of the fourth. It’s a good recovery though after giving up the home run, not allowing it to stay in the head, but going to work at the next hitter. And a tough one at that. And now the batter is Carson Kelly. Doubled his first time up and that is downstairs. And that’s ball one. [Applause] It’s in and out of his glove. Still fires to first and they get him. The misplay made it a bit messy, but they clean things up for the out. Leftielder Ian. So up next, Ian Hat. His first at bat was a strike out. ripped on the ground to second to first and that is the inning. Cubs get one on the solo shot and we’re deadlocked now at two apiece. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show on the north side of Chicago. John Shami and Chris Singleton. Here’s the left fielder, Christian Yelich. Shota back to work. Swings and chases a low one there. Well, these Brewers looking to string together better at bats when they have runners on, but it just hasn’t happened for him yet. They only have one hit with runners in scoring position, so a lot of squandered opportunities. It’s tough because those are moments you just can’t get back. 1-1 now. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Hats and misses. It’s a strikeout. Next for Milwaukee, Andrew Vaughn. 0 for two in this one. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Next offering is fouled back. Strike him out. Foul ball. Still 0 and two. And he hits a ground ball right side and foul ball. All tied up. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Fans. Another. And that’s three straight strikeouts. Blake Perkins up now for the Brewers. Struck out on just three pitches last time. That’s in there. Going one. Cubs. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. He finds himself in a tough situation early. Just got to try to simplify it. Take a knock the other way if you can. swings and misses and he strikes out the side in the fifth. Offense held in check there. Home half of the fifth coming up. We are tied 2-2 here at Wrigley Field. Bottom of the inning. Nico her will come up to hit. Chris, baseball today, so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers, but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. Lifted in the air right field. Lockage makes the catch. One up, one down. Now batting short stop and here comes Dansby Swanson 0 for one so far. You talk about elite defensive players especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list. Just missed and you played behind guys and they loved having your speed out there defensively. One of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind him. Now he breaks his bat over to first and Swanson is set down. Got to feel pretty good for the pitcher. Absolutely saw him off. Bat explodes and then he makes an easy play on it. Pretty satisfying if you’re out there on the ball. Matt Shaw getting ready to hit. One for one with a single so far. Clips the outside corner. Strike one. Hug. And the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump. And defense shouldn’t either. Hitting wise, you can struggle. You can lose your mechanics, but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented. in that way. And this is what this guy does. The one-1 is fouled off. This one chopped up the middle. Come on. That’s the third out. And the Cubs are down in order. Score remains 2-2. And we’re back. All set for the start of the inning. Here’s the Brewers catcher now, Danny Jansen. That one misses. And that is ball one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Caleb Thebar getting loose out there. Rogers getting cranked up as well. fouled off. He was late. [Music] Swinging a foul straight back. [Music] bows it back with two strikes. Strike him out. Fights that one away. Still one and two. [Music] That was the sweeper, but it missed. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. Take him out. Another one. That’s five straight strikeouts. Well, right now he’s in cruise control, autopilot, just dominating these hitters. I mean, doesn’t look like it’s a fun at bat. And all of a sudden, you become in awe of this guy on the mound. Somebody’s got to break this thing up. That’s five straight strikeouts. Got to put a ball in play. Ortiz stands in now and watches strike one. This guy is just filling up the strike zone right now. Don’t want to get yourself in an O2 hole. You better be ready to pull the trigger on the first pitch. Hit in the air out to center field. Cro Armstrong hauls it in for the out and there’s two down. Now batting right Brandon Lockidge now at the plate. He’s one of the faster guys just by pure sprint speed in the majors. Here we go. And the first pitch misses for ball one to the right side. and he can’t come up with it. Still able to fire over. Third out. Nothing doing for the offense that time. Top of the order. Do up in the home half of the six. We are tied 2-2. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the sixth inning. And here’s the first baseman, Michael Bush. That’s in there. That’s strike one. You know, these Cubs, as this game goes on, have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’ve been chasing pitches outside the zone all game, and it’s led to some frustrating moments. They’ve been fooled quite a bit today. That misses. It’s a ball in two strikes. Here we go. Line drive and that should be extra bases. Makes the turn and heads for second in safely with a leadoff double. Go ahead runs in scoring position. Good two strike hitting right there. Boo. A bit of a lost start for some. So that was nicely done to beat the odds. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. A chance now to take the lead and at this point in the game that could be a deciding run. Now here is Kyle Tucker. That one is absolutely belted. That’s back. And that one’s gone into the bleachers. A soaring shot to center. His 19th home run of the year. It’s 42. Listen to these fans. This place is absolutely buzzing right now. You can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast booth. With a low 90s fast, you have to live on the edges and hit your spots. If you don’t, you’ll get hit hard. Really good swing there. patient and waited for it. It was like BP all over again. Here comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Jose Kintana done for the night and he’s not going to be happy with himself. New pitcher on the mound in a moment. [Applause] And we’ve got ourselves a pitching change. Jacob Miserowski just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. There we go. Seiya Suzuki the next to hit. He’s already homerred here in this one. That one ripped. Yell moving back for it. And it’s into the bleachers. Out of here. They do it again. Backto back homers. His second home run of the game. And they tack on to their lead. It’s 52. They wasted no time in that at bat. Swinging at the first pitch and he punished it. [Applause] Welcome to the game. First pitch out of the bullpen, a tough one. And you know, he’s just trying to get one in there for a strike. And on the other side is a hitter. It’s a great time to be aggressive and let it fly. It’s not what they were looking for when they turned to him, but now he’s got to find a way to reset. And now the center fielder Pete Crow Armstrong. He’s grounded out a couple of times outside. Ball one. Not a lot of people know this, but this isn’t the only Wrigley Field in MLB history. You know, when the league expanded and added the Los Angeles Angels in 1961, they played their first season at a stadium in LA called Wrigley Field, which had been the home of the minor league team of the same name. Sliced hard but foul. [Applause] And there’s a ball. Activity in the bullpen for the Brewers. Shelby Miller up and loosening in the pen. Preer also getting ready. just missed. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. Hit in the air center field. Perkins sizes this one up, makes the catch, and there’s one gone. Now batting catcher Carson. And here is Carson Kelly. They had a strike right through there. That one in triple digits. swing and a miss as he was out front. Still only one out here in the inning. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Well, clearly just anxious right there and understandably so. on an 02 count, you feel like you’ve got a lot of plate to cover and you don’t want to strike out and you end up striking out. That’s just one of those pitches where it’s not over the plate, but because you committed to it as it was leaving his hand, by the time you realized it wasn’t going to be in the zone, it’s too late to hold up your swing. Swing and a foul back and that’s out of play. [Music] Two down to that one at triple digits. [Applause] That’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind in the count. And a swing and a miss. And that’s that. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now 52. You’re dialed into the show now. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound. Caleb Thebar hasn’t pitched in the last three days. Thear [Applause] and now Andrew Monisterio. The Brewers in striking distance but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laidoff man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. On the outside corner for a strike. It’s 0 and one. The bar in his seventh season, 38 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. And a curve is down and in. Got him looking for the K. That was pretty nasty. Oh, just a beautiful fast ball on the inside corner for that backwards K right there. I think the hitter saw it all the way coming from that opposite arm angle. So, I got to think he was looking away and just got locked up by the heart stop boring in on his hands. Now it’s the second baseman. There’s the strike of the knees. Base is empty, one away here in the top half of inning number seven. And that one misses up and in. One and one. [Music] Gets under it and pops it up. Kelly makes the grab for the second out. Well, he gave the bunt a shot there, but not able to execute. Yeah, I think he rushed it a little bit. And when guys rush, can be a popup or can be bunted right back at a position player. Contras the next to hit, takes ball one. [Music] Next offering is in for a strike. Just missed. [Music] Swing and a miss. And it’s two and two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Up the middle on the run. Throw to first on the money. Nice play. Gone in order are the Brewers and the deficit remains 52. [Music] Bottom of the seventh. Here’s the second base. Nico her. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. That one missed. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits and a one and it’s fouled away. When you look at the elite teams in the game right now, there is going to be the slug. No question about it. But the really good offensive teams combined slug with more contact with less swing and miss. A swing and a miss as he chases way out of the zone. Foul ball still a one and two count. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end. Oh, we see it a lot more these days than we ever did when I played. But a slider in the 90s still catches your attention even if you’re sitting on the pitch. Good luck recognizing that tight spin and adjusting to the late break. Swanson batting with one down, takes a strike. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. This one popped up, settles under this one. He makes the grab. That’s out number two. Now batting third base Matt two out space is empty and next for the Cubs Matt Shaw. It’s interesting he plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. Next offering pop foul off to the right out of play. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. Two outs and that skips in the dirt. What about him playing another position on defense, one that would require a little more range. Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game, it’d surprise a lot of people. You might even be able to put him in center field. Yeah. Yeah. And I figured you would get Kat into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true on a line base hit and that turns the lineup over. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. And now the first baseman, Michael Bush. Hard hit left side. They get the force and that ends the inning. One hit, one left. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the Cubs five and the Brewers two. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Taylor Rogers. Well, walks have certainly been an issue for him this season, so we’ll see what kind of command he has. Here comes Christian Yellers. Chicago. Edge of the zone. Called a strike. One movement in the Cubs bullpen. Alvaro Velasquez up and throwing for manager Craig Council. That’s a ball. Tried the sweeper. Well, it’s critical right here that they bear down and turn in some quality at bats. Try to chip away at that lead because if it gets to the ninth, that closer’s coming in. Swings through that. Going to really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball. fouls it off. Still one and two. This to third. Dives and he can’t hang on. No throw and they catch a break as they get a base runner at first. Now batting the first base Andrew Vaughn. And here’s the first baseman Andrew Vaughn. 0 for three in this one. Knee high. That’s in for a strike. Let’s go. Yell on at first. Nobody out. And there’s a ball. [Music] Punch him out. Pinch misses and it’s three and two. [Music] out towards right center. That’s well struck and it looks like trouble. Yell flies around third. He’ll score easily. Well done. Narrows the deficit with the RBI there. That can be a dangerous pitch if you don’t get it inside enough because as a hitter, you see it coming across the plate the whole way. No problem handling it and putting a good swing on it that time. Now a huge at bat in this game coming up. Digging in is the switch inning outfielder Blake Perkins. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. first offering and it just misses with the tying run at the plate and we’re in the top of the eighth. That one sizzling on its way through to the outfield. The throw to third into third and they are rolling. Runners at the corner. Still nobody out. Oh, just a nice job coming through in a pretty high leverage spot right there. Got the top of the ball a little bit, but not much. That was hit pretty hard through the infield. So, I think he’ll be happy with that swing. Definitely generated some good bat speed. Now, that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. The batter now, Danny Jansen. That misses the zone and it’s one and0 in the infield at the corners. Don’t be surprised to see them come home first and prevent that run from scoring. Lefty continues to work, but the closer getting loose in the bullpen. This one chopped on the ground, but foul. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. Swing and a miss. Chased it out of the zone. Well, the hitter shows the pitcher that he’s willing to go after that pitch down in the zone. So perhaps he’ll come back to it. Still try to get that ground ball double play. Swang at a highf fly ball. Well struck. That’s back. Squeezes it. Runner tags from third. He’ll score on the sack fly and they trail by one. Oh, that’s a quality at bat right there. You know the situation. You need something in the air and deep enough and that’s exactly what he did. Good pass to the baseball. manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Taylor Rogers gives way. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. Now pitching for new pitcher in the game for the Cubs. Cade Horton. And as relievers go, he’s not a big strikeout guy. Tries to force weak contact. So command and execution are huge for him. So digging in, Joseph Ortiz, a pair of strikeouts and he’s flyed to center. [Applause] That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. [Music] On the ground, left side. Six, four, three. Double play and the inning is over. They put two on the board, three hits, no errors, and no one left. Home half of inning number eight straight ahead. It’s the Cubs five and the Brewers four. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Grant Anderson, left-handed batter at the plate, and he’s been excellent in those matchups this year. So, this seems like a calculated move. Well, one-run game. Now, it’ll be the Cubs DH. Kyle Tucker. He’s already homered in this game. Pitch misses there. And that’s ball one. Next offering is fouled back. One more time and a foul ball. Fights that one away. Still one and two. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Five foul balls in a row. I have no idea what that feels like, but you got to love this battle. Just wondering who’s going to blink first. And a ball evens a count. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Come on. There’s a swing and a drive and out of here. Another homer. He’s done it again. His second homer of the game. And they add a run. It’s 6-4. That’s their fourth home run of the game. They can’t stop and they won’t stop hitting home runs in this one. Boo. They’re clearly feeding off of each other at the dish. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. [Applause] And up next for Chicago, Seiya Suzuki swing and a line drive slicing into right field. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s one down. Center fielder Crow Armstrong. Next to hit, Pete Crow Armstrong. This guy is one of the best athletes in the sport. [Applause] Fast ball for a strike. Late in the game, everyone gets a little tighter. Way to get ahead on a really good hitter right there. The 01 foul ball [Music] way inside. Gets out of the way. Ring him up, says Clyde Washington. That’s a strike out. Oh, big power guy right there and generating so much bat speed. It’s hard to bring that to a halt once you’ve committed. They tried to check the swing, just couldn’t do it. Kelly stands in here. Tried to hold back his swing there, but went around. headed towards the corner and that is a foul ball. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Chicago. He goes down looking, but the solo shot stretches their lead even further. Last chance coming up for the Brewers. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Alvaro Velasquez. a chance at his first save of the year. Chicago Cubs. Number 28, Brandon Lockage. Up now for the Brewers. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. And the first offering, a fast ball for a strike. [Applause] inside. Just missed [Music] [Music] and he lays down a bunt and he beats it out. It’s a bunt single to start the inning. This is a big part of his skill set and he puts himself into situations where he can rely on his speed to impact the ball game and this is just another example of it and we’ll see what else he can do now that he’s on first. So up next, Andrew Monisterio just missed. [Applause] The tying run at the plate and that one fouled off. [Applause] Swang and a ball lifted in the air. Brings it in. One away. Good pitch. She just kind of had him out in front on that pitch away and wasn’t able to stay closed. He’s two outs away now. The number two hitter and the first pitch misses for ball one. This is one of those situations the infielders have to pre-plan and understand that the ball’s got to be hit extremely hard right at them if they’re going to have a chance to go for a double play with the tying run at the plate here in the top of the ninth. Now this is in the air down the line and that’s a fair ball around third. He’ll score relay to third. the tag out. Absolutely perfect execution of the relay right there to cut him down at third. And he probably should have shut it down at second base and been happy with the double, but it took a great play to get him. You just have to tip the cap. So, it’s their last chance in this one. Next is the designated hitter, William Contrus. climb the ladder with that fast ball. Strike one. Looking to get the tying run on base. That misses and a count even. One and one. [Music] Hard ground ball base now. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. He was all over that one. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. So two down. Now it’s Christian Yelich. Tap foul at the plate. Right now they’re looking for something. Hit hard into the gaps. Give them an opportunity with two outs to score that run from first. One-run game here in the top of the ninth. Squirts away a little bit. And the runner stays where he is. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. [Applause] The Brewers down to their final strike. Good job to fight that one off. Two outs. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another. [Music] And that is a good eye on a pitch down low. Two balls, two strikes. Ground ball right side. Throw to first ball game and the Cubs strand the tying run on base to win it. The ball for his first career save deserves to be on display at his house. I mean, it’s kind of like when a restaurant frames its first dollar bill somewhere in a wall. You just can’t forget your first save. 65 the final here today. The Cubs go home. A winner for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shi saying so long.
